Totally worth the wait! We walked damn near across Ottawa to get here because it was so highly rated on Yelp and had been on You Gotta Eat Here. We were not going to leave without visiting W&A's! We showed up and sadly were met with a 1 hour wait, however the way their front of house staff handled us was super professional. They were apologetic to the point that they'd had you beleive they'd never had to put someone on a waitlist before, it was lovely to maintain that level of empathy for potential and returning customers. We went to the coffee shop next door for a pre-brunch coffee and scone (more on that in another review). Around the hour mark we cycled back over and were told our table was ready so we got a swell spot overlooking the kitchen. By this time we had plenty of time to scrutinize the menu both online and off and knew what we wanted. My wife had the Eggs Florentine and I went with the Eggs in Purgatory... of and two Mimosa's which ended up being served with only a splash of OJ - me likey! Food came quickly and hot like lava (especially mine since it was supposed to resemble eggs boiling in Hell or something similar). I came here on a weekday morning and waited about 20 minutes for a table. I liked that you could leave your number and they would text you when your table was ready, giving you the opportunity to walk around. I decided to grab a coffee and wait, but they soon after told me my table was ready. When I walked in with the coffee, I felt bad and asked about it but they told me it was okay and were totally understanding about it since they suggested that I grab a coffee and come back. Came here on a Sunday morning for take out. (Mind you, if they're not busy, they won't do take outs). I got the eggs in purgatory and it comes in a nice paper box and paper bag. I was excited because I saw pictures of it and the place has such high ratings. Service is nice, and the space looks great with contemporary art prints and brick walls. However, I'm not impressed by the food-- it's way too salty! The eggs in the tomato sauce was like eating a hunk of SALT! The spiciness was fine but the sauce quite greasy. The potatoes too were also salty (but crispy) and the 2 pieces of toast were slightly burnt :( I found nothing great about this dish. Looking around at orders on other tables, they looked really good. So I was disappointed by the taste of mine. Fantastic! Wilf & Ada's was the culinary highlight of our trip to Ottawa. My boyfriend and I loved this place (we actually went here twice on a three day trip). I had the Eggs Purgatory and my boyfriend had the Eggs Florentine - so good. I can attest to both being good since I sampled some of his dish and he of mine. If you are a vegetarian, you won't be disappointed. Inside the eatery, there are a bunch of tables up front by the entrance, with a few by the windows. There's also some seating lined up against the left wall. We were seated up front and in view of some of the interesting art work on the walls (many of which were on sale). Our server was really friendly and genuine. She took care of us and made the whole dining experience very relaxed and overall great. I had tried to make my way to Wilf and Ada's at least a couple times in the past few trips to Ottawa, but their hours, which have them closing at 3pm every day, aren't particularly conducive for a traveler who's often sleeping in or otherwise occupied through the first part of the day. On my my recent visit though, I was picking up a rental car nearby, and that was more than enough reason to have lunch there. Unsurprisingly, there was a bit of a crowd when we arrived shortly before noon, so we got on their list and made our way around the corner to their sister coffee shop, Arlington Five. After a quick coffee and baked treat, the host had soon popped around the corner to fetch us, and we were seated in the hip, but cozy, breakfast and lunch joint. It's a narrow space, but has a cool feel to it with the exposed brick and funky art of photographs of food-related things juxtaposed against landscapes. I may not "get it", but it's neat. Their menu is broken down into breakfast and lunch sections; the larger breakfast section (served all day), is comprised of familiar items like traditional big breakfasts and French toast, while the lunch menu has just a few sandwiches. Naturally, all are more creative/housemade/locally sourced than your typical old school diner. I was feeling hungry, so while many of their breakfast items were quite enticing, I ended up ordering from the lunch section, getting the Dagwood sandwich, with half and half fries and salad on the side. My wife was sold on their special of the day, a chipotle eggs Benedict, with spinach, roasted tomato, red, onion, house-smoked bacon, and chipotle mayo. In true Dagwood fashion (Google it, Millennials), my sandwich was a behemoth. Piled high between three slices of bread were roasted chicken, BLT, spicy pickled egg, arugula and cheddar. This was one of those sandwiches where I was better off taking angled bites instead of trying to fit the whole thing in my mouth. All of the fillings worked though, and made for layers of flavour in addition to the obvious hunger-satiating factor. The shoestring fries were wonderful - thin and ultra crisp, these skin-on fries could give McDonald's a run for their money. My salad was A-OK, mainly serving to limit my fry intake, rather than getting a full order of the deep fried wonders. My wife's chipotle eggs Benedict were the hot mess that you would expect, with yolk and the slightly smokey mayo all over the place, just begging to have the large chunks of homefries dipped in it. Service was laid-back and friendly, but spot on professionally, and I appreciated the recognition of my "Steamed hams" t-shirt (Google it, Millennials). With a belly that was full for several hours, Wilf and Ada's takes the diner experience to the next level here in the 21st century, but maintains the charm and friendliness that has kept the genre around for the past several decades. read more

I was excited to try this place given the review but thought this place was a little overrated. Came here on a Monday for brunch, they said there would be a 45 min so I put my name down and walked around waiting for them to text me. Came back half an hour later to check in and saw there were empty tables. They said some people before us cancelled so we can take a seat. Well, good thing we came back to check in earlier. Blackstone Eggs Benny ($17.12) Poached eggs with bacon, tomato, and a piece of bread. The eggs were a little overcooked in my opinion, as they weren't runny. The bacon was really crispy which was nice. I substituted the home fries with poutine for extra $2.50. The fries were thin, crispy and love it. The gravy flavour was a bit bland and the cheese wasn't too melty. It was good though. Food was good, but nothing special imo. read more

They take the time to prepare each place with quality, precision, care, and uniqueness. One of the most interesting things about this restaurant is the homemade condiments you can put on your toast. They have quality butter, house made jam, but the best of the them all is their house made peanut butter. You can literally feel and see the texture of the peanuts as you taste it. The Eggs in Purgatory is considered the house special. The poached eggs are devoured in a delectable spicy tomato sauce that provides a good amount of spice and kick on your palate. My friend had The Classic (Eggs, Bacon, Beans, Home Fries, and Toast) for a very good price of $11. There was so much on the plate that she only could finish 60% of the plate. The decor of the place is very intimate and homestyle in my eyes. Seating capacity is very small, so be sure to arrive early if you want to avoid a wait in line. The only time I would skip my mom's home cooked weekend morning breakfast is if I were to go to Wilf & Ada's. If you are going on a weekend morning, you better be ready for a wait because it is the most popular joint in centretown. In the past I've waited over an hour because of how popular it is. This family run diner has been around for decades, however the insides have been gutted out and modernized in the recent years. The spot is very cozy and quaint and the service always comes with a smile. The coffee is hot and they will always top you up when they make the rounds. My favourite breakfast dish is probably the Eggs in Purgatory which has been featured in "You Gotta Eat Here" but I always tell them to go easy on the hollandaise as I don't like my plate to be drowning in it. We always get a side plate of bacon that you can share with the whole table as well. I don't live in Ottawa anymore but I can't wait to go back for breakfast when I'm down to visit family again. read more

TL;WR (too long ; won't read): Perfect breakfast/brunch location with a great morning atmosphere and excellent service. The flourentine ($14) and eggs in purgatory ($13.50) that come with a side of homies (baked potato cubes) were both excellent dishes. If the restaurant is packed make sure to give your name and number to a staff member so that they can contact you when a table is ready. They do not take reservations ahead of time. Pack light if you're coming here though, not much space around your seat to leave knapsacks and such. Review: I came here with a friend on a Saturday around noon. The restaurant was fully packed and that time and the waitress that spoke to us at the door said it would be a 15 min or so wait for a table to clear up. She asked to take down one of our numbers in order to contact us when the table was ready and suggested going to the bookstore right next door to help with the wait time (they have some really cheap used book deals!). We were contacted within the approximate time she gave us and was seated as soon as we came back to the restaurant. I ordered the flourentine whilst my friend got the eggs in purgatory. I asked if it was possible to get extra greens on my order and the waitress said she'll let the kitchen staff know. Our orders came out pretty quickly and my plate was filled with greens (it just looked as if it was a mountain of greens and potatoes), figuring that it was an odd request I made sure to thank her for putting the request in. The flourentine was excellent, and the homies (potato cubes) were surprisingly one of the highlights of our meals. The seasoning on everything was to my liking and I didn't have to add anything to them. If you want a meal that's not too heavy in the morning, the flourentine is the way to go. The side of homies is plentiful and enough to share with a friend. Overall I'd give the flourentine a 4.5/5. My friend got eggs in purgatory. Creative name aside, this dish looked as good as it tasted. The tomato flavour was very rich, the toast cuts down the impact of the richness just the right amount for you to not get overwhelmed with the flavour. If you like your tomato sauces than this is the one to go for. This dish is a solid 5/5. The portions for both were great, the homies make sure you're stuffed if you're not already. The hype is legit and 100% justified. I would definitely recommend coming during the weekday, or early on the weekends. I got here at 11am on a Sunday morning (but also it was the Grey cup weekend) and had to wait close to 1.5h for a table for 2. They have a good waitlist system where they will text you once your table is ready - they give you about 10 minutes to claim it before they move on to the next group. The restaurant is cozy and filled with the scent of bacon and potatoes. The staff are pleasant and efficient - orders are taken promptly and food came out hot and quick. I had the eggs in purgatory ($14), their version of a shakshouka. 2 eggs were cooked and served in a spicy tomato sauce, topped with cheese and arugula, and served with toast and home fries. This. Was. Amazing - it was incredibly satisfying on a cold morning. My friend had the classic breakfast ($12) and hollandaise on the side ($3). The gravy was a pepper gravy sauce but it did not taste much. One chance there was the ''tabasco'' diluted with water af. I also tried the buttermilk apple/berry french toast. Im not really a sugary person but it was okay. The bean was not good at all as a tasted better elsewhere. It was quite dry. This was a really really good brunch. Truthfully, I'd love to give it 5 stars but the comfort level just isn't there. I went with my partner, I had the eggs Florentine and he tried their take on Shakshuka. Both were amazing. We each ordered a juice, mine was freshly squeezed orange and his was a cocktail of orange, fresh lemonade and grapefruit juice. After breakfast, we opted to split their French toast and the strawberry compote was divine. The open kitchen really demonstrates their commitment to amazing food quality and clearly the demand is there! It took us 25 minutes to be seated on a very crammed high top for two. Menus are small and worn but I recommend ordering one of their house specialties. However, because the restaurant is so small, there is often a lot of congestion moving around so the waitresses aren't always available to offer the best service. Nonetheless, the lady who took care of us was lovely. Final note to remember, good food costs money and this place definitely takes advantage of their fantastic eats. Came here for lunch today and the wait was around 15 minutes. We gave our number so that they could send us a text message when our table was ready. We sat down across the kitchen at the back so there was a nice view of the kitchen. It was neat to be able to see how our dishes were made. These types of unique restaurants are creative and are much better than the chain breakfast-type restaurants in Ottawa. They're also a dying breed in cities that are rapidly gentrifying. We ordered the Blackstone and Eggs in Purgatory. I normally don't order eggs benedict, but I enjoyed the Blackstone. The "homies" are deep fried potato wedges if you're wondering what homies are after looking at the menu. Of more interest was the Eggs in Purgatory, which was more unique of a dish on the menu. Two eggs are cooked in a small cast iron pan with tomato sauce in it then cheese and greens are placed on top, which makes for a yummy dish. I preferred the Eggs in Purgatory over the Blackstone. I love how everything is locally sourced and made in house. I ordered a grapefruit mimosa which was freshly squeezed grapefruit juice and champagne it was so yummy and refreshing. The wait line is pretty long and the food did take a while...but definitely worth the wait. Their drinks are all amazing (citrus lemonade, normal lemonade) - most of the drinks were already sold out before 1 pm. The egg is so soft and delicious, I didn't know there could be a difference in eggs until now haha. Their french toast was the best I've ever had served with real maple syrup which is so rare. Having heard about this diner, I decided to check it out on a Monday morning for breakfast before heading out to explore the city. What a nice cozy breakfast on a dark morning! Atmosphere: 4/5 The restaurant is small and cozy; a nice, comfortable relaxed atmosphere - good for eating alone or with friends. I also liked that it was a walkable distance from the downtown area. It is a tiny shop and don't take reservations but were very accommodating. When I arrived I went to order a Bloody Mary, however, I forgot I was in Canada. So Caesar it is! It was very tasty, not spicy (but not to worry I got the spice in my entree). I ordered the Eggs in Purgatory - they were amazing. There was a little bit of a kick in that tomato sauce but not overwhelming. It was served in the cutest skillet. And their home fries are called homies! Such cute marketing and their name did not let them down. They were nice and crispy. It's always a pleasure to eat in one of Yelpers' favorite spots. I get excited when I scroll down finding nothing else than good impressions (I imagine how proud the owner(s) must be). What is the recipe for having such a good impact? What I found was a cute cornered dinner that could've appeared on a"Gilmore Girls" episode. Colorful art hanging on the walls, a cozy-friendly vibe, a good mixture of natural materials, all day breakfast menu+mimosas!!!!, and a chill out crew. The concurrence was so diverse; from the suited males, the hipster club, to the couple with the cranky husband complaining about food trends. I was by myself making mental notes about bringing my love ones for a mimosas Sunday brunch. It took me half my cup of coffee to finally pick in between 3 attractive breakfasts: Eggs in Purgatory, Blackstone, and Florentine. The Florentine dish won simply because I've never tried it before. I'm glad to write about such a well executed dish. Those eggs made me realized I haven't reached good cooking skills... That texture in between jelly and something tender, in conjugation with those moisturized bums, OMG. The arugula was perfect, not even an ugly-darkish corner. The potatoes were ok, some crunchiness would've helped them. It was cute to be told by the waiter that the hot sauce would actually be spicy... It was milder than a Tabasco. I can tell you that it's street parking though, and that you should check the signage to make sure there's no time limitation or fee. The place: It's very small and what they call a 'scratch diner'. What's a scratach diner, you ask? It's a place that makes almost everything from scratch - and whatever they don't make, they source from producers who make their stuff from scratch. Anyway, the place is small and boasts a super relaxed vibe. You could easily be in someone's living room (unless you've got those bar-type chairs and high tables). Side note - these guys will take your name and number and text you when your table is ready. You have 10 minutes to get there once they've texted you. The goods: AMAZING. After my disappointing dinner the previous night, I was really, really hoping to have a different experience with brunch and.... I did. I ordered the classic - eggs, potatoes, beans and smoked bacon. First of all, the bacon. The BACON almost had me in tears, it was SO f*cking good. I usually go for sausage but the waitress told me I should try the bacon because they smoke it themselves and well, because it's awesome. Take my word for it. The eggs were perfectly scrambled for me, and the potatoes were crispy on the outside and the perfect firmness on the inside. The only thing I would have added is seasoning or salt. I also had the citrus punch which is made from scratch and a beautiful,m vibrant orange color. It was absolutely delicious. My friend ordered Eggs Benedict (the breakfast sandwich) and loved it. You really cannot go wrong here. Service: Great! The staff was super friendly, from the person who greeted us, to the two waitresses who came over to see us. They make you feel very welcome. If you're in Ottawa, you have to check this place out. Just keep in mind that they're really busy on weekends, so go early! read more

I came here for breakfast for the first time, and tried the coffee, French toast, and frittata. The atmosphere is VERY cozy and nicely warm on a crisp Fall day. It's very clean and the waiters are very professional and warm. Coffee: good quality but not as strong as I like it. They have their own coffee store close by that sells speciality coffees! French toast: the bread was very yummy, soft and sweet, but I wish there was more spices like cinnamon. The apple and raspberry compote was delicious and balanced the sweetness of the maple syrup. Frittata: This tasted very light, surprisingly, but the sweet onions and the smoked cheddar gave good flavour. The homefries BLEW my mind, they were so crispy on the outside and I could just eat a plate of them! I left very satisfied! It's a cozy spot to meet up and chat over some freshly made breakfast comfort food. I wish they could add more innovative items to their menu though, that would make it better. My favourite spot is still Baker Street cafe for the value and variety you get for the price! read more
