This is a great brunch spot. I came on a weekday but it was pretty full. You can tell they use natural ingredients and fresh veggies. Coffee was excellent. I know I was supposed to get the Eggs in Purgatory but I was really really hungry so I tried the Hungryman breakfast. I'm glad I did because every ingredient on the plate was fresh and delicious. A small, but beautiful spot, (the word cozy works well here!), it's totally transformed from the place I remember about 4 years ago. The menu isn't too large, but has enough variety to satisfy different tastebuds. They have a daily frittata and today's was spinach with St. Albert cheese curds! How could Tiffany NOT get this when in town? I opted for the crazy indulgent French toast with fruit compote and whipped cream. Holy, decadence! About three massive pieces of French toast piled high with stewed apples, raspberries and strawberries - YUM! They have since retired and when the place closed so did a chapter of Centretown life. Their spot has re-opened as "Wilf & Ada's a from scratch diner". The people behind this incarnation have good pedigree: Fraser Café, the WORKS - elements of both are visible. This is an imagined space - like a back shed / cabin: barn board walls, exposed brick, plank tables, open kitchen, homemade hot sauce, mason jar sugar pots, rough weave cloth napkins, classic rock/country music and a single chalkboard menu. All that remains of the actual past is the name, "Wilf & Ada" stenciled on a wall, and the first menu item - an Ada's Classic: 2 eggs, bacon, toast, home fries and homemade baked beans - the only "classic breakfast" available that day. I ordered the "eggs in purgatory"- I wondered why I was given a spoon. I got distracted during the wait by delicious looking homemade banana bread. I ordered some. Filled with gooey chocolate and walnuts It might not be to a banana bread purist's liking -it was very chocolatey- and drier than ideal (hence served with butter) for me. It was still remarkably good - and filling - a borderline stand-in for the toast only set. For my main I was presented with 2 soft-cooked eggs simmered in a spicy tomato sauce -- a poached egg stew of sorts which explained the spoon. This was served with a side of home fries that were exactly like the pan fried sliced potatoes mom made me growing up. Try some of the homemade hot sauce on them. The eggs' texture and flavor were overpowered by the spicy tomato sauce they were simmered in - that also overpowered the Parmesan on top. The tomato sauce was good and hearty / spicy though. The three pieces of bread helped with getting all the hearty sauce. I have an issue with the chalkboard only menu - yes a printed menu limits what you feel like making that day. However, by putting the menu on ONE chalkboard you are making half of the diners face away from the menu, and tough going for anyone with visual impairment - the substantial local over-40 set. So far the neighbourhood "kids" (I'm 44) are here as are the epicurious. By the time I left at 11:00 there was about a 1/2 hour wait. My advice is to show up for an early, hearty breakfast as brunch will cost you some wait time just like in the old days. They are not open for dinner - yet. I saw the reviews on Yelp and decided to give this place a try. I went there with my a friend on a Wednesday afternoon and didn't have to wait in line. The waitress quickly came to seat us and take our order. The service was fast and friendly all throughout our time there. We went with the eggs benedict with bacon which came with the highly anticipated hollandaise sauce and the Hungryman's breakfast. The eggs benedict did not disappoint as everything tasted fresh and flavorful, especially the home made potatos or homies. The Hungryman's breakfast was also very satisfying with the highlight being the french toast with whipped cream and compote that came on the side. I also ordered a coconut chai which was pretty good. Will probably try something else from their variety of tea and coffee next time. The prices were fair as the whole thing ended up costing us in the 40$ range. In the search for good breakfast before we left Ottawa to head back home, I happened upon the reviews for Wilf and Ada's - what people are saying about this place are mostly great things. And with recommendations of "eggs in purgatory" and "dirty coconut chai" carving out my hunger, we headed out for a yummy morning. Once we got to the diner around 11am, there was a waitlist since the place was packed. How it works is a waiter takes down your phone number and texts you when your table is ready. When it is, you have to text back to confirm and you then have 10 mins to claim your seat(s). Although we had to wait about 20 mins, I'd say it was worth it. Wilf and Ada's is a "scratch diner" - they do their best to make as much of their menu as they can from scratch and in-house while sourcing ingredients from local suppliers and products whenever it's possible. For me, this is another reason to support the business - sustainability is important and it's great to see it work through small businesses that connect with each other. We ordered: Eggs in purgatory ($13.50) - 2 eggs simmered in spicy tomato sauce (it packs quite a bit of heat), arugula, and parmesan. This was yummy - Im not used to eating a lot of arugula but it added a nice earthy and leafy taste to the dish giving it a fresh and healthy spin. The sauce is pretty spicy so take caution. It was served in a nice mini skillet/cast iron pan that kept the eggs in purgatory nice and hot throughout my time there. This was also served with a side of toast and homies (home fries) which were good - slightly crunchy and soft and a side of beans which were so good - I liked the heartier and more dense texture of beans and it went nicely with the rest of the dish. Their sweet flavour complemented the saltiness of the spicy eggs and homies. The Classic ($11.00) - 2 eggs, sausages, beans, toast, and homies. This dish usually comes with bacon but they had sausage today so that was an option we took. From what my dad said, he liked the dish - simple classic. The Hungryman ($15.00) - 2 eggs, sausages, beans, toast, homies, and side french toast with fruit compote, whip, and maple. This is just like the classic but with the side french toast. My mom enjoyed it - it was certainly a lot to eat but we helped each other out to finish the dish. French Toast ($12.00) - this is the same as the French toast side. House-made bread, buttermilk batter, fruit compote (a dessert made of fruits, in this case apples, in sugar syrup) and maple syrup. My brother liked the french toast - nice, soft, and fluffy and sweet. While he didn't like the compote, I did - it's delicious and I loved sampling bites of the French toast with it. The compote makes it juicy and fruity and adds a bit of crunch to the toast. Dirty coconut chai ($5.25) - espresso, chai, cinammon, coconut, & milk. I love chai tea and other chai drinks so I was excited to try this one out. For the most part, it was good but it does have a strong coconut taste - keep in mind that it has espresso so if you're expecting a sweet drink, it won't be as sweet as you might expect. Wilf and Ada's is fresh, local, fun, hipster diner. Simply put - a business doing it right. I love the fact that it's a scratch diner and I love the decor of the place - Wilf and Ada's has a long history of a few owners taking it over but I think whoever is running it now (Wilf?) means Wilf and Ada's is here to stay. read more

We were told that there would be a 1.5 hour wait, which only ended up being about 20 min! I had the Eggs Blackstone and my wife had the B.L.T.E. with a side of poutine. The eggs were nicely cooked and the hollandaise sauce was perfect, but the "homies" (potatoes) that came with the dish were tasteless and very underwhelming. I was really keen to try the new menu and I popped in for lunch today. It was later in the day, so the place wasn't terribly busy and I got a nice little spot by the window. I ordered the eggs in purgatory, which is two poached eggs drenched in a spicy tomato sauce, and topped with arugula and cheese, served with home fries and toast ($12). While the eggs were delicious, my toast was not. It was sliced razor thin, and was nowhere near substantial enough to deal with all the sauce that my eggs were swimming in. So I had to recruit the home fries to do the job of dealing with all the sauce, and thankfully they rose to the challenge. The coffee was good, but nothing special and I do wish that they had come around to refill my cup since they use the small little white diner cups (though I'm still unsure if they do free refills or not). I really want to write a glowing review for this place, as it's a cute spot with a great feel to it, but on my first time out, I was left feeling a little underwhelmed with my solo adventure to wilf & ada's. Verdict: The rare 5 star rating I have given this place says it all. Very rarely do I give a restaurant 5 stars, simply because very few deserve it, however I must admit that this was quite possibly the best breakfast that I have purchased in years. For starters, there was a 25 minute wait for table, however the greeter took our phone number and sent us a text message when our table was ready. A simple, but pretty cool feature, that allowed us to explore the area while we waited. Upon being seated, I noticed that the atmosphere was very cozy, and laid back, and we were seated right across from the kitchen, where the magic happens. The servers were hospitable and efficient, and the coffee was great. I ordered the Eggs in Purgatory, which is literally the best restaurant breakfast that I have purchased in years. It was a perfect combination of spicy, hearty, and just pure awesomeness. Also, when I say spicy, I mean that it is spicier than most breakfasts one would order. Are you serious about brunch? Well then, have I got a recommendation for you while you're in Ottawa. You must make the trip to Wilf and Ada's. This cozy little restaurant was recommended to me on my last trip to Ottawa (back in July of 2017) and I am so happy I got to visit again on this trip. First thing first: this place is pretty tiny. You will have to wait anywhere from 40 minutes to an hour. If waiting for anything is not a thing that you're interested in doing, this is not the place for you. But if you feel like you can wait: do it. Because you'll be thanking us later. My tip: either grab a coffee at their coffee place (directly next door) or go the Starbucks across the street. This time around, we arrived at the restaurant at 9 AM (an hour after opening) and every table was full. We didn't get seated until 9:40 AM. Once inside, you'll get a direct sightline of the kitchen. The place is a local, scratch diner. On the chalkboard, they advertise all the producers and farmers that they work with, including Seed to Sausage. This is also why some of their prices are a bit higher than most places. You're getting top quality. Each of us got something completely different and were totally satisfied with our offerings. I got the Hungryman ($16) which came with 2 eggs, bacon, sausage, beans, toast, homies (aka home fries) and french toast. It's a lot of food and a lot of GOOD food. My pal ended up getting the poutine ($12.5) topped with pepper gravy, chicken, peas, and gravy. Plus, they added an egg to make it more brunch appropriate. All of the food was well done and the service super friendly. Our coffee cups were never empty and neither of us left feeling empty. In fact, you could have rolled us both out of there. We came here on a Sunday during Easter long weekend. The place was crowded. The waitress took down our names and numbers, and estimated a 40-minute wait. We thought that the wait was worthwhile. They have a smoky pulled pork flavour to them, and the homemade strawberry jam is to DIE for. On our way back home, we stopped by this diner in Ottawa and while it looks like a small spot in the corner of the street, it's offerings was suprinsgly delicious. Apparently the story of this diner dates back to quite some time, it used to be called Wilf's and now they added Ada's name to it for a new twist after a change of owners and to keep the heritage of what was started by the original owner. Very different than a typical diner for brunch options, they have a very creative selection of choices. All very hearty and the ingredients are fresh. So I finally went to this place after having it on my list. I am sad to say that it didn't meet my expectations. It's okay. It wasn't horrible but it wasn't anything special. The best part was that the ingredient are local and fresh. So my husband and I went together. He got the poutine and I got he eggs purgatory. The poutine was pretty bland. It definitely needed something more for flavor. Not to mention that it was a steep $16. The eggs purgatory were pretty decent although it tasted a lot like tomato sauce. The homies were plain. Nothing special. I think what they are really missing is flavor. All the food was very boring tasting. I love flavor and uniqueness and this was not that. I won't personally be going back unless someone invited me to go. If you want to try yourself, just know that there will probably be a wait as it is a popular place. Came here for brunch on a Tuesday with my partner while we were in town. It was surprisingly busy for a weekday and there was a 20 minute wait, but we realized afterwards that it's worth the wait! We were seated quickly after a table opened up and servers were friendly. I ordered the Hungry Man with Bacon and Lettuces for sides. It also comes with a piece of french toast topped with fruit compote and whipped cream. The meal was made from scratch and tasted delicious throughout! It's a bit more expensive than some brunch places (~$25 after tax+tip), but the quality and quantity of food you get is gold. Overall, this place is a gem worth waiting for.
