The biggest challenge is the ongoing construction. It seems like every time I fly through CLT, another section is under renovation. Hopefully the finished product will be worth the wait. Until then, give yourself extra time. If you're flying out of gates in Terminal E, or connecting between A, C, and E, be prepared for a serious walk. Thirty minutes isn't out of the question depending on your gate assignment. The moving walkways also seem to be out of service more often than they're working, which makes those long walks feel even longer. That said, there are some big improvements. The new TSA PreCheck checkpoint near Door 3 has been a game changer. If you're enrolled in TSA's Touchless ID program, the process is incredibly fast. No digging for your driver's license--just walk through using facial recognition, and you're on your way. It's one of the smoothest security experiences I've had. Despite the construction, the airport offers plenty of dining and shopping options, and the staff I've encountered have generally been helpful. CLT is also one of the busiest hubs in the country, so a little patience goes a long way. It's not my favorite airport in the world, but it's an efficient gateway to almost anywhere you want to go. Plan ahead, wear comfortable shoes, and build in a little extra time for the walk. The world is a big place. Go see it.

As a major American Airlines hub, it suffers from constant congestion, especially during peak travel periods. The waiting areas are bursting at the seams, forcing passengers to become "gate lice" because there's simply nowhere else to sit. The iconic rocking chairs scattered throughout the concourses are a charming Southern touch, but they aren't enough to redeem the overall experience. The retail selection is uninspired, and the food and beverage options are equally lackluster. Perhaps there's a newer or better terminal I didn't see, but based on my experience in Concourses C and D, CLT is an airport I get through rather than one I enjoy spending time in.

I prefer Charlotte because even though it's one of the busiest airports in the U.S. for takeoffs and landings, it has a relatively small footprint and feels surprisingly manageable compared to many major hubs. Connections are generally straightforward, and most gates are accessible without excessively long walks or train transfers. Another major advantage is the hotel situation. There are numerous hotels very close to the airport, many just a few minutes away by shuttle or Uber. Compared with other large hub airports, overnight connections in Charlotte are far less stressful. There are some negatives with CLT. The food choices, though better than in the past, are still fairly weak. And if your flight is departing early or connecting late, many of the options are closed. I've eaten at 1897 Market multiple times, which we consider a mediocre option, partly because it was the only restaurant open at the time. That said, most airport food isn't very good anyway, so I'll likely continue to use CLT for my BOS-to-CUR trips. Overall, I find it to be one of the more practical and efficient connecting airports when non stops are not an option.
