What a horrid experience this has been. We got stuck on a plane for over an hour because they couldn't connect the bridge to get us off the plane. No idea why it took an hour before they finally moved us to another gate so we could get off. I missed my connecting flight and had to book another one 2 1/2 hours later. I paid to board priority and with my new flight was stripped of priority boarding and my ticket showed boarding group 8!!! The other passenger that missed the connecting flight due to American airlines mechanical issues got priority, but not me for some reason. I was told to speak to the gate agent when boarding and told they could get me priority boarding. I waited in line for more than 15 minutes while the agent ignored me forcing me to engage her because she wasn't going to help otherwise. I told her about American Airlines mechanical issues leading to my missing the connecting flight and how I had priority and was told to speak to the gate agent to get it for the new flight. The agent asked my seat number after I explained that (Seat 11A), then she rudely told me she didn't k ow why they told me to speak to an agent and there was nothing she could do for me. I decided to post the picture of her with this review because how miserable are you to ignore someone and then have an attitude when they kindly explain the issue your company caused. If I can avoid traveling with AA I will, this has been an awful experienced made more horrible by the poor customer service. read more

Currently sitting in a broken seat that not only can't recline but is stuck at an angle you can barely sit it. Plane (5 hour flight) ran out of food (even snack boxes) well before getting to us. Flight attendants were salty about it. Only on this flight because we lost a whole day traveling here and started at one instate airport, had to drive to another and then got displaced overnight at a third. Took hours to get the hotel room we were promised. Now getting home six hours later than before on much worse flights. I will now drive 12-16 hours in any direction before using American - they go out of their way to make you feel inhuman. read more

I usually fly American. Have points to redeem. I find that they land on time but wait for 25 minutes to get to a gate. Sometimes even longer. Last few flight have had no initial delays, only docking at the gate too way too long. But you know this is how it is now. Back in the 70's and early 80's this would not be tolerated. But it is a new ideology now with the airlines. Not real happy but not much you can do if you fly American. read more

It was a first for me to fly out of Charlotte, direct to Los Angeles. During the time of booking in first class, I was not prompted to select the meal offering, actually was not even sure I was gonna get one, and therefore I was jealous that the person sitting next to me had a pre-ordered beef selection. Anyway, I was left with a chicken entrée which to my great surprise, was not dry. It was moist and tasted OK. There was salad and dessert too. It could've been better but it could've also been worse. Last flight out of Charlotte to Milwaukee after a long travel day starting in Istanbul to Heathrow. I loved the French pronunciation of Charlotte by the flight attendant, it added a sense of class. The flight wasn't full, and the crew wasn't petty about keeping us in our assigned seats, we took off on time, and landed a little early. All of this is really what we should be able to expect of an airline, but it's become rather unusual as you can see by the low average ratings here. The reason for my rare five star rating was the skill with which the pilot landed in a polar vortex snow storm in Milwaukee. Remarkably, it was a smooth comfortable touch down though the visibility was poor, the winds were high, the snow was whipping around and the temperatures were Arctic. In addition it seemed the cabin crew had total confidence in the cockpit crew. On the way out, I shouted a thank you for the adept landing and the pilot turned around and shrugged like it wasn't even a challenge. I appreciate the swagger. read more

We were told no accommodations due to the severe weather and left to figure it out. They constantly push the Citi Advantage credit cards on their flights. I filled out the application and was approved. They have told me that the card is at my local post office and is "out for delivery". Two weeks in to "out for delivery" and I have not seen the card. I used to be very loyal to America West Airlines out of Phoenix with a hub at one time in Columbus, Ohio. Then, it was US Airways flying across country, again from Phoenix, and I was getting upgraded regularly. Now, it's American Airlines that I frequent along with past America West Airlines and US Airways patrons. I find that similar to any other airline, customer service is often better than not, but there are always those few hiccups. With American Airlines, you can get someone on the phone, on a chat, on social media, or in person to assist, and with some respect on our part, we can often get what we need. I rarely have luggage issues though there was one time where my bag was broken, and American Airlines gave me a replacement bag while they had my original bag repaired. I find myself regularly flying in and out of the American Airlines gates at Phoenix Sky Harbor and frequenting hubs like Dallas-Fort Worth, Chicago O'Hare, Philadelphia, and Charlotte. Often, my travels require a layover, and my flights are more often than not on time and without delays on departing or arriving. With status, an American Airlines credit card, and membership in CLEAR and Global Entry, I do not pay for luggage, I receive priority luggage handling, I board early, I speed through security, I sometimes receive upgrades, and I access lounges. Traveling has become more of a hobby and habit at the same time, and using American Airlines as my regular go-to airlines, I accumulate miles quickly while also receiving status and Loyalty Point rewards. I have two travel premium credit cards: the AAdvantage Executive Mastercard offering complimentary Admirals Club access and the American Express Platinum card offering other lounge access along with travel credits along with complimentary CLEAR and Global Entry membership. While there are many lounges at the Charlotte airport, there are two Admirals Clubs. Through T-Mobile, I receive free WiFi on American Airline flights. Through my American Airlines AAdvantage status, I get upgrades or free paid snacks and drinks on flights along with other benefits. To retain status each year, you need to earn Loyalty Point through flying, credit card spending, and promotions. You also can earn Loyalty point rewards after hitting 175,000 points, 250,000 points, and so on. While it is difficult to receive upgrades due to so many people at the Executive Platinum status tier, the benefits I do receive is worthwhile. I also have experienced technical issues on flights but not enough to cause me to abandon American Airlines, especially when every other airline has these same challenges. All in all, American Airlines is a great company and does as well if not better than any of the other major airlines. read more

First AA flight out of Norfolk to Charlotte layover - delayed two hours. Second AA flight out of Charlotte to Oklahoma City - delayed boarding and then sat on tarmac for 30 minutes or more before taking off. RETURN TRIP First AA flight out of OKC to Charlotte layover - informed the night before that the flight would be delayed two hours. Then delayed another three hours to guarantee that the second flight would be missed. Rebooked on the third (not the 1st or 2nd available) next flight to Norfolk. Boarded late again. Took plane to de-icing pad (this is August, mind you) to do 'maintenance' which goes on for an hour before returning to the gate because of weather caused 'ground stop' even as Charlotte Douglas Airport (where we are) reports no weather delays whatsoever, just a few 'departure delays under 15 minutes'. It is currently more than nine (9!) hours later and they are reboarding yet another plane so that we can arrive about 10 hours later to Norfolk which we could have driven in a little over five hours. Wow, American Airlines! Problems that escalated and grew worse with each new plane we boarded. read more

We had a bad experience with American Airlines (AA) in Charlotte. I generally have OK to good experiences flying and one-star reviews are rare for me. I'm not writing this just because we had a bad experience or I want to pile onto AA's already-bad Yelp rating. This is legit feedback for improvement and awareness. My wife and I connected through Charlotte (CLT) from Cancun (CUN) to Raleigh-Durham (RDU). In Cancun, my boarding pass from CUN to CLT was tagged with "SSSS." This meant I had to go through an extra security screening at the gate in Cancun, even though I had active Global Entry and TSA PreCheck status. As a result, my boarding pass for the connecting flight from CLT to RDU was stripped of TSA PreCheck. My wife's TSA PreCheck was unaffected. After arriving in Charlotte and using Global Entry with no problem, I was then forced to go through regular TSA. It doesn't make sense that I was able to use Global Entry, but not TSA PreCheck. I went to the AA kiosks and reprinted my boarding pass stateside in an effort to get TSA PreCheck back on my boarding pass. No luck. The AA employee at the kiosks told me to go to the AA check-in counter. He said the check-in agents might be able to do something on their end to give me TSA PreCheck back. He had a nice demeanor, unlike the check-in agents we were about to see. We waited in a long line at the Charlotte AA check-in counter. It was evident the employees were short-staffed, stretched thin, and pacing themselves (I don't blame them for that, I'd do the same). However, they had bad attitudes and didn't appear to be adequately trained. It wouldn't surprise me if they were demoralized. That's the vibe I got. I explained my situation to a check-in agent. She didn't know how to add TSA PreCheck back to my boarding pass, but the agent next to her did. After some figuring out, they successfully added TSA PreCheck back to my boarding pass. Unfortunately, they failed in knowing that I was still flagged in TSA's system for enhanced security. Apparently, it stuck with me for all legs of my trip (Google "ssss boarding pass"). I learned this from the TSA agent at the end of the PreCheck line. She made me turn around and go through regular TSA. If AA had known this, my wife and I wouldn't have wasted our time and the AA employees' time at the kiosks, waiting in line at the check-in counter, and interacting with the check-in agents. From this experience, where American Airlines in Charlotte can improve is: (1) Staffing up and/or better management of staff and resources. (2) Improving check-in agents' demeanor and morale. (3) Training and educating kiosk and check-in agents about TSA exceptions like the "SSSS" tag and special situations related to TSA PreCheck status. I recognize this may not be AA's fault entirely, but a miscommunication on TSA's part to the airlines. The wasted time caused me to almost miss my flight from CLT to RDU. I had to run from security to Gate B15, which is at the far end of Concourse B. The terminal was crowded, so I was running and slowing down, running and slowing down, as I weaved my way through groups of people. If I was traveling with kids or elderly people, we wouldn't have made it. I was the last one to board the flight. When I got on the plane, everyone was already in their seats. According to my wife, I had made it through the gate with less than five minutes to spare (based on how many minutes the AA gate agent told her I had left before they closed the door). read more

I'm compelled to compliment American Airlines for their amazing ability, to succeed in making my first class flights into a third rate travel experience. On my recent international flight from Curacao (CUR) to Charlotte (CLT), I found their first class to be lacking in many ways including: * Mediocre seats * Mediocre legroom * AWFUL food (an inedible chicken enchilada and a barely edible vegetarian pot pie) * A flight attendant "commercial" to buy an American Airlines credit card. This was blasted over the intercom for what seemed like 5-minutes. * Tray table was warped * On my prior "first class" flight, my seat didn't work and wouldn't recline. When compared to my recent trip from Barbados to Boston on JetBlue Mint which provides a private pod, power seat controls, lie flat seating and an excellent dinner service, there is well, no comparison. The irony of this review, is that by providing a 2-star review, I'm improving their Yelp average, which is 1.5 stars overall! read more

This is the absolutely worst airline ever! I could clarify why they are so bad but the examples would be endless. Most rent example is I bought an economy ticket, I upgraded to first class. While I was on my trip I needed to return a day early. They said you can't change your economy ticket, I said understand, but I upgraded to first class (no cheap endeavor) and they said doesn't matter, you can't change dates because original ticket was economy. We had to get a hotel in Charlotte to avoid spending 24 hours in the airport. If my original flight from Charlotte to Gulfport, MS would have just waited 15 minutes, I would have made my connection. On our recent flight to Cabo San Lucas and back, it was a disaster on part of AA. First of all, on our flight bound from Charlotte to Cabo San Lucas, we boarded the plane, then had to unboard when the Captain announced there were maintenance issues. We had to go from gate to gate..'til they announced another flight to Cabo, ultimately delaying our arrival at Cabo nearly 3 hours! That's 3 precious hours of sunlight on our 1st day!! Then, as if that wasn't enough, on our flight back from Cabo, there was yet ANOTHER mishap...causing us to lose our connecting flight. This led to us having to stay overnight at an airline-sponsored hotel in Dallas. I appreciated the free hotel stay, but we couldn't get any sleep, given that we had to leave the hotel at 2 AM to catch the 4 am flight. Basically, we were only there for a few hours. What a pain, but I guess it beats napping 1-2 hours on the floor at the airport?? As it goes, we arrived back home many hours late...causing us to spend extra money on food, as well as wages lost at work in the morning. To all this (not one, but TWO flight delays!!), I put in a complaint thru the AA...only to receive a pat answer that all they'll do is give us extra flight points (not even half the points to make up for all the hardships we had to endure). So in all... I did learn that they did have contingency plans in place to accommodate passengers that missed flights (free hotel boarding, that is). However, I learned that AA gives a crap about providing fair and just compensation (for the time lost, wages lost, etc.etc.). BTW, they did manage to give us $15 per person for the overnight meal. $15 for dinner...Are you kidding me?!? Needless to say, we spent well above that amount...even at a hotel restaurant. For a multi-billion dollar business-industry like this, it's truly disheartening to know that they could do SO much, yet chooses not to. Talk about cheap, crude service! Speaking of cheap and crude, can we talk about airline foods (or lack thereof, that is)?!? I remember decades ago, we actually got decent food (a complete meal even) on domestic flights. Now, all we can hope for is some frickin' Melba Toast or Biscoff cracker...that's it. OMFG...As much we spend on these flights nowadays, I can't believe that's the best they can do for the passengers. I mean, how cheap are they?!? After this experience, I will go out of the way to avoid AA if I can help it, and opt for Delta and the rest...in the future. I've lost all respect for AA. read more

This is a review of an excellent AA employee in CLT...The connection left before I was able to board. Missed it by 10 minutes. It always happens when you go from anywhere in the airport to gate E I walked by the customer service area and the line was so long. It would've been 1 AM before I got to the front.. so first the AA app was going to send me to Greenville the next day then they decided they would send me to Asheville tonight. Where that came from I don't know. Anyway the American gate agent saved my butt by getting me on a later flight tonight even though it's gonna get around midnight or something at least I get to go home instead of staying at a hotel. Many kudos and thank you to AA for hiring such a great rep and please give her a raise and promotion--- she actually cared about company reputation and helping a customer in distress. We booked American Airlines for our flight to and from Puerto Rico. It was a decently smooth process, especially as we booked business class. All of the employees were helpful and friendly during our flight and check in process. The food was ok, its airline food you can't expect too much. I enjoyed the warmed nuts and ice cream. They only came around once for drink service, despite drinks alcoholic and non alcoholic being included I would have like to been offered drinks more than once during my flight. The seats and the trays were obviously not cleaned in between flights. Everything was crumb covered and dirty. The bathrooms were also not great and not very clean during the flight. read more

I do understand these companies know very well they can get away with whatever they decide to get away with with 0 consequences. No matter the action. Unfortunately, we will be arriving past 9pm now. Which is not best for anyone on this flight to drive several hours at night, its sickening. No weather issues, just your standard AA experience: overbooking, crew shortages, planes that never arrive, and a total refusal to communicate with passengers. American Airlines completely failed me. My flight from Las Vegas to DC was canceled because they didn't have enough crew -- not weather. I was told the next confirmed flight wouldn't be until Thursday, despite having work and important meetings to prepare for. They put me on standby to Charlotte, promised a connection to DC, and then canceled the DC flight after we had already boarded. Total incompetence. At the American Airlines counter in Charlotte, the agent was shockingly rude, dismissive, and unprofessional. No empathy. No accountability. No solutions. I was eventually dumped in Baltimore, nowhere near my destination, and had to pay $85 for an Uber just to get home to Virginia -- all because of American Airlines' internal failures. I fly American Airlines regularly. After this disaster, I will never fly this airline again unless they compensate me. This was stressful, expensive, and entirely avoidable. read more
