Dr. Slater is a superb cardiologist and physician. He is very smart and caring. He reads the appropriate medical literature and he takes the time to explain things and he encourages questions. I hesitate calling him old school, but I mean this in the best way possible. He listens to you and he acts on your concerns. He doesn't just 'yes' you and then forget to follow through. Unfortunate that I've found myself writing a review for a cardiologist, but never mind that for now. Since I HAD to see a cardiologist, I'm so glad that it was Dr. Slater. I can't say enough nice things about him. He keeps late hours so that he's almost always available. He always follows up with a phone call to see how you're doing, even in the evenings from his home. He answers questions in a sensible, non-jargony manner without making you feel like a dope. (He's a professor at the NYU teaching hospital and even the interns adore him as a teacher.) But what most impressed me and inspired me to write this review was that at our very first appointment he determined my problem wasn't heart-related, so it would have been easy for him to say, "Not my problem." Yet he's continued to follow my case, sending me off to tests that have nothing to do with cardiology and monitoring the results carefully -- and still keeps up with those follow-up phone calls! Seems like that kind of personal attention is all too lacking in the medical profession these days, so as far as I'm concerned, Dr. Slater is an all-star. read more

I was happy with Dr. Slater as my cardiologist until I recently called the office's answering service after hours (5:30pm) urgently needing a prescription refill (his office failed to call in my prescription as I requested early in the day). I apologized profusely for needing to reach him after hours, but Dr. Slater was UNBELIEVABLY rude to me over the phone - I literally could not believe how nasty he was despite my apologies. I am absolutely appalled and honestly quite shaken. I've never been spoken to this way by a physician, let alone one I've had for 3 years. I'll be looking for another cardiologist ASAP. Cannot say enough about the service of Dr Slater. I had gotten what I thought was bad news from another cardiologists but I decided to see Dr Slater after finding him on Yelp for a second opinion. So glad I did. He explained to me in detail what that other doctor meant and explained to me that it was nothing to worry about. He even sketched on a piece of paper what was going on and why it was no big deal. He took his time and at no time did I feel rushed or felt like any of my questions were dumb. When I called Dr. Slater's office in the morning with an urgent problem, not only was I able to obtain an appointment on the same day, but he was able to arrange for me to have the necessary diagnostic test at the facility prior to the visit - and he called me after regular hours with an important lab result to discuss the resulting medication adjustment. Reading the other reviews, I have little new to add. However, my experience with Dr. Slater was so positive that I'd feel guilty if I failed to chime in. During a routine physical in Westchester, my G.P thought she heard a heart murmur. She immediately jumped to discussing valve replacement techniques and suggested I see a cardiologist A. S. A. P. Pretty alarming stuff! I couldn't get a quick appointment near home, did a little investigating, found these reviews, and called Dr. Slater's office. I was seen in just a couple of days. My experience with N. Y. U. and Dr. Slater was simply as good as it gets. He did an initial assessment and was very clear about his thoughts and re-assuring about the health of my heart. I had two very basic diagnostic procedures that day, and Dr. Slater called well after hours with good news about the results. A couple of other tests were scheduled promptly. As soon as the first was completed, Dr. Slater called, cancelled the second procedure, and asked me to come to his office. He had figured out my condition. It was not serious, easy to understand in his "plain talk" description, and could be treated very simply with medication (even this was optional - not required). Expertise, care, and compassion. This is what you get from Dr. Slater. I feel very fortunate to have met this outstanding doctor. read more
