I went close to close and the barista had cleaned the machine yet she still used the machine to make my coffee. This is a customer focused business. I have been a patron of Willoughby General since 2017ish and I'm still so happy every time I go inside. First off, the owner does wonderful things for the neighborhood and fights for the historical preservation of the neighborhood itself, which we absolutely adore and respect. I remember how passionate she was when the Dangler mansion was demolished, we were too. Her store is such a bright light even when you stand outside of it, you're just happy, and then you walk inside and you see the wonderful vintage/cool stuff to buy!! There is something for everyone here - vegan people included. We used to refill our hand and dish soap on the regular here. I remember many years ago there were dub pies being delivered there and that was truly the best time.... we really miss that, but there is still plenty of yummy food options here. Just walked in here excited to try this place since I live down the street. I put in my order, a cup of coffee, breakfast burrito and croissant sandwich w goat cheese prosciutto and fig jam. I got the coffee and burrito snd waited for the croissant sandwich outside. The man working behind the counter brought out the bag with the sandwiches and then walked back inside. I looked in the bag and the croissant sandwich I ordered was instead two pieces of white bread. I walked inside to clarify what I ordered and the man who made it and delivered it didn't even bother to turn around (I was the only person in the store). The girl told me it was the sandwich I ordered they just didn't have any more croissants so they used two slices of white bread instead. Why wouldn't you tell me this when I ordered or when you delivered it? The experience was awkward and I left without a solution having to pay $9.00 for a sandwich I didn't want and didn't order. The sandwich didn't taste good and I ended up throwing it away. Coffee was mediocre and breakfast burrito nothing special. read more

WG is the best part of many of my mornings. I bring my dog, who always gets a treat from the kind and friendly staff and I get a coffee, and often over indulge in other fun things which are in abundance. Every time I'm in the staff couldn't be more friendly and welcoming. This place is a respite for me and is the definition of community. Support a local business, and try some deliciously prepared foods (everything is good from the vegan blueberry muffins which is my new favorite, to the Cobb salad, which is my all time favorite). Their bath and body products are also special. I recently bought a face paste that has transformed my skin. There's something for everyone here. This place is so fab! They sell cute, thoughtful, handmade and carefully sourced products and healthy food, which you can tell is crafted with love and the desire to feed people something of sustenance, that is also quickly accessible, which straight up--is a problem I have with bed-stuy. Sometimes I don't want to cook but when you need a quick bite the caliber skyrockets from Rocco pizza(no hate on Rocco tho!!) to like Michelin star saraghina level with a quickness. Don't listen to the negative reviews, there's a few stale cookies moaning and groaning about the prices and proclaiming GENTRIFICATION!! As if nobody has heard of the concept before. Anyone who needs an economics lesson, handmade, sustainable and independently sourced products aren't multibillion dollar corporations, so in the end the UNIQUELY curated and carefully chosen selection of goods at this store have to be a bit pricier... so everyone gets paid. These are things that you can't really just walk into any old shop in the area and buy really. It's a specialty store and to be honest if you're looking for utilitarian there are literally hundreds of bodegas and grocery stores within your reach. I think 99¢ amigo on Dekalb has us covered. Not saying that gentrification is an irrelevant discussion at all, but literally bed-stuy is like situated at the center of the gentrification convo in the United States, and I'm fairly certain and at least hopeful that the business owner takes this into account and contributes+supports the community in some way, whether it be through carrying products made by identities that are affected by things like gentrification, or another way that is their choice and honestly, it would be more disingenuous if they were shouting it in the streets like some kind of savior. Using something like Yelp to take out your anger on the fundamental evils of living in a capitalist society, by trashing a small business is basically an oxymoron, and you should just shut the fock up and get involved in activism and stop lashing out under a thin veil of a virtue signal. Not to draw on but, It's so tiring how The Cancela Merkels of our society constantly, and unfairly project their (justified) frustration with inequality and personal insecurity, undeservedly on people and things that they arbitrarily deem problematic without a larger picture. This is a very, unattractive, ignorant and uninformed version of self to project to the world, all the while simultaneously making a fool out of yourself acting like you spilled the tea and are educating people. So fockin lame lol it giving me second hand embarrassment. This place deserves 10 stars, but, if your broke, or looking for a phone charger that doesn't work you should probably go to the bodega. read more

I stumbled upon this shop while looking for sage a couple of years ago. Initially, I found it to be quite inclusive, there were transfolks & POCs working. & btwn the delicious food & friendly banter, I've made a point to pop in intermittently. Recently, ownership has changed; & while the food is palatable & more varied, there is a marked difference... The vibe is somewhere btwn a Portlandia caricature of BK & a failing business. For me, there is an undeniable air of desperation & dishonesty. In example, if you tell someone one price for a specific thing, a soup & half a sandwich combo & then make a whole sandwich & soup & charge them for both without batting an eye, you may come off as disreputable, inauthentic & incompetent. (Rather than lying & overcharge patrons- why not just cut the sandwich in half & sell the special @ the quoted price?) My sharing of poor customer service from WG is incomplete but has culminated to writing this review. And it is just that, my experience. If you are white & straight... If you've just moved into the neighborhood (much like this business), you may receive better customer service. But there are plenty of local, small businesses owned by minorities who live in this neighbourhood & treat folks with respect & have integrity... I'm happy to go there. I, earnestly, do hope that this business is supported bc I'm sure their attitudes & actions are inadvertent side effects of not yet being profitable. read more

Willoughby General is adorbs. It's cute, quaint, and a perfect promoter of Brooklyn based goodies. Plenty of local Brooklyn products, some baked goodies (apple turnover, cinnamon pull apart, etc), and drinkables like coffee. They stock cute gifts like pencil pouches, notebooks, and letterpress cards for different occasions. Cooking items like flour and baking soda are also available but I didn't look at the prices so I promise nothing on affordability on that front. The prices are pretty reasonable from what I saw: a range of items from $1 to $20 with something for any wallet. They even have these adorable pencils ($1) that are black and have Welcome to Bed Stuy written on them in gold typewriter print! Something for everyone. read more

This shop doesn't have frou frou coffee (read: lattes, mochas and cappuccinos), just regular coffee, which is fine, but not what I wanted. There was a small display case (2 shelves) of pastries and they also had some hot dishes (shakshuka) and egg sandwiches. I bought an almond croissant and left. There was a small seating area, again 3 or 4 bar stools against the window. The rest of the inventory were small items in the tiny shop. I wouldn't go out of my way to go back. read more

So I just moved in across the street from this place a little over a year ago. My roommates and I were really disappointed to see it close, but luckily they reopened soon after! This new WG is great. They're catching their stride and it's becoming more and more consistent on what I can find there. There's a small, but curated selection of personal care items, a moderate selection of good and healthy pantry fillers, and I can easily go to them for my kitchen staples of milk, eggs, cheese, bread etc. The staff have always been friendly and I love the vibe. I can't wait for spring so that I can utilize the benches they have outside. If you live in the neighborhood, I urge you to do your shopping there. Willoughby General is a wonderful little shop in Bed-Stuy that offers amazing drip coffee (that thankfully doesn't leave me feeling insane - it's mild enough to give you a boost in your step but doesn't make you feel like scaling the walls of your apartment building) and also great bagels! They have Bread Alone products, really great prepared foods (the farro salads they make are delicious, as well as the small savory pies), plus they offer a variety of baked goods (and usually a vegan option as well!) The staff is always kind - I regretfully haven't asked everyone's name when I've been in there but Lacey introduced herself today and it's always good to put a name to a friendly face. Favorite offerings: sage + palo santo bundles, Thai red curry paste, seeded crackers, nudey postcards (yup), Pilot kombucha, prosciutto, and fresh produce (mushrooms, garlic, peppers, and potatoes) - occasionally they'll sell day old bagels for $1 each and they're still so delicious! WG is awesome, plain and simple, with a lovely vibe. So happy to have stumbled upon such a place so close by! read more

I've been wanting to check this place out. I did and was unfortunately disappointed. It's not much of a "general" store as I had hoped. It has a very limited selection. It's overpriced and I hate to say it but the epitome of gentrification. I moved to this neighborhood to enjoy cheaper/ modest deals but obviously it's on the rise. There are "nicer" places popping up everywhere. I think this place needs more focus if it wants to remain under this disguise of bohemian/ friendly / but actually expensive af. A bodega offers more of life's necessities than this place. Maybe they should have studied that model and made it better. But it's very well designed and the lady was friendly. There's a lot of room for improvement, should they choose to give their customers something more. Sorry guys. Truth hurts and so do your prices - $18 for a little candle. read more

Yay! I'm so glad this spot reopened. This place is perfect, service is spot on and everything is reasonably priced. There's lots of general items and groceries (and even a recommendation box so you can request something you need!). Excellent cold brew, locally roasted by Kitten Coffee. The chicken noodle soup is soooo delicious and hearty. There's a nice collection of things you want and need...anything from crystals to organic eggs. Great, little shop in the neighborhood! Another very overrated, new place in this area: the 2 owner ladies are nice, or rather the older one is more consistently nice, maybe the younger one's becoming an unfun pill-of-a-person because they're not getting enough business, & how could things be any different when THEY HARDLY HAVE ANYTHING FOR SALE IN HERE?! You feel like maybe you're inside a gallery or a movie set, in that ur inside a fake-shop because there's simply not much for sale. Do you really think $7.5 tiny cans of tuna & expensive packages of sliced ham are all this neighborhood needs? Its a nice little place you have here, but you need to round it out with more common staples of nyc life that a wider variety of people want(albeit with ur sophisticated spin), or this place will simply not survive. read more

I finally stopped in this place the other day. I really dig the space, the vibe and the availability of good coffee beans, meats, cheese and pastries. Finally got a chance to stop by Willoughby General. Will definitely be back. The store has a nice range of fancy things for when you need a gift or a treat (candles, etc.) but also some good everyday things like coffee, cheese, bread, etc. I had coffee and the cinnamon bun. My friend bought a candle. What's nice about an independently owned store is that you get to see a narrowed-down selection of items that the owner recommends in some way, versus the endless selection of the internet. What's good about Willoughby General is the range of things on offer. Some fancy, some regular. Some luxury, some practical. Definitely one of those "never know what you'll find" stores, but at the very least you will find a reasonably priced cup of good coffee in a pocket of Brooklyn that doesn't a ton of coffee options. read more
