However, the way the teenage lifeguards spoke to us was so utterly disrespectful, but whatever...that was no problem at first. We hung out by the lake for about an hour and a half playing and listening to music. Meanwhile all the lifeguards were screaming, laughing, listening to music and lounging by the pool sunbathing because it was clear and sunny by now. We timed it and waited 30 minutes after the last thunder sound to go ask if we could go in. They told us the last sound was one minute ago. Uh what? Okay... As we were leaving, I decided to check if they had a number I could have to call and ask if the pool is open. I was banging on the gate yelling HELLO! HELLO! Even though they were right by the gate, they couldn't hear me over their laughing. After awhile, they looked back over their shoulder and utter "Yeah?" I asked 'Could I speak to someone face to face please?' And they didn't even move and said "what?" I was appalled and so disgusting by their attitude. I see this behavior in my high school classes, but if these are lifeguards representing the community we pay to be apart of, I never want to go back again. My 6-year-old son even looked at me and said 'They are not very nice, right?' Pahh!!

But she did point us to this one. It's an older neighborhood in Sugar Land and it looks like it's been there forever. But it's totally worth finding: - Well maintained bike/jogging trail that goes for a couple of miles - Skate park for the teenage boys in your family - Tennis - Baseball/Softball fields that are well maintained and used by the Little League - Sand Volleyball - A public pool The pool is pretty basic but it ranges from 3 to 12 feet and has 2 diving boards. It's also dirt cheap. Sugar Land residents pay $1 for kids under 18 before 5 and $2.25 for adults before 5, $0.50 for kids/$1.00 for adults after 5. Non residents can use the pool for a little more: $1.25 for kids under 18 and $2.85 for adults before 5, $0.65 for kids and $1.25 for adults after 5. We eventually found Memorial Park in a newer part of Sugar Land. But the pool at City Park is a good option for the summer if you don't have ready access to one in your neighborhood and the trails are well maintained. If your kids are into skateboards, the skate park has shade and looked pretty popular.

In reality, you just need to pay attention to whether or not your kid and their teacher are a good match. My son was with one teacher for almost year with very slow progress and no float test pass. I think it was due to the combo of teacher being more cautious type and my son being more scared type. He was a 4 almost 5 year old in a class with 3 years olds. Anyway, it was my fault for not paying more attention and switching him to another class sooner. He is did great with his new teacher and passed his float test (finally). We had to switch him again recently due to scheduling conflicts and I will be more attentive to his progress from now on.

The teachers at this other school were all high school students that didn't have much experience. We decided to take her back to her favorite teacher Mr Charlie at this location and so far she has progressed tremendously. The only thing I don't like is the parking is not that great since it's inside a neighborhood and you have to park in front of houses sometimes.

The only things missing were the tall slide, merry-go-rounds, and a jungle gym. However, the old (and now, kitschy), well made and maintained pieces make this one of my favorite parks in Houston. Also, its a piece of old Houston; it was established in 1926. This Rice University area park has a neighborhood organization that takes excellent care of the area. To the tune of $10,000 per year. As well they should, it's one of the last bastions of built-to-last playgrounds. Steel and wood and charm, no plastic. Who doesn't remember climbing on the pumpkin stagecoach at Pumpkin Park? Fleming Park is meant to be charming and unforgettable. If playground equipment isn't your thing, there are plenty of picnic tables, oak trees, and general relaxation areas. A perfect pocket picnic park. There's also a couple of tennis courts, two B-ball hoops, and a baseball diamond. There is no sign for the park, only a list of park rules and a community board. If you're uncertain that you are at the correct park, look for a 15' Totem Pole Bird House that was erected in 1991 by Fletcher Mackey. It is constructed of Cypress and Cedar Wood, ceramic, copper, and painted steel. One item of sadness, some idiot(s) stole the lamb spring ride back in January. There are signs on the community board with a photo and plea for its return. Rather, I should say "her." She was named "Mary the Lamb." Again, she's very, very cute, has a snow white fleece, and a giant metal spring attached to her underside.

This is the main community pool for the subdivision of Telfair. Located next to the Central Hall…read moreand the Houston Museum of Natural Science at Sugar Land at University Blvd and New Territory Blvd. Since this is a community pool, you would need a pool tag to get in. The pool tag is essentially a key fob (2 per household) that raises the parking arms leading to the parking lot for the pool and entering the pool. Enter the pool, sign in on the tablet, find an empty spot, and have fun! For you long time Telfair residents who have just thought about checking out the pool for the first time in almost 12 years, check your key fobs (if you ever applied for one), if they are the white ones, you need to get them changed at the Telfair Central Hall during office hours. This pool is fairly large with children's play and kiddie pool areas that have water sprouts and geysers for kids to get in and cool off. There is also a slightly deeper area for older kids to enjoy the heightened buoyancy deeper water offers. Off to the side, there are some lap pool areas offering more serious swimmers to do their laps. Perhaps the main attraction is none other than the towering, multi-story water slide that... If it is open, it has water shooting out of it. If you have gone on a cruise ship and seen those large water slides on the top deck of the ships and are kicking yourselves of not being able to work up the nerve to try it? Now is your chance to do it, and you don't have to pay to use (that is, additional, except for being a resident). As with all large water slides sending people down the chute with gravity's assistance, please remove all loose articles (like jewelry, glasses, etc.) before going on the slides. Because if they fly off, who knows if you will ever find them (whole) again. There are restrooms in the facility and lifeguards on duty when the pool is open. One thing I do wish that it has are shower stalls inside to allow residents more convenience and privacy to change out of their wet swimwear before getting into their cars. A few hand dryers won't hurt either, but then again, people will start asking about lockers and benches like the Aquatic Center, good ol' Aquatic Center. For a community pool, it is still a very good one. The other community pool closer to our house doesn't open as early as this one and certainly isn't as big. So we will be coming here more often. The real challenge now is to get our little 2 year old to start liking the water.
