It may have taken a few years, but the Alief Neighborhood Center finally came into fruition early…read morelast year to help revitalize one of Houston's most vibrant neighborhoods. For both outdoor and indoor activities, this is an incredible option for folks in the community. The space is substantial with a bevy of options that include a skatepark, swimming pool, tennis courts, an enormous children's playground, and lots of room for folks looking to exercise outdoors. It is a pet friendly area and a perfect destination for families, social gatherings, and even special occasions. Parking is abundant all throughout the property. The neighborhood center includes a gym + fitness center (#1), basketball courts, and indoor walking track. There are venue spaces for both adults and children for up to 25 people at no cost. There is also after school enrichment programs for kids, teens, and additional programs for seniors. There are volunteer opportunities and community development programming throughout the year. Because it's still fairly new, the facilities and everything are in good shape. Time will tell if they will be able to maintain it but for now it serves as an ideal resource for folks looking to get active and be a part of the Alief community. Best of all, it's all free. __________ (#1) Note: there is no shower or sauna.

This might be the most comprehensive community center in all of Houston. Planned in conjunction…read morewith Houston's Park/Rec, Health, and Library departments, I imagine it must have taken decades of coordination and follow-through to complete. You can find anything and everything related to community gatherings here: a skatepark, enormous children's playground, ping pong tables, indoor basketball courts, lifting equipment, lounges, library... the list goes on. I stopped by to finish some remote work in the library. It shares space with a kids enrichment area, so I recommend noise cancelling headphones if you need to focus. It's not as expansive as some of the other libraries, but then again, the Houston Public Library system has set a high bar for itself. The endless list of recreational activities deserves so much praise, but this center offers valuable services as well. I saw countless residents lined up for tax guidance, immigration law, and a clinic for women and children. Alief especially benefits from this establishment as a minority predominant community, with many of its residents living in less privileged conditions. I don't think I've ever seen a public facility this massive. I'm so proud of Alief's local leaders and the City of Houston for making these plans a reality.

There is always sand in the indoor pool. Also, there are constantly women who get in the jacuzzi with only a towel on and it is so unsanitary. No one enforces the swim suit covering required.

I've been a Lifetime member on and off since 2013, and consistently at this location for the past…read moretwo years. There was a time I truly looked forward to coming here, but lately, that feeling has shifted. Earlier this year (around February or March), there was an incident where a man entered the women's locker room - far enough in that it was clearly not an accident. I reported it immediately to staff, but I never received any follow-up, which felt unsettling, especially given how tucked away the women's locker room is from the men's. Additionally, the equipment at this location feels outdated compared to other clubs. There are frequent maintenance issues, and the overall layout doesn't seem optimized for peak times. If you're hoping to train legs for example between 4-7 PM Monday through Wednesday, be prepared to wait - often long - for machines or platforms etc. Interuptions during your sets are the norm. Even gyms with a significantly lower price point, like EOS and planet fitness, have more versatile equipment (e.g., a dual abductor/adductor machine), which could be a worthwhile upgrade here. Crowding has also become a major issue. Over the past couple of months, the gym has felt consistently packed regardless of the time of day. If there's a new sign-up promotion running, it may be worth re-evaluating how it's impacting existing members. It's incredibly difficult to follow a structured workout when you have to constantly rearrange your routine just to get access to equipment (if you're lucky). Parking has also become a huge deterrent and adds another layer of stress to each visit. The class schedule is not great either, as a yogi, i rarely have the opportunity to attend a class, and wish they had AM sessions available. Pickleball courts are fresh and new, but are first come first serve, and since they have been installed, have not had a chance to use them, due to strenuous wait times. Not to mention the amount of people who walk around with tripods at peak times recording, hence why i pay the fees to not be around people recording.. While I appreciate the under-26 discount, which brings the monthly cost down to around $220, I'm beginning to question whether the value is still there. I would really encourage management to consider updating equipment and rethinking capacity management - especially at peak hours. It's difficult to understand how this location is being ran when other nearby locations offer a much better experience for a similar price point. The one thing they do right is customer experience. I always enjoy getting to speak with the front desk staff and trainers. I really hope this feedback is taken into consideration for improvements, and helps out anyone who is considering spending $3000 a year to work out here.
