I played this course for the first time and probably my last!!! really disappointed. Arrived early to hit a warm up bucket, but they were out of range balls or don't have enough of them. I need a new glove and they didn't have anything to sell. The snack bar was not open at all. most course have food and drinks. The condition of the course was in poor condition. in some areas was very wet and over watered that the cart tires make big marks. The grass around the tree was super long, like it hasn't been cut in weeks. hmmmm maybe they want you to loose your ball so they can have enough range balls. For the money I paid, don't think this is the best place to play. it's a bit run down and not kept up well. lots of dead tree that need to be taken out. Put some money in this course, then you can charge a fair amount. read more

Don't bother. Worst run golf course you can find. Billy Casper would be ashamed of how they do business. Set up a tee time online. Must have a credit card to guarantee the tee time. But try and change it. Most ridiculous, frustrating experience of my 30 years of golfing. Although it's a 714 number it is picked up in Florida, so you are not talking to the golf course. Tried 6 different times to talk to the course and no one ever confirmed that they were at the course. All of them said they had restrictions so they could not change it. They said it was prepaid. My confirmation did not say prepaid, but to be paid at the course and I would be charged for 4 players. Finally got through to someone who said they could change it to 3 people. Said I would get an email confirmation. Never did. I did get a confirmation that I had 4 players. So I called again and again. Same thing Florida. Finally got a guy who said he could do it. Then after trying he said he could not. If he tried to change it that I might lose the tee time. Talk to a manager? Good luck. So I said cancel it, it's a ratty course anyhow. Oh and by the way, good luck trying to cancel the tee time online. Course conditions? Equal to playing in a cow pasture without the cow pies. Ride in a cart and you will have your teeth chipped from all the bumps. Walk the course and you could turn an ankle. The homeless camped out on the 16th hole are a nice touch. Greens are okay. Why play it? Cheap and it appeared it was easy to get a tee time. read more

This is the best value in Orange County. One of the few courses that is easy to walk and usually open to play any time. Don't expect Pebble Beach. The fairway conditions reflect the very low price, but they do a good job with the greens considering the traffic. So glad this place is here. It was great being able to get back on a golf course after all this COVID-19 shutdown. Air was clean and weather was beautiful !!!! Only SAD thing was on the greens. I know golfers are not to touch the sticks, but literally having sticks on the green is ridiculous. If you can't put the normal flag sticks then put the ones for the putting greens out there. Just golfed there today. The course is in poor condition, the fairways are bumpy and are more weeds than grass. Greens are in ok condition. The low rating is mostly for the horrible customer service. The attendant in the pro shop was extremely rude and short tempered. Most golf course do not mind if you check in early. I was joining up with a large group and got there early to practice and this guy was having nothing of it. Refused to take my payment and would only sell me a small bucket for no explicable reason. I wanted to pay for a large bucket. He was rude and clearly had never heard of customer service. There really is no reason to come back with so many courses in the area that are ready willing and able to take my hard earned money. read more

Golf course employees were friendly and helpful when our golf cart broke down! But!! Here we go! Course needs some work! No bathrooms on the course,very little place to drink water! I had to pee behind a tree !! We got paired with two men that the starter said were nice guys! Really! We told them that we never played the course before! So we asked them were the second hole flag was and they said just hit the ball it doesn't matter! So we asked them again! They got mad and said playing with them was not working and went on there own way! Thanks god! They were the most rude people I have meant in the 40 plus years playing golf! Played here twice, and I think that's enough for me. Had an early 8:07 tee time, but didn't tee off until 8:45. Pace of play was terribly slow, 5.75 hour round. The course was in one of the worst shapes I have ever seen. Large dirt patches on the fairways, unkempt bunkers with weeds, mud and large puddles all over. A few holes were almost unplayable because of the bad conditions. Greens were bad as well. Also, my friend and I played at this course and had our credit cards frauded on the same day a week later. The clubhouse is the only place we both used our cards. He lives out of town and was only visiting, so I don't think this was a coincidence, just FYI to all. We told management and they said they will look into it. One plus is the carts are new and have GPS. It was a nice touch but did not save the experience. read more

I've been playing Willowick gc since the early 70's and almost weekly since 2000 and it is currently in the WORST CONDITION EVER!!! Every time I've played lately the sprinklers on the fairways are going full force on at least 10 of the fairways making it almost Impossible to avoid puddles and having to run in and hit your 2nd & 3rd (par5) then run out to avoid getting soaked, plus the fairways are NOT mowed and have large clumps of high grass & gofer holes/mounds making the so called fairways look like a links ob one!! Even with a senior discount it is NOT Worth the green fees!! Really sad as this was my Home course for over 30 years but No More. read more

Course has been getting worse and worse every day. Guy who works the pro shop is probably the worst thing about the place. I stood at the window for about 5 mins before he even realized I was trying to check in, guessing he fell asleep. We had 3 players and wouldn't give us a 2nd cart, which made no sense. He then got frustrated and gave us another key to a cart and started to act like he was doing us a favor and they don't normally do that. How TF we suppose to put 3 people in one cart. They ran out of range balls today (just to lazy to go have someone drive around the range and pick them up). Right next to the check in area someone literally took a dump and no one cleaned it up. There are kids from the neighborhood running around the course, and there are still homeless people who live on the course. Course is probably in the worst condition it's ever been. Wish I was making some of this up, but hey if you don't believe me feel free to ruin your day for $50 and go to Willowick. read more

I don't even know if you can call it a course, the greens aren't even greens the have patches of I don't even know what they are, trash everywhere. To start off the day we checked in the pro shop and the guy just stared at me, I asked what and he goes it's not free you know, as we already put our card information online thinking that would be paying for it. (Pro shop guy is a total a hole) To top it all off they kick us out saying we used a driver on a par three and that we went up a curb. If you are looking for a budget course drive down the street to David L Baker you will have a much better experience with a way more maintained course. Are you the type of golfer that likes to get a little freaky? You admit to a golf fetish that requires a sense of danger, a heightened chance of being murdered, to get your kicks? Then do I have the golf course for you. There are so many ways to get your life stolen here, that I was confused as to whether I was playing golf or Mortal Kombat. Fatality Option #1 (beginner): The fairways, greens, tee boxes are all so tight here that you will be alarmed by, "Fore!!!" once per hole, at minimum. And since there are so many options as to where that projectile could be coming from, you better just tuck and cover, or you're dead. A golf ball bounced a yard from my face as I was waiting at a tee box. The funny part is, it wasn't even that bad of a shot. The green was just that close to me. Fatality Option #2 (normal): Some of the holes have some very scenic gang neighborhoods for you to enjoy as you play. Usually I would be jealous of someone that owned a home on a golf course. Not when it's a trailer. Wear the wrong colors, accidentally show something that too closely resembles a "W" when waving to your friends, expect to take a couple to the chest. Don't worry, GolfSmith has some great deals on bulletproof vests. Fatality Option #3 (advanced): Every hole was backed up. We were waiting at every tee box for the group in front of us to tee off, sometimes for 2 groups to tee off. So on a couple holes when someone in our group had a bad drive, we'd hit another shot since we knew we would be waiting for our 2nd shot, and at the next tee box anyways. When the group behind us drove up on us while taking these shots, they got a little cranky. Their inability to assess the situation, and realize our 2nd drive had no effect on their completion time, lead to an increase in their anger when we laughed at them. If you play your cards right in this situation, you can get beaten to death with a golf club. The only way a true golfer would want to go out. Like a Samurai warrior. In conclusion, unless you have a murder fetish, $40 is way too much to pay for this course. read more

I am really not a fan of this golf course. It's not the prettiest course in town and pretty expensive at $26 for the back 9 holes only. I've played here twice and just never got that relaxing and pleasant feeling that golf provides for me. The fairways are wide but the layout is not that great. The greens and fairways aren't in the best condition either. I love all the big trees that separate these wide fairways but the views outside of the golf course makes you feel like you are at recess in elementary school in the middle of a sketchy neighborhood. Also, had breakfast here and was devastated by the quality of food and service. We were literally the only people sitting at the table and the 1 lady that was working there did not even get to us until about 10min after we sat down. Are you kidding me? Horrible Customer Service. On the plus side the pace of play is pretty fast. They do a decent job scheduling tee times but that's about the only positive thing I can say about this course And the food was average but cheap. All in all, this is a decent course but for the money, I would prefer to play elsewhere. read more

So a group of friends and I decide that we would play here because one of my friends has a discount book for lowered rates. Great! Tee time was set to 10:40AM and we get there at 10:15 and walk into the pro shop to check in and well no one was in there. I waited about 20 minutes before someone came in to check us in. As we were checking in the person was giving us some major attitude. Started telling us that we couldn't play till 11 because our discount cards don't apply till 11AM. Well then why would we be given a 10:40AM tee time? I purchase a few balls for the round and he says to me, "You need balls to? You could have put it with your green fees." .... sorry? Then he tells us, "Well get on the green because you're next." I was quite taken back by such disrespect to a customer especially at a golf course. Anyway, onto the play. The course is pretty easy, a few nice long par 5s and a few tricky legs; nonetheless, a great course to take your beginner to intermediate buddies. Tee boxes aren't the best maintained, but you really can't expect much more from a municipal course. I would give the course a 3-4 star rating; however, with the morning starting off the way it did in the pro shop I really can't. Even if it is a municipal course, I expect some level of respect from a fellow golfer. This is a game of golf, show some class. read more

For people just learning the game or wanting to work on their game, this is the perfect course. If you're a golfer looking to challenge yourself, this is not the perfect course. The Course: If someone told me Willowick was the first golf course in Orange County I would believe them. (Shared tee boxes, short holes, tight layout, very flat, dicey neighborhood...) But despite all of those factors, I enjoyed it here. The course is in good shape, especially for what you pay. The par 3's were tricky enough to make things interesting. Facilities: The bar area is nice and looks like they just remodeled a few years ago. Like I said, it's got a very old school feel to it...because it is. Pace of play: I'll be honest, I was ready to walk off this place about 4 holes because it was so backed up, but a couple of regulars told me it would open up after 7 and sure enough it did. Finished the round in a little under 5 hours on a Saturday afternoon. Value: This is where I got to give a "lesser" public course like Willowick the nod over some others. With the Donovan Daily email list you can get your green fee, cart and lunch for $35 on a weekend. Make a short drive though some of the less than stellar areas of Santa Ana and you're there. read more

Lots of negative reviews here but I have played this course 20 times of so over the last 10 years and it is always in pretty good shape. Yeah yeah the neighborhood is not the best but I have never had a problem. Miss the days when this course was FREE on Christmas, first come first serve. Weekend play is slow but every course in OC under $50 is slow on the weekend so if you want a 4-1/2 hr round go pay $100 or drive 50 miles. For some reason or another I really like this course as a tuner. If we're going to be playing somewhere nice, we like to come here first to work out some kinks and just have a good time. The course has decent length but at the same time have some par 4's that you can really work on your iron play of the tee's. I've played this course more than a dozen times, and each time it has been in great condition. This course doesn't provide the thrills of other places--it is a very flat and very wide course with no fairway bunkers and large greens. But even so, it is always fun to play on because of the condition of the course, which has always been great, to my experience. The pace of play here is somewhat slow, as this course is clearly catered to the more well-matured portion of population. But I see this "downside" as an actual upside, as the company that I have had playing this course has been colorful, entertaining, and gratifying. One clear downside that I see with this course is its location. It is not in the best of neighborhoods, and I have heard reports of people being threatened on the last hole of the course (this hole is right next to a public park). I am certain that these incidents are few and far between, so as long as golfers play with a modicum of awareness all should be well. Otherwise, a great course to simply relax on, and a great first-course for someone who has been practicing and has been itching to get out to play. It's a great place to really put practice into work. This course also has a small pro shop, grass practice range, small restaurant (I've never been inside before), and small putting green. read more

This is the worst that I have seen this golf course... Weeds all over the fairways as big as the gopher mounds, they have taken over the grass.. Sand traps in fairly good condition, could use more sand... Greens could be in better condition, alot of divots.. The fairways are covered with gopher holes and dirt... About 75% of the people that are playing do not wear masks, very little social distancing. The worse thing is that they are allowing golf tournaments... No control, poorly managed... read more

Yes, most of what has been written is true, so I won't re-hash it. We had a great deal from groupon ($45 for two players, including cart), so we headed out earlier today to enjoy the sunshine. #1 upside - no water, great for beginner. #2 downside - pace of play and rude golfers (people, please use your manners - do you kiss your mom with that mouth?) My #1 suggestion to management - the course needs yellow tees...some of these dang holes are over 500 yards and for a lady golfer, that's too much. My #2 suggestion to management - don't allow 5-somes - they completely slow everything down and we spent the entire day being chased down fairways by 5 chuckleheads with bad manners who hit up on us on every hole (and yes, we have a good pace of play so we weren't dragging our feet!) Or as an alternative - HIRE A MARSHAL!!! So, don't pay full price, wait for a coupon, don't golf at twilight, watch your personal belongs (yes, at the 16th hole, kids jump the fence and play at the corner as if it was a park), wear a helmet and be prepared to wait...we had a 5 hour round. It's not in bad shape, but today it was super wet and muddy...the food/drink is reasonably priced. read more

Played a round 2 days ago and really enjoyed it. Teed off at 9:08am and finished at 1pm. Not many players on the course so we had a very relaxed round. We were a threesome and were joined by a solo to make a foursome. Nice to meet you Paul! I recently got back into golf so hadn't played Willowick in over 30 years. I must admit that the course is in a little rough shape overall but still very playable. The greens were in excellent shape. Very soft so approach shots bit well but still putted fast. The fairways are fairly wide but are lined with very old, large trees so you get a good challenge if you don't hit a straight shot off the tees. The fairways were in pretty good shape but there were a few extremely thin areas that could use some work. The course is flat but the greens are elevated and most are pretty large. There are enough sand traps to keep it interesting and most were fairly hard surfaced so could use some more sand. Several traps were missing rakes and probably had been stolen by a few homeless folks hanging around. (In the middle of our round, a cop car drove across the fairways to run a few off.) Carts are available and have GPS screens which worked well. There is a driving range with great distance markers that show the yardage, not just painted posts like most other ranges around here use. While we didn't use them, there appears to be 2 putting greens, one for putting and one for chipping practice. The pro shop was staffed by a very friendly older gentleman with a great sense of humor. However, other than a few balls and tees, it wasn't stocked with much. Also, the cafeteria in the club house had a very limited selection of soft drinks and snacks. It appears the course management was recently changed and have some future plans. However, the course owner (City of Garden Grove) is considering redevelopment to other uses rather than a golf course. And, as the course is physically located in Santa Ana and controls the zoning, the future of the course is in jeopardy. It appears Santa Ana and nearby residents would like the course converted into a park. Well, who knows what will happen? For myself, my son Kevin, and his buddy Tommy, we enjoyed our round of golf and plan to get a few more rounds in over the next year just in case Willowick GC goes the way of the Dodo bird. read more

To Willowick Management, Reserved a Tee Times on golf now  website for today August 14th 2021. I checked in with the golf club at 0806 for a Tee time at 08:30. Club house told me to be at the tee at 8:25am. The course was allowing groups of five to tee off, when it came to my tee time there  was one group of five people leaving the first tee and another group of six people forming at the tee box. I asked one of them what their tee time was and he said 8:30 and I told him great I'm playing with you. Within a few minutes another two people came up on the tee box. So now we have a total of 7 people  at 8:30am. When I questioned the staff about the problem he indicated that three of the guys were from the group ahead, not knowing that one of them had already indicated that he had the same tee time as me. So the staff member was telling me a bold face lie. I request a refund and will never play the track again. I have played the course in the past, but seldom play this course unless I take more than 2 months away from the game. The staff is less than professional and the course is poorly maintained.  I would not waste your time on this course unless you're working on a small budget  and have a high tolerance  for incompetence. The course is not challenging, but can help with checking your distance after a long layoff from golf. Anyone who loves a quality golf experience will stay away from Willowick Golf  Course, this is not the first time that I have had a trash experience at the track, but it will be the last.  I try to play once a week and have decided to play courses that are at minimum care about the customer experience and up keep of the course.  This may cost me an extra $30 to $75, but in the long run it's about the experiences. My belief is the course should be shut down as the management seems to only be able to maintain the chip and putting area. I'm going to contact the local city administration to see what can be done as other reviews of the course speak to a cesspool of issues.  Report to golfnow and advise they would be better pulling this course off of their site. Employee named Sean is so unprofessional . We trying to get a tee time past 2pm today and he said there's no tee time until 5pm! When u can see the course is pretty empty . Then the other employee came and my husband asked if there's a tee time and we got it less then 20mins. Shaun is mad and trying to be personal because i cancelled my golf lesson from him. Reasons why i cancelled is that he always make a reasons when im setting a time to have a lesson. 1st reason is he need to take his mom to the doctors appt. 2nd is no golf balls in the morning 3rd is have something to do with my wife. So, who u think wants to have a lesson with him if he have all the reasons in the world. And today, he dont want to give us a tee time when u see the course is empty! We been playing to this course for a quite time and even its busy we got a tee time just so unbelievable that he will say that we need to wait for 3hrs to get one. So petty! read more

It's gotten ever better since the last time I played here... Well... by better I mean the carts now have GPS! How awesome is that? The local Santa Ana Muni has GPS enabled golf carts to help better plan all your shots. While this didn't turn me into Tiger by any means, it certainly took a lot of the guess work out of my game. Go early in the morning and you can pretty much just walk on at any time you choose during the week. Tee times are still always the preferred method to book but the starter seemed good with either. In reality, the course isn't in the best place but it wasn't too bad. My teen was playing in an SCPGA tourney. I figured that they wouldn't throw a bunch of kids some place that was so bad. I was here on a Sunday with a GolfNow deal, late morning tee time. When I arrived, I was told that they were out of carts, and suddenly I understood why there was a mass of people loitering outside the pro shop. They were running an hour behind as a result, and were assigning carts from groups that were just finishing. As expected, all of the carts in my group lost all electrical power at various points in the back 9. Each time, the staff member acted as if we were inconveniencing him. Not that I needed the help, but an offer to help switch all of our equipment would be nice, instead of arms folded with a blank stare. I don't think it is too much to ask that a course have an adequate supply of carts for its customers (after all, isn't that what a "cart fee" is for?) Apart from that, the greens are in ok shape, but the course looked really worn and tired. The bunkers were nearly rock hard, and the grass was very much overcome with weeds. For what you get, it is way overpriced (normal rate is $50 with a cart on weekends). Compare this to a course such as Los Verdes, for example, where maximum price is $45.50, and there you get a decently maintained course with beautiful ocean views. read more

Condition: 2 stars I played in a tournament here today and the golf course is in terrible condition. I guess it isn't as bad as some courses, however it certainly isn't anywhere close to nice. The fairways are either overgrown or bare, the greens are extremely soft as if mud were under the grass, and most of the tee boxes have long, inconsistent grass. Luckily I didn't have to find out the quality of their sand today. Most of the holes are caved in and the rough around the greens is so thick you're lucky to get it anywhere close. Layout: 4 stars I'm actually a huge fan of the layout of this course. If it were nicer, I might play here. It's pretty wide open off the tee, but you can still get into quite a bit of trouble. I think that this course provides a good challenge, especially their greens and around them. Some of the greens seemed impossible but I made putts on them. Pro shop: 3 stars Friendly staff but pretty bare in terms of what they have-- tees, balls, not many clothes, cheap sunglasses, and scant equipment. Snack bar: 4 stars Good hot dog today and good drink. I suspect they have pretty solid food. read more
