Was Jones'n for something savory, salty, buttery and just good ole comfort food last night and decided to check out a new spot Willows and Pine. So glad I did!!! The good: The space, the vibe, the comfort and ease at which you feel immediately upon entering the space was palpable. The great: Chef Michauxnée Olier came to greet me when I asked for Kai (I'll get to why in a minute) to chop it up a bit and because of that interaction w/Chef I decided to stay awhile as I ordered pick up and just intended on picking up my food and thanking the young man Kai who took my order as he was just the most pleasant, attentive and accommodating person I've ever experienced taking a food order. And the only reason I even decided to do a pick up order instead of delivery as I wanted to again thank him personally and let him and the owner know just how pleasant of a young man he is. The better: As I'm sitting at the bar I decided to have a drink and kick back for a few tics and catch the end of the game. I asked Kamila (the bartender) if she could recommend something and she served me up a Summer romance and it did not disappoint! It was refreshing, and just deliciously light and fruity and I don't usually drink cocktails. Kamila was super dope and friendly too and we also discovered we shared an affinity for whisky too so again, it's just a WHOLE vibe going down with EVERYONE I'm interacting with in this spot, including the patrons! As I'm chopping it up with the rest of the folks at the bar a young man who I later find out is the son of the owner brings me a bowl of something and a spoon and he says compliments of the Chef, and your drink is the house too! I'm beside myself at this point and really feeling like I'm back home in Jersey. What was in this bowl was pure chowder crack! This shrimp and crawfish chowder was liquid GOLD- Savory, soulful, perfectly seasoned and the right consistency of the chowder as it was too thick or thin it had kale and potatoes and loaded with shrimp and crawfish! I don't even do chowders and soup like that but this right here...OMG, it was pure HEAVEN!!! I was damn near speechless as I devoured all of it. My pick up order included and delivery from the previous night included the fried oyster mushrooms entree with cabbage and rice and beans, mac n cheese, extra gravy (just because the gravy is like that!) and the oyster mushroom sliders. Man, she puts her foot in those oyster mushrooms as they're perfectly seasoned too and the cabbage looks plain but it AIN'T! I've been in the Oakland for 10 years now and this is by far the BEST soul food I've had and the HOSPITALITY is second to NONE! I really needed that experience as I have been feeling so homesick and had given up on finding any soul food in the bay area. Chef Michauxnée Olier, Kai, Kamila, Son and her Sister were there at the bar too so it was a whole FAMILY AFFAIR up in Willows and Pine and I truly want to say THANK YOU from all of my heart. This is my new and favorite spot and I will be sharing you with everyone I know- believe that!!! Ohhh my goodness!!! Where do I begin??? Me n my Bestie went to dine here, and it was an amazing experience! Our server Kamela was very attentive to our needs and gave us excellent recommendations. I ordered the chicken etoufe, and my Bestie ordered the oyster mushroomsliders. I also ordered the summer romance wine cocktail, and it did the job!!! This is the best Southern Creole food I have had in the Bay... by far. I had the étouffée, mac & cheese, and biscuits. My wife had the gumbo. The kids quietly sat down and ate without making a fuss or trying to run around (that's how you KNOW it was good). Will I be back. Of course! I might need to put W&P on the calendar. The food is really good. Quite expensive but food Was great. What wasn't so great was THE OWNER. Her attitude is very poor. They experienced a power outage which was totally no fault of there's but not even an apology was offered. We ( a few customers that showed up) were TOLD that some items were available, however when the owner returned she ANGRILY said, "Im not cooking in the dark!" Went here with a few of my friends for the first time & seemed like a strange place to have a restaurant after walking inside. It felt like mainly a bar spot.. With a small side room for dining, but the small side room was a bit uncomfortable and crowded feeling. While eating, you can hear everyone else around you talking and echoing loudly off the walls of the room! It was tough to hear ourselves talk to each other. Food was just OK and overpriced so, wasn't with the money tbh. The staff were very nice, which was the best part about this experience. All of us were a bit disappointed. The food is made as ordered so there will be a wait (ours was prob about 30-45min but we were talking and enjoying one another's company so it was ok for us), BUT it's worth the wait!! The food was so fresh and the customer service was outstanding! I ordered the Chilean Sea Bass, my friend ordered the jambalaya, we also ordered the Mac and cheese, pomegranate lemonade and the banana pudding waffle. The sea bass was so fresh and so good! After talking to the chef at Costco this morning and telling me that they only make Gumbo on Fridays at the restaurant. I had to try it out. So my boyfriend and I went and It was the best choice we've made. He ordered the jambalaya, and i ordered the gumbo, and we also ordered Mac and Cheese. Sorry, there are no pics of the jambalaya or mac and cheese, but they are a must try. All the food was so delicious. The flavor and spices were on point. The Gumbo was the best one I have tasted in a long time. It reminded me of my dad's gumbo and made me miss his cooking for sure. The service was great. Chef Michauxnée son took our order very polite. It is a small restaurant. We did have to wait, but not for a long time, and they made sure to check on us, so that was greatly appreciated. It is such a nice date night dinner. We had a good time. Catering service was terrible. The customer service was just awful. Gave me a salad with no dressing, no table clothes, no dessert plates and no follow up by the caterer. I knew there was a problem when the wanted the entire amount of money prior to providing services. I wanted to give an opportunity to a black business and support. Never again. I only gave one star was because the short ribs , and Mac and cheese was good. How embarrassing is it to tell your guest you have to re-use your dinner plate as your desert plate. This is a very quaint ma and pa shop with family photos of the founders family. They actually come from a well known restaurant my father in law spoke highly of called THE BARN. They make the most of their space with parking across the street in a small lot for shoppers of the Fruitvale/MacArthur area. Located right next to the closed B of A, it's not a lot of space. BUT BOY DO THEY PACK A WALLOP OF A SERVICE, AND FLAVOR UP IN THERE. Brunch's menu wasn't big, as a matter of fact,I had to order grits with nothing, and frittatas. OMG, the grits were not bad, but the frittatas were so good. And my baby girl got the peach biscuit, she almost didn't get any. Their ox/bull tails are delicious. Family photos displayed thruout showed the restaurants rich history. Staffing was very friendly and more than adequate.
