Stopped by Alma for a pre-concert dinner at the Fox and was very glad we stopped by here. Let's get into it... Ambiance - The interior is nothing to write home about. There's a handful of tables and some outdoor seating as well. Decor is minimal. But it's an overall comfy place to dine and we enjoyed dining in. Service - The service was good. You order at the counter, like a deli, and then when the food is ready they bring it to your table. There's an area with complimentary water and utensils and we helped ourselves to those, but the gentleman working also grabbed utensils for our food in case we didn't grab our own. He was very friendly. Food - The food was great! I had the chile relleno plate and the chile relleno was delicious. The sauce was good, the rice and beans were good, and the corn tortillas were also good. My wife had tacos and she enjoyed her tacos as well. No complaints at all about the food. Overall, it had good and friendly service and delicious food and that definitely makes it a return candidate next time we are going to the Fox. Great spot! read more

I'm glad Alma is here. There are a lot of Mexican restaurants in this part of the neighborhood. Not as many as the Fruitvale, but still, I think most of the places nearby feature Mexican cuisine. Despite that, Alma earns a place because it features a good value in a clean location that's not too fancy. Zeroing in on the food that I had, the tortillas are nothing to write home about, but the proteins are very good. I liked the Baja Fish and Carnitas. I thought the Chicken was the best. So flavorful. Small street tacos for four dollars, so appropriately priced. Friendly enough and fast enough. I ate in. Tons of tables to choose from. Super basic decor. Spanish-language dance videos on the screen. Good food, without breaking the bank. If you want better tacos, you're probably paying six seven dollars. read more

Tinga and the Carnitas were excellent. The huevos con chorizo surprisingly didn't have alot of flavor. Black beans and rice were very plain. Corn tortillas were nothing special at all. Habanero hot sauce had a very weird runny consistency that was a little off putting. The flavor was pretty good on it. I preferred the chipotle salsa consistency but the habanero flavor. Would go back just for the carnitas and Tinga tacos. Just don't expect home made tortillas. read more

First time trying this restaurant and am not surprised by its high rating. The food is so delicious! Everything was hot, spiced well, super fresh, not greasy, not over-salted, and reasonably priced. I got the pozole to go and when I tried it at home- wow. Very flavorful! The to-go soup container seemed to warp with the heat, though, so the top got loose. I'll have to be more careful when transporting to-go soup (because it spilled on the tortilla chips and soaked em). Parking might be a bit tough with construction nearby, but this is definitely my new lunch spot and well worth walking several blocks for. read more

I wanted to try some place new for Taco Tuesday and Alma was the right choice. My partner & I made sure not to order any of the same so we could do a sampler of what we were excited to try. Everything was fresh & delicious! The young lady who took our order was great! She brought us a generous amount of salsas to try and some tasty jalapeños as well. The establishment is clean. FIFA World Cup was on the television and vibes were pleasant. She checked in with us as we mutually agreed we'd be back to get a chorizo breakfast burrito and the Monday only Bahn Mi... hey if they offer tortas why not try the special one?! I eat here frequently. Great staff and everything from the chilaquiles to the tacos is delicious. My favorite thing to do is put my dinner order in then walk to bar 355 for a quick drink (or two) then come back and my plate is usually ready to go. Alma makes super delicious tacos that are is full of flavor. I really liked the carnitas taco and the chicken taco. Both packed with yummy spices. The birria tacos were good. The meat was tender but a bit salty. Carne asada was a bit bland. The restaurant was clean and has plenty of seating. We came around 9:30 at night and it wasn't too busy. read more

I had a very nice lunch today with my second born at this establishment. She had the carne asada plate and I had the taco salad with fish. $42 Service was friendly and the local has street parking and open space for gathering. My salad was chock full of veggies which I love!!!!!! My daughter enjoyed her entree as well. The salad was huge so half was taken Togo. Now, I didn't give five stars is because the flavor was a little lacking. Lots of natural flavors- meaning veggies and roasted veggies but a little spice and salty goodness was missed from the chips and salsa to my salad. Good tacos! Pretty big, three made for a filling lunch. Wide array of fillings, including vegetarian options. The carnitas were good and nicely fried, and oyster mushrooms were surprisingly tasty. I tried this taqueria/cantina for the first time tonight, & what will be my last time. This was the worst carnitas burrito I've ever had. The carnitas was over fried (hard & crunchy), flavorless, & too salty and the rice was burnt and crunchy. The burrito was supposed to come with cheese & sour cream. I added extra cheese, yet they didn't put hardly any. And they did not put any sour cream at all. This was the greasiest and driest burrito EVER. I wish I didn't tip for my takeout order. I wouldn't encourage anyone to go here. Def a waste of $16.20 + $2 tip. read more

Such a nice little spot! We went as a group (8) and accidentally took over the place. The seating area is definitely on the small side but we were able to make one large table, without blocking anything. The staff that was working this evening was so accommodating and friendly, they were the real ambiance of the place. The chips and guac were great - chips were deep fried right in front of us and the guac was definitely made on the spot. They had lots of drink options, including beer, margs, and most importantly, the legit glass bottle real sugar Coca Cola. Everyone seemed very happy with their food, which is always a nice treat. I recommend their tinga empanadas and carne asada platos. Overall this place made for a memorable and delicious group dinner & I'd recommend stopping in if you're ever nearby. read more

My first time stopping into Alma for a late lunch (1 pm). Being conveniently located between BART and Lake Merritt, I was surprised it was empty. Well, I understood better after getting my food. I ordered a breakfast burrito ($12) which consisted of eggs, chorizo, potatoes, sour cream, and queso. At first feel, the burrito felt very hefty and thick, with chorizo juices spewing out of the tortilla. I took my first bite, and it was a mouthful of potato. Okay, no problem, the ingredients were not mixed well. Another bite and more potatoes with a sprinkle of egg and maybe some chorizo. Midway through the burrito, it felt like I had ordered a baked potato with a side of chorizo and eggs. I'll give this place another shot and ask for no potatoes to see what happens. Maybe it'll have a little more chorizo and eggs so it actually tastes like a breakfast burrito, or maybe it'll be an empty tortilla. Fair warning: the credit card machine defaults to an 18% tip, but you can press "4" to skip. I am personally not a fan of tipflation or this practice in general. I have no issues with tipping for large to-go orders or for excellent service. My order was a single item and to-go, which I generally don't tip for a small to-go order. read more

This place just opened and definitely deserves a chance! I've walked by a few times before and noticed that they have a smaller menu, but a good mix of more expected things like burritos and tacos, with more special things like mole enchiladas, empanadas, etc. The food is delicious and super filling, prices seem reasonable esp for the quality! I also saw the next party order margaritas, which looked good too. The interior is modest and clean, and the service is friendly and professional. I called and spoke to a very welcoming woman, which encouraged me to give it a try. I went with an out-of-town friend. I had: - $14 Pork quesadilla 4 stars needs to be juicier - $5 Chicken Empanada 4 stars - $4 Chorizo taco 2.5 stars - $? Non alcoholic sangria 4.5 stars - $0 Comped. Chips and salsa 3 stars. Chips need more salt, and some chips were thick and a bit hard rather than light and crispy. Salsa needed more flavor (salt and lime), and the portion was too small. The chips and salsa were kindly comped after an order mixup. The bottom line is: - Menu font size (On the paper menu and on the digital screen) is too small and not friendly for anyone with vision issues. ADA violation? I could read the menu OK, but my friend struggled even with glasses. I had to read the menu to her! Not good. - The music was just loud enough to make it hard to have a conversation. - The air conditioning was too cold. - The food was cold and got colder in the cold room. - Food needed a sauce of some sort. The actual charge on my receipt was $21.14 When I called back and spoke with the guy who took my order - he said it was my banks fault and I need to call them. The tacos are $4 each, which can be pricey compared to other locations on Telegraph, San Pablo, or Fruitvale, but the FLAVORS are delicious -- and in my opinion, worth the extra 0.25-0.50cents. I love how this place marinates their meat and veggies, if you try the meat/veggies without added salsa or dressing, it isn't overly cooked or dry and THAT is saying something. The flavors just melt in your mouth. And the presentation of the tacos are beautiful too! As for the service they are quick (usually a 5-8 min for food after you order), and very friendly! The interior design could use some help, but given that they are new I'm sure they'll get it nicer and vibrant with art.
