Final check-in for the 6-week challenge.

I successfully completed a 6-week challenge with WillyB CrossFit Bowery, losing 7.6% body fat when the requirement was at least 6%. If I said it was easy, I'd be lying. Your diet is incredibly important. Luckily, Cavan is there to help guide you and keep you on track, day and night. Of the 3 class options (Foundations, HITT and Crossfit), crossfit was my favorite. I typically took Jeff and Mark's classes, with Mark's being the most challenging. Not because the workout was too much but because of their different teaching styles. Jeff is very kind, which I appreciate. However, Mark has a was of making you want to punch him because he's so direct and stern; yet you want to hug him because he believes in you and knows you can push harder - does that make sense?! Lol. I can hear him now "Come on, Boo!". All in all, I enjoyed my experience and give WillyB CrossFit Bowery 5 stars.

Having traveled around the country and visited dozens and dozens of CrossFit Gyms, it's always nice when you find a incredibly welcoming gym, with great equipment, and an even better coach. But even more surprising that it's in New York City. Kai was one of the best coaches I've experienced in over 10 years of CrossFit.

From outside, it may not look like much, but the door actually opens to several flights of stairs. The studio itself felt so cute and homey, with cubbies for your belongings, a coat rack, and a bathroom. I know I'm not athletic, but I really felt it here when I struggled just standing on the surfboard. The wobbling and instability was unlike any feeling ever, and will require some getting used to if you don't have good balance or hip mobility. Our instructor, Aaron, was the founder and a cool positive instructor. I loved that he took note of our names to give us shoutouts. But as soon as we started, his instructions were easier said than done, because I could not keep up for the life of me. I do wish there was slightly more personal attention or feedback throughout the class because he would constantly compliment everyone despite seeing me over there causing a ruckus. It took me the whole session to understand how the sensitive surfboard shifts according to my weight pressure. While the class was definitely not beginner friendly, even I was surprised by the improvement of everyone and myself by the end of the class. I truly think these tough exercises, if practiced frequently, will help us when surfing. This is probably the most challenging class I took so far, that it left me sore for days, but inspired to try actual surfing. If you're looking for a different type of workout class one day, check out Surfset!

I started with the Solido class which was amazing and targeted glutes and abs. It literally flew by and I was sweating! Next I tried Savage, which rotated between 4 minutes of different weight training and sculpting moves and then 4 minutes of treadmill work. Their treadmills have handy guides for athletic levels and intensity and the incline and speed are easily adjusted. I liked this class and according to my Apple Watch, burned a TON of calories here, although I do not recommend doing this class fasted as jumping back and forth and the starting and stopping from moves and sprints made me quite dizzy at times. This class was on the first floor. Finally, I tried a Tonic class, which was very weights focused and had active breaks in between the working portions. This class was on the lower level of the studio. Each class has an instructional video ahead of time and moves demoed on the screens the entire time with a timer for the moves and timers to show your progress in the class which I really appreciated. The music in every class I took was always super fun and a mix of EDM, hip hop and Latin music. They also offer a spin class I believe called Stride and a boxing class called Jab The studio itself is amazing with lots of neon lights to set the mood, plants, tons of reflective details in the locker rooms and on the lockers and gorgeous seating in the lobby. The lobby has a bar with tea, coffee, some waters and pre packaged protein drinks. I do wish they had more of a selection of pre and post workout choices but I'm sure those will come! They let me know soon they'll be offering alcohol as well and free wine if you take a class on Friday! You get a hand towel for class and if you want to use their showers, they provide towels. The bathrooms are gorgeous and have amenities provided. Some of the best studio showers I've been in with plenty of room to hang your toiletries. The staff was super polite and outgoing and everything was clean and tidy. They even have a clothing shop with unique and cute workout sets from a Latino owned brand. I can't say good things enough about this studio and hope they expand their class offerings!

There is no respect for employees, checks bounced, and the CEO gets a temper when he's hungry like a big baby. I dedicated myself and sacrificed for this job, only for them to have me unknowingly train someone (who had a husband already working there) that would soon basically replace me (without me knowing) and to stop scheduling me all together with no conversation as to why. There was no formal termination, they just stopped contacting me like a bunch of foolish kids. Months later, I went back to inquire about a CPR certificate THEY REQUIRED months before I stopped working there that they never gave me and could not even keep their story straight about why I couldn't get it (said there's invoices to be paid, while an accountant said there isn't), I was upset and told them they should do something about it since they required it. I then heard back about by behavior being unprofessional, when for months I didn't hear a peep when I kept asking about my job standing. Their behavior was disgusting and despicable, they could've had a formal convo with me but no, they just left me hanging and acted like I was the bad guy when in reality they weren't providing the bare minimum (proper communication, checks that didn't bounce, and a required certificate they made me do)! I don't even think there was a real HR there, it's also a waste of money if there's other gyms such as lifetime fitness where it's basically the same price (maybe even slightly cheaper) with wayyyyyyy much more to offer compared to a little gym that has limited equipment.

Yet, they hire staff members who are frequently rude and abrasive to select gym members. I'm not even demanding for excellent service; Just wanted enough to make its patrons feel that they are valued and respected. This negative review is pointed to one specific individual who works to maintain the cleanliness the La Palestra gym at 70 Pine Street. In the locker room, there are chairs directly facing the changing area. This invites patrons to sit on the couch, with phones in their face, directly facing members who are changing. Three separate times I have turned around, while unclothed, and seen members using phones that are pointing directly at me (including being on FaceTime). While most members would put their phone when asked, some won't, claiming that photography is not allowed, but phone usage is permitted. To be clear: A person holding a phone up in a locker room creates a reasonable fear of recording, regardless of what they claim to be doing. This is such an egregious violation of privacy, and honestly displays a lack of common sense from management. Further, it should not be the job of members to police one another; it should be the job of management to provide a safe place for changing before and after workouts. Management has so far ignored my messages about this complete lack of respect for privacy.

I visit NYC every so often for business trips, and have always struggled to find a gym I like that supports guest passes. I can happily say my search is finally over -- I'll definitely be coming back to GYM NYC every time I'm visiting the city! They sell 1-week passes for about $170, and day passes for $40. For me, it worked out better to get 4 day passes compared to the 1-week pass, but for those who would be visiting for a week and need to go 5+ sessions, that 1-week pass would be for you. Compared to EQX, the gym is way less crowded (even though it's smaller) and has all the equipment you need! The equipment is modern and plentiful: there are 2 flat bench press setups, one incline bench press, 3 deadlift platforms, and 4 squat racks. For accessory work there's also 3 adjustable flat benches and plenty of dumbbells. I usually go around 7am, which gets pretty crowded at EQX -- but this morning even by 7:30 there were still only a few other people in the gym. Amazing!
