That said, I did decide to donate this year, mainly because I really wanted the cute Arch jigsaw puzzle, and I designated my donation gift to go to the Block Museum. This place is a hidden gem. I am OBSESSED with William Blake...like, I own his entire poetry collection and two coffee table art books (one of which is from the current Block exhibit -- Age of Aquarius -- that I had to buy after visiting). The current exhibit is freaking brilliant. It's so well done, amazingly curated and organized, and is really ingenious. I admittedly don't know much about art (I'm kicking myself now for never taking an art history class during my time at NU), but I've been to The Block several times over the years working there, and I'm ashamed I never went as an undergrad. Plus, hello, it's free. Always. Super happy to support them and cannot wait for their next exhibits. In the meantime, I have a hot date with Blake at least 2-3 times more before it closes, including some of the fun special events they have planned in collaboration with other parts of the university and members of the Chicago community.

Small-town, old-school theaters like this are vanishingly rare, and this one adds a lot of value to the community. My wife and I have caught a few films here more recently, and a standup comedy show many years ago. It seems like their main shows are limited-release indie or foreign films (bless them for that). However, they also advertise a Flashback Friday feature (5pm every week) for a major discount: last month it was The Goonies for $5 and School of Rock for $2. Wow! Besides films, they continue to offer music concerts and stand-up comedy. They are also hosting a Shark Tank style event for the local high school's young entrepreneurs group; very cool. Other reviewers mentioned that this joint is run down?? I didn't see it. The theater is very comfortable and the entire facility is spotlessly clean. I'm not sure of the ticket prices, but I paid $27 for two Saturday matinees and a 16-ounce adult beverage. Yes, they have a popcorn machine and candy, plus local craft beer.

Inside, the theatre was a bit too hot and stuffy, but it got better as we got used to it...or someone else notified them! The hallway into the theatre smelled like BO, which was unforeseen, but the theatre itself did not, thankfully. The bathrooms were almost fully out of toilet paper on a busy Friday night! However, when I told the one person I saw working there later on, she was very nice and said she'd tell someone to take care of it (and that person did!). It isn't bad enough to deduct two stars, even with other minor issues, but the sound itself was kind of bad at times...this is one of the main things a theater should be aware of! Some loud sounds in the movie resulted in some of the speakers rattling annoyingly. I am surprised. Movie theatres should be able to handle loud sounds. Held the last weekend in January at Northwestern University B-Fest is a 24 hour bad movie marathon spanning 6pm Friday until 6pm Saturday and has shown some of the worst films of the 20th and 21st centuries. Such heyday gems as Kingdom of the Spiders and The Magnetic Monster all the way through psychedelic 60's bombs, 70's blacksploitation, 80's classics and even contemporary used diapers like Baby Geniuses II and Battlefield Earth have seen screentime. But that's only half the story, the real attraction is the MST3K-like audience participation that takes place as well as the crowned king of B-Movies, Plan 9 From Outer Space as the perennial midnight movie at the fest. Get your tickets early as it's sold out quicker and quicker every year. Show up with comfortable clothes, a pillow, a blanket, a stack of paper plates and enough lozenges to quell your inevitable laryngitis from yelling out every quip that occurs to you. It's simply put the most fun you can have without waking up the next morning to something awkward.

Certainly plenty of parking, this being one of many locations connected to a mall. The place seemed to be mostly clean, and there was nothing that stuck out as rough in that department. The concession people were nice enough , and generally the place seems well run. We ordered the big bite sampler , which came at a decent pace. Everything was fine, with the mozzarella being the highlight. I think I'd prefer fries overs tots, but I digress. The house brand candy was fine as well, not better or worse that leading brands. The place was a fairly on par AMC experience, though it didn't feel as lively as others. Probably won't be a frequent pick for us seeing as their are closer locations to us. But still alright.
