    Ghiblifest 2024

A perfect place to beat the heat, on a comfy recliner, in the dark. It's Ghiblifest 2024 and I've never seen Princess Mononoke before. I was pretty invested until one of the characters was voiced by Billy Bob Thornton. No line at concessions, self-serve drinks and butter, clean bathrooms, pre-ordered tickets. It's all pretty convenient, plenty of parking. The theatre was about half full. I ended up taking a nap -- oops!

We chose to watch a movie here mostly due to the discounted price (25%) for a weekend matinee. We ordered our tickets at the front counter from an actual person (gasp - no kiosks) and she completed the transaction really quickly. The theater itself could use an update (style looks very 90s). But no complaints with the seats, they reclined properly, were comfortable and clean. I also liked that there was enough space away from the person next to you. Also the stadium seating also provides no worries about what seat you choose. The theater had the a/c pretty high, so bring a hoodie if you get cold easily. Parking is easy and there is no lines in front of concession stands. So all in all would recommend if you're truly just going there for the movie - not if you're trying to go for an all out luxury experience.

    Trash near the counter.

Trash. Just a lot of trash. Popcorn up ad down the front foyer. Popcorn in the bathroom. Popcorn by the soda machine. Popcorn and napkins by the bar. Popcorn in the seats and the floor of the theatre. Disgusting. Manager's response was "Sorry we got really busy and have been doing our best to clean in between the rush". He did this while sitting with two other associates behind the counter and casually chatting and staring at their phones. To me this is negligence. If you were really sorry you would get up and make a concerted effort to take out the trash - like the kid to whom I brought this up 15 minutes earlier. He grabbed a broom and started to sweep.

It looks quite modern inside, and has more extras for guests including a bar, games etc. The biggest standout and the reason for that wording s the self serve popcorn. (Like, What??) It was an interesting experience to fill my own bucket but it was cool. The popcorn was nothing super special but it was good quality. The staff are friendly enough and I don't really have much negative to say. However, I will say that the process of getting in and having our tickets checked was a bit hectic as they have you go in the side door and wait in a single queue. We tried a pizza from their menu and it was pretty good. Would recommend. Slightly confusing for new comers but not really much to be concerned about. A nice addition to wheeling area and one I hope sticks around for awhile. [Date of Visit: 2/14/26]

When I got to the theater, the seat that I really wanted were empty. In fact, over half the theater was empty. The tickets were $18. Snacks with a drink for 2 people for $23.40. And a small glass of wine cost $10.53. Over $50 for two people to watch a movie. The only reason I gave this review any stars at all was the fact that the theater was exceptionally clean.

Yes, there is VIP experience and parking available, but the typical experience is anything but easy. On my last visit, we stayed in a nearby hotel and took a shared ride in. The challenge? Getting out. Expect a half a mile walk to the Braeside station to get a shared ride back after the concert, unless you are up for leaving before the last 30 minutes of a show. There's plenty of staff here walking around and keeping things safe but some of the staff seem cranky and short when asking them questions. Some people are first-time attendees so maybe a little more patience is needed. To me, it's just common courtesy. One man at the North Gate was very rude. I do appreciate that the sound quality is great around the venue and the big screen on the lawn is nice.

What's unique about Ravinia is you can bring in your own drinks, food, blankets & chairs. Basically you can setup picnic style anywhere in the lawn. They also have a food court, beer venders and lawn chair/table rentals, so if you want to just show up, everything you'd want can be provided. As far as getting there, I'd recommend the Metra which is included with your ticket purchases. You can get off at Ravinia Park or Braeside. There is a parking lot, but you do have to get there early to get a spot. If the main lot is full, they have shuttle service from other local locations. Grab a crew, plan a picnic and enjoy live music under the stars!

Inside, the theatre was a bit too hot and stuffy, but it got better as we got used to it...or someone else notified them! The hallway into the theatre smelled like BO, which was unforeseen, but the theatre itself did not, thankfully. The bathrooms were almost fully out of toilet paper on a busy Friday night! However, when I told the one person I saw working there later on, she was very nice and said she'd tell someone to take care of it (and that person did!). It isn't bad enough to deduct two stars, even with other minor issues, but the sound itself was kind of bad at times...this is one of the main things a theater should be aware of! Some loud sounds in the movie resulted in some of the speakers rattling annoyingly. I am surprised. Movie theatres should be able to handle loud sounds. That said, I did decide to donate this year, mainly because I really wanted the cute Arch jigsaw puzzle, and I designated my donation gift to go to the Block Museum. This place is a hidden gem. I am OBSESSED with William Blake...like, I own his entire poetry collection and two coffee table art books (one of which is from the current Block exhibit -- Age of Aquarius -- that I had to buy after visiting). The current exhibit is freaking brilliant. It's so well done, amazingly curated and organized, and is really ingenious. I admittedly don't know much about art (I'm kicking myself now for never taking an art history class during my time at NU), but I've been to The Block several times over the years working there, and I'm ashamed I never went as an undergrad. Plus, hello, it's free. Always. Super happy to support them and cannot wait for their next exhibits. In the meantime, I have a hot date with Blake at least 2-3 times more before it closes, including some of the fun special events they have planned in collaboration with other parts of the university and members of the Chicago community.
