Went for follow up the following week and could not read any better than before the surgery. He told me that he did not put a strong enough lens in. I called my Optometrist and told him how disappointed I was. He called Dr. Hawkins and Dr. Hawkins told him that he never said that to me about not putting a strong enough lens in. The Toric lenses cost me $6,000 out of pocket. My insurance would have paid for the regular lenses. My Optometrist got a hefty kick back from Dr. Hawkins for each eye that I had surgery on. The Optometrist fees were built right into the surgery payment form that had to pre sign. Dr. Hawkins never offered to correct the lens he put in and never offered some compensation for his mistake. In my opinion it's all about money. They rush you in and out at break neck speed. It's like an assembly line. It's unfortunate that you have to pay in full before the surgery instead of after. Because if you are not happy with the job they do, they don't seem to care.

He said he preferred to do manual incisions versus using the laser because Medicare didn't cover the laser. Found out that's not true. Also learned the doctor who referred me gets a kick back for referring me to Dr. Hawkins, which made me think did my Optometrist recommend the best for me, or for his own pocket? I decided to go with the second doctor, who told me using the laser is more precise and eliminates human error. I'm sure he's good at what he does, but I didn't feel comfortable with the kick back and untruth.

DR. KAREN WOOD & ANGELA GO THE EXTRA MILE!!…read more I've been living in the Southport, North Carolina, Brunswick County area for over 2 years now. Finding a local doctor who can accommodate you during crisis as well as an excellent diagnostician is a hard find to begin with. Lucky for me a family member highly recommended Dr. Karen Wood. Dr. Wood welcomed me into her practice and her nurse Angela is always so welcoming, funny, such a pleasure to be around and thorough. Together, along with the rest of the medical and office staff, Melissa, Karin, Monica, Kristina and Dee, this team is second to none. An example of their, "Above and beyond" approach is when I needed support locally to participate in a clinical trial for the prevention of cancer reoccurrence. I would have to fly to St. Louis from NC every month for 3 months. I needed to be checked 15 days after the vaccine was administered and couldn't fly back for that. I also wanted to avoid driving to Duke Medial (7 hrs round trip) were my Oncologist is. The clinical trial Director approved Dr. Wood to oversee the exams in between visits. Angela, Dr. Wood's nurse jumped through hoops getting all the necessary paperwork processed. When something didn't show up, she was on it. I can't thank her enough for all that she did for me. Also, a special thanks and loads of gratitude to Dr. Wood for agreeing to all this and always having my back. I highly recommend Dr. Wood and her Family Medical Center. The staff are friendly and always welcoming. And no one beats my Angela!!!
