Recently, I went to The Eye Center, 3500 Oleander Drive, Wilmington, NC, for a standard eye exam/contact fitting. The message on my voice mail confirming the appointment stated that my portion would be $39. Upon arrival, my out of pocket was increased to $59. When the exam was finished, I was required to pay $185. I was advised that Dr. Wallent decided that I needed a medical exam which was not covered by my Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance. I have never had a medical problem with my eyes nor was I advised that the fee would increase dramatically. Back in Ohio where I am from looking at the health of the eyes was a standard part of the eye exam which was covered in full by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Ohio. During my time as Director of Investigations for the Summit County Prosecutors Office in Ohio, we worked on insurance fraud cases regularly, so I am familiar with the form and structure of how they work. This particular type of overcharge is a classic example of "Bait and Switch". A truly insidious example of ripping off the consumer. My plans are to file complaints with Medicare, Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC, and the The North Carolina State Board of Examiners in Optometry. I look forward to these various agencies looking closely at the billing practices of The Eye Center where they may find thousands of cases of over billing, insurance fraud and Criminal Theft by Deception. I would not recommend The Eye Center under any circumstances. This review will also be posted on Google and Yelp. read more

This was my first appointment at The Eye Center in Wilmington. Dr. Thomas Walent handled my exam with incredible professionalism. I'm a contact lense user and, with his expertise, Dr. Walent changed my existing prescription which now allows me to read distant road signs with sharper clarity. Kudos to the entire staff who treated my visit with efficency & professionalism. I left with samples of my new prescription with the knowledge of knowing if I wasn't satisfied, I could easily come back. Now, that's customer satisfaction. Husband was charged $140. for contact lens fitting....previously wore them, told the person the brand and they gave him to sets of lenses, told him to let them know which was most comfortable and that was it.....and that cost 140.00..WTH? Also was charged $35.00 for imaging of his eyes....he never consented to that...I questioned the charge...I asked to see where he signed for it...well....there is NO documentation that he signed...he was never handed the IPAD....now I have to wait for a check to be sent to me for a service that was never rendered...I wonder how many others have paid this without consent. First time patient at the Eye Center. I was very impressed with the staff and doctor at the Eye Center. This morning started with the front office person being late because of traffic on the bridge. Her coworker stepped in to cover the front desk until she got there. That's the first great thing... these people care about each other in service to their patients? Secondly, the technician was friendly, informative, efficient, and made me feel comfortable with everything that was happening... Just a routine exam. I really appreciate her patience with my questions. The doctor was also extremely friendly, informative and expressed the care that he intended to provide me as his patient. I can see that the culture of this office is set by this caring, medical professional. And finally, upon checking out, they provided detailed information about the charges for the services I receive that day. I would highly recommend the Eye Center. read more

This is the FIRST time I have ever walked out of an appointment feeling thoroughly satisfied and impressed and I have seen many different eye doctors! Hence the review. I am new to the area and was having problems with my eye. I have had glasses for 20 plus years and am no stranger to a bad experience. They had a great review and I took a chance! It did not disappoint. They were polite and professional at the reception desk. They have updated technology and a clean environment. The Dr. stopped and listened to what I have to say.
