We stopped in here on a Sunday, on the way home from Hampton Roads. It's a no frills restaurant that seems to be frequented by locals. We seated ourselves and waited to be acknowledged. Once the server came she was very nice and kept checking on us. Service is a bit slow, it took a while for our food to come. The complimentary hushpuppies and bread were the best thing I ate. I ordered the grilled blackened salmon with cabbage and mashed potatoes with gravy. The entire meal was BLAND!! Everything on my plate lacked flavor. My husband ordered ribs, collards and Mac n cheese. The ribs were OK, the membrane on the back needed to be removed. The Mac n cheese was decent. I used to go to Wilson's all the time as a child and now as an adult I stopped going until recently. I ordered online today and didn't receive what I had asked. At first, they didn't know where my order was then I find out they had no Mac and Cheese or Collards and this was before 12:30 pm. If I could give any lower rating I would. Breakfast was the worst I have ever had anywhere. The omelette sausage looked left over from whenever and was served with nothing.... No toast, home fries nothing . All at a bargain price of $14 I believe and of course drinks were extra. The breakfast plate of eggs over medium came rock hard, the 2 strips of bacon were served in a small bowl for they had shriveled to nothing and the home fries were basically thinly sliced potatoes dropped in the deep fryer. Prior to visiting Wilson's, we were warned that the food quality was not what it used to be... But since I have no experience to compare it with, I must say it was DELICIOUS! I had the fried oysters and shrimp while my friend had a bbq plate, and both of us had the fries and coleslaw with fresh, hot, delicious hush puppies. My seafood was perfect, and everything tasted wonderful and was served at the ideal temperature. Went this evening to try their oysters and shrimp. Both were very good. The salad was good as well. The hush puppies were excellent as were the onion rings. I do not recommend the oyster stew - very bland, tasted like warm milk. . Sadly the service was very poor. We waited an hour for our meal, when it did come it pretty much arrived all at one time. Minus a part that we never did receive. The salads, hush puppies and stew could have easily been delivered early but they weren't. Arrived on a Saturday night with a large hungry party after a camping trip. One of the specials was a sampler which included fried chicken, chopped barbecue pork, and ribs with two sides. The chopped pork was great. South HIll is very close to NC so I'd put it in the NC style rather than the tidewater/Richmond Virginia style. The house sauce was mustard based which was a nice surprise. If I were to describe it, I'd say it's a western NC style with mustard. Very different from the SC style mustard-based sauce. I liked it so much I purchased a bottle on my way out. Fried chicken was served hot, fresh, and was delicious. The ribs were pretty good as well but, to be honest, by the time I got to them, I was stuffed. Our waitress was great. Super nice and very patient with our large party. She handled all the challenges with a small and classic hospitality. I really liked this place and will definitely go back. read more

I stopped there today for lunch, while driving through, and it was one of the best lunches I have ever had while on the road. I got the meatloaf, and it was enough to feed 3 people. Holy hella, was this place good! I did the sliced BBQ lunch combo with applesauce and corn on the cob, and I was happily licking my chops after, wishing I had more of the sauce to guzzle. It seems to be the style in this part of the world to do a BBQ sauce that is part vinegar and part tomato, and I'm really starting to like it. It was a Saturday around lunchtime but it took us over 20 minutes to get our water, the barbecue sampler plate was very little for a premium price. In the area for work. Stopped in. Extremely busy so it has to be good. Right? Sign said wait to seated. About 10 customers and parties waiting in line to pay. You can see right into servers area/kitchen. Many wait staff. Who mostly likely have been workings since grand opening. Decor also appears to be original. Because the staff appeared to be working as efficiently as their bodies allow. The first 10 minutes waiting to be sat. And ignored when we tried to ask if we should seat ourselves. We stood patiently. The line to check out only getting longer. A large party squeezed through us at the sign and those waiting to pay. We too sat ourselves. 10 more minutes passed. One of the staff now trying to cash out customers. It was obvious that we may never receive acknowledgement. The entire back area of tables. No one appeared irritated. Yet not a table had a drinks. Some table with menus. Most just sitting. No waiter or server to come past the half wall down the center of dining area. Tables in the front have drinks, food. Empty plates. The cash line still not shorting. For every one cashed out. One would get in line to pay. It has to be delicious. These people just sit quite with their parties. Maybe they serve in two dinner setting? Maybe the waitress responsible for the back area is the lady cashing out the long line of those still trying to pay. I 30 minutes now sitting at the table. Many tables empty still slowly start to fill up. 10 at the door. And still no one has a drink. Times up. Laughter set in. Now I understand why it appears so busy. People starved to death waiting for serve. This is why they are all quite and patient. Their dead. Really just do not see how this place stays in business. I will never go again. The best description; 'Old School'. I don't mean that in a bad way. I got there at the transition from breakfast to lunch. I think I was the first lunch customer since I had to ask for the lunch menu. That waitress never came back and finally another lady came to bring me a menu and take my order. I ordered a large minced BBQ sandwich with slaw. A lunch standard since I was a child growing up in this area. The sandwich came quickly and was everything I expected, but not quite as smoky as it could have been. I added some spicy sauce, and I was back to my childhood. The food is inexpensive and good. The style of BBQ is very different than other areas of the country. It is not pulled pork with sweet, sticky sauce. That is not the tradition in this area. BBQ is minced or sliced and you put the sauce on it. The heaviness of the hickory smoke varies from restaurant to restaurant. The sauce is vinegar based, peppery and thin. The further north and west you go in Virginia, the more tomato you will find in the sauce. This is more like NC sauce. I dropped the rating a little because the restaurant could definitely use a good cleaning and some paint. The service is pretty slow, but that is kind of the lifestyle in south central VA. read more
