Stopped here in the middle of a road trip with my niece. This small quaint restaurant was packed with hospitality. As we arrived, we were seated, served our requested beverages and we're given the specials. I ordered the chicken pot pie that was on special, and my niece got the brisket burger and a side of fries (they come separate) The waitress said they were known for their brisket so that was a selling point. She also noted that they have a fry guy dedicated to prepping fresh cut fries to order. The fries were worth the hype, fresh crispy and paired wonderfully with some classic ketchup. The brisket burger was good, with a sweet BBQ sauce, it was just a bit shy from being too sweet so if you like a sweet BBQ I'd recommend this burger. For the chicken pot pie, the crust was delicious, soft and fluffy but I was not a fan of the filling which tasted tangy and didn't have much chicken inside. I later mentioned that it would be good if they put brisket and veggies in the pie crust for a different dish or like a pot roast situation. The waitress said she liked my idea and would pass it along. For dessert specials they had key lime, coconut cream and peanut butter pie. I wouldn't normally order or care to eat a coconut cream pie, but the waitress noted it as her favorite and I had a good feeling about it. The pie was indeed delicious. I loved the graham cracker crust which you could tell was homemade, the firm base with the fluffy cream top adorned with toasted coconut it was delightful. My niece is not a coconut person and said she enjoyed it as well. Overall, this a was a kind charming place to stop by on our road trip. I'm very shocked at the negative experience I had here. It appears to be highly rated and the establishment itself looks like it has recently been renovated - or very well taken care of. I ordered one of the burgers on the menu (can't remember exactly which) and it was clearly a frozen patty. Tasted extremely salty, was overcooked and tough. The fries were also frozen and not fresh. If I hadn't been very hungry I would not have finished the meal, which means a lot coming from me. The buns I will say seemed as if they were handmade, very fresh and delicious. The service left a bit to be desired. It felt like our waitress hadn't spent a lot of time socializing. Interactions felt awkward and forced. I would avoid this spot, although there isn't much else around. If you're passing by on a road trip, keep driving. read more

Chef went out of his way today for us ! The Hungry Farmer is the Place To Eat just off I 85 - halfway from Petersburg Va to Raleigh NC in what has been called " a food desert ". I'm so glad that I brought my family to eat here. We got the fried green beans and nachos for the appetizer. Enjoyed the green beans a lot, nachos were okay. I really enjoyed my order of fish and chips, and the garlic bread that came with it was delicious. Our waitress was also so attentive and kind. Stopped in here headed to Virginia. Very small restaurant, the restrooms are outside. Older building redone but still has uneven floors, etc. The food was just ok, we felt like it was overpriced for the quality and quantity we received. The Hungry Farmer was the perfect stop on our way passing through town. The food, service, and homey feel was everything we could've hoped for and more. The catfish dinner was delicious with a hefty filet that was fried to perfection. The baked beans and mac n' cheese were comforting and hit the spot. Even though we were all STUFFED, we couldn't pass up ordering a slice each of the key lime, peanut butter, and coconut cream pies to share between us. Y'all.. do NOT skip these pies. They are too delicious to miss. I seriously debated taking up the owner on his offer to roll me to the car in their wheelbarrow afterwards.. but they were worth every bite! The menu is all family recipes that are made with as much love as you would get at grandma's table. The owner and our server (I hate that I can't recall their names) truly made us feel right at home. we were seated by a waitress with no communication. She asked for our drink order and we said 2 unsweetened ice teas we got 2 sweet ice teas. We asked about what we would like to order she said we no longer have that and we need to get new menus printed. We then ordered from the board posted outside and she stated we don't have that and I stated it is posted on the board outside. She walked away. Then when our dinners came one was half cooked. We had to keep our drinks covered because of all of the flies. The worst $50 spent for a so called dinner. We had to go home and cook dinner. We will not return. Very disappointed. read more

Im from out of town, met family there at 10:30. Total of 8 of us, sat outside. Friendly, professional service with a small town feel. The meat lover's omelette was great. Seemed like homemade sausage was used . THE HOME FRIES ARE A MUST. If you like crispy, seasoned home fries, you must eat them here. Triple-cooked, seasoned well, amazing. Cheap, quick, great service and even better food? What more could you ask for? My friends and I stopped at the hungry farmer on our way through VA into NC and we were hankering for some down south hospitality and diner food for breakfast. The hungry farmer did not disappoint. They had a breakfast special of biscuits and gravy, served with eggs and the crispiest home fries I have ever tasted. It was phenomenal. I ordered the Spanish omelette which was full of veggies and cheese and topped with salsa, as well as a side of bacon. Everything was cooked to perfection. The coffee flowed freely and the faces were friendly, and the interior decor is cute and homey. The portions were great but I didn't feel stuffed. The staff was even so kind as to refill our reusable water bottles before we hit the road. The prices were more than reasonable, with most plates running under $10. I only hope I get the chance to pass through South Hill again to try more of the menu! read more

Stopped by on the way to DC from NC, as we originally planned to stop at Horseshoe but they were randomly closed for whatever reason. Reviews suggested this was a solid plan B, but unfortunately that was not the case. Friendly enough service, albeit slow and inattentive at times coupled with a longer than average wait for food even though place was only half full during lunchtime on a Friday. Also, surprisingly small portions for the higher than average price points. Food was ok, but nothing special. Actually disappointed given how much we paid for the meal. Will look for a different option on the way back to NC as The Hungry Farmer did nothing but left us hungry when all was said and done. read more

I'm very picky and looked at the reviews because me and the family were traveling from VA and I'm glad we decided to do so. The place is very clean and that's what I look at first. There was a couple finishing their food when we entered. I had a loaded hotdog and my children had cheeseburgers. The food AND the service was top notch. The fries are hand cut and seasoned perfectly. We WILL be returning. PS... I don't know what's up with the negative reviews this place is a down home gem. read more

We stopped here for our last meal in town, a brunch time eat where we were initially disappointed we'd missed their breakfast service. We persevered and made our orders. Our food was served quickly -- mine, a burger with no bun -- and my boyfriend's, a pulled pork sandwich with fries. It was hot, fresh, and delicious, actually reminding me of a homemade burger. The place was empty (not sure why), and we had the kind attention of the people whom I assume were the owners. We ended the meal with a delicious slice of peanut butter pie. It was heavenly, simultaneously light and rich in flavor. Oddly, we sternly warned against dining at this restaurant by our hotel concierge. I'm glad we decided to try it anyway. We had the chicken mashed potato bowl and the pulled pork sandwich for our lunch. The meal was decent and the prices were great. I'm pretty bummed out with their coffee though. It was pure water with a hint of brown color. I truly believe it was day-old. I asked her to brew another pot stronger and she came back with one cup of coffee in less than 2 minutes. It was worse than the 1st cup. I know what the owner did because my sister being a cheapskate does the same thing. She re-uses the coffee and the filter. Difference is my sister only does it for herself not customers or company. That is why she's only getting two stars if she's willing to reuse coffee what else are they willing to re-use. An hour early for an appointment otherwise I would never have stopped. A fantastic surprise hole in the walll restaurant . Stopped for a coffee stayed for a breakfast that Waac just about as good as my mom's back on the farm. The eggs were cooked tto perfection but the sausage was a reminder of my childhood. And coffee as black and rich as my soul. This is a must anytime I am in the area. I will add this is not fast paced so relax and enjoy. read more

The rib eye steak was very tasty, cooked perfectly, and I appreciated that the green beans still had some snap to them! :) My boyfriend's French fries were out-of-this-world! Just went for breakfast and it was really good! One of my pet peeves is to go into a place like this and see dust on the wall decorations and here everything looked clean and tidy.
