ENTERING... The nostalgia starts as you begin walking up the creaky wooden stairs to the second floor which opens up to a small lobby and concession stand with a screening room to your left and a larger theatre to your right. The two screens generally start their showings at the same time, so a line may accumulate if it's a busy weekend evening. You'll be asked to purchase your ticket in one line to the left and then your concessions in another line to the right, which may be confusing at first since it's all behind the same counter. With adult tickets for $6 and the most expensive concession at $4(?) - you can have a great date night for $20- just make sure to bring your cash, or else you'll be heading back across the street to the ATM. If you have someone with you- one of you should head into the theatre to grab a good seat while the other waits in line- because it can get crowded quickly. CONCESSIONS... This is one of the reasons I drive out of my way to see a movie at the Wilton. The real pink lemonade with lemons and cranberry juice and the melt-in-your-mouth real buttered popcorn make me wish they would just open up a lemonade and popcorn stand that I could visit whenever I have the craving. Here's how you KNOW it's real butter- unlike oil which just slides over popcorn- real butter actually melts the popcorn as it goes in hot. They also have coffee, tea, some ice cream bars and a pretty decent selection of canned sodas and candy. SCREENS... Unlike typical cinemas where the front row of seats is far too close to be comfortable to view a movie- you can actually sit in the front row at either screen and still enjoy the experience. I actually prefer the movie experience slightly more in the smaller screening room. The seats are more comfortable than the larger room's seats, they are all aligned right in front of the screen, plus the seats have a little tray which pulls up in front of you like an old school desk to rest your snacks on. The larger room has an aisle down the center and both sides- which makes getting in or out during the movie easier (in case you have someone with you who might need a mid-movie exit.) Occasionally the larger room will show a short black & white film instead of previews before the movie begins- which makes you feel like you've really stepped back in time- especially when the large red curtain opens and closes between shows. My recommendation for the larger theatre is to sit closer rather than further - the screen is fairly small for the size of the room and even though it's elevated, the experience is better with less distractions in front of you. Both rooms are air-conditioned in the summer with window units, and occasionally have oscillating fans to help circulate the air. This is only a mild noise distraction at first and often is forgotten as soon as the surround sound kicks in. LOVE... More than anything, you get the sense that everyone here cares about a great movie experience- and that's what makes Wilton a five star experience. It shows interesting movies- some independent and some that might appear in larger theatres for a short run, but often meaningful and carefully selected. It's not the most modern or luxurious theatre- but what it does have- is lots of love. read more

I became a fan of the place when I lived in NH for many years, and I still make the trek from Boston just for the experience. They have good taste in the movies they choose to show -- some indie films. They guy who runs the place has a real passion for it and it shows. It's like a little piece of Boston in NH, but the place is a total time warp and has that remote New England town feel. Movies are like $5 or $6 and you can have coffee. Seriously, there's no place like it and it's totally cool. There are two screens and the theatre with the larger screen has massive legroom, wooden floors, and the curtain actually opens and closes for the film...where can you get that?! read more

I love this town hall theatre. I grew up a town away, and quite often preferred coming here over the nearest chain movie theatre. It's cheaper and the lines are shorter... Plus, it's in the old town hall! There is a full-size screen (looks more like an auditorium with movie seats!) and a much smaller "screening room". The concession stand is small but has everything you could need, at about half the price. They get some really interesting indie films, too. read more

Movie watching the way it's supposed to be, that's the Wilton Town Hall Theatre. Yes it's economical and the snacks are all as fresh and authentically yummy as you would want, but it's the theater experience that will keep you going back. I feared that the screen would be too washed out or lack clarity. I feared that the sound would be muddled. Neither was the case. While you might not want to see the biggest block-buster action movie there, although you might as well, the movie presentation in the main theater is as visually and audibly clear as any other theater, more so than some multiplex boxes, too. The second "boutique" screen, is just engaging. The seating is far more cramped, but you'll not have a more intimate movie experience. You'll want to come early. You'll want to stay late. You'll want to eat at C & S (across the street) and enjoy walking around Wilton. You'll want to make the Town Hall Theater the only place you see movies. read more

We drove to the Wilton Town Hall Theatre to see The Tree of Life on a midweek date night and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. First things first is the cost of moviegoing. Two tickets to the film were $12 total, cheaper than a matinee at any mainstream theatre. Because I bought the tix, BF bought the concessions--a Pepsi, a small lemonade, and a large popcorn--and, expecting to pay big bucks, pulled out a $20 in anticipation. Imagine his shock when the young man asked for $5. $5 for all of what we bought?! We couldn't believe that our evening was $17. The two of us couldn't get in the door at Showcase Cinemas for that little. We entered the theatre and took our seats for the film to begin. Unfortunately, I sat too close to the air conditioning unit; the noise didn't bother me, but I was freezing during the last 45 minutes of the film. I learned my lesson for the next time we go to Wilton. The film itself was on a reel, which was so nice to see after so many digital prints at other theatres. As film-buff BF said on the way home, "That is how film is meant to be seen!" One aspect that bears mention: I've already noted the air conditioning unit. The theatres also have oscillating fans to circulate the air in the old building. This is great but also adds to the noise. Not an issue for me or, I'm sure, for most films. However, if you've seen The Tree of Life, you know that all of the voiceovers are in a whisper. There was one elderly gentleman in front of us who clearly could not hear what was being said and continually asked his companion, "What did they say?" It didn't bother me because I was pretty engrossed in the film, but I felt bad for the man and his companion. Perhaps the theatre staff could make allowances for movies like ToL (if there are any other movies like it!) and eliminate the fans for those showings. I highly recommend and will certainly be back--for both new movies and Sunday silent films! read more

Reminds me of watching indie movies in rural VT theaters - like the Wilton Town Hall Theatre, they were usually converted old buildings. This place has a great vibe and is definitely worth the trip. Easily my favorite movie theater in NH. So old fashioned and small, but still running film! Denis is the best, and if you want he's usually up for talking movies. Prices are excellent (active military free btw), and the concessions are priced fairly as well. The really beautiful thing about the Wilton is the atmosphere. If I were a movie theatre, this would be me. This place has it all! Beautiful building Good Acoustics Classic Decor TONS of seltzer (they even have Banana flavor!) A wonderfully petite and beautiful theatre with an array of films to suit everyone's needs. I love that they show Independent Films as well as the Blockbuster's. There's something for everyone! I am a huge fan of everything about this theater. The movies are independent and interesting, the prices are great, the service is super personal and friendly, and the proprietor gives back, A LOT, to his community. Rarely are 1st run movies screened here, but one occasion sticks in my mind: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone was opening and the line stretched for miles. Not only did the owner regale the young audience, including my kids, with several 3 Stooges shorts, he also served them "Pumpkin Juice" and "Butterbeer". Totally charming, wonderful place. This place is amazing. The building is beautiful, the owner and staff are friendly and polite, the prices are very reasonable ($7 for adults, $5 for seniors), the theater and restrooms are always very clean, and the popcorn is incredible. You can get a ticket and all the snacks you need for less than $10 total. Their snack selection contains various sodas, seltzers, candy and coffee but I rarely stray from the popcorn and homemade lemonade (it's fantastic). This a great place to see a movie, whether its a independent film, one that is at your chain theaters, or even a silent film on Sunday. Do not miss their showing of "It's a Wonderful Life" at Christmastime; admission is free with the donation of a canned good and the place fills up fast. When I went in 2011 there were teenagers playing Christmas carols while we waited for the show to start and a gentleman spoke about the agency that was to benefit from the donations received and how much he and the owner of the theater appreciated everyone's generosity. The owner and those associated with the theater seem to care just as much about the patrons and their experiences as they do about the movies they show, which is delightful and refreshing. A few tips if you are attending with older people: 1. The stairs at the Main Street entrance may be difficult for the elderly or anyone who requires assistance getting around. The back entrance (which puts you right next to the ticket counter) may be more suitable. I believe it is on Maple Street. 2. The theater is by no means uncomfortable but it doesn't hurt to bring a sweater or coat into the theater (especially during the wintertime) if you are very sensitive to temperature or are cold all of the time (like some of my friends). read more

I need to start coming here way more often. Great arthouse theater out in a NH mill town. It will cost you $7 to get in, and you can buy popcorn and a can of soda for less than $5. Plus they sell all kinds of Klondike Bars and candy, all for cheap. I last went on New Year's Eve, and the same guy was selling tickets and the concessions. Plus, they play indie arthouse movies I usually have to drive into Boston and pay $13 to see. I wish it was a little closer to my house, but that's hardly their fault. read more
