This little hardware store has been on Irving St for many years. It's small, packed with stuff that you may or may not need, and chances are, if you walked in here looking for something specific, they'll carry it. About 15 yrs ago when I did some updates to a couple of homes, I made countless trips here. They are a life-saver, and coming here for a few screws or nails beats driving out to Home Depot. The staff always seem to know exactly where things are located and are helpful. I've been back here recently for random supplies for other home updates, and things haven't changed. They still carry just about everything, the staff still knows where things are and it's still a convenient little neighborhood hardware store. Wow. Mister Sourpuss had his grumpy pants on today! I came in for a couple key copies, and I asked for a bronze or other color than silver. The key to my apartment building gate is pretty much the same as my front door; It gets confusing. "No, only silver." Why? I ask. He proceeds to give the dirtiest, most impatient look I've seen in a long time. "Because that's all we have." A wall full of keys but that's all you have. I realize I'm burying this point, but I realize the rationale is the key copy requires a certain thickness and length, and they probably only have that thickness and length in silver. (It's thicc in'it.) But that doesn't excuse the 'tude. You could've offered some sticker to put on the new key or a separate key ring, which I did end up buying. I've come to this place a lot, especially for my contact cement and sponge brushes when I make disco helmets. Also for replacement bulbs. They have a nice selection, and the guy helping me today is usually in a better mood. The pandemic sucks for all of us. Very sorry if your business is suffering, please try not to take it out on me next time. Oh the keys work and seemed about $4 a pop! I live in the area and like to support small businesses but after today, no more. Came in for some screws or washers to put up a tv. The older male that was working the counter in the afternoon today was downright disgustingly RUDE. Because of him, won't be going back and will simply go up Irving to the local hardware store or simply drive to Home Depot. Will share with neighbors. If you shut down in the future, it's bc of the bad service. Dishonest actually. Advertised above the washers - 0.17 each. Bought 52. The guy says it's 0.22 each. I don't have time to argue that it's 2.60 more and needed the project done. It's about the principle of being an honest business. Asked him why .22 when advertised for .17, he says RUDELY "price went up". I tell him to change the sticker for the future. He didn't give s***. I normally support small business and after having some bumps with this local business in my neighborhood I still gave it a shot to buy from them again. and I regret it. When I bought the 2 items he told me they can be returned for unopened however; DISHONEST people are out there and today I wasn't able to return it so now I have $30 worth of product that were unused and untouched. Being outright dishonest with your customers is the absolute worst thing a small business can do. I won't be returning here again and I don't advise you shop here to avoid grumpy and rude people that like to scam younger folks. My mom went to this place earlier today to get a simple key made and she was treated so poorly she was in tears afterwards. She is extremely diligent during this pandemic so she wears a mask as well as a shield when out in public. Not sure if that made them uncomfortable or something? I'm not sure if that played any part but the man she encountered there yelled at her the whole time and threw down the key. She asked if she had done anything or if he was mad and why was he yelling and he said something about either her mask or his mask. The key he made looked totally different from the one she had copied and then he withheld it from her. She told him that he shouldn't treat customers like this. And you could tell he just started laughing and grinning at her. My mother used to own a restaurant and customers kept coming back for her. She got tired and now she's a waitress and pre-COVID-19 people would seriously wait for one of her tables (even if other sections had empty tables) to open up so she could wait on them. She knows what good customer service should be. I hope no one else experiences the same service my mother did. It takes an awful lot to make her cry and I'm pissed that this place made her feel so terrible. They should be ashamed of themselves. read more

What a treasure this place is! A genuine old-world family-owned hardware store. The window latches in my house were solid rust because they were a hundred years old. After calling all the big box home centers in the area I was unable to find anyone who carried replacements. On a whim I went to Win-Long True Value and they had exact replacements that were brand new still in the original manufacturers box! And to top it all off, the price was less than 1/4 the price I was able to find for similar items on Amazon.com or eBay. With the past trend of unique shops such as the fabric store disappearing from Irving Street in San Francisco, I fear the day that this place has to close because of the crippling expenses that the city of San Francisco incurs on small businesses. read more

No frills neighborhood hardware/household store. You can find little to large knickknacks here. I usually just get keys made here which is cheaper than Coles and I'm assuming other places too. The service is quick for keys and the lady that works there in the mornings is nice but also no BS. They sell things I would buy off Amazon: clothing each, plunger, different locks, small household kitchen items.. for about the same price. It feels right supporting a local business when it comes to these goods rather than buying it online and waiting 2 days. read more

I'm glad I saw this place on Yelp. It's closer, a lot more personable than Home Depot, and I found my flush lever, at $3.79 it was a cheap fix. I'm happy I was able to easily fix it myself instead of asking my landlord to come all the way out from Sebastapol. The woman at this store is whacko!! My friend and I went to get a key made and to pick up a few items. We received a call from my friend's brother just as the woman turned on the machine that he no longer needs the key made. The lady told me it's too late even though we knew she hasn't begun sawing the new key. I was disappointed in her integrity and after we paid the lady I told my friend I wanted to pick up the other items else where. That lady came out onto the street to yell at us. She yelled at us and called us names and I know for sure she said, "GARBAGE". My friend and I found that to be ironic as that's what we call stores like hers... selling a bunch of junk and garbage that nobody needs. Overall, it was a horrible experience and although I feel sorry for this lady's husband, I don't feel sorry for her as she is sneaky and CREEPY. Ugh. read more

1 star for the convenience of the store.. being local and such. 1 star for the staffers for knowing their products and where they could be found. I had to replace a weird CFL light bulb that came from my bathroom light fixture. I walked in with the sample, and the gentlemen showed me where the bulbs were. I asked what the price was since I couldn't find it.. he found it and said $20. WHAT?! For a light-bulb? I needed 2, and wasn't about to drop $40 hard-earned dollars on light bulbs. So I check on-line for the bulbs.. Amazon sold them for $9.95 and then I went to Home Depot. The bulbs were only $6.47 at Home Depot. Wow. I bought them without hesitating at all. If you HAVE to go here then by all means do what you have to do. But if you can wait, and would want to save some money.. in my case $27, then wait and go to Home Depot. read more

Not everyone duplicates specialty car keys, they do here and at about 2/3 the cost compare to others who cuts specialty car keys. Their price is really fair for rekeying locks too and they can do on-site for you bring in your lock. My best friend use to run this shop and glad when he passed away, his wife and brother-in-law has successfully continued the business. I know that my friend is proud of their continued dedication to the hardware business. I like window shopping when I stopby to visit... they've got so much stuff everywhere! read more

Extraordinarily useful hardware shop. They have a great selection of products and while the store appears small from the outside, it goes back in quite far. I stopped by here when a friend of mine's car got rear ended so hard the trunk got knocked out of alignment and would not close. They helped us pick out something a bit stronger than duct tape to keep it sealed on the way home and recommended a less expensive option than the one we initially picked. Prices were fair and they take cards. If I lived in the area, I would come here all the time. read more

I'm not a big Yelper, but sometimes something needs to be said. I've spent quite a bit of money at this store over the years, and am no stranger to hardware stores. Although it's a small place, they've mostly had what I needed for a variety of projects. As neighborhood hardware stores go, the stock is pretty typical, so no complaints there. The proprietor, however, is less than pleasant, to put it mildly. First the good: There is a woman who works there who is absolutely wonderful. Like any hardware store, the shelves are full of lots of miscellaneous items, and sometimes they don't fall neatly into 'tools', 'electrical', 'plumbing', etc. For those items, a little customer service is helpful. When I've asked her where something is located, she'll tell me which aisle, and roughly where it is, like 'halfway down on your left on the bottom shelf', which is all I need. 'Awesome, thank you!'. Quite often, she'll even escort me to the location. The extra mile is much appreciated, but certainly not expected. Transactions are friendly, funny, and neighborly. She's the first to say hello when I enter the store, because that matters to her. I leave on a high note, which brings me back. She is the gem at this place. Now the bad: The 'gentleman', if you can call him that, has trouble enough greeting a customer. No big deal, I don't need the affirmation, but I initiate with a greeting, like I typically do in any business. I'm an aisle wanderer, and look for things myself before asking for help. I don't view the people staffing a business as my servants. I've worked retail. But sometimes you just gotta ask for assistance. 'Over there' is the response this guy gives, pointing vaguely at the aisles. Uh... everything is 'over there', since the counter is at the door. It sucks, but there are serious problems in the world, and that's not one of them. Meanwhile, two elderly women come in and ask where they can find what they're after. 'It's on the shelves. Look for it!' he barks at them. It's a wonder the guy is still in business. I ring up, and express my annoyance, 'Thank you for the pleasant customer service'. 'You don't like it?!', 'All I'm looking is for a general location'. 'I'm busy!', he barks. Uh, no, with both the elderly women and me, he was leaning back on the counter with nobody waiting, doing nothing. I suggest he ought to work on his customer service, as it's good for his business, after all. He talks over me the whole time, then ends the conversation by calling me 'white boy'. Oooookaaaaay... Now, I'm a progressive person, and I know tensions are especially high right now. I'm on the right side of history, and it's not with the cretins who think of themselves as 'supreme'. I've had many great experiences with my neighbors in the Sunset, and have many close relationships with Asian friends, lovers, bosses, you name it. Bad customer service is one thing, but racism is not acceptable. By the way, the two older women were also white. I sense a pattern. Side note: As the pandemic was accelerating, I stopped in for some things. I was the only customer in the place, and I asked him how business was; if he was affected at all. His response was to tell me how toilet paper was a big money maker for a savvy businessman. He was practically salivating. Yep. That's the kind of person this guy is. After years of shopping there, no more. In this predominantly Asian neighborhood, I would love to see another Asian owned hardware store open up. While this store is the most convenient for me to shop at, my hardware dollars will be spent elsewhere, where people are part of the solution, and not the problem. read more

They have seemingly anything you could think of for things around the house, and the employees know exactly where everything is despite the sheer volume of products that line the shelves. Also had 12 keys made in a matter of minutes, and the prices for everything are fair, sometimes cheaper than I expected. Glad they are down the street - going to visit them all the time. read more

My girlfriend bought me a phone charger for my Samsung Galaxy and when I opened up the package I realized she bought the wrong one. She was nice enough to offer to exchange it for the correct one (micro USB). My girlfriend went in with the receipt in hand and she tried to exchange it and the man there said no. He mentioned to her the only way he would consider it is if I came to the store and showed him my phone and proved that the charger plug didn't fit the phone. He said that he doesn't know if she was just trying to take advantage of him because some people buy a charger, use it for a day and returrn it(who does this???). I literally couldn't believe how unreasonable he was to her. He didn't leave us much of a choice so I went into the store with the receipt, the charger and my phone. I came in very calm and level headed just to feel this guy out and he was very rude. I literally had to tell him to stop interrupting me. I was able to have the charger returned after a little back and forth and YES he literally looked at my phone and tried to plug the charger in. Well, neither of us will ever spend anymore of our money there and I hope you don't either. They need to learn to respect their customers. Happy customers means repeat customers but they don't understand that. read more

Here's the thing: yes, it's locally owned, yes it's a small space, yes it' s got everything you need and many things you don't need but will buy anyhow because Win Long's people (all named Johnny) are unusually helpful and knowledgeable. They know what's there and what should be used to get what results. I couldn't stump them on anything, and i was there almost every day for a month as I helped to get an old house cleaned up. When regular silver polish didn't do the trick, they located the last envelope of Cape Cod polishing cloth, the solution that will take black off tar. ps: I think they're not really named Johnny, but that's what they told me when I asked. read more

I have lived in the neighborhood for 11 years. I have done some plumbing work, electrical, and even installed cabinets and doors in the years here. As a DIY kind of guy, I need quick access, to obscure as well as everyday hardware. These guys have always been able to offer at least three different kinds of everything I need. I never search for what I want. Just ask whoever works the counter, and they not only know exactly what I'm talking about, but exactly where it can be found. I don't know what kind of communication skills some of the negative Yelpers for this place have employed. The staff here have always been informative, yes maybe a little frank, but I'm not looking for a new best friend, just stem bolts or fuses. They have less here than HomeDepot and Builder Supply downtown, but it's just a corner hardware store. They have an above average selection. I do agree it is not displayed very neatly, but again they can tell you where it is so finding it should take 45 seconds. As for price comparisons, large retailers always have better prices because they buy in large bulk, and receive discounts whole sale. For basic stuff their prices are competitive. If you are looking for some really specialized/designer tools, fancy bulbs or housewares go to home depot. If you need a tank kit to repair a toilet, self driving screws, a replacement screen for a door, even potting soil, rubber gloves, light bulbs (that $20 story is uncharacteristic of my experiences), or the infamous keys cut, they have it waiting for you. This is a simple neighborhood, family owned and operated, convenient store. They don't go out of their way to impress you, or distress you. They have what they have at reasonable prices and have served me and this community for over a decade. All you haters, get over yourselves. read more

Got keys done. $4.99 for three keys, much cheaper than my cousin who got it done for $6 for two keys. It was quickly done and the keys worked great. Prices are definitely higher for a few other things I scouted out than your Walmart or Target. But for price, convenience and quality - not too bad. Small, crowded place but it has a big variety of hardware products, with a lot of the typical junk you see in this area. The woman and man who run it are knowledgeable about home-building skills. This place literally has everything you will ever need for your little at home projects. When you first walk in it looks like a freaking mess in there, but you will always have the nice lady behind the counter smiling and waiting for you to tell her what you're looking for. The staff is so knowledgable and every time I have ever needed things from screws to clothesline to window screens, this store has definitly been there to help me. I would reccomend them to anyone.
