Lately, I have not wanted to bother with Winco. Here's why. It's midnight, and I just counted 19 employees doing stocking, one person on a register, including one fat cat sitting himself down in the back room where the stocking and truck emptying takes place.The one open register has a line that is all the way to the back of the store - again. it used to be that if it came here after 11 PM, I could get checked out efficiently. No longer. By the time I get my cold food home it will not be anything but a pile of bacteria. Here's a newsflash, Winco: you can't stay in business until you begin taking money efficiently from customers. I think you're gonna need to pay those 19 employees you have stocking and emptying the trucks...But you're gonna have to SELL that stuff that was on the trucks, and you're not gonna be selling it to anymore. I can't risk my life getting my food home after it has thawed and has poison. Your low prices don't mean anything if I can't check out in a timely fashion. You're bringing it in, and you're putting it on the shelves, but you aren't taking money efficiently. That's just plain stupid. THIS IS N O T how to run a business. read more

What a Bellingham gem of a supermarket! It's the biggest small business I've ever seen. Employee-owned, open 24/7, super clean, spacious aisles, and the most extensive bulk section I've ever seen in my entire life! I haven't had a chance to sample the fresh cooked food yet (fried chicken, etc.) but will do a a subsequent visit, as Winco is now part of my monthly big shopping run. read more

WinCo Foods is one of those places where you go in to buy a couple of items and come out with $120 bill. That's because the prices are reasonable, and the variety is great. They have a lot of everything. You also get few hundred steps, as the store is large. Two thing I like about them the most. First, their bulk food section is so good, one can spend an hour just there. Second, their fresh salad can't be beaten. It's large and often goes on sale. Most of the time the checkout line looks longer than bread lines in the old Soviet Union, but the line moves fast. Customer service is the "luck of the draw," so be prepared. The parking lot is large enough to even accommodate the Thanksgiving and Christmas crowds. read more

A grocery store. There isn't much to say about it. It's stocked with everything except organic goods and many items are prepackaged and full of preservatives. They have produce that looks good and healthy - again no organic - and everything is much less expensive than other grocery stores. Staff were friendly and helpful when needed. read more

Service at Bellingham Winco is the worse I have EVER seen. Lead cashier truly a nightmare "Joi" - Joi was anything but a JOY to deal with... What a terrible ordeal just shopping at this store dealing with "staff" such as her. This employee has no business being in any form of management up to and including being a "lead cashier". I'm not really a health nut) I've had chicken from every store's deli in Bellingham... repeatedly. I consider myself a bit of an expert on fried chicken. Consequently after many hours and bones of analysis I declare Winco's fried chicken the Best Of The City. When it's fresh from the fryer, it is unbeatable. The breading is fresh, light, tasty and cooked perfectly. The chicken has a crispy outside and moist inside. Perfect! As an added bonus, they put it out early, often by 9:00 am. (More like a 3.5 star review but I'm rounding up). What do you get when you cross Walmart with Grocery Outlet and Cash N' Carry and a smidge of Costco thrown in the mix? You guessed it: Winco! My kid has been raving about Winco in Oregon for a few years now, so when I was recently in Bellingham to pick up some of my iced coffees at Target only to find out they were out of them (the horror!), I decided to go down the street to Winco to check it out. Sure enough, they had tons of this iced coffee there, along with nearly everything else one could possibly want. This place is huge. I wasn't expecting a warehouse -like setting. It's quite the no-frills-like place, truly a warehouse, cavernous with concrete floors and an industrial, stark interior. The aisles and aisles of shelves were very well-stocked and well organized and the layout of the place was easy to navigate. There were also employees scattered about and the few I asked questions of were all eager to help me find specific items. The store was very clean when I visited (unlike other warehouse-like stores, that are sometimes messy and/or unclean in areas). Also, as an aside, there was quite an eclectic mix of customers in the store when I was here (think "people of Walmart", if you know of the reference). Eccentric. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it makes for a colorful scene. They have all of the basics here and then some. Big brand names of all the foods you could imagine. A decent produce department and deli. An impressive bulk foods section (nice!). When I walked down the household cleaner aisles, I noted that they don't have the higher-end brands that you see at Target but they have more than the basic brands. I also noted that they have very few options when it came to coffee syrups, but they had a few flavors by the same brand. They also had a small seasonal area with picnic and fitness items. The prices of everything I checked were cheaper than Target prices. Not by a lot, but enough that it'd add up if you were making a large order. However, the coffee syrup cost $2 more per bottle than at Cash 'N Carry (now called Smart Foodservice Warehouse). So certain items still cost less elsewhere, depending on the item, FYI. There are tons of check-out lines here, and despite the long lines at each cash, they all moved quite quickly. My check-out cashier was efficient and friendly enough. I should note too that the parking lot is enormous, so you'd never have to worry about finding a place to park here. All in all, I liked this store and if I were grocery shopping for a family, this might be my go-to grocery store. For my needs, though, at this time in my life, I'd probably just come here for my ice coffees on the off-times that Target is out of them. read more

During this time of rampant inflation Winco never fails to deliver consistently low prices and has become my favorite place to regularly shop for groceries. I love their deli selection of quick take-out specialty items like Orange and Chili lime chicken and a great selection of fresh ready make salads. My favorite part of this store is their gigantic bulk food section where I can select everything from baking soda to nuts, candies, flours, pastas, beans, rice and dried fruits, spices, etc., etc. I can buy as little or as much as I want at unbelievable savings! If you are one who loves shopping on a budget but doesn't want to buy bulk, winco is your spot! They have their own store brand (think western family style) which is always discounted, and they offer everything else at the lowest prices you will find. On some items they even compare what other big names are charging. The store is large but things are easy to find and they have a huge selection of Hispanic and bulk items. They are a co-op store so it is employee owned, and their employees rival that of Trader Joe's, they are always friendly and enthusiastic. One reason I did not give a full 5 stars is that to keep operating costs low, they do not accept credit cards, only debit, and I have run into this being an issue before. read more

Everytime I walk in, I get the feeling of a warehouse. Cheap prices. Service are friendly (not all Winco but this one is not bad). If you bring your own bags, they give you 6 cents per bag back instead of they charging you. I like that concept. Come here quite often, and have always found pretty good deals. They do price match. Sometimes I do find it a hit and miss. Quality might not be that great on some products. But you are getting what you paid for. This place doesn't have a pharmacy. read more

These are my usual items: $ Pistachios (Nichols Farms 1 lb bag) $ Yakult (i.e., Japanese probiotic drink) $ Kerrygold butter $ Chobani yogurt $ Dave's Killer Bread $ Franz bread These are all national brands. So, the quality is the same wherever you buy them, but they are much cheaper here. In particular, the pistachios are deeply discounted. The last time I bought them, the 1 lb bag was only $5.98! If you want to go grocery shopping in the middle of the biggest homeless encampment in Bellingham, look no further. Literally four sides of this property are camped 24/7. They have the best prices in town, they have an okay selection, and not everyone can afford to shop at the co-op or whole foods, but I mean, say what you want to about corporate values and being employee-owned and whatever, but I don't feel safe in the parking lot, my partner had her backpack stolen at this store, and their security feels barely adequate. read more

The gentleman (I use the term loosely) working in the liquor store was an absolute jerk today. There were 3 people in there when I picked up my vodka. He served them both and I stepped up right behind them to the counter. A couple showed up at the end of the counter where it says Lottery tickets and he walked away and waited on them. Then he came back and worked on his register which I was DIRECTLY in front of for a minute or so. A man came in grabbed a bottle and went to the Lottery ticket counter and he moved to serve him? I said are you kidding me? He said can't you read the sign? A tiny 6 x 8 sign buried among liquor ads says form line here. I left and will never spend a dime there again. The store was mobbed (I was fine with that) and the liquor store was basically empty. Might be his shining customer service! read more

I just love this place! They have really reasonable prices and huge selections of items. Fresh produce and even bulk items like candy and nuts. They even have from time to time taco meat, where they shred the meat in a specific way, and season with their in-house spices. Makes the best taco salad I've had in years! I do buy Kelly Gold butter from them, they are about 30% less expensive than the other stores in the area. The decor may not be really luxurious. I cant see any reason not to give 5 stars. The prices are excellent and we have always been able to find what we need. The bulk food selection is very good. If you want organic or specialty items its not the place to find things like that. However as a regular grocery store i think its very good. Checkout is usually quite speedy although you have to do your own bagging. We managed to get a free turkey today since our purchase was over 125 dollars. Nice gesture on their part. I'm pretty certain Winco management's training program for the employees, includes, never greet the customers, never smile, and if you're shopping really late at night, you may get run over with the forklift. I'm not sure why the 'employee owned' Store lacks in great customer service? I hope it's not because they are miserable. That being said, the prices are too good to not shop there. I will recommend wearing your most comfortable shoe's you own, bring a Red Bull for the halfway through break and another before you bag your own groceries. Do not slack at the end if your trip. The cashiers will scowl at you for holding up the groceries, so be fast and proficient and remember, we are helping the employees who would normally have to do this as well. These jobs are already being consumed by self checkout robots already so I will take a forklift to the Achilles' tendon anytime. Shopping here is worth every penny I save. read more

I am a fan of our Winco at home, and this branch is good as well. As the other reviews mentioned, they have terrific prices. Nice selection of bulk items. They are very clean, organized, and stocked. They also give 6 cents discount for every "environmentally friendly" bag that you bring in and use. The customer service was excellent. The girl who was at the self-checkout area was wonderful. She had to help us out a couple of times and was very friendly as well. Wish we had self-checkout available at my hometown Winco. Just was not too pleased with the parking lot. It was kind of crazy that day were there. People and cars were all over the place. Took awhile to get out of there. read more

Winco, being owned by its workers,.. already has an ethical advantage to me over Walmart (where I'd never shop anyways) and Costco,.. but I'm also cheap so if that were all it had going for it,.. I couldn't give it 4 stars. I've done quite a bit of price comparison in Bellingham between the different grocery stores and Winco probably is the best "overall" solution, but you have to be selective. Where Costco forces one to buy in bulk to get value,.. Winco offers both large and normal sized quantities, and far more brands. For food, it is comprehensive, so you could just stop here and do all your shopping. Unlike Costco,.. no membership, no huge lines, and less busy. For the most part the food prices (milk, meat, etc.) are similar to Costco or other value based places, but off the top of my head, the specific items I simply cannot get better and cheaper than Winco (plus I like the Winco brands better): -anything Mexican, especially the corn tortillas which in Vancouver,...800% more expensive! (actually not exaggerated) -Yogurt: better brands, better prices, more ability to select variety and not bulk 20 packs -shredded cheese for pizza: slightly cheaper here -pizza dough: surprisingly hard to find good dough elsewhere (the other good place for cheap dough is Trader Joe's) Lastly, lets not forget that many of us are picking up groceries on the way back from a road trip and home to Canada. WINCO is a five star grocery emporium! They only get four stars from me because they make you pay for paper bags with no handles. From my experience here in Bellingham, they have the cheapest prices in town, especially in their deli and prepared foods area. They also carry random things that you don't see another stores. I saw RC Cola for the first time in years! It's a really busy place for Canadians, so I try to avoid going on the weekends when the canuks fill the store and parking lot. I've been coming to this store for a while and have had great experiences and I enjoy the low prices. As I was trying to purchase a bottle of jim beam bourbon the lady at the register had a question for the manager about my ID (it was slightly torn). After it was examined it was returned to me with the front film completely torn off. When i asked what had happened to it the manager said it was not me and walked off. I did not get my bourbon and my ID was completely ruined. My identification card was accepted many times before (I understand that it may be unacceptable). I now have to get a new license because of these incompetent workers, i will not shop here again. read more

When you can sell Haggen Danz for $3.99, a full $3 cheaper than back home, that's worth the 5th star. Ok, maybe not, but W is open 24 hrs, so there we go ;) My 1st time there; it's easy to miss their sign in this maze of neon signs at this intersection of Bellis Fair Parkway, as W is actually a few blocks in. Now I won't go to Walmart for junk food anymore lol. And look at pic of the ice cream bars too; I just bought the same box at Shoppers Drug Mart the night before, for $4.99---considered on sale because the regular price is $7.49! Being the first time here, spending an hour here just flew by. It's a huge, huge place, bigger than a Costco, probably Walmart/Fred Meyer size. Interior, though, does feel like a warehouse, as they're really keeping costs to a minimal to pass along the savings to us. Probably why no credit cards are accepted. If there's any negative, the bakery section isn't no Safeway. But if you must, it's in the right hand side, in the corner, but if you go deep in the back, that's where the ice cream section is ;) Ben's & Jerry also very good prices. You simply can't beat their prices and selection, not to mention a bulk section that is second to none. Their deli, meat, and seafood areas are well-stocked and I've never had a problem with quality. They also have a great selection of Hispanic and Asian groceries. The staff is friendly and super helpful, and the store is very clean. It's a Walmart with a Costco layout and dollar store prices with a 200 car parking lot. Grab at least 2 shopping carts because this place is like ikea but for food, you can't just leave with 1 item! The store is very large and poorly laid out, which is almost a benefit for them as you have to go down every aisle to find what you're looking for. They have amazing deals on pantry items, soft drinks/ non alcoholic beverages and of course booze. Usually I can get a large bottle of nice wine for $5.50 USD. I am a huge yoghurt nut and usually leave with a cooler full of yoghurt to take home to canada. I'd suggest brining your own bags as they give you paper ones with no handles that break easy. read more

I love Winco! If you are frugal and interested in buying staples in bulk, as I am, I highly recommend the bulk section which is amazingly diverse for things like legumes, pasta, cereal, sugar, spices, maple syrup, even peanut butter...they have the lowest prices for unbleached flour I have seen in town, and the employees in bulk are happy to point you in the right direction. The bagels here and other bakery items are also delicious and pretty cheap. There are a few things that are cheaper elsewhere, but for the most part this is my primary grocery store and I don't have much trouble finding anything I need here. The generic foods tend to be very good to quality as well. They don't take credit so be sure to bring cash, debit, or check. It's also 24 hours, which is wonderful, because shopping when there aren't crowds is so much more pleasant. Go later in the evening or early in the morning and you will enjoy the leisurely experience. read more

Absolutely love Winco but recently their produce quality has really dropped so it's a little disappointing (Also have had issues with produce signs not being updated to reflect the latest price which led to me spending more than I normally would on an item). I had only visited a Winco Foods once in the past and was very unimpressed. But when, before the new Winco in Bellingham opened last month, a number of articles in the press talked about Winco and the way they do business and are poised to give WalMart some competition, I was intrigued! A company with low low prices and they pay their people a living wage, nice! Our Winco moved into an old hardware/sporting goods store that seems to have been vacant more than it's been occupied. So I was happy to see an existing building put to good use. The store is huge and the parking lot has been full every time I have been there. The store looks great from the outside, clean and uncluttered. You enter to the Wall of Values with some of their biggest price savers. There are some crazy good deals here! Produce is next, nothing special here apart from the blantant lack of staging and arrangement of displays. Produce boxes are set out and open for the picking. Nothing fancy and perhaps even crude in this day of careful retailing and colorful farmers' market displays. 900 bins of bulk foods is next, lots of deals here. Deli and fresh seafood are next, I didn't get more than a roasted chicken here. Prepared meats, dairy, frozen and bakery complete the outside of the store. Pros: huge selection and lots of very low prices. Lower than anyplace else I shop, significantly so in most cases. Cons: Not all products are here...nor are they always easy to find. Like bacon, there was some on the wall of values, more by the fresh meats, and the expected full selection in yet another place. Not the best, and always left me wondering if I couldn't find what I wanted if it wasn't just someplace else (that I couldn't find)! Crowds, the store is still super busy, I am not a big fan of dealing with crowds. The people. There could be a new web site call The People of Winco if my visits are any indication. First: Winco does not accept credit. Debit, Cash (Canadian too), and local checks. No floral department, no pharmacy, no fluff. Winco is almost like a price club, but normal grocery sizes, no membership or "card" needed, and the selection is awesome. They save you money wherever possible. .05c for a paper bag, or bring your own- let them know you brought some and you get .07c refunded per bag (up to 6). It is bag your own. Very busy, but that truly depends on what time you go. If you show up at 5:30pm on a weeknight, you are of course going to be fighting the after work crowd. Yes, lots of Canadians. I am becoming very disappointed with this location. At first, I thought it was the cat's meow. It is open 24 hours, it's never crazy busy like Walmart up a few blocks, prices were always really good. They were fully stocked. Now, we find the prices have risen at Wincos to the point of them no longer being competitive with other merchants in the area like Walmart, Target, and Fred Meyer, just to name a few. On occasion, you might find a few things cheaper but that's becoming rare. Not only that, the other places mentioned take credit cards. Winco is cash only which makes them not such a good deal. Finally, one day we came in and wanted a quick bite to eat. We headed over to the deli where they have hot premade soups. We had to ask for the spoons, but they didn't have any salt, pepper, and definitely not crackers. I asked the employee working and he said that location never supplies salt, pepper and crackers. Ok, I can maybe see them not providing crackers, but salt or pepper? If it wasn't for the consistently empty shelved Walmart, we would not be shopping at WInco Bellingham. read more
