A large "Buddha bowl" type meal with rice, eggplant dish over it, some roasted veggies, Beechers mac & cheese, & a separate 12 oz bowl of soup cost just around $31. Seemed a bit spendy. The food, of course, is high quality so it was worth it. People here are always super friendly and walking around is fun. We don't live here so don't do our regular shopping here. After shopping here for 25 years (!), it's heartbreaking to see this store become so much less than what it once was. The marketing is good, but imho it is about being pretty with little substance. The front line team members are friendly yet as confused as this customer as to what is going on with management and purchasing. Wasted shelf space where quality and verity take a back seat to row after row of the same item. Whoever the target audience is at this time, it's clearly not me or really anyone who cares about the environment. Loads of interesting selections. We went there for bread and cereal. They didn't have the specific cereal we were after, but they did have a good variety of healthy breads. Bought a reasonably priced Silver Hills bread, just the kind we were looking for. Seemed to have some interesting deli items, too. You have a beautiful deli, hot foods, a cafe, and delicious desserts ( gluten free, some vegan, a lemon cloud bliss cake, plump pumpkin cookies, etc...) but....where do you sit? A Co-Op is all about community and being welcoming, right?, and part of that is being able to sit and eat before, during, or after your shopping.....with other people! Nice location and my preferred one when it comes between the two Food Co-op locations in Bellingham. For one it's downtown which is where I typically am when I visit but the selection has much more variety to offer here at the downtown location. The beverage selection has considerably more variety for example. It's quite a bit more busier and popular too which makes sense but the parking lot here can take up quite a few vehicles. Like the other Food Co-op location the produce and food is of very good quality which is always important, perhaps even more so when it comes to the food co-ops. In addition to groceries, they have a lot of prepared foods to go, including many vegan items. These items are hit-or-miss. The kale wild rice salad I got today (~$3.50) was as bland as could be -- no dressing or seasoning whatsoever. What gives? If this was representative of their food quality, I'd give it a 1 star review, but I've had lots of good experiences in the past. read more

There have been certain times in my life when I came here and they did not have any chocolate chip cookies available. Those are very difficult times for me. It's hard for me to talk about it. But I persist in the face of these tragic events. I tried the gluten free carrot cake for the first time today and was really impressed. Tastes as good as gluten--just a slightly different texture. I don't like how crowded the aisles get but oh well whatchya gonna do? Oh also the ready-made turkey sandwiches are to-die-for. Mmmm. Filled with lots of mayo, crisp lettuce , fresh tomatoes and they're made with delicious sourdough bread. Their bakery really is amazing. read more

I am not a co-op member, but I shop here on a semi-regular basis. I mostly shop here for meats and produce. In fact, I buy meat only at the co-op. May not be the cheapest place in town, but their meats are more than reasonably priced. The best place to find fresh and high quality grass-fed beef. Most of their produce items are organic. Green price tags are organic, and orange tags conventional. Many of their organic veggie prices are probably slightly higher than those at Fred Meyer's or Trader Joes, but I think the quality tends to be much better at the co-op. When it comes to fruits, particularly something seasonal like berries and cherries in the summer, the quality here is unparalleled. Another reason for me to shop here is that I feel confident buying things I do not have deep knowledge about. For example, eggs. There are so many options with so many different prices. Organic, cage-free, free- range, and whatnot. Whatever I find at the co-op, I feel safe to purchase even the cheapest option they have because I know they care about people, consumers and producers alike. I could be mistaken, but many people, particularly people who do not actually shop here, tend to think the co-op is way too expensive. There are indeed things that are very expensive, and I do stay away from them. However, their meats and produce are only slightly more expensive than other stores, but, once again, the quality tends to be much better here. So, if you see value in high quality organic or sustainable food and are willing to pay a bit extra, I think the co-op is the best place to shop in town. Last but not least, people who work at the co-op are genuinely friendly and very knowledgable about what they carry. If you live in/near Bellingham and have not stepped in here, I encourage you to go inside and see. The nice food store with a lot of variety and outstanding bulk section. Can find a lot of healthy food here especially in the Nutrition department. The baked sweet treats outstanding in the nutritional content and flavor, I have yet to find some chocolate cookie or brownie or other dessert or snack bar that disappoints. The cafe for a hot meal is also outstanding. The soup served fresh made daily and highly nutritious and flavorful especially enjoyed the Hungarian mushroom soup recently. read more

The fresh organic produce is my favorite part of this Coop. Beautifully displayed and always plentiful. Today I purchased two stalks of celery as you do not have to get a whole "bunch". I love the deli department with lots of fresh salads, soups, meats, pastas and interesting selection of other dishes. Great sandwiches and wraps ready to "grab and go". Their staff is always helpful and friendly. I frequent the bulk food and spice section almost every time I visit even if I don't need any just because it is so interesting to peruse the selection and smell the fragrance of freshly dried herbs. read more

Epic hot bar. As a meat eater, I fully appreciate being able to eat high quality meats, cooked well for only 9.99/lb. There is no better deal in town and frankly, knowing the meat is safe and local makes a big difference to me. Also, if for any reason you are trying to avoid salt, the food is not salted heavily so that it is safe for people who can't have it. I had stopped by last month one night during the end of my visit. It's another great local health grocery chain that sort of channels similar and different vibes as PCC and Terra Organic (I'd lump WF but they're a national chain). I just strolled the aisles a bit, perusing what there is to offer. Certainly cool selection. I ended up at the tail end of closing at the hot bar deli. There were some tofu items still out and briefly asked a gentleman about the ingredients or sauce. He was glad to assist and even got the product used from an aisle to show me and explained some basic tidbits. I took a few tofu slabs to go for dinner back in my room whilst watching the TV. Popped in for lunch since it is half a block from my new office. I had to make it quick so I grabbed a turkey sandwich and sat upstairs. It was great I could look over the balcony while I ate and just watch the hustle and bustle of others. It was crazy busy. People getting hot buffet style lunch by the pound. My sandwich was fresh on fresh baked bread, turkey, leaf lettuce, tomato and sprouts. Yum! The smells from the hot food were amazing! The man that checked me out was so sweet and friendly. Amazing bulk section Great gluten-free, vegan, dairy free pastries as well as an outstanding hot bar. Good sale deals and good mission as a business. Workers are friendly and helpful. Great place to shop, eat, drink tea (free!) and feel at peace. My family always debates where to eat for dinner and 9 time outs of ten we end up back at the coop, it's that's good. read more

After eating to the tilt at Boundary Bay bistro a few blocks away, which would've walked if it wasn't for the light rain, but I digress, decided to drop in to this medium-sized grocery store that looks like another Whole Foods. Same good healthy focus, on supporting local, organic products. When I checked out their ice cream section, no Ben and Jerry's, etc.---impressive. Their deli/bakery/dessert section in the back had a good vegetarian options. Some decent sales, though not on my Knudsen's black cherry juice, in fact, more expensive than back home, $7.49 versus $5.99. Even a section on skincare. Free parking, own lot. read more

Very pleased with the way they are handling this covid-19 epidemic crisis - I had to get some fresh produce on sat mar 21 at the N Forest store. Co op has taken control and are doing things right to protect us and the staff. No personal shopping bags allowed in the store (to prevent possible cross contamination). All carts r sanitized by employee outside so u can only take ones completed. They've erected large clear plexi panels to separate u from cashier - covering a really good protective area. All fresh produce employees wear masks. All employees wear gloves. Place smells disinfected. I still wore my mask and gloves but felt pretty safe being there. I'll go to co op any time I need food...and feel safe while there (unlike my closest commercial grocery at birch bay center that has no protective plexi to safeguard cashiers, nobody wearing masks, some staff wear gloves. I was the only customer wearing a mask/gloves. They just seem too cavalier and generally are the kind of people who think this is just a hoax! i never feel they share my values - even before covid19 happened). Therefore, I've always been a co-op fan - they are consistent with their provision of organic produce and food stuffs - and like any co-op, they don't always have some items because the value and quality must be present before they get it in - i like that value and business practice. Yum - the co-op! Most important thing to know: If you head over to the deli side of the store, they always have spreads and crackers to sample. It's your lucky day if they're sampling the smoked salmon spread, otherwise, you'll just have to buy it. I Stopped in for a salad on a Sunday evening around 7 pm The salad bar had plenty of choices , however they didn't have croutons left, seeing how they remain open till 10pm 7 days a week I'd went ahead and asked for some to be restocked, The cashier went back to kitchen to ask, she said they would bring them out shortly, My boyfriend n I went up to the cafeteria to eat While we waited, he checked 3 Times An no refill. The store isn't all that busy at all? They are just croutons, but they are the BEST croutons ever, they are the reason I'm willing to fork over 8$ for a salad !! The community co-op is clean, has excellent selection, and plenty of fresh foods. Their deli is excellent as well-they are always happy to give you a sample of something if you are unsure. I have always found their layout to be easy to navigate, and they have a wide selection of foods you can buy in bulk. They have a wonderful loose leaf tea selection as well as great snacks. A hidden treasure here: their makeup and beauty section. They have excellent taste in eyeshadow colors as well as body products! You know... I love the options here and I love local and organic produce, but the prices kill me! I'm also not a big fan at the looks you get when you ask for a paper bag. I do intend to use the recycled bags I have but I often forget. I came here the other day to grab a coffee with my sister and thought maybe because it was sunny and warm I'd prefer an iced tea. The menu has iced coffee, hot coffee and hot tea. But no iced tea! I found it a bit odd because all they had to do was brew some tea and add ice cubes to chill it. If you like people watching though, this place is primo. Lots of weirdos, tons of hippies and almost no one wears shoes unless they're of the hiking variety. Sandals and crocs galore! read more

I also feel like it's the most judgmental place in town! When I have been here after work dressed in professional clothes, I get looks of that range from dirty to surprised. When I have come in on the weekend in jeans, I get somewhat more friendly looks but mostly ignored. But always feel like I'm getting looked over. It's so stupid. Beyond that the customer service SUCKS so hard here, the cashiers act as if you are interrupting their conversation at a party when you get in their line. This Co-op needs a HUGE lesson in DIVERSITY! read more

like Hillary M - I really want to love the co-op... but I can't. Everything is a million times more expensive, when you can find it at Fred Meyer for less (yes, same exact item, like milk and frozen items). I have also never been impressed with their deli. Ever try their macaroni? Its dry and bland. I threw out over half of it. I only buy organic now (except for outside the dirty dozen when it comes to produce) and I dread having to go to the co op. On one hand, if I am sick or just rolled out of bed I blend in, but if I actually took a shower and did my hair I feel out of place. I also agree with another reviewer that the cashiers are rarely friendly, mostly talk amongst themselves, and generally don't look too happy. I am waiting for the day we get better organic food store. I keep reminding myself I need to start going to barganica more. read more

I never thought I'd have a favorite grocery store, but the Community Food Co-op has earned that spot. At the very least, the employees I've spoken with have been helpful and polite... several have become friends. I can't say that about any other grocery store where we've been regular customers. Knowing that I'm getting top-quality items that have been vetted for GMOs, organic, etc. makes my shopping faster, which I appreciate. More often than not, prices are very competitive with other local grocery stores... many things we buy regularly are less expensive here. The selection is excellent too; and I really like the focus on local food producers. Baked items are clearly marked for those with sensitivities. It was a very pleasant surprise to find ground bison and ground elk in the meat section. And I'm always finding interesting things to try in the extensive bulk section, including herbs and spices. In addition to discounts on items, Co-op members regularly receive mailers (both snail and email), with coupons, news, in-depth articles about local food issues and happenings, and recipes. Members can also special order items in bulk at a discount. All this makes getting a membership well worth it; and the option to fully buy in over a long period doesn't put a crimp in one's budget. The Community Food Co-op is a wonderful distillation of all that Bellingham is about, with great selection and even greater people. Cannot recommend it too highly. read more

The co-op has, hands down, the snottiest, most pompous and rude cashiers in all of Bellingham. Surprisingly, the worst offenders are male! I have rarely taken snark off of a female checker, but unfortunately, I seem to get the snotty males with dreads/hipster hair/poor hygine every. single. time. I remember when they were on State St, when i was a little kiddo, and all of the cashiers were really nice, older hippie folks, and it was a good experience. Now...no. I refuse to even go to the Swan Deli because of a few cashiers working there that are intensely heinous - well, that and everything but the baked goods there suck major ass. My husband refuses to go here, as he doesn't feel the need for unwashed college kids to attempt to look down their greasy noses at him and pay up the yin yang for stuff we can get way cheaper (and in a friendlier atmosphere) at Barganica, the public market, TJ's, or even cost cutter. What's worse is when you shop with all of the Sehome Hill yuppie-hippies who drive there in their Beemers and then THEY look down on you for being some broke snowboarder kid from the foothills...while the employees are looking down on you for not being an unwashed Bellingham mess...wow. I am glad they moved the NICE employees over to the new co-op by WCC. I will be going there from now on, forest st can kiss my ass. read more

HOLY HECK eating at the cafe here is really expensive! (This is just a review of the cafe.) I've gone a few times seeking healthy eats for my niece and I, and each time I was shocked at the cost. Of course, it isn't all bad to go broke eating lunch at the cafe here since it is a non-profit community organization, and the food is healthy. Another reason to favor this place is the location: it's on the WWU side of downtown, within walking/biking distance of the campus area and the quaint residential neighborhoods bordering downtown. The main reason I will come back here is to get healthy fast food, however, I do consider the common burrito to be a very healthy food, regardless of who makes them---and any burrito lunch is much cheaper than Co-Op Cafe for lunch. This place is great. I'm from out of town so I wanted to get some yummy (frozen) vegan products and they have a great variety. I also look for vegan chicken (usually Boca brand, and they had a great assortment of their products. They were a little more expensive than what I expected, but it was still great. The staff was funny, nice and always had a smile on their face, which I enjoy. I find that a lot of people in this town (and this place) smile a LOT more than where I come from (Montreal, Canada) and I really enjoyed that. They also have fresh food you can buy to eat, although there wasn't anything vegan (that I saw) that day. I would recommend this place to people who are looking for some (frozen) vegan goodies and organic product. read more

Similar to the food coops and specialty organics store here in Vancouver, however, this seems more local to the Bellingham community in conjunction with being more affordable. It shocked me that the same item in Vancouver is only 1/3rd of the cost. Everyone seems to complain that the prices are killing them, however, once again, clearly they've never shopped for similar items in Vancouver. I was shocked when the same protein and snack bars were 1/3rd of what I pay at home, therefore, my best friend and I went to town and bought a bunch of bars for the road. I see women wearing flowing scarves, and crystal earrings; I almost cry. I eat great food. This is better than anything in eastern WA and similar prices to PCC in Seattle. I read other reviews. I did find a few snotty cashiers. It was strange. Hippiedom does not come with a better-than -others right. Humility and peace signs were the trademark when I was a hippie.
