This Bakery, located on US Highway 93 in an area where you get little cell phone reception is a hidden gem! The quality of the backed goods and service received here is beyond what you would expect from a bakery. A pretty outside patio facing the hills behind them and with a cure little pond makes having a cup of coffee with your baked treat a nice treat. First things first. The Donuts! Oh my, the size of 2 regular donuts stacked together and 4 times as tasty! The dough soft and chewy like that of angel food cake or another spongy dough. Get them warm and while they're available as I've gone in and had to wait as someone ordered 2 dozen followed by a 4 dozen order! Yes they're that good. The Huckleberry Turnover have a buttery crust that reminds my girl and me off a Danish butter cookie but with a house made Huckleberry filling. The Sticky Buns, oh my..... Eat one if you date but be warned when the pecans, caramel and dough touch your lips your new addiction has just been round... Only have managed to have it once and I'm saddened that it will be at least a year before I'll have another one again. The Huckleberry Muffins are soft and rich with huckleberries. Could use a bit more sugar but ask if they will coat it in the donut glaze and problem solved. My husband and I stopped by the bakery on our way out of St. ignatius because some of the locals told us we HAD to try the doughnuts. It was a little after 8 am when we stopped in, the baker was in the kitchen mixing up some dough. There was only a dozen doughnuts in the case and we took 4. The baker checked us out and we were off. She was a nice lady and the bakery is in a nice little spot to sit and enjoy your food. Now the doughnuts: they are big. Like I could only eat 1/2 for breakfast big. But they were still warm when we got them from the case and to say they tasted amazing is understating the flavor these doughnuts have. I'm not sure how she cuts them so thick yet they still cook in the middle, but it's a miraculous thing. My friend said they use potato flour in the doughnuts. They weren't too sweet, weren't to greasy and had a few levels of flavor. The only reason I gave the Windmill Bakery 4 stars instead of 5 is that when I went to finish my doughnut the next morning, it already seemed a little stale and tough. We stopped unknowingly for fresh cherries at the stand next to the bakery and after walking across the lot to follow my kids to the restrooms, my nose was socked with the overwhelming smell of freshly cooked pastries. OMG. I looked inside the case at the glistening heaps of freshly coated donuts and of course, immediately grabbed some wax paper to grab a couple. They were freaking warm. Seeing as I had just gained 2 pounds by just smelling these beauties, I paid, grabbed my son and headed outside excitedly. We dug in while they were still warm. Happiness. We so thoroughly enjoyed them that I immediately turned back around and went back inside for 4 more. Long story short, do yourself a favor and stop here. The owners were great, everything we purchased here was amazing, and I seriously don't think you'll find a better donut if you try. A couple of days later, I opened the donut bag to find my wife had eaten 97% of the last donut. I almost divorced her after I regained my composure after a good cry. They're that good. You know how incredibly good it looks? It's better. I do think I can add something of value here that most people don't mention because of the amazing baked goods overshadowing everything. The coffee was legitimately great. I'm a coffee snob (not proud of it, life would be way easier if I didn't insist on great coffee), I grew up around fantastic coffee made right and I'm generally disappointed. Not so here. This is an amazing little secret treat!! You walk in and there is nothing in the display case, no menu, no prices. There is just a busy couple cooking donuts. We ordered a dozen for 7 of us, which was more than enough! They tell you it will be a 5 to 10 minute wait. They make them right then!! The donuts were large, hot, and filling. I appreciate the owners, they treated each customer equally. While we were waiting a lady came in and asked for 2 donuts and she was in a hurry, the owner said it would be 10 min that others were waiting before her and she was irritated and he told her she better hurry and go. I used to go here in College and take a few friends with from Missoula for an awesome Saturday morning drive and donuts for everyone. I was first introduced to this place by some family friends that were visiting. They came down from the flathead to the bitterroot with these donuts that changed my life. I immediately went back to college and took friends there to get them hot and fresh. I love donuts. I eat donuts if they are free. I eat donuts when my boss brings them to work. I eat donuts at lots of local shops. Vodoo in Portland is great for crazy decorated ones and all, but if you are wanting a true, intense, large amazing donut then look no further. I can't remember how much the donuts are, but I know I would pay anything to get these donuts. On a side note, I did eat five donuts one time... Several friends from Missoula took me there on the way to a hike in the Mission Mnts. There first time I stepped in that bakery, it was like waking up in my mom's kitchen- I knew the smells so well, from so long ago. Homemade, fresh, delicious! Since that time, I always make it a point to stop by and see "what's cookin'". The doughnuts are amazing - always buy several; the sandwich wraps and soups fresh and delicious; and the pies - well, why do you think I will drive an hour just to get them as gifts or when guests arrive from out of town. My cousin and I stopped in to Windmill Bakery on our way back to Arizona after an epic week in Glacier National Park. It was 2:50 in the afternoon; the bakery was 10 minutes from closing. All they had left was a single donut - a testament to demand. That single donut would have been worth the entire 2,500 mile trip from Arizona. We each had half the confection of perfection. Unlike most donuts, Windmill Bakery's are also filling; even a split was enough to keep us on the road for hours into Idaho.
