Wine Impression is a quiet wine and spirits store in Laurel Heights. The employees are kind and helpful and they have a wide selection to choose from. I often go into this place to find something special or different. I am seldom disappointed. It can be a little bit more expensive than elsewhere depending on what you are looking for but overall it seems to simply be higher quality, with few if any low-end wines. All in all, they're a great store and perfectly located for those living up in Laurel Heights. read more

This place has a wide and varied selection, but it took me a few visits to figure out where everything was -- the organization was a little weird. Maybe it was just hard to find what I wanted because they have so much on offer. So I guess that's a plus. On the other hand ... I don't like this place, and that's entirely the fault of the people who work there. Every time I go in (and I've been there five or six times), I am pretty much ignored; when I do ask for and finally receive help (and it's not an easy task to get their attention), the advice they give is not really that good. I've bought several bottles on their recommendation after telling them what I had in mind, and none came close to what I had told them I liked -- "I'm looking for a Marlborough sauvignon blanc. I really love the grassy quality in this '06 Oyster Bay. Can you recommend one that's a similar style?" netted me a horribly oaky, harsh wine that I couldn't finish, after having paid $17 for the privilege. I doubt I'll be going back; I'd rather get my cheap wines at BevMo and the good stuff at Blackwell's, where I'm not made to feel like an intruder for daring to cross the threshold. read more

This place just sucks. It may have the worst service of any wine store I have ever been to. Going to buy wines for the holidays should be fun, and when you are spending hundreds of dollars at a small store, the staff should be helpful. Instead, it is a total buzz-kill going here. I usually put up with it and just buy something, but today I just could not bring myself to give them the business- so I walked out empty-handed. read more

Do you know the difference between Pinot Grigio and Pinot Gris? Well I didn't. The helpful men in this shop helped me. They were easy to talk to and offered suggestions. They aren't trying to get you to drop a large amount of $$$ on wine if you're on a budget. That kind of laid back but knowledgeable help is the best when shopping for wine. Sometimes you just want to look around at their large selection and sometimes you need a recommendation on a wine quickly. read more

I question the (numerous) rave reviews, but this is an OK wine store. I conclude the intersection of wine enthusiast, yelp and presidio heights is a small, but effusive, ebullient crowd of tipplers. There's a decent selection from the eclectic and peculiar, to the main stream. All priced within reason, if predictably a little on the high side, give or take, but you wouldn't be coming to this store for bargains, just for a non-chain-store purchase instead of the big discount or supermarket aisle. Some interesting Champagne selections, so I'll be back. The folks their seem well-informed and the shelves are well stocked with good stuff. You probably won't invest in your cellar from these shelves, but you can certainly pick up a few decent bottles of plonk(I think I coined the phrase "cellar savers") to save that cellar from being ransacked by your boozing friends. : ) Also a couple of beers, a wall of spirits and cocktail mixers. This place is AMAZING!!! They know exactly the wine you need at the time and will respect your price range . They have many great value wines! If they say it's worth the money, it's worth the money. I LOVE wine impressions, and am embarrassed that this is my first time writing a review. The gentlemen at this store really know their stuff, not just about the wines they carry, but about all the liquors that they carry. Recently, I visited to buy a scotch for a friend who had done a great favor for me, but needed help as I know nothing about scotch. I spent about 20 minutes speaking with one of the owners (there are three of them and they are all very friendly), and he gave me an incredible education, such that I feel like I could walk into any store and generally find my way around the scotch section...not that I would, I will always go back to wine impressions! He helped me pick out the perfect scotch for my friend, while being conscientious of my friend's taste and my budget. On previous occasions they have helped me to pick out rum, and wine. A great neighborhood store with very friendly owners and very knowledgeable who are happy to give you one on one attention, and tell you everything you could ever wish to know about what you're looking for. And when you give them the price point you're looking for, you aren't treated any differently. read more
