A trained sommelier, Kuna curated the wine program at La Fromagerie Cheese & Wine Bistro for a number of years and eventually became the general manager. He later worked as a sommelier at other area establishments like Planet Wine and Evening Star Cafe. When the storefront next to La Fromagerie became available, Kuna decided to make it his own wine shop. Kuna's mission is to make the entire world of wine accessible to everyone while supporting growers who are engaged in ethically and ecologically responsible farming and business practices. Fellow sommelier Michael Williams works as the general manager of Le Vintage, while La Fromagerie owner and chef Sebastien Tavel came on board as a partner. I recently visited Le Vintage while my family and I were on a short vacation in the DC area. Upon returning to our hotel after a long day of sight-seeing, my wife said, "I can really go for a good bottle of wine after we put the kids to bed." We checked on Yelp and lo and behold we discovered that Le Vintage was right down the street from our hotel. I walked a few blocks down and made it to the small shop. They had an excellent selection of wines as well as an impressive selection of craft beer. The shop also carries artisanal meats, cheeses and crackers for customers to assemble their own charcuterie as an accompaniment for their wine. I picked out a nice-looking bottle of Italian Rosato Frizzante to bring back for my wife and I to share. The employees also invited me to participate in a tasting that was happening in the shop (Le Vintage frequently holds tastings). Slovenian winemaker Bojan Kobal was sampling offerings from his winery Kobal Wine Estate. My wife and I really liked the wine that I brought back to the hotel. We were so impressed with the shop that I went back on our last night in town and purchased one of the Kobal wines that I had previously sampled (a sparkling yellow muscat), as well as some charcuterie items. My husband and I honestly took forever browsing and reading labels. The store manager was incredibly patient with us, even though we probably stayed way too long talking about the cheeses we wanted to try and reading through their recommended pairings pamphlet. She was so knowledgeable and helpful with all of our questions, and even mentioned that they could specialty order anything that might be out of stock for us. Because you can buy their cheese by the 1/4lb, we ended up mixing and matching a selection of five different cheeses and a few cured meats to sample. Everything was absolutely delicious, and they have some really unique flavors available. The wild ramp alpine cheddar was so different to anything I had before, and the truffle manchego cheese was completely packed with so much truffle. The shop is currently celebrating their 10 year anniversary, and I can absolutely see why. Between the incredibly friendly, helpful service and a thoughtfully curated selection of artisanal goods, it's no surprise this business is thriving. This will definitely be my new go-to spot for gifts!

It was great catching up as he shared what he'd been doing since then and how his dream had always been to open his own restaurant. The bison tartare was leaner than traditional beef tartare, and the crispy chips added the perfect savory crunch. The ceviche was incredibly fresh and bright. For our entrées, I had the ribeye while my wife ordered the Dory. The ribeye was cooked perfectly--juicy, tender, and packed with flavor. My wife couldn't stop talking about how buttery and delicious the fish was. To finish the evening, we ordered the 100-Year Port Flight featuring 10-, 20-, 30-, and 40-year ports. One thoughtful touch that stood out was the women's restroom being stocked with amenities like hair ties and hair clips. The store is great, the selections are great and your employees are great, however you probably make a terrible employer for them. You're not the light in the room that's for sure.
