I was gifted a Groupon voucher to this shop, and while I'm not much of a wine drinker, I was excited to stop by when I learned they carry a large selection of other types of drinks, snacks, and specialty cheeses. My husband and I honestly took forever browsing and reading labels. The store manager was incredibly patient with us, even though we probably stayed way too long talking about the cheeses we wanted to try and reading through their recommended pairings pamphlet. She was so knowledgeable and helpful with all of our questions, and even mentioned that they could specialty order anything that might be out of stock for us. Because you can buy their cheese by the 1/4lb, we ended up mixing and matching a selection of five different cheeses and a few cured meats to sample. Everything was absolutely delicious, and they have some really unique flavors available. The wild ramp alpine cheddar was so different to anything I had before, and the truffle manchego cheese was completely packed with so much truffle. The shop is currently celebrating their 10 year anniversary, and I can absolutely see why. Between the incredibly friendly, helpful service and a thoughtfully curated selection of artisanal goods, it's no surprise this business is thriving. This will definitely be my new go-to spot for gifts! read more

I always walk out of here with more than I intended (a good thing ) and that is because the folks here are able to make so many good suggestions based on my tastes! Though I do recommend coming for the wine selection, which is expertly curated, they do have a sundry of charcuterie items, a well stocked cheese case and they partner with a local sausage company. Came in was greeted right away Lisa was the manager and she helped me pick out some wine. She was friendly and I enjoyed talking to her. She gave me some recommendations and let me know what they had to offer. They have a good variety of wines from California, France, Italy, etc. They also sell cider and have a few local wines. They sell cheeses, meats, olives, crackers, and even some sandwiches. Definitely will be back to support. She mentioned a rose festival in June can not wait to check it out. read more

Easily the best shop I've been to in a while! Selection is great, atmosphere is great, and the service is the best I've experienced in the area. Everyone is very kind and approachable - you don't get any of that stuffy or arrogant wine culture that is typical of most shops... they make you feel excited about what you like and what you could try! I've been to many other shops where the guys working make you feel stupid or give off this air of knowing better than you. This shop is nothing like that! If I could give half stars or quarter stars I would rate it at 4.5-4.75. The selection isn't extensive, however what they do have is pretty good and the shop-keepers definitely know their stuff. I needed to get a bottle of merlot for a girl's night in with coworkers and had no idea what to get. Personally I'm a huge Tempranillo/Cab-Sav kind of girl so a good bottle of Merlot previously was not in my purview. The shopkeeper gave me great recommendations, we ended up choosing a merlot from Bench and it was fantastic. My coworkers loved it and so did I. So A+ thanks to the shopkeeper's recommendation! The wines are discounted too, which is wonderful, but not by much. Maybe up to 10% for some wines! read more

I usually pick up a case of beer whenever I stop at the bike shop or pasty place next door. They offer unique brews in small quantities so I usually get to try something new. I can only enjoy wine in small quantities but what I've sampled so far has been very satisfying. The people here are always warm and friendly. This is what makes this place so special and worth coming back to. I recommend the Naragansett 24oz beer in a can. Surprisingly light and refreshing. Also the Richmond lager. read more

I had been wanting to visit this place for a while -- basically ever since I started getting their email updates. Their logo statement says a lot: Big Box Prices. Small Store Service. While that is true that is not the only reason to be a fan. I am also a fan because they have regular themed tastings. After trying to make it over for a while Hubby and I finally visited on Saturday for the "not your kid's ice cream social". It was a nice sampling and we enjoyed our interaction with the three members of the team. This place is not fancy inside. What you are getting is information, variety, value, and interaction. I will definitely be thinking of this location the next time I am looking for a fun local wine experience or to grab a few bottles. Saw an event listed on Yelp for rosé and BBQ, and thought why not try their store out. What I found was this little neighborhood gem, where the people know their customers. In the short time I was there, multiple came in and it was clear the sales associates knew them. In particular, I was blown away by the knowledge that Josh had about wine and the quality of the selections he had available. The best part about the shop, is that it was apparent that Josh isn't about jacking up the price and making a buck, but sharing his passion and knowledge, and above else having fun. Came in here because Yelp recommended their Astro fried chicken and doughnut wine pairing and I was INSTANTLY converted to a fan. The owner (I think his name is Josh?) was sooooo funny and very personable. I commend him for coming up with wine pairings for fried chicken and doughnuts, it was a very creative idea that paid off. The staff seemed to know just about everyone who came in while we were there by name, something that strikes really deeply with me. The selection was pretty wide spread and organized in a cute and clear way (chalk board walls, very cool). We ended up getting four bottle (three of which we tasted at the wine tasting) and some raw milk cheddar. I'll be coming back. read more

What a delightful place! Have you ever been to Total Beverage or the wine and beer section of a Costco? This is the opposite. The store is small yet with a surprising selection. They can choose wines and beers are for their value, not the vineyard's or brewery's ability to supply astounding amounts of their products. And from what I saw the prices are very good. I went on a Thursday evening for one of their wine classes. For $5 you get to sample a flight (flight - that's one of the things I learned) of five wines based on a particular theme. When I went, it was "Wines of the NY Finger Lakes region." In addition to having the opportunity to sample some really good wine, there was someone willing to go into as much detail as we wanted, and home cooked snacks. In this case it was "snack", the lentil stew was wonderful but there were issues that made the potato pancakes unservable. (That's OK because I know without tasting them they would not have been as good as my Grandmother's.) Anyway, nice store, great people, and an opportunity to learn more about what you're drinking if you choose. read more

This is a great local wine shop that has really reasonable prices and helpful folks working there. It's a little tough to sometimes justify stopping at a separate store for wine, when almost anywhere that sells food already sells wine. But Josh (and presumably others) does know his stuff and is very helpful. If you tell them what you are looking for, they will help you out for sure. And the prices really aren't bad - there isn't an expectation that you should be dropping $20 or $25 on a bottle. That said, it's not really a store for browsing - it's pretty small. So you kind of come in with a purpose and they'll help you out. I could see that interaction being maybe a little uncomfortable sometimes. The prices are really pretty good, but the stock rotates. So a couple of times, I've come in looking for more of a something that we enjoyed to find that it's not there any more. But that also means that there are always new bottles of something or other to try. In addition to wine, they stock a moderate amount of high end beers here. This is the kind of local business that you should support. It's not any more expensive that buying wine at the grocery store, but the stock is much better here, and you can learn a thing or two as you try more interesting wines than those at the big chains. Come in and enjoy some customer service as well as a new bottle of wine. read more

Just gave the new McLean location a shot, absolutely loved it. Jon let us browse around for a bit, and then gave us a really nice and laid back tasting before we left. Feels like the kind of business where you can show up, give a very broad description of what you like or don't like, and leave with a fantastic bottle of wine for a GREAT price (seriously, I'm pretty cheap when it comes to wine, and these prices were fantastic...ended up leaving with more than I expected just because they were that good). Side note: In a "quality over quantity" move, they have a slim selection of very, very good beers. Very impressed with the new location, big fan. read more

But it's frustrating when many of the beers don't have price tags and the ones that do are all $14 for a 4 or 6 pack. The Wine Outlet only improves with age. Last night was their annual RSVP champagne tasting. Amazing cheeses were offered along with 8 French champagnes ranging from a very affordable bottle to a life changing tasting of a 2005 Dom Perignon. The store offers a convivial environment with staff who truly know their wines and beer and the lowest prices in Vienna. This is the most convenient location for me but they have stores in Great Falls, McLean and Tysons. Check them out. read more

The Wine Outlet is now where I regularly buy wine. While they don't have the vast selection of Total Wine, somehow they always have something good to try, and the prices are consistently lower than TW. Josh, the owner, and Kathy really know their wines and are always exceptionally helpful and friendly. The tastings they offer are always interesting, and they make them fun. UPDATE (2/16) - Have continued to go to this store for wine, and my view hasn't changed at all. It's clearly the best in the N VA area. They don't have the selection of TW, but they offer some real bargains on highly rated and otherwise little known but very wines. Also, Wine Outlet conducts some very interesting tastings led by the owner or one of his team who are considerably more knowledgeable about wine than the average distributor rep running tastings at other places. I can't comment on the quality of the beer selection as that's not why I go, but others have said they carry some very good, hard to find beers. read more
