Came to pick up wines for a wine tasting party where we had specific criteria we wanted to meet. Instead of shopping 2-3 different stores and spending a ton of time browsing aisles and reading labels (and googling wine reviews?) we decided to head to Vienna Vintner, which we be passed by so many times and never entered. Vienna Vintner is a cute European looking line standing building across from big shopping plazas. It's built like a tavern with a partial loft/second floor upstairs with seating. The space is divided into a "tasting room" on the right and a wine store on the left. They apparently have wine tastings on the regular (I've been missing out!) Overall a really friendly place that's relaxed and pleasant. We were given a tour and helped immediately. We ended up winning an award for one of our wine choices, so these recommendations really hit the mark! Will definitely be back. I was also surprised by how affordable these wines are. I wasn't expecting to find any wines under $25 but ended up seeing quite a few in the $15 range. They also gave us a generous discount. read more

Cozy wine shop with delicious wine & cheese tastings on Fridays (5-7). I sampled 6 types of wine from all around the world including Portugal's Encostas de Serpa, New Zealand's Babish, South Africa's red wine Eikeboom, Austria's white wine Steininger. There's a different theme every week. There are also tastings on Sat afternoons (1-5pm). Surprisingly, the Portugal wine was my favorite. As Portugal is known for its Port, the wines are often overlooked. As a fan of port, I'm glad I dabbled into Portugal red wine. I bought a bottle of the Encostas de Serpa. I love how the Stonehouse red wine made in CA resembles the quaint stonehouse building in Vienna. The Cromwell cheddar cheese peppered with scallions reminded me of sour cream and onion. I enjoyed the scrumptious Scottish cheese so much that I bought it for my dinner party. It was a hit! Highly recommend coming here with a small group for a fun tasting of unique wine paired with decadent cheese. Can't wait to come back! read more

Absolutely love the new location! Beautiful rustic feel and 18 century building. The use of old wine crates on the stair case is so cute. The staff is absolutely wonderful. Cannot say enough bad things about my experiences with the owner of the place. Unless he thinks you are rich, he will be condescending to you. He also thinks he's God's gift to wine. I recently was speaking to a neighbor about this place and he also had a very similar experience. I cannot say enough positive things about his staff. They are all incredibly nice and knowledgeable. My favorite wine shop! A true boutique wine shop, where you know each bottle is good because each bottle has been hand-picked by the owner, Victor. Victor and everyone else who works at Vienna Vintner are extremely knowledgeable about wine in general but also about each specific bottle in the shop. If you tell them what kind of wine you like and your price-range, they will point you to specific bottles in the shop that will suit your palate and your budget. We have not been disappointed yet! Victor also has a few of his own blends, which are amazing! Finally, the atmosphere of this place is just so charming -- it's an old stone house with a big fireplace in the tasting room, where they hold free tastings on Fridays and Saturdays; the stairs that lead up to another tasting room are made out of old wine boxes, and I just love those little details! This is our go-to spot for wine! During the stay-at-home orders, they are offering curbside pickup for cases of wine. If you tell them what you like and if you want a box or reds or whites, they will hand-pick an assortment of wines for you (and be able to tell you everything about each wine) for curbside pickup. These guys are the real deal. Earlier this year, my fiancé and I went to Fiola Mare in Georgetown for dinner and had this amazing slightly sweet, effervescent wine. We took a photo of the bottle and went into a wine shop near us to find a similar wine. The staff recommended a wine to us, but it was nothing like what we experienced at Fiola Mare. We were obviously very disappointed. Fast forward to this past Saturday. We were around Vienna for a late lunch and some errands, and we popped by for fun. We perused the shelves of various wines before we settled on the 2016 Venge Vineyards Scout's Honor Red. After picking that out, we asked one of the staff members if he could recommend a wine that was similar to the one we had at Fiola Mare. As soon as we began describing that wine, he began walking towards the other side of the store. He told us that a birbet sounded ideal and recommended one. It was a very good sign when Victor, the owner, also agreed that a birbet would fulfill our criteria. We bought both and took them home. That night, we had the birbet after chilling it in the fridge for a couple of hours. And oh my goodness, it was EXACTLY what we were looking for. It was slightly sparkling and sweet. Lovely floral notes and fruity/sweet flavors. It went perfectly with some pastries and chocolates we had. Additionally, the Scout's Honor Red was a fantastic wine. It was a very well-rounded red that goes well with seafood. We later found out that it received a 90 on Wine Enthusiast, so it's clearly beloved by the experts. All in all, we are so glad to have found Vienna Vintner. It can be difficult finding knowledgeable and friendly people who know their wines and can recommend the right wines at the right price points. Victor and his team are the dream team for wines, and we will not hesitate to go back to them for all our wine needs from now on. read more

I held another event at Vienna Vintner. They are so fabulous and easy to work with, this the second time we've used the venue, and we love it. I don't know where to start - Victor, John, Mary and the gang were incredibly welcoming and made us feel at home. The wines they selected for our event were absolutely perfect. Not only did they oversee the wines, they kept an eye on the food and moving food up and down depending on where the crowd moved. It is such a gorgeous location - a lovingly and detailed restoration and beautiful natural plantings out front. The Vienna Vintner was the site of a friend's 60th birthday party and Victor, Kyle and John went all out to make it a fantastic evening. A New World-Old World comparative tasting for ten was held upstairs in the lovely room with the long wooden table and chairs. (I wouldn't call it a conference room or a dining room, although both could be conducted there very comfortably.) The set up was elegant, the wines were wonderful, and the service (with Kyle describing and pouring wines) was flawless. I couldn't recommend this shop more highly for both its wine selection and as a venue for special/fun events. read more

Cute shop and easy to find, the main focus of course is the wine but they also boast a small shelf space between wine cabinets of hard to find craft beers. This is the local place to go for wine tasting, which they offer at the back of the store at a large wooden bar on Fridays and Saturdays. I've seen them set up with at least 4 different wines to taste and usually a light cheese or cracker that compliments whatever they are pouring for the cleansing of the palette. And this is complimentary, you don't pay a dime... Well until you taste that delicious bottle of wine that you'll have a hard time walking away from. Wine sells itself honestly, good service helps but the staff really know their wines, so they pick great bottles that many will enjoy. I wish they had a bigger craft beer section, but the one they do have is all about quality not quantity. The prices are fair too, pretty impressive for a wine shop. I wonder if they ever do beer tastings!? That would make me a repeat customer weekly. ;) read more

Although I didn't ask any questions concerning wines, one could tell that the owner had knowledge concerning the wines which were selected for the tasting. In addition, he was spot on in regards to the chocolate truffles which I couldn't resist at the counter. In regards to the store itself, this is a small store; however, the selection is vast. It took me many months of knowing about the Vienna Vintner, but I finally got around to visiting a few weeks ago--and I am glad I did. A wine shop of this caliber is usually to be found only in a more urban environment. Living in western Fairfax County, small specialty shops are rare, inadequate, or both. Vienna Vintner changes that equation for me. And now I don't feel I have to drive into the city (D.C.) to buy great, noble wines that are not overpriced; I just have to drive to Vienna. Another reviewer notes the "eclectic" selection and that is true--in fact, it's the reason I immediately loved this place. These guys really know what they're doing and buy wines that are not wines that you can buy at just any ol' wine shop or grocery store. Let's face it: any wine buyer can buy the mass-produced labels (brands) that makes super fruity/high oak/high alcohol & sugar wines and watch them fly off the shelves because those wines appeal to the masses. But it takes real passion and knowledge to build the kind of inventory one can find at Vienna Vintner. I respect that kind of dedication and I am glad to have found a wine store where I can rely on the owner(s) to find great new wines that are well priced, and which I would not have known about otherwise. I love this shop. The owner knows everything about wine. He travels everywhere to purchase and sample new wines--Europe, South America, the West Coast, everywhere. As other posters mentioned, the owner, as well as the other staff members are really helpful in choosing wines to go with certain foods or wines with certain flavors. Customers can really trust recommendations made in this store! I have purchased several wines there, all by recommendations of staff, and they were all perfect for the occasion. There is something for every budget in this store too, which is important since wine can get very expensive. The workers there can recommend good varieties at various price ranges. This is just a bonus, but the store is very conveniently located--this is really helpful when planning a dinner with guests! It's right beside Walgreens, three banks, and three grocery stores, so I usually stop here last with cash in hand when I've already purchased the food I'll be serving. read more

I don't have a lot to compare this to in the area, but I did notice some of their prices were a little off. Some bottles were a few dollars more than what I typically see for the same bottle at other wine shops, like a Picpoul de Pinet that was $3 more (nearly a %30 increase) than what I've seen it priced at elsewhere. read more

Stopped in for the first time on a Saturday wine tasting. I picked up some wines 6, 3 red 3 white. The first white which all of were picked from the owner was merely ok and not a great Chardonnay that I was expecting. The second was horrendous and still sits in the fridge as we will probably cook with it. I am almost dreading opening up the rest but will update this posting in the future. I spent close to $100 in wine and extremely disappointed thus far. Update. Made it thru three of the Chardonnay wines which I asked for them to pick out. I would of done better blind folded picking out wines at Trader Joe's and would of spent Less money. Ugh. Horrible wines thank you very much. read more

I am the first to admit that I am not an expert, but finding the right bottle(s) of wine to go with a special dinner is easy here. What makes it easy is the owner who always asks what we are serving, how many people, and what I had in mind. He will then show me what he has in two or three price ranges options. He has never let me down! Wine shops can be intimidating but he will put you at ease, and give you some education so you can talk at your party like you know what you are talking about with your friends. Victor really does try to match his wines to your needs and within your price range. He's never once exceeded my limit on wine selection. But price alone doesn't tell the whole story. My wife and I both come here on Saturdays for the awesome wine tastings. The Vienna Vintner recently hosted a wine tasting event for the Vienna Arts Society. That evening featured Austrian wines imported by a local distributor. What an amazing surprise. The wines were delicious and so reasonably priced, every guest went home with at least one bottle of Ruttenstock Gruner Veltliner. I took home a case! The Vienna Vintner is such a treasure in our town. First, as you walk in, this is not a typical wine store.....this one takes your breath away. If I could live at the Vintner I would. The selection is excellent and price points are absolutely spot on reasonable. Visualize Vienna Vintner as a juxtaposition of the barely structured chaos of Pearsons with sterile safety of Best Cellar. The selection is eclectic but well organized; you can see all the bottles without the need to pick one up. I am surprised I haven't found this wine store before. It is a gem in the DC area. I got a chance to have a a long conversation with the person working tonight. They work with a lot of smaller wineries that I have not seen in other stores. They have also started beer tastings and will be adding beer to their store, though I hope it doesn't take away from the wine selections. There are less budget wines than other places, but with smaller wineries it is a given. Just look at any Virginia wineries. It isn't impossible, but it is hard to find something below $10. I am looking forward to a long relationship with this store exploring new wines. read more
