Jutta makes the highest quality sandals (none of the beautiful brass nails have wiggled their way out and the leather hasn't dried out or cracked after years of wear and no oiling or conditioning on my part). She stands behind her product (after you've stretched out the straps your first season of wearing them in, she will disassemble them, tighten and trim the leather, and reassemble) And her prices for add-ons are fair (she will resole them once you've worn the leather too far with elegant thin rubber soles that don't detract from the sandal style and even adds a little heel piece since heels often wear fastest, for only $35 last I checked). Jutta is proof that impeccable service and quality products make for happy customers and referrals. I can't tell you how many people to whom I've raved about Jutta. So much free publicity! She is proof that buying local is worth it and that you will be rewarded with years of use for spending a little extra money on something handmade instead of something cheap from a factory. And if you're used to paying designer prices it's no more expensive! After admiring their handbags for months, I bought one of the fabric and leather bags at the end of September. Less than two weeks after purchase, the fabric appeared discolored after I got caught in a very light rain/mist. I gently tried to clean it using a toothbrush and water. The discoloration grew. When I took the bag back to the store, the owner blamed me for trying to clean the bag. I told her I thought a $450 handbag should be more durable. She told me care instructions were on a website that she tells all customers about. However, she never mentioned a website to me and when I pointed that out, she once again blamed me -- it was my fault for not asking if there was a website. Huh? I'm going to try to get a refund directly from my credit card company. I'm totally frustrated by this experience as I want to support small businesses and female entrepreneurs, but this was a terrible experience. Poor quality product, terrible customer service. Concerned about the longevity of this cute shop.

And this happened twice! The first time around, I expected what would be a normal, adequate response: that they would refund or exchange the bag. Not so! Instead, I spent three weeks bringing my bag back into the store (one time having to wait an hour for the store to open because they happened to be late that day), awaiting feedback/response from them, and waiting for it to be sent out to their "specialists". After this lengthy process, they said they would have the bag cleaned and cover the cost (umm, shouldn't that be a given??). They then came back and said the discoloration was from denim, and suggested I stay away from wearing the bag with jeans (which I wear every day). The extremely unhelpful manager told me to "have fun with the bag! wear it with your dresses and skirts!". Unhappily, I took the bag back, and after a few weeks of being scared to take it out of the dust bag, decided to give it another go. I wore it one day with a white dress (devoid of any color, just in case). The next day, I wore it with a light grey cotton dress. And low and behold, that evening I noticed staining on the bag! I once again reached out to the store, and the response I got was essentially the same as before "Every bag that is purchased from our store has a leather care card inside for guidelines regarding light-colored bags, and dyes having the potential to crock onto them. Additionally, we have further instructions on our website for care and maintenance. We address care instructions with purchase due to this potential crocking being increased with a white bag. This is the nature of a white item's affinity to coloration." So basically: I cannot wear this bag with jeans. I cannot wear it with dresses. My question for Kempton & Co. is, what can I wear it with!? Do yourself a favor: avoid this store. They have cute, unique style but the quality is abysmal and the customer service even worse.

I went there, not really knowing what to expect, but having heard rave reviews of the collaboration of the designers at Melissa Shoes and Vivienne Westwood, I was really excited. The sample sale space was a bit smaller than expected and was very crowded (I did go on the Friday evening of the sale). The plus was that the prices on a number of the shoes and flats had come down to $20/pair from whatever price they had been at and the accessories and bags started at $30. I tried on a number of the closed toe-flats and sandals. I found that the sizes tended to run small, so I picked a size 9 in the sandals (by Melissa) and a size 10 in the closed toe Vivienne Westwood gladiator shoes. Both shoes ran me $20/ pair. I also considered getting a handbag for $30, but they were out of the handbag in black, so I decided against that. The fact that the shoes are plastic does take a bit of getting used to (and my feet feel it!), but I like the fact that the shoes are eco-friendly recycled plastic. I will report back on how they stand up the the wear and tear of Manhattan!

The bags are very sturdy, and the craftsmanship is solid. I love the different colors, textures and fabrics he uses so I can find one that best suits my taste. David was very engaging, flexible and patient as I took a while to decide on one for myself and my boyfriend, even though we needed an exchange for my boyfriend because he ended up wanting the black calfskin leather solo instead. I also love the separation in the solo bag so I know where it slip my phone in and where to put my keys and wallet whereas when I am using my lululemon waist bag, my things seem to be in a disarray everywhere. Highly recommend the solo bag. I also love the concept of when you own a solo bag, you're part of the solo community. How would I be able to choose? The craftsmanship and beauty of each SOLO SLING is unique. I closed my eyes and asked if they would choose for me. They chose the COGNAC SOLO SLING which is a warm, rich brownish, amber-ish (like a rust). It's lovely! I use/wear my COGNAC SOLO SLING everyday...it is a part of me and quickly becomes a part of whatever I am wearing...SO perhaps the SOLO SLING could be marketed as an extension of ourselves...a part that's solo but still belongs to something greater...perhaps?
