I had a hankering for a good gyro, so actively sought this place out after seeing it on Yelp. It was decent. Located in the Nisky shopping center, Broken Plate occupies the former location of a popular restaurant called Salt'n'Vinegar. It has been open for about two years, and has a mostly local clientele. The parking lot of the mall was packed with cars, even during morning. Daria was our hostess/waitress and was informative throughout. The lunch menu is not available until 11am, so had to order items off of the breakfast menu. Most things are a la carte. Pistachio Crusted French Toast ($14) - One large piece of stuffed french toast, cut diagonally. Described as 'stuffed with honey, vanilla, pistachio cream, topped with berries and powdered sugar'. The berries were fresh blueberries. I stole a bite, and it was delicious. It didn't need syrup. Gyro breakfast ($18) - the meat is described as lamb doner, but it had not been prepared from a rotating spit. Instead, the meat was a good representation of food service gyro meat, reheated on a grill...which considering where we were, was pretty good. The plate included any 2 eggs, so got it scrambled soft and it was prepared well. The breakfast doesn't come with Tzatziki, which was an extra $2. It came with pita bread, and thinly sliced peppers and onions. It ended up being a satisfying gyro sandwich. My brother continued to shoot the breeze with our waitress while I finished my gyro. She recommended some places to get whole fried fish, which is what the area is famous for. The bill came and that's when I realized there is no sales tax in the USVI. Payment was easy, and because it uses USD, was able to use a CC that doesn't waive foreign transaction fees.

Everyone had their favorite dish, and I ended up going with the Street Beet Salad with falafel. I loved how all of the ingredients came together and tasted super delicious! This was one of the more creative items on the menu, but there are also a good bit of classic Mediterranean dishes to choose from as well. Overall I don't think you can go wrong with anything here. The locals clearly love this hidden gem and I can 100% see why. I found the price point to be really reasonable, especially considering the quality of the food and the size of the portion. I will say it wasn't even that expensive for mainland food which I really appreciated. The woman taking orders was very kind and easy to talk to. It seems like there are three women in the truck cooking and taking orders, and doing an amazing job! People waiting in line are also friendly and happy to rave about this place. I will 100% need to come back before this trip ends

Our server walked us through the menu and special options. It's $100 per person and you get to choose three courses each, one app, one starter, and one entree. I liked the way they managed their menu as you had several choices in each category as opposed to prix fixe where everything is chosen for you. Some of the specials did require an up charge. I chose the fried calamari, the spinach salad, and filet mignon. Everything was delicious. The calamari portion was huge. I only could eat about half. The spinach salad was actually mixed greens as they hadn't gotten their spinach shipment in yet (island life). It came topped with popcorn, a unique option that was quite good. The filet was cooked perfectly. It was so tender and had a nice rich sauce over the top. It came with asparagus and potatoes. Husband got the duck, gnocchi, and mahi mahi. His meal was excellent as well. I got to taste everything. I kind of wish we would have had a dessert option instead of an app.

We were immediately and graciously greeted by our hostess/server/bartender all-in-one Tiffany. She had the most charismatic personality and smile. I loved her energy! She explained the menu to us first timers and she even brought us complimentary drinks to try! The menu basically featured an array of proteins (chicken, shrimp, wings, salmon, etc) and sauces (jerk, creole, teriyaki, and the special shama sauce) you can pair it with. Sadly they no longer serve curry goat and they were out of oxtail the day we went. Each order also comes with choice of 2 sides. I ordered the jerk salmon with side of rice and peas and plantains. My salmon was perfectly cooked and seasoned. I loved the slightly peppery spice from the jerk seasoning. The plantains were delicious. The rice was a little dry for my taste but went well with my salmon. My fiancé got the wings in shama sauce and this was SO GOOD. Would recommend. He also got a massive portion order of macaroni and cheese. They definitely make sure you don't leave hungry here. My friend got the shrimp and it was nicely seasoned as well. Prices were very reasonable for the portion. Everything was so plentiful! I had enough leftovers for a second meal. The only reason I can't give this 5 stars is the ambiance. The decor is very bare bone and feels like much more of a take out place than somewhere you would go for a nice lunch. There's also two TVs and they blast the sound here which can be very distracting when your group is trying to have a conversation. The bathroom could also use some TLC. Otherwise, the service and food was definitely a 5 stars experience for me. Would gladly return next time I'm in Saint Thomas!

When we mentioned we were heading to St. John's, they happily packed dinner for us to take along. And when I came down with something one evening, Sally went out of her way to make me a fresh lime juice with mint to help me feel better. That kind of care is rare. The food was consistently excellent, and they've struck a great balance authentic Indian flavors that both Indians and non-Indians will enjoy. I especially loved their Chana curry (Chole) and Dal Makhanni. A quick note on the prices: we saw a few reviews complaining, but when we tried cooking one of our own meals during the trip, we realized just how expensive groceries are on the island. Given that, the pricing here feels completely fair. We'll be back.
