Omgggggg how is this my first time trying Gladys' food even though i have been coming to the island for 3 years now. We went for lunch and were seated right away. The staff is nice and attentive. The place is really cute in an alley that is very picturesque. We got the ox tail, curry chicken, jerk wings and jerk chicken sandwich and everything was absolutely delicious. I have no words. The jerk chicken sandwich was very flavorful, fries were crispy. Curry chicken was one of the best on the island. Fell of the bone good. Friends loved the ox tail and jerk wings. We weren't too hungry when we stopped here, but we knew we had to at least try some unique items. Lots of tourists here, but there's plenty of seating so we didn't have to wait. Service was okay overall. We got some simple drinks as well, which were flavorful and refreshing. We tried the Fungi w/ Creole Sauce and Kalaloo Soup. We both really enjoyed the kalaloo soup and were trying to find it again throughout our trip. The fungi was interesting. Not our favorite thing, but it was still worth trying. We stopped by the Visitor Center in Charolette Amalie and I asked for a recommendation for a restaurant that servers Caribbean food, and this is the restaurant that was recommended. It was a bit hard to find as it is located down a very narrow alley, not on a Main Street, but we eventually found it. We ate at this restaurant for lunch on a weekday. A local told us the restaurant has been in business for 50 years so obviously it is doing something right. Immediately upon entering the vibe was New Orleans. The walls are stone and look like they date from the 1600s when the Dutch founded the city. It was a step back in history. It's very comfortable feel. We started with a mango colada (me) and papaya colada (wife) and both were sweet and tasted great on a humid day. The menu has Caribbean dishes but at the end the wife did not order the Oxtail and I did not order the jerk chicken. I was a bit afraid that it would be too hot. She went with a stuffed avocado with tuna fish and I opted for a fried grouper filet. She liked her stuffed avocado very much and it was a very full salad of vegetables. My fish was perfectly fried and the fish was both tender and moist. It came with rice with beans as one side and cabbage with carrots as a second side. Both side dishes were delicious. I was stuffed after lunch. Our server was friendly and helpful. The food came out in a reasonable amount of time. If we have time, I would like to return and try their jerk chicken. read more

Stopped by here for breakfast while exploring the area. I got the western omelette which sounded delicious. It had ham, cheese, peppers, onions, and mushrooms. Also came with a side of potatoes and toast. Visually, the plate looked very appealing but I must say there was no flavor. They provided salt and pepper for the table so I had to season everything. The plate also came with some cabbages, carrots, and 2 slices of plantain. Jerk wings (6 piece) had some great kick to it. Well marinated so the chicken actually has flavor rather than just the sauce. Kalaloo Soup (bowl) was slightly different from what we expected but quite delicious overall. We enjoyed the vegetables and beef in the soup. Bush Tea was strongly lemongrass flavor with hints of basil Service: 5/5 - everyone was really friendly and we had no issues as service was quick even though the restaurant was packed. Ambiance: 5/5 - the lighting is a bit dim but it felt quite homey with paintings on the wall and exposed brick masonry. After an awesome wedding weekend, the bridal party and family stopped here as a send off for the newlyweds. We had a party of 11 and they got tables together for us quickly. Gladys' can be a little hard to find. It's down an alley off the main shopping street. This spacious, inviting restaurant was delicious. We had two servers for our group. One was much more attentive than the other. We looked up and half our group had drinks and ordered food. We didn't even have water. This led to a portion of the group finishing much earlier than we did. They have a full bar, we had signature drinks, refreshing lemonades and bourbon w/ginger beer. Food wise, we had a bit of everything. Crowd favorites were the oxtails (so good), jerk chicken, lobster and avocado salad and brown stew chicken. The cabbage and rice and peas were great. The only major disappointment was the fried snapper. It was VERY fishy and strong in flavor. This is one of our favorite dishes and whenever it's available, we get it. I have never had it taste this way. We chose not it eat it, but paid for it. The icing on the cake was the bottled hot sauce to take home. I snagged the passion fruit hot sauce and can't wait to use it. If you're in St. Thomas, swing by and have a hearty, flavorful meal. read more

There aren't many choices in Charlotte Amalie. Diamond stores take up most retail spaces. Gladys' was recommended by a local and we're glad we went. Gladys is such a cozy little gem tucked away in one of the alleys off Main Street. It's the kind of place you might walk past if you're not paying attention. It was really flavorful, tender, and fell right off the bone no toughness or chewiness at all. The rice that came with it complimented it really well. The plate also came with plantains, which were sweet and packed with flavor, definitely a highlight. Gladys' Cafe is a cozy, family-owned spot tucked off Main Street. We stopped in for a quick breakfast while waiting for nearby stores to open. I had the 2-egg breakfast plate along with a Bahama Mama--simple, tasty, and reasonably priced. The next day, we originally planned to try a different restaurant, but it was closed so back to Gladys' we went. This time, I ordered the Oxtail Special. It was definitely good, but at $36 (as you'll see in the photo below), it felt a bit overpriced. Overall, the food and atmosphere were enjoyable. It's a great local option in a central location. This was probably the only place we like out of all the restaurants we went to. The price was decent and the food was actually good. The service was good. We came on two different occasion. One time it was pretty busy and every table was full. Portion was good as well. We stick to the lunch special. This seems to be a local favorite as it was recommended a few times, and I see why. My niece and I ordered the curry goat, stewed chicken, and jerk wings. Starting with the curry goat, that was some of the best curry goat I ever had, and I had a lot of it. The sides (rice and peas, cabbage) were pretty basic. The stewed chicken was alright. It didn't have a ton of depth of flavor like I'm used to from a stewed chicken. Lastly, the jerk wings were fried and had jerk sauce added, which wasn't what I was expecting, but the sauce was ok. Gladys' is a cozy Cafe, nestled in the heart of downtown Charlotte Amelie across from the gorgeous waterfront. But if it's your 1st time here, be prepared to go on a hunt to find this place. It's located in an alleyway like many of the other restaurants and businesses in this area.. and there are MANY alleyways lol..every local that I asked for directions sent me up the wrong alley..tried calling Gladys' several times for directions after going up 2 wrong alleys, but got NO answer.. Anyhow, after finally finding it and arriving to pick up my food, there was no hostess at the booth. One of the female bartenders at the bar asked how she can be of assistance only after making eye contact with me 3x's, minutes after I arrived, I told her I was picking up..she then disappeared in the back and reappeared a few minutes later without communicating anything to me..I had to trek to the bar to inquire on what was going on.. These employees need to communicate better with customers. Anywho, they serve up some extremely delicious carribean style food. Got the jerk chicken breast and stew chicken meal..no disappointment there! The food was good!! Prices are a bit steep though, but it is Downtown Charlotte Amelie, across from the waterfront so I guess that's expected..this is a high traffic tourist area! I'd return here on my next visit to USVI but will opt for dine in instead. read more

Didn't like the sides that came with it, so I ordered a side of veggies. HORRIBLE!!! Greasy cabbage and hunks of carrots! I was so mad to see I paid an additional $8 for it!!! Taste like that old grandma that didn't know how to cook food!!! I don't know how you can mess fish and vegetables up that bad!!!!!!!!! My husband did enjoy his curry goat! One of my favorite things to do is to enjoy local cuisine when I travel. While researching St Thomas I had my eye on Gladys Cafe. The recommendation from my cabbie sealed the deal. Hubby had the lunch special, curry chicken with peas and rice (rice and beans) and veggies of cabbage, zucchini and carrots. I opted for the oxtails in gravy with peas and rice. Our server was absolutely wonderful and the food was excellent. My oxtails were tender, so tender they could be eaten with a fork. And very flavorful without being overdone or salty. Located in this historic alleyway that dates back to the 1600s this place was amazing in every way The service from the get-go was phenomenal. Everyone was so welcoming and ear to assist and help out. The restaurant itself was clean and modern, but still nostalgic. I had the best banana daiquiri I've had in my entire life. So good that I had to have three and still come back for more. Had the fried fish and the grits and it was amazing. They have a lot of local favorites which unfortunately we didn't get to try. We came here when we were exploring the downtown Charlotte Amalie area, and this was one of my favorite local restaurants. We sat at the bar and Pamela was so amazing. We wanted to try some local cuisine so we got the conch fritters, kalaloo soup, and fungi in creole sauce. The conch fritters were super light and crispy, not really very "seafoody", the kalaloo soup was like a collard greens soup with some ham in it, and the fungi I really don't know how to explain except it was kind of similar texture to a tamale and had the maíz flavor. Pamela recommended the curry for something local but we were full after trying what we did. We also ordered a Bushwacker and rum pump and they were heavy pours and delicious. We were walking around looking for somewhere to eat. A guy on the street told us to go to Gladys'. From where we were, it said go to the 3rd alley down and so we did. We walked in and were greeted. Our waitress was amazing. She was new to the restaurant. We had ordered our drinks and were told that the food is cooked fresh to order. My brother and I ordered the curried goat.
