I'm gluten free so I struggled a tad, but overall zero complaints. This place is great! I can't rave enough about the homemade ricotta. We ordered it with honeycomb. Worth it. Trust me. We split the arugula salad and the catch of the day for our meal. Catch of the day turned out to be swordfish. It was cooked so perfectly. The bartenders make lots of delicious treats - some of them being assorted cellos - we tried the lemon cello and the chocolate cello. So good!! The setting, in St John in January and the weather is perfect. What a perfect small island with the nicest, friendliest people. This is a great restaurant. 3 of us had reservations for the bar, which is a huge plus, since you can order ala carte. The bar tender, Jena is a mistro and so fun to watch, I love a good bartender. For the food my wife and I shared. This was like day 6 already on holiday and I must admit I was full from all we've eaten all week long. We shared the confit duck leg, oh so good, Prince Edward Island mussels in a delicious sauce, argula salad and the Cioppino, with Caribbean lobster, gulf shrimp and mussels in a tomato broth. I would have love this over pasta and called a day. The focaccia to dip in the sauce was pretty damn good. Unfortunately, I was to stuffed for desert, I did have an oreo back at the Westin. Great place for a romantic dinner. It's cozy, mood-lit, outdoor vibe is a perfect dinner spot. You are well taken care of upon entering. We had a reservation and were seated immediately. Our server walked us through the menu and special options. It's $100 per person and you get to choose three courses each, one app, one starter, and one entree. I liked the way they managed their menu as you had several choices in each category as opposed to prix fixe where everything is chosen for you. Some of the specials did require an up charge. I chose the fried calamari, the spinach salad, and filet mignon. Everything was delicious. The calamari portion was huge. I only could eat about half. The spinach salad was actually mixed greens as they hadn't gotten their spinach shipment in yet (island life). It came topped with popcorn, a unique option that was quite good. The filet was cooked perfectly. It was so tender and had a nice rich sauce over the top. It came with asparagus and potatoes. Husband got the duck, gnocchi, and mahi mahi. Where do I even begin with this place? I would return to St. John just for this restaurant, it was that incredible. The service was warm and attentive, but the real showstopper was the food. We started with the calamari, which were lightly fried, fresh, and perfectly tender, none of that rubbery texture you sometimes get. But the absolute highlight of the night was the mushroom pappardelle. The sauce was rich, earthy, and downright addictive, easily one of the top five pasta dishes I've ever had in my life. The house-made pappardelle was so fresh and cooked perfectly al dente. For the third course, I went with another pasta (after nearly a week without any, I was craving it!), opting for the shrimp pasta and adding a 2 oz Caribbean lobster tail for an extra $20. The lobster was melt-in-your-mouth tender, almost buttery in texture. The shrimp were average, but the pasta again was outstanding, perfectly al dente with a sauce accented by real Pecorino Romano. Just divine. They start you off with three slices of Portuguese sweet bread that were pillowy soft, like eating bread made of clouds. I also had a mocktail made with passion fruit, ginger, and lime, bright, refreshing, and a must-try. For the Mrs birthday we went to our fave restaurant in St John and it did not disappoint. They have moved to a price fixe menu which includes starter, second plate, and main course. Great choices on all three. My wife had the made in house ricotta while I had the calamari, both were awesome. Both of us had the mushroom Pappardelle which was so good, layers of rich savory flavors. The Mrs had the filet mignon while I opted for the short rib. Once again, so good. Extra Virgin Bistro is very conveniently located in a wonderful spot that's very close to the Cruz Bay ferry. We stopped here for dinner, and had a wonderfully relaxed and delicious meal. We shared three entrées and a dessert. For our entrées, we had the seared tuna special (excellent!), the six-hour braised beef short rib (hearty, delicious, and beautifully presented), and we both completely LOVED the uber-flavorful cheese ravioli :-) Our dessert was a wonderful apple crisp, and we both enjoyed two very strong and tasty Grapefruit margaritas with our meal. The bar was fun and we had great conversations with other diners. I had the house made ricotta. It was delicious with the honey and sweet corn. The perfect balance of salty and sweet. I also had the wild mushroom pappardelle. It was so rich and the pasta was perfectly cooked. For my next course, I had the confit duck leg. The duck was tender and flavorful. It is difficult to pick one specific restaurant in Saint John as the very best, but if you had to Extra Virgin Bistro would definitely be one of those! As always, Everything here is perfect. My Service, my food, even the drinks are special. Myself and my family combined have ordered probably 80% of the items in the menu and nobody has ever complained. Not cheap, but let's face it, you're not going to find a place that's not expensive in St John. Most people that come to St John go there because number one you don't want a busy place such as St Thomas. People pay for location. We were really looking forward to a special dinner where my daughter took me for a special birthday together. Just the two of us. Both of us are foodies. I started with the calamari and she started with the house made whipped ricotta. The calamari didn't even taste like it was fried. The potato puree, and white balsamic reduction, it was just all melded together. It was very lightly fried and the sauce was wonderful. Very nicely done. My daughter was sure what to get between the burette and the ricotta and our great server suggested the ricotta. So she got the ricotta which was served with portobello mushrooms and a corn mixture with crostini. She enjoyed it and thought it was quite good. I then had a special, which was A SCALLOP done with corn mixture that was really to die for. Yes, it was one scallop that was seared perfectly. Again, something about what it was in, was done to perfection. So good. The scallop was tall and I cut it into 6 slices and each bite was delicious. Big thumbs up on this one. She had the mushroom pappardelle and really enjoyed it. Although these servings were quite small, they are in-depth in flavor and we found them very satisfying. The main courses didn't fair quite as well. I got the short ribs based on many incredible reviews right here on yelp. I found it to be too fatty. Perhaps this is my fault for choosing this cut? I would not recommend it at all. The polenta was great and the carrots were tasty and crunchy. Missing the mark on the short ribs is a biggie for me. I brought it home so someone else can eat it tomorrow. I was going to bring it home regardless, because the first two courses were great. My daughter got the 5 ounce fillet, and thought it was fine. Cooked perfectly. She also brought it home. We ate the basic 3 course with no lobster, or pate, or honeycomb add-on at all. Our main comment was "this is not a $100 meal." Not a good value at all for the price. Also, although our waiters were friendly, I felt they were pushing those add-ons a bit too hard. After a week, I can conclude St. John has 3 levels of restaurant- none of which are negative, just a tailored experience. There is the local/day to day - fabulous places for a quick local bite, there are nice restaurants where the tourists go - and we went to several and all were good - and then the bars/pizza etc - all OK Then there is one restaurant that occupies the fine dining space - fine dining does not have to be stuffy - that is not what i am talking about - fine dining is about precision, execution, passion, love for food and an insistence on a standard. Extra Virgin sits in this category alone. Yes it's more expensive than the others, yes it's hard to get a reservation, but it's not impossible. I will say that i have been to some other fine dining places - like French Laundry, Per Se (Michelin places) - and this place definitely belongs in that neighborhood , Greeted perfectly and warmly and taken to our table - the place is island nice, but the energy is there - the staff like to be here, the patrons are excited to be here - everyone knows what's ahead. It's not pressed, it's not fake....it's palpable that good things are coming Drinks are precise, well thought out and crafted. Wine list is very accessible at all levels. The bar is really cool here - takes the middle of the restaurant, good crowd and it's not small like most other places. Noise level is not quiet - but you can hear each other. It's a 3 course menu for price fixe.....and it's hard to make up your mind. Enhancements are not unreasonable and they make sense. Oysters Casino were the special app - really delicate and nice. Ricotta was like a cool little cheeseboard, Burrata was a masterpiece....The bites were substantial, crafted, well seasoned, not requiring more, and balanced. A honeycomb enhancement brought out the flavor of the ricotta, which was served on a purposeful crostini. Second course- mushroom pappardelle was the star. Homemade, handcrafted, the pasta had the perfect chew, the mushrooms played along in perfect tandem.....it was a bite where your eyes shut involuntarily. There was an arugula salad that was nice and sausage and herb gnocchi that was a subtle, understated dish that was able to fly. Entrees - as if you were not full enough at this point - here comes more art. The catch was a mahi that was lovingly bathed in a coconut something or another, perfectly paired with accompaniment. Fettuccine was great, the Filet was a masterpiece. Since we are gluttons for punishment we did dessert - Espresso Martinis, coffee, ice cream and an apple crisp that was warm and succulent. My family has been going to St. John for years. My dad has been here over 30 times and my sisters and I started going when we were infants. We have always passed extra virgin bistro, but never tried it. We decided we would try it as our last night dinner and boy were we IMPRESSED. There are several spots on the island that are great, but this was impeccable. The food, the atmosphere, the attentiveness, the service, our server, our drinks, and the EXPERIENCE. Truly a 10/10 experience. Every dish was a taste sensation in your mouth. Every drink was better than the last. This is a must! We are headed back in 2025 and we will be back to Extra Virgin. This was a great place to cap off our last night in St. John. If you want to order a la carte you can sit at the bar. The tables where we sat had a prix fixe menu. The service was outstanding and the atmosphere was relaxed. The pork belly and duck leg were perfectly cooked. I ordered the wild mushroom papardelle which was delicious and my spouse got the sausage and herb gnocchi which made him happy (he is a little suspicious of food that he can't identify) but he was wowed by the papardelle. The food here is outstanding. Our server was outstanding, just felt at ease which is not always easy with a larger party. This is not a cheap meal but you're gonna get quality and taste with a lovey ambience. We had burrata, ricotta and fried calamari. The latter two were my favorite with the ricotta having a sweet fruity accompaniment and the calamari being light and fresh. My dish was Osso Bucco with a polenso tender and flavorful. The pastas are all made in house and on the menu is appetizer size that you can increase for double the price. I had a delicious spicy tequila cocktail that hit the spot. And I had a bite of the ricotta cheesecake. I love cheesecake but this may be one of the best cheesecake I've ever had. We had dinner here last night, 6/25/21. The food was excellent as were the waitstaff. One thing to consider; the main course servings are huge, so splitting one for two hungry folks would be reasonable. Especially if you have an appetizer or salad to start. We shared 2 appetizers between the five of us (the gnocchi...delicious, and their special ravioli-like appetizer, also awesome). I was a bit concerned about the short rib being smoked, as I get plenty of BBQ back in Texas and was not in the mood for it, but I also had been eating fish all week and was ready for a change.
