A PERFECT SPOT -- ESPECIALLY FOR PARENTS TRAVELING WITH LITTLE ONES! We were staying at the hotel and ended up coming to Wissota Chophouse almost every single day because it was that good. I was traveling with my two-year-old, and the entire staff could not have been kinder or more accommodating. They immediately brought her crayons and a coloring page every visit, and made us feel so welcome -- which any parent knows is priceless when you're on the road. Their daily happy hour from 4-6 is truly unmatched: half-off wine and drafts (yes please!), and the vibes are relaxed and friendly. My daughter and I were both completely obsessed with the truffle fries and the bread and butter -- honestly some of the best we've had anywhere. Obviously they're known for their amazing steak but everything we tried was delicious, fresh, and felt like such a treat without being stuffy. A special shoutout to the manager, who is incredibly sweet and made sure every visit felt personal. Between the food, the service, and how family-friendly it is, this spot became the highlight of our stay. If you're in Ottumwa- especially if you're staying at the hotel- you have to go. Wissota Chophouse is a little fancier than I usually go for, but it might be just right for you. The staff was great, super friendly, and even the manager came over to chat for a bit. The place has a really nice upscale vibe. The outdoor seating has fire pits and heaters, and inside there's a gorgeous bar setup. We had drinks, fried alligator bites, and truffle fries. The drinks were amazing, and the food was good, though it could use a little fine-tuning. Overall, a nice spot if you're looking for something a bit more upscale. read more

In town for business or just driving through, you must stop! The service was impeccable, the food was off the chart amazingly flavorful. We had a hard time deciding what to get. I was excited to try this restaurant. We had talked about it for a while but finally decided to pay the prices to give it a try. The staff were friendly, the ambiance was modern and nice. To start we ordered the mushrooms and the menu was a little deceiving. It listed the ingredients but it didn't mention the quality. It definitely was ground wagyu with sausage. The cheese was not what I was expecting. With the price of the meal I had expected high quality melted cheese and not thin ribbons of cold cheese. It left the flavor lacking. The butter was over whipped leaving it lacking in flavor, the salt wasn't as high end as I was expecting for the price point and put directly on 1/2 the butter. I was thinking more along the lines of Maldon salt and placed on the side. I was also expecting dense bread but it was highly processed bread with gas pockets that left the bread very light and thin. I was still in high hopes of the Ribeye that was priced at $60 à la carte. I thought the serving of the steak knives was a little over the top but I gave it the benefit of the doubt. When the steak arrived, it did have an okay looking sear on it and to be honest that was the best part of the steak. I didn't realize it was sous-vide or I definitely wouldn't have ordered it. Although the middle was cooked to perfection, it was the texture of prime rib. The fat was off texture due to the cooking method and the flavor ended at the searing. I definitely won't be dining here again but based off of the other reviews I never would have known what to expect. read more

My coworkers and I had a great experience at the chopshouse. Our server was very knowledgeable about the menu and was very attentive. The manager came over to our table twice to thank us for coming and to check on us. The food was delicious and served to share. I was fairly disappointed honestly. There's a fairly big buzz around this place for being a fancy steakhouse in little ole Ottumwa. The location is fairly odd in my opinion being in the areas parking lot. But that's no big deal. The Inside is modern and nice. Half of the server staff were very nice, the other half were rather snooty to us. We came in with a party of 17, so ideally you'd think all of them would be trying to get the best tip possible. But who knows. It took forever to get anything. Our reservation was for 7 and we're finally leaving at 9:45. Which I understand with a larger party, but why would a cocktail take 35 minutes on a slow night? The most disappointing part of it all was the food itself though. The shareable appetizers were pretty good even though they were out of our first two choices. But the 10 ounce filet which was $64 could've at least had some salt on it. Same with the $11 truffle Mac and cheese. Unfortunately I had to ask for a salt shaker to pass around the table. The only thing that had any salt happen to be the bread board you get with the experience. I think they put all the salt they had on the butter. Thats why they didn't have any on the steak. Although the food had little to no flavor they at least nailed the medium rare temp I asked for. Another bonus is at least the salt shaker was pretty cool looking. read more

Ottumwa desperately needs a sophisticated restaurant. Wissota might be it. Time will tell. The decor is modern and elegant. I was with a large group and we shared several dishes. Some were quite nice, the scallops, the breaded olives, and surprisingly the alligator. Other things a bit disappointing. I had the giant prawns, which were huge, but otherwise. Not noteworthy. Service was excellent and quite accommodating. The prices seem high to me, especially for Ottumwa. I'd say a little more seasoning and a bit more creativity would make happier. A few more reasonably priced menu items might help for Wapello County diners. read more

Let's start with the positives, wait staff was excellent. It would however be helpful to have your staff try the different entrees so they could speak to their experience tasting them. The restaurant was clean and modern looking. The food was decent, however not in comparison to the prices. A $40 chicken and a $50 pork chop is really excessive. Steaks start at $45+. That is for just a steak. All sides, and what they call 'toppings' are extra and start at $11 and go up from there. We had the scallops which were in a sauce that was very thin and didn't coat them, and the ribeye steak which would say was fine but nothing special. Fareway (the grocery store down the road) steaks are much better. Side of brussel sprouts were undercooked and the mashed potatoes were flavorful but soaked in butter. Drink prices were decent since we were there during happy hour. Overall, it was OK but would not go back solely because of the prices. We hope this stays in Ottumwa but they really need to adjust the prices and menu. read more

This is everything Ottumwa needs! It features beautiful, contemporary, and welcoming decor. The food is spectacular! No frozen or fast food here! The appetizers were thoughtful. Stuffed olives were my favorite. The flatbread was fresh and colorful. My New York strip with blue cheese was fantastic! The shrimp my husband got looked really tempting, too. The mushroom risotto could be a meal on its own. I confess I was not excited about fries. But when they arrived, they were so addictive! The sprinkle of truffle oil gave them real panache. Make sure you have dessert! The towering chocolate cake was fudgy, not too sweet, and jeweled with sliced strawberries. It is expensive but worth the splurge. Restaurant was very cozy and the ambiance was great; very sophisticated. Food was excellent- wine list was extensive, they had great selection of beers and cocktails. I had the caprese salad and harvest salad which were great for the price (definitely recommend the harvest salad) the crab-cakes were phenomenal and the bread was amazing. I also ordered the 5oz filet mignon and believe it is the best stake I've had. Lastly the service was amazing, we were taken care of by Michelle who was so friendly and hardworking.
