This was my first time visiting the Wohlfahrt Haus in Wytheville, VA. Our senior bus group, arrived around noon for a 1:30 performance of MoTown Christmas. Lunch was served first. Food was good. Individual appetizers and side salads were waiting for us when we were seated. No choice on salad dressing... the only choice was ranch. Soon after our meal arrived: turkey, gravy, dressing, mashed sweet potatoes, green bean casserole, cranberry sauce, and rolls. Then in intermission, a chocolate strawberry cobbler was served. Church Basement Ladies was a great performance! We enjoyed the comfort and privacy in the theater. However, I was warned by a couple different acquaintances that the food was absolutely the worst. ...It was...The chicken breast appeared to be a small, thin flash-frozen slab, appearing to have been boiled. I spooned BBQ sauce off to try to eat the driest meat I ever ate. Shells & cheese was so over-cooked, Extremely disgusting Gummy baked beans and a carrot cake that was anybody's guess as to what it was in the ramken were served. Every guest I spoke to in the theater restroom felt the same! PLEASE IMPROVE YOUR FOOD to make the experience great and have a full theater of guests! Our server was great! We stayed at the holiday inn express across the entrance to the wohlfahrt and booked our tickets at the same time. The holiday inn was excellent. We saw Elvis live. I was never an Elvis fan but I have to say it was an excellent show. The Elvis Stephen Freeman was very engaging and great voice. Seating was very comfortable and lots of room. The food service was excellent. The reason for 4 and not 5 stars was that the food was just ok. read more

When we got there we had to wait for 30 minutes for the waitress to take our order because they had a table topper of 15. So we waited and had a drink. We got the soup which I sent back, my friend had the grilled chicken sandwich, it was so tuff he only ate the bun with the tomato and lettuce. The server said she would take both things off the bill. I did have the seasonal salad and it was delicious. read more

We were at Wohlfahrt Haus for The Foreigner this past weekend. The cast was outstanding, and the play was very funny and well done. Dinner was good, and I appreciated having a vegetarian option. The food could have been hotter, but that is to be expected when feeding a crowd at the same time. Everything tasted very good. Also, the service was excellent. We will definitely be back. read more

Stayed in Wytheville while on a road trip and found this gem. The staff was so inviting and generous and service was great considering the large crowd of people they needed to wait on. Food was phenomenal. Smoked chicken was cooked to perfection! We saw God and Country and what an amazing show!!!! Great performance done by all!! We enjoyed ourselves so much!!! read more

We saw Million Dollar Quarter. The show was very good, very entertaining Performers did a good job, funny, good musicians and good singers. The service was very good. Our server had a very large section to take care of but still did a very good job of taking care of everyone. Mixed crowd some people were there for very casual night out with the whole family and some were dressed up for a special night out. The food was about average as good as you would expect in most cruise ship dining rooms. The show was a little delayed in starting but that didn't affect my enjoyment of the evening. My only complaint is that if you are at a table for more than two the chairs are high back low padding diner type chairs which become uncomfortable quickly and certainly by the end of three hours. read more

The show was awesome, the food....not so much. The place is older, chairs are acceptable but not extremly comfortable. The restrooms are clean but could use more of them (and some remodeling). Most of the servers are also in the play, so I am sure they are exhausted by the end of the night. Go for the show, don't expect too much on the dinner and you will have a great time, lots of talented folks in the show, would definately go again read more

Disappointed Pulled BBQ chicken had a good taste; portion suitable for a child or small appetite. Potatoes in potato salad were hard; salad was very dry. Coleslaw was served in a plastic condiment cup; size suitable for ranch or catchup; then only half full, about 2 spoons full. Asked for half sweet and half unsweetened tea; poured from 2 pictures, neither had a drop of sugar. Blackberry cobbler was very doughy, found one blackberry. Excellent dinner, steaks cooked perfectly. Atmosphere was unique and really cool. Service was good.

The show was great and the food was decent for "catering." Attended a showing of Joseph and the performance was great. The layout of the theatre, lights and sound were all great. The seats were comfortable although since they were a little bulking it was a tight squeeze in between the tables. The dinner was good considering they are preparing dinner for 200 people all at once. Overall it was a great value and I'll be back. read more

Food was not German served at a German dinner theater. Theater was German in name alone. The show was not German either. 44 dollars a person. Our waiter was phenomenal however and the show was cute. If you are coming for an authentic German experience go elsewhere. If you want edible food and a decent show and are willing to spend 44 dollars a person plus tip to do so... enjoy. I usually don't post with one trip, but this one needs to be posted since I won't be returning. I ordered take out and the Weiner Schnitzel was ruined by putting steamed broccoli in with it . Neither would have been bad alone (although the broccoli could have used some butter) but the schnitzel was rendered completely soggy by the broccoli. I also ordered clam strips which were supposed to come with tartar sauce and none was included. Very disappointing meal. Will be going to Peking Palace from now on. read more

Decent shows but the place is so poorly run it's hard to have a good time. Been to a couple of dinner shows and the food was poor. Caught an evening show last night that started an hour later than scheduled, the main actor was having issues with the mic and instead of stopping the show to fix they just let it go on with his microphone going on and off. Disappointing because the actors really try to deliver a good performance. read more

I really wanted to like this place on my second visit. Yes I had to try it again in case the first visit was a fluke. I have been in the food industry for 20+ years. Want decent service check on me offer dessert and such. Dislike writing bad reviews do want to give others a heads up Few German beer choices which is the only reason for the 2 stars. I spent several months in Germany and acquired a taste for their beer. Food- not many German options for being a German restaurant. Did have a wide variety of other items to choose from. The Schnitzel was tough with no flavor even with the "gravy". Vegetable was frozen broccoli and the best thing on my plate. Asked for a different side was given a list of items no mention of an up charge for any of them. The baked potato was not done still hard. Server was quick to greet table. Took drink order than food. Food was quick to come out, now I know why. She checked on us within a minute or so of receiving food and hadn't tasted everything in plate yet. So said it was okay. Didn't see her again until I was "done" with my mediocre food. Nothing asked about the potato that had one bite out of it. Received check and noticed up charge for potato I didn't eat. Went in for dinner last night sat at the bar did not have an opportunity to make the show ordered appetizers wings and pretzel and sausage plate took 25 minutes to get the bartender was so caught up in conversation that our food was left in the back kitchen until he was done got our Wienerschnitzel it was about a 4-oz portion breading was coming off of it because it have been setting so long and the broccoli was cold to the touch another sign the food is left why the bartender was yapping his mouth I wouldn't recommend this place to anybody at least on the bar side the service was worse then the food read more

While I can't speak to the quality of their dinner theater, we tried the Matterhorn Lounge (the theater's bar/restaurant) for dinner and were very pleased with our experience. The carry a large selection of German beers, and serve some real German food, which was totally unexpected. read more

My wife and I had wiener schnitzel and a wurst plate. While we enjoyed our meals we would not say they ere outstanding.

We loved this place! Did not go to a show but came for dinner as we stopped in Wytheville for the night. The food was good...and not just the German fair. My daughters got nachos and quesadillas and both were good! The best thing about this place though is the people. The guy behind the bar knew everybody that came in the place and made us feel so welcome. Even the other patrons were great. We love to support local when we travel and this will definitely be a stop for us again! read more

We attended a Dinner and Show Friday night and it was outstanding. The service and performance was done by the cast members. It was our first time there and we will surely be back. For the price of a Dinner and Show and we brought a party of eight. We felt that the price was very reasonable and performance wonderful. Great bartenders and a friendly clientele make the Matterhorn Bier Garten a great stop, either before or after theater, or just for dinner and drinks. The dinner theater is very well designed. Food is getting worse...in the past 2.5 years - we have been to 4 different shows and while the shows are enjoyable it is disappointing to pay so much for a meal and show and the food be overly soggy, salty or dry. I understand they are feeding over 200 people over a 2 hour period, but it takes a lot to mess up green beans...and they did. The meat was dry and the potato dish was overly salty. This experience will weigh heavy on how quickly I come back to try again. read more

This is one of my favorite ways to spend a day. The food is great and filling. The atmosphere is great and the shows are even better. The seats are comfy and the acoustics good. To respond to other reviews pertaining to food service, it is important to remember that your service staff is also the cast for the show. This provides a unique experience of being able to interact with the cast before the show. The schedule is nice wherein you are given your appetizers immediately and then your entree is delivered immediately following before you get dessert and coffee during intermission. Seriously, this place is amazing. I've been to see the Buddy Holly Show, the Christmas Show, the Million Dollar Quartet, and will be repeating the experience tomorrow for the annual Christmas show. Dinner was excellent. Waitress (martha) was outstanding but the highlight was the musical. Always...Patsy Cline was phenomenal. The cast was superb especially the girl who played Patsy. You could close your eys (or keep them open) and there was Patsy Cline. One of the best I have seen here. read more

Did not see a show, but had drinks and dinner in the bar, the Matterhorn Lounge. Good beer selection and good prices. Love the hot pretzels with beer cheese! Nice fish tacos also. But the best part is the people-- local place where everyone knows each other, but I felt very welcome, chatted with the bartenders and other customers. First a note to management, then the review. Dear management: In your 2016 Christmas Carol performance, please remove the duet with the young Ebenezer and his sister. I saw your performance this past Friday, and during this song I was tempted to cover my ears, it was so out of tune. The song adds nothing to the story, and only makes the audience suffer. If you paid attention, you noticed that no one applauded after that song. Now that that's out of the way, here's the review. All in all, my wife and I had an enjoyable time, and if you are in the area, I recommend you see a show. To set your expectations, think of it like a cafeteria combined with a high school drama production. With few exceptions, which I mention below, the performers were great. The singing was on par with what I came in expecting. The set was well-designed and attractive. Although we didn't eat there, we were treated very nicely by the wait staff. As for negatives, It's no all so bad, really, but you should go in with your eyes open. 1. We chose not to go for the dinner, saving around $13 each which we applied to dinner at Graze on Main instead. The night we went, they were having a turkey dinner - the day after Thanksgiving. We met some people who had the dinner and they said it was like cafeteria food. 2. The soundtrack is all pre-recorded. That's not bad of itself - it's that the quality varied from very nice orchestral (act 1) to kid-keyboard-quality (act 2, especially during the Cratchit family song), and even staticky (Ebenezer's climactic, well-sung solo was overshadowed by the poor quality recording). 3. The song where Ebenezer is first haunted by Marley is just out-of-place. Ebenezer acts terrified, but the tune is upbeat; to wrap it up, a troop of ghosts or zombies appears and starts doing the Thriller dance. There was polite applause after, and my wife and I laughed. Even now, I'm not sure if you intended the piece to be funny or not. 4. It pains me to say this, but the original Christmas story is out-of-place in this performance. It's an awkward transition at best, and causes the climax of the story to fall flat. The Christmas Carol story resolution is postponed just to sing a few Christmas carols. The performance at this point is already clocking at 2 hours, and you lose the audience instead of satisfying them. 5. It's great that there's the option to view just the show, but should you do it, be aware that your seating will be low-priority. There are really only about 5-6 seats available for you at the back or side of the room. There's the chance that it won't be a full house, in which case you can sit at a table, but for the Christmas season, that's unlikely. If you sit on the side, you won't see part of the stage's side, but it's not bad. If you sit in the back, pray that you aren't behind someone tall since you are seated at the same level as a table of other people and have to see through them. 6. If you are there for dinner, you are committing to a 6-10:15PM evening. 7. During breaks, the line for the women's restroom always wound its way through the foyer. read more

Went here on the suggestion of a gentleman at a local winery. said it was fantastic. Had a wide selection of adult beverages. Food was ok. I had the schnitzel... It was kinda greasy and all of the breading was falling off. Not horrible, but a bit disappointed given all of praises sung by the gentleman at the winery. read more

We stop in Wythville, VA during our biannual "snow bird" travels from Ohio to South Carolina and return. The Wohlfahrt restaurant is a "must" when we stop. I was stationed in Germany twice during my Army career. The Wohlfahrt restaurant is the best German restaurant I have found in the US. read more

I went the first time w/girlfiends and saw "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" and I was hooked - the food is amazing, the way the whole place is laid out if just perfect if you have older people - because there are no bad seats and the seats are the most comfortable club chairs you will ever-----sit in - I've been in the last two years - six times and each show gets better and better. I travel w/a girlfiend who is a pickkyyyy eater - they did not have a problem at all fixing her alternatives and she loved it - my father who is not a big musical person loved it - so now he's been converted and we're going back to see the Johnnie Cash tribute. read more
