In my experience, Robert Wohlman of Northwest Gastroenterology Associates was a poor diagnostician. In 2003, I was sick, really sick. Almost every night, I suffered from severe heartburn. The only thing that I could do during these heartburn attacks was to sit up, browse the internet or watch television. Some nights I threw up, some nights I did not. Finally, I went to a primary care physician who thought it might be GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease). She wrote a prescription for a proton inhibitor antacid and said that I should see a specialist if the drugs didn't help. After a month, there was no improvement, so I searched for a specialist. Having no idea of what gastroenterologist might be good, I relied on Seattle Magazine's top doctor list, which led me to Dr. Robert Wohlman. My first impression was positive. Dr. Wohlman examined my abdomen and took some notes regarding my symptoms. He prescribed Nexium, a different proton inhibitor from the one I had been taking. Another month went by, still no improvement. I went back, this time Dr. Wohlman doubled the Nexium dosage and setup an endoscopy appointment. Dr. Wolhman also performed the endoscopy. However, the endoscopy and stomach tissue biopsy found no abnormalities. Thank God I didn't have cancer. But I still had frequent nightly heartburn. Now I was getting so afraid of the pain, that I was reluctant to eat anything. A few more months went by, and after an especially severe and prolonged throwing up episode, I went back. For this appointment, I came prepared with questions inspired from researching gastroenterological diseases. For reasons unknown, Dr. Wohlman prescribed nortriptyline, a drug primarily used to treat major depression, and sometimes, albeit rarely, irritable bowel syndrome. At this point, I had lost all confidence in Dr. Wohlman's ability and motivation to determine the cause of my ailment. But I thought he could still be helpful to setup further diagnostic tests. Fingers crossed, literally. I already had an inconclusive endoscopy and didn't want a colonoscopy. So I thought perhaps I should get an ultrasound. To me my symptoms were similar to gallstones except for the pain between the shoulder blades and pain under the right shoulder. So for the next visit, I described to Dr. Wohlman my "new" symptoms of shoulder blade pain and right shoulder pain. I practically spelled out "GALLSTONES" to him. Subsequently, his nurse setup the ultrasound appointment. Lucky for me, the ultrasound showed gallstones, and I had my gallbladder removed that same week. Three tiny incisions later, my gallbladder and heartburn were now history. I've been heartburn free for over 4 years now. I'm saddened that Dr. Wohlman didn't spend enough time on me as a patient to figure out what was wrong. I feel that he was too eager to simply prescribe medication. I have gastroparesis and been misdiagnosed by this doctor for 3 years in a row from 2013 to 2016. He simply failed to perform empty stomach test that detects this condition regardless of symptoms and clues I've been giving to him. After performing endoscopy, colonoscopy, MRI, CT scan, smart pill study, his all time response was IBS. He gave a lot of meds to try(non of them worked and had terrible side affects), said I can eat anything, which greatly increases my inflammation, bloating, constipation and made my life miserable for many years. In 2018, i went to a different doctor that made a correct diagnosis, and with dietary changes and medication and can live better now. I would strongly advise to avoid this doctor and the clinic and recommend to go to Swedish, UW or Virginia Mason. The wait time at other places is much longer, but it definitely worse it. read more

Absolutely the worst doctor. My husband spent 3 nights in Overlake Hospital, and Dr. Wohlman prescribed Omeprazole. He ran endoscopy and said everything is normal but my husband's abdominal pain never went away. After a few weeks my husband called the Dr. Wohlman's office and his nurse got back to him saying Dr. Wohlman is really busy and recommends you to take Tylenol for your pain. This doctor clearly does not care about patients, he just likes running endoscopy and then that's it, he says "you have no issues" but your pain will not go away. The hospital charged us $25000 and nothing has changed in my husband's health. Sorry to see doctors' society has gone far away from treating patients and is all about $$. If you want someone to care and find out what is wrong with, do not waste your time and go see someone else. read more

I have had many experiences with top Doctors because of IBS and GERD and have surgery for polyps removal every 3-5 yrs. We moved here and I went to Dr.Wohlman. I found him the best and most skilled of any physician I ever had. He also is warm and caring and his surgical staff/nurses were the best! I absolutely agree with the above review. I too had the same experience with Dr. Wohlman. I was referred to Dr. Wohlman due to having excruciating pain in the area of my liver. Dr. Wohlman saw me in the hospital and basically said, "Wait. It, the pain, will go away." Of course the pain did not go away. I scheduled another appointment and he stated that it appeared that I needed additional testing. Albeit, a CT scan already showed an abnormality. So, I got scheduled for another CT Scan. While at the CT scan, I still had contrast in my system from the previous scan while I was in the hospital. They called Dr. Wohlman and he said that I should come back on Monday and he was adding a MRI to the testing. I showed up for the MRI and CT on Monday and Dr. Wohlman's office actually cancelled the MRI without notifying me or giving me a rationale as to why it was cancelled. So, it appears that we are back to Dr. Wohlman's diagnosis of "wait and the pain will go away." Save your time and go to another specialist. Not only does he not know how to diagnose, his office is discourteous by not making contact with patients. I would NOT recommend this doctor. read more

Not the very worst experience I've had (would've rated 1.5 stars if it had been an option), but I can think of absolutely nothing to recommend this guy and suggest you spend your valuable time and hard-earned dollars with one of the enumerable other options out there. read more

Dr Wohlman's very kind, intelligent, thorough as our gastroenterologist. He always answers our questions. He provides verbal explanations and provides written information for us to review and prepare for upcoming visits, labs, procedures, results, treatments and follow-up. Dr Wohlman is realistic, clear and honest. We are confidant in his care and judgement. We trust Dr Wohlman and believe you can, too. His staff is so polite and very professional, communications between us have been excellent. read more
