This is for the karaoke bar in the back of the restaurant, which I had absolutely no idea of right until I got there. This place is SWEET. Come here for cheap fun with your friends by renting your own room for a low price (we got a medium sized room for half a dozen people for $35/hr right at 10pm). Also come here for even cheaper fun by getting warm and cozy singing with newly made friends. There's not a lot of room out there, but I know for sure that they're having fun. Definitely reserve rooms in advance. You will need to reserve for 2 hours as they won't kindly let you reserve for a 1 hour slot. One downside is that our cocktail pitcher was incredibly tiny and I thought had hardly any alcohol despite us asking for the strongest drink (the Scorpion). The name of the restaurant, Wok n'Roll, implies a rollicking good time with fat Buddhas dancing around you to serve you Far Eastern delecacies. Unfortunately, this did not happen. The food was average, but kind of on the cheap side for lunch. It's no different than any other Chinese place I've been, so I just got the egg rolls and hot and sour soup, at a whopping total of $5.00. My friend got the Philadelphia roll, which she said was good, but I was leery of ordering from a Japanese menu of a combined Chinese/Japanese restaurant. As one of the more affordable karaoke bars in town, I wanted to love this place .. but was left underwhelmed. Cons - terrible bar services (at least on the karaoke level floor). The bartender didn't what wines they had available, and wasn't aware of the ingredients in a shirley temple which is a fairly common drink. Couple that with the fact that this area is loud (there's public karaoke available in this area), it made it difficult for my friend and I to get our drink orders in and delivered. It was almost to the point where we wanted to not get drinks at all. Maybe the bartender was new? *shrugs* Pros - one of the most affordable karaoke lounges in the city with the option of private rooms. We had a blast singing along (badly) to our favorite 90's and 2000's songs. When our 2 hours came to an end, they didn't kick us out as the next party was running late, which we really appreciated. Wow this was one place I started going to before I ever read any reviews on Yelp. I'm glad I did, cause the reviews seem to be not so hot, lol. Anywho, I am a regular Wok n Roll customer. Whenever I'm in the mood for sushi, but don't feel like traveling far, the place works for me. Its in the heart of Gallery Place, and now with the movie theatre, stores and all thats going on down there, you would think the wait on the place would be a nightmare. I've gone at various times, after work, after a game, in the middle of the weekend and I've never waited more than 5 minutes for a table. The place isn't large, but it isn't a hole in the wall either. The wait staff is pretty friendly, I always seem to see the same faces there and I've been going for about 2 years now. Place looks clean, and they seem to turn tables pretty quickly. Now for the food, I can't really speak on much other than the sushi. (Seems to be any place that offers sushi gets my choice most days over any of the other offerings) The sushi is good. Plain and simple. Not deliciuos, not bad, just good. It works for me, and even more is that its pretty affordable. Its one of the spots I hit either solo or with a few friends, when we want to grab a quick, good meal. It isn't the place I would take a friend who's willing to try sushi and never had before. Wok and Roll is only getting four stars based on their food. Went there on a very busy weekend with about six of us. Everything seemed to be doing well, until our waitress came over to take our menu, she seemed to have a really hard time understanding us. I even tried to use my limited mandarin knowledge to help her. Luckily, the order turned out to be right and I'll never forget the Peking duck I ate there. It was awesome and my girlfriend really enjoyed her entree, but couldn't get over how good the fried rice was. I don't think anyone complained about their order at all. The bad part was the service: We saw our waitress once and only once. She never showed up again. We had to get random waiters to get us water and it took the manager to get us the bill. I think the biggest tip she got from one of us was 10% (and that wasn't me). She's probably one of the worst waitresses I've had, because I've never been completely forgotten. Don't get the beef udon stir fry noodles! After tasting just the udon noodles, you'll taste that oil and saltiness in your mouth. Not sure if they added too much soy sauce or salt. I went here last night after a free walking tour with Cultural Tours DC. I usually just laughed at the name everyday while walking from the metro to my house, and figured that I'd never eat there. When the guide mentioned that the building was one of some historical significance during the assassination of Lincoln, we half jokingly decided to grub there after the walk. I was freaked out by the name, but the food was pretty good. I had a tuna nigiri, which was pretty good. Granted, I've been in a land-locked city at 10,000 feet for the past two years and don't know anything about sushi, but I liked it. The triple delight, however, left something to be desired. The brown sauce wasn't tangy enough, and some of the broccolis had that bleach taste that they get from over steaming. My friends who got sushi were happier with their plates, and it came out to about $20/person with a beer, so that's not too bad either. I think this is a place that could easily be between two and four stars depending on what you get, so find something you like and stick to it and you won't be disappointed. Specifically about the bar, Karaoke bar in particular: I hate to be the asshole who writes a bad review, but this place deserves it. Specifically about the bar. If you put a "zombie" on your menu - it needs to be a zombie. It should have 3 rums in it, a light rum, a dark rum, and topped off at the end with Bacardi 151. If you are not sure, google it. Here they argued with me over the ingredients. I expect that after having a zombie, I will go from sober to somewhat tipsy very quickly. That's the idea. That's the whole point. that's why it's called a zombie. Nope. not here. They don't put bacardie 151, they tell me I'm wrong (I'm a bartender too, I apparently know a little more than they do) and it took me FIVE drinks at this place to get SOMEWHAT tipsy. I dunno what's going on here, but if you plan on having a drink, don't come here, they'll rip you off and make fake drinks while they're at it. 0/10, would not recommend. Hubs and I ate here on a whim, as we were in Chinatown and hungry... The restaurant itself is pretty hole in the wall, as others have indicated, and the decor is very nondescript but the servers were friendly and the prices were low - basic components for midday meal (we visited at kind of an off time, like 2 or 3 PM) I ordered a stir fry tofu dish, which was served with rice. The sauce was a excellent, though the tofu was a little chewier than what I would have preferred. Still, it was yummy enough to eat about half of - I was asked if I would like a to-go box, but I didn't see my meal being that tasty re-heated, and besides, we weren't going straight home anyway, so that would have been a lost cause. This is a place to go for bad westernized chinese food (didn't try to sushi, but doubt it's that good), with a depressing and somewhat dirty ambiance. Is that... a touchscreen? Yes, Wok and Roll has definitely taken karaoke for a technology upgrade with a touchscreen menu and wireless mics. Four friends and I split a room for $35 an hour and went through a variety of English and Chinese songs from the 80s til present. Most of the songs had real music videos! Definite plus. The room was nice and colorful, with comfortably couches surrounding a small table for drinks. Drinks were a bit pricey - $6 for a bubble tea or Heineken - but my friends ordered a few. Okay, first of all: the goddawful name. Puntastic! I may have subconsciously docked them at least half a star just for offending my delicate wordplay sensibilities. On the other hand, this place is a welcome oasis in a sea of sketch and one of the few cheapish eat spots within ready access of my office. Add a star for that. Anyway, those of you who are less persnickety about the incidental details will probably appreciate this place. I've eaten in once and gotten takeout once. Both times the service has been prompt and pleasant. I think the prices are entirely reasonable, particularly given the Chinatown location and heavy tourist traffic. The atmosphere is nothing to write home about, but it strikes me as one of the cleaner and more comfortable of the restaurants in this stretch. The food itself is pretty good. I'd like to second Nathan's shout-out for the $6.95 Japanese lunch combos. So far I've only ordered the vegetarian sushi, but I plan on trying the real deal - doesn't strike me as the kind of place where you'd fear dysentery from the raw fish. The miso was mediocre, but the sushi was quite good. On my eat-in visit my guest and I ordered from the Chinese menu. Again, I was pleased (if not blown away.) The portions were waaay too generous and everything was tasty and fresh. So, overall? It's not a place you'd take a hot date and not the sort of restaurant you'd wax nostalgic for once you moved away, but it does the trick. Oh the wonders of Chinatown... Yesterday, I checked out the Wok 'n Roll in DC's chinatown for a quick snack... the shrimp tempura was crunchy but average. Their drinks, however, were fabulous. One of the best mango green tea's I've had in a while... comparable to Cha For Tea's in Irvine, CA even. Plus it's the only place I know of in chinatown where you can get boba or bubble tea. The bill? ~$10 ($6 for tempura, $3 for mango green tea) They also have lunch specials from 12-3 M-F and Happy hour from 5-7 but unfortunately, I came at 4. Wavering between 2 & 3 stars...I'd say 2.5 but i'll round up based on the sushi happy hour price. I didn't try all their chinese foods, but I did try their egg rolls and hot & sour soup for lunch. oh chinablock. when will i find hot & sour soup that isn't overly peppery or has a strange back of the throat pepper/not-exactly metal but metal-ish taste to it? The hot & sour soup wasn't that good, imo. egg rolls are decent if free, but not worth ordering off the menu for. as for the japanese portion, the miso soup is the standard they-probably-made-it-out-of-a-packet-but-it's-not-bad version that almost all restaurants use (but hey, i like the packet version) and the sushi hour is a great price. $1 sushi, Monday through Friday from 5-8pm? Yay! but my biggest complaint is that the rice::fish ratio can be kind of off for their pieces. I'm not a sushi chef but my friends are (the serious, they came from japan and apprenticed for this, kind) so although i can't really make "correct" sushi, i at least know what it should be. Wok & Roll's sushi chefs they do not use the correct amount of rice. Now, this is pretty negligible for most people because it still tastes good. (I fall into this variety, which is why i cannot be a true sushi snob, although I try!) and for $1 a roll, I won't mind (much). Other than that, my only other complaint is that I wish their $1 sushi menu was larger (nigiri sushi only, no rolls), but I'll take what I can get. read more

I used to live in a condo a block away from Wok n Roll in Chinatown, so I've frequented the Wok more than I can count-- happy hour and random sushi cravings made for a buncha visits--more than I'd like to admit. Honestly, sushi at the Wocka Flocka doesn't compare at all to Sushi from Seattle or NYC, but for what I've had in DC, it was pretty good. I always stick to the usual suspects... the spider roll, dragon roll, the tuna lover, the cali roll, and the philly roll. All of them were tasty, relatively cheap, simple, and filled me up. The restaurant also serves up Americanized Chinese food which is also greasy and delicious. Perfect for when you get those unhealthy cravings for General Tso's Cheek-en. Overall, this is your prototypical, cater to Caucasian, Asian-establishment, with the same vibe and feel you'd expect from a Chinese restaurant in the burbs. Don't expect much ambiance.. it's kind of a shanty little restaurant... but it's DC Chinatown; high class sushi? Fuhgedaboutit. Oh, very important... they serve orange slices after your meal. On a Friday night in Chinatown, other restaurants had a 45+ minute wait for walk-ins, but this one had a wait of about 15-20 minutes. That should be a telling sign, but our experience was pretty good. A mango saketini was about $8, and I ordered a spider roll and a Hawaiian roll. We had a delicious lunch at this restaurant last week- the sushi, dumpligs, noodle soup and black bean chicken were all superb! More important, though, was the kindness the staff showed my daughter who fainted at the hostess stand. They didn't make a huge fuss or panic. They came over right away, offered her orange juice and when we were seated they brought her soup to further help her hydrate and feel better while we decided on our lunch. So the food was really very average. I paid $20 for a chicken and peanut dish with one appetizer and it was a meal that was not worth more than $15. The most memorable thing about the evening was that my appetizer actually arrived AFTER I had been served my main meal. I should have cancelled the appetizer at that point. It was egg rolls and by rolls they meant two, enough for the the use of the word 'rolls' instead of 'roll.' Their shrimp wonton noodles make my homemade stuff look really good. I could not taste any shrimp in the wontons. The best thing about this place is the sushi happy hour and its low cost. Simple, no frills sushi to fill you up. What's not to like? This ain't no fancy smancy Japanese restaurant. I stumbled in here last night just looking for any sushi place because it sounded great. I was in Chinatown, after all, but sadly, I walked in to Wok and Roll..... The restaurant is messy at best, the bathroom is deplorable, and the menu is a book with a terrifying asian cat on it with paper pages that stick together. I ordered the California roll and the spicy crunchy shrimp roll. They were ok at best. My friend got their large dragon roll which looked good but it was made with warm eel and cold other fillings which made the whole thing warm and gross feeling. You'd think that CHINAtown would be full of quality Chinese food restaurants, but this isn't really the case. Depending on where you go, you might just get something resembling a form of meat, other times you're feasting on a selection of old leather and feline. Unlike most of the joints in the area, Wok & Roll is a VERY safe bet. The food is certainly decent with a strong vegetarian selection, good lunch specials and friendly staff. Went here with a Groupon and was pleasantly surprised. Doesn't look impressive from the outside but inside, food is good! Service was quick and the waiters were so nice, even though we were using a Groupon. The prices seemed a bit steep but then we got the sushi and it was delicious! Not sure if I was blown away because my expectations weren't that high, but quality is definitely good for what you're paying. I've had my fair share of Chinese food and if I had to compare, Wok and Roll is at best, mediocre. The shrimp lo mein was good, but definitely not as good as it should have been. The shrimp were tiny, like, really small, the sauce was very watery and the lo mein a bit mushy. The staff was courteous and one of my friends ordered the coconut bubble tea, which was incredible!!! I am from the San Francisco Bay Area so my idea of a Chinatown is radically different than the one here. The Chinatown in DC seems to be way too commercialized, and so, it is no surprise that the food is not so special either. The dining room is spacious and like most places in DC, the place has a history. The restaurant was once the residence of Ms. Mary Surratt, who was convicted of taking part in the conspiracy to assassinate Abraham Lincoln and was the first woman to be executed by the U.S. government. Even if you don't like the food, hey, at least you can say that you visited an historical landmark. read more
