THIS PLACE OVERCHARGES YOUR CREDIT CARD!!! First they slip additional drinks on your tab and then they will charge a minimum 18% gratuity that they don't tell you about upfront. If you read the reviews, I am not the only one that is stating that this place overcharges your tab. I noticed that they charged me for 4 beers instead of the 3 I'd had and so I told them to remove the extra one. They said that I had ordered 4 and tried to come up with all kinds of excuses ranging from my friends ordering one for me (which they had not) and pointing out the bartenders that had taken the orders from me (of course the bartenders are going to say I had more). I stood my ground and challenged them to review the video surveillance. Another lame excuse to cover up for themselves - the video doesn't go that far. I was there for a grand total of an hour and a half. They then threatened me that they would not give me my card back if I didn't sign the tab. I called the credit card company and reported to them what was going on and they stated that it was against the law for them to keep the credit card. They handed the card back to me. Fortunately, the credit card company assured me that I could dispute the charge once posted. I will be disputing. Be careful. They also charge an 18% gratuity no matter what and then they have a space for a second gratuity. I am sure this is nothing but a place full of scam artists that is just taking advantage of their patrons. Avoid like the plague. I was there to meet up with some friends for Karoake and needless to say it turned out to be a shitty evening thanks to the scam this place is running. The restaurant and food are sub par and overpriced. The drinks are also ridiculously over priced..if you happen to venture upstairs into the kareoke area, things get even worse. The food and drink cost even more upstairs even though it's the same establishment! Specials from downstairs don't carry upstairs. Also, upstairs charges a ridiculous gratuity on absolutely everything... Gratuity is supposed to be for services rendered! Even if you rent a kareoke room for an hour or more, they charge a ridiculous gratuity onto it! Avoid this place like the plague. The only good thing about this place is that its karaoke song selection contains a lot of fairly new top 40 songs and that they have brand new shiny private karaoke rooms. Otherwise, there's nothing good about this place. I recently hosted a karaoke party with 20 friends. They did not provide service to the room. The karaoke system is more complicated than usual but they don't take any time to show you how to use it so you waste a lot of your time trying to find songs. So that didn't really bother me until I was presented with the bill for the room rental that included a 18% gratuity. What is the gratuity for??? They did not provide service to the room at all. If you want food or drinks, you have to order it at the bar and then they will bring it to you in the room BUT they automatically charge 18% gratuity on the food/drink bill so to add an additional 18% gratuity on the room rental is ridiculous. There was no mention of this mandatory 18% gratuity when I called to inquire about the room prices. The manager had the audacity to try to say it was my fault for not asking if there was a mandatory gratuity on the karaoke room. What kind of backwards logic is that? Gratuity is not customary in karaoke room rental. I have been to a lot of different karaoke places in DC and New York, including Muzette in Adams Morgan, and no other karaoke place tacks on a mandatory 18% gratuity on room rental. In addition, that's not how gratuity works. No one is actually obligated to pay gratuity unless they want to and then gratuity is only warranted for actual service provided. In this case, there was no additional service related to the karaoke room because the restaurant had tacked on a 18% gratuity to everyone's food and drink bills already. The issue was resolved, after a really long argument with the manager, when someone (who I would guess to be one of the owners of the restaurant) said they would void the check and take off the gratuity. Unfortunately, the damage was already done and the incident (and the subpar food) left a bad taste. FOOD: The food was not good. We ordered three sushi rolls but were only given two. Given how this place operates, I wouldn't be surprised if we got charged for three rolls but my boyfriend paid so I didn't see the bill. The sushi was worse than what you would buy at a grocery store. It did not seem fresh at all. I wish I had read the review below regarding the cockroach found in an egg roll. Blech. SERVICE: The service was fine but the waitress seemed surly and people in our party complained that it was kind of difficult to get her attention at the bar to order anything. Although I like sushi on occasion, I'm no connoisseur of what makes sushi good or bad, other than if the fish is rancid, I don't eat it... But for me, the sushi at Wok N' Roll is pretty good, nearby and reasonably priced, especially during the sushi happy hour! That's when each piece of sushi is a buck! I've only had the sushi at Wok n'Roll, and most likely that's all I'd go there for since my favorite Chinese is served up at Chinatown Express just around the corner. If you go with two, three or even more people, order one of the sushi boats! They're full of sushi and quite funny! I mean this huge wooden boat lands on your table beautifully laid out full of various sushi and sashimi as well as the usual ginger and wasabi. I think this is the first time I've ever given a one-star review. Let me list all the things that bothered me about Wok and Roll. 1) The two noodle dishes we ordered (Pork rice noodles and chicken lo mein) tasted no better than Chinese food truck food. But the price was 3X food truck food. 2) ABSOLUTELY DO NOT order the bubble milk tea. It tasted like cough syrup. As a serious veteran of bubble milk tea, I still can't comprehend how it's possible for the milk tea to taste like how it did. What?? I know I know....a chinese and japanese fusion place in Chinatown??? Seems lame, but trust me this place has some pretty good deals if you are just craving sushi!!! They have lunch specials with two rolls and miso and things like that for $6.99 a person! That is just crazy! And they also have chinese food specials too, and coming here for a late lunch, I could definitely tell that people come here quite often for a quick and cheap lunch (they also take call in orders for pick up too!) My boyfriend Matt J. and I went here on my way out of DC, and got the sushi special for two meal which for $26 was quite the bargain--2 miso soups, chef 8 piece selection of sushi, and two other rolls and seaweed salad and shrimp tempura and tea!!! I know, you want to go there right now, eh?? Definitely good food, but the sushi rolls were just average, but hey it is cheap! The tempura was the best part and the seaweed salad, and the tuna chef's pick was also tasty mctasty. The miso was fine, but could have had more/bigger pieces of tofu in it. I went here for a quick happy hour earlier this week just because I wanted to try the happy hour specials. Turns out their specials are pretty limited: $2 Bud, Bud Lite, Miller Lite; $4 mango or passionfruit martinis; $1 per piece sushi. Although the selection wasn't much, I thought the passionfruit martini I ordered was really tasty and they didn't skimp on the alcohol. The sushi was also tasty, but very small. I was excited about finding a new hole-in-the-wall place where I might get some good sushi at decent prices (at least happy hour and lunch specials) so went there for lunch today. Unfortunately the worst thing that could happen at a restaurant happened: one of my lunchmates was in the middle of eating his chicken curry when he discovered a baby cockroach in the sauce!!! And he almost ate it because it looked like a black bean from the back (thank goodness he turned it over). After that happened, the rest of us (we'd barely touched our plates) told the waitress we wanted to leave immediately. She kind of panicked, then got the manager who was very apologetic. So at least they handled it well. But UGH, I don't think many restaurants can come back from an experience like that. Sure, I've watched Kitchen Nightmares on the telly and I know it can be pretty gross back there. And now that this has happened, I think it'll be a long time before I can stomach walking back into this place again. Except maybe for that passionfruit martini... As I have yet to eat food coming out of Mary Surratt's "Wok", this review is really just for her "Roll" (the semi-hidden karaoke space upstairs). One thing to know, this place is very much catered to the Asian crowd. Yes, they have a decent amount of english language songs, but they are generally of the pop variety. Coming here with a couple of my very non-Asian coworkers for a holiday party, they struggled to find songs that they were familiar with. And for many of them, this was their first foray into the private room style of karaoke. But the reason for the poorer reviews is not so much song selection, but unfortunate service. Though we made the reservation ahead of time and they knew we had a large group coming, they were utterly unprepared and suffered to make it through one round of drink orders. Not to mention a language barrier and a lack of understanding of how to make even the simplest of drinks (i.e. not knowing what soda meant when someone ordered a gin and soda). When it takes a guest (me in this case) to help coordinate drink orders and even have to help point out which bottles of alcohol people were asking for, something isn't right. I don't know if I would never go back to Wok and Roll (since it is a semi-convenient place to have some karaoke), but it wouldn't be my first choice. Sorry my fellow Chinese brothers, wish I could've given you some more support. read more

Two and a half stars would be pretty generous. This is what happens when you let high school friends pick dining establishments drunk. Came here with Mo, Flint, and BK before a game to chow down. They got orange chicken, chow mein, and fried rice (you can guess what kind of folks I was with from that order alone), and I opted for moo shi pork. Proteins were a little overcooked, sauces ran on the sweet side. Service was friendly enough, but the tables were weirdly sticky despite an empty house. A good friend of mine who I had not seen in some time asked me to meet her here for an impromptu dinner and I couldn't say no. Nor could I be picky about where to go. But I'll be honest, when I first heard about this place - I wasn't looking forward to it. I typically dislike getting sushi at places that have Chinese food as well. I sucked it up and let her pick the place (it's her favorite place for sushi). We were seated immediately. She brought her adorable 2 year old son, who didn't want to sit still for some time without being able to play the drums using chopsticks and his plate. I could see the anger and annoyance in the servers eyes, but they were really good sports. They made it through his short lived drum session without giving us a hard time. Definitely child friendly place. We ordered pretty much every special roll on the menu. We just started pointing to everything on the main special roll menu that had photos. Dragon Roll - Crabmeat, cucumber with eel and avocado on top. Hawaiian Roll - Shrimp tempura, avocado with spicy tuna, crunchy and tobiko on top. Dynamite Roll - Kani cucumber, avocado with spicy scallop on top. Salmon Lover Roll - Eel, cream cheese, fresh salmon, avocado and ikura on top. Sakura Roll - Tuna, salmon, yellowtail, kani, tobiko and avocado in bean seaweed. Tuna Lover Roll - Spicy tuna, avocado, fresh tuna and tobiko on top. Rising Sun Roll - Spicy shrimp, cucumber with seared tuna on top. Bamboo Roll - Baked eel, cucumber with avocado on top. Crunchy Salmon Avocado Roll - Salmon, avocado with crunchy tempura. I was satisfied with most of the rolls. While I didn't LOVE their sushi, I was overall pleased. I typically like more of the raw and simplier rolls when having sushi. Here, I really liked the more cooked and americanized rolls. The ones I liked most were; Crunchy Salmon Avocado Roll Hawaiian Roll Dynamite Roll I don't really care for creamcheese in my sushi, and most of their rolls had it. Additionally, the tuna had a funny taste. As well as the yellowtail and basically any other raw fish. It wasn't awful, but not really the freshest. The unagi also tastes odd here. I'm not sure what it was but I couldn't do the eel rolls, it was way too fishy for me. And normally I can eat a huge bowl of unagi over rice. Again, I didn't come here expecting the best. So I wasn't disappointed for the most part. The prices were decent. The service was good and quick. Atmosphere was nice and comfortable. Most likely, I won't be coming back. read more

Karaoke bar on the second floor baby! Friday night they charge $35 an hour for a small private room that could comfortably seat 8 people. The karaoke machine was simple enough to use and had selections of English, Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese songs. I couldn't find some of my favorites but there were enough choices to keep us singing all night. Note that they do add tax and 18% gratuity to your bill. Guys, this food is so bad. We have been looking for a new Chinese delivery place since we moved to a new neighborhood. One bite of pork fried rice and sesame chicken and we knew it was terrible. Just terrible. We couldn't eat the fried rice at all, and we both choked down some sesame chicken so that we wouldn't have wasted 100% of the $35, just 90%. It's not worth it. Heads up!! The other posters here have merely spiked the reviews based on one dish--don't believe their overly-spiteful negative hype. Sushi seems typical for what you would pay around DC & the closest other Sushi options are in Metro Center & Farragut. (at Cafe Asia or one of the food court multi-plex areas in MC) Most rolls are between $4-6, in addition to some upper end stuff at $10. I enjoyed one of their 7 Japanese Lunch combos at $6.95. They also have dollar sushi at happy hour (but that only seems like a deal if you get Nigiri or intentially pick more expensive stuff--which i'm not sure is available). Its pretty decent I will say that the chinese selection is on the pricer side for chinese in the area. The experience is so horrible I'm actually writing the review while having my meal. DC and gokd, authentic Chinese don't normally go together, but I was feeling adventurous and decided to try it. I come in, doesn't look bad yet not all too inspiring for a good meal. After returning to my seat from the restroom, the waitress asked me for my order. I'm like, "Can't a brother sit, open the menu, have an internal debate of chow foon or General Tso and bust out his phone for a sec?" First signal flaring. Upon opening the menu, my eyes began to melt as the font, layout and order did not work together. Mind you the waitress is still there. While waiting for my beef chow foon, another waitress place sushi rolls on my table. I was confused and thought that it came with the lunch special, which wrote something on the bottom of it. Not giving it much thought, I began eating when the other waitress came up, snatch the food and told the other waitress that I didn't order this and looked at me like I did something wrong. She walks to the back with the sushi, and I'm wondering what is she going to do with the unbeaten ones. Hopefully they don't give it to someone else. My friend and I showed up a little behind schedule for dinner in Chinatown before a hockey game and decided on Wok-n-Roll. I have wanted to eat there ever since reading Assassination Vacation. We walked right in off the street, straight back to the bar, and proceeded to chow on $1 pieces of sushi and guzzle $2 beers. The Wok-n-Roll sushi chefs work hypnotically fast. Wok and Roll is one of two places I know of in the city that has Asian-style Karaoke where you get your own private room for a group of friends and control the machine yourself (the other is Muzette in Adams Morgan). At Wok and Roll, the restaurant is downstairs and karaoke rooms are upstairs. Pros of Karaoke at Wok and Roll: *Great location right in Chinatown/ Penn Quarter *Really nice, new looking private rooms, with nice furniture and with lots of size options *Fancy-looking karaoke machines with some current top 40 songs, which you usually can't get for karaoke *Service was great - press the button and they show up to take your order - food and drinks - and bring it back quickly Cons of Karaoke at Wok and Roll: *There is just one big screen (or at least this was the set up in our room) so that everyone sitting on the couches faces that screen. Since there is no small screen facing the other way for the main singer to use, this means you can't have one person (or small group) stand up in front and sing unless they either know all the words by heart or constantly look behind them to see the words. So it kind of turns into a big-group sing-along, since no one is ever up front. (Still fun, though) *The system was missing a few of karaoke classics (for example, there was no "Living on a Prayer" by Journey!) I came for karaoke, and it was a great time! I reserved the room the day before and had no issues with it. The room has to be charged to one card, so keep that in mind if you're going with a big group. Drinks can be ordered at the bar and paid for separately (not charged to the room), which also worked well with a group. Food can be ordered at the bar and delivered right to your room. Ordered the Gen Tso's Chicken and Combo lo mein lunch combos along with a sunset roll. This is your classic Americanized Chinese food. Got sesame beef and general tsao's chicken. Neither were particularly flavorful or crispy, but delivered the familiar umami and sugary flavors you would expect from the dishes. The portions were decently sized and the prices just a tad bit higher than you'd want for uninspired Chinese food. Pros: Private Karaoke rooms, great choice of songs, Cons: Expensive food/drinks (for karaoke rooms), limited open Karaoke hours, customer service I never thought I would have so much trouble finding a karaoke room to rent in the DMV area. I was greatly surprised to find this place. Although hours of this place were not exactly as I wished it was better than many other places in the DC area. I was looking to rent a Karaoke room during daytime, but apparently, the logic behind such places is that it can only be done during night time and most of these places open from 5-6pm. Wok and Roll, on the other hand, had the most satisfactory hours of all, offering Karaoke hours from 2 pm Friday through Sunday. I visited this place on a Saturday with friends specifically to sing Karaoke. We reserved a medium room for 14 people and it cost us 116$ for 2 hours (45$ per hour plus tax and gratuity). Since we invited 14 people the price was minimal per person and it was well worth it. The "medium room" was very nice, modern and spacious. We were explained what to do and how to work the Karaoke device and it was very easy, the system had an enormous amount of songs and a huge list of artists and even popular new songs. We decided to order food inside and it was very pricey. I ordered General Tso's chicken with a side of steamed rice. The price of the dish was 15$, although there was a lot of chicken, rice came in a very small bowl and for simple Chinese food, I think the price was a bit too much. As far as the drnks go one Margarita cost me 10$ and there was no happy hour options. The other drawback was the customer service. Although the place is Chinese you still expect people to be able to give you a customer service on the level of the US standards and by those, I mean kindness, positive approach and quick service. When we were ordering food we had to wait for 5-10 minutes to get someone to take our order although there were two people at the register one was busy cleaning while the other one was a newbie and did not know how to process the order. And they did not greet us in a welcoming matter either. But with all Cons discussed we still enjoyed ourselves at the place. The Beef and Broccoli dish at this place is on par with the ones made in San Francisco. Every other restaurant I've tried had mediocre versions with beef that was too hard or not fully cooked. This restaurant serves both Chinese and Japanese food but I noticed they didn't have teriyaki on the menu. It's more of a sushi place in regards to Japanese food. Karaoke night was totally dead, but that was OK since we had a good group of friends. No complaints there. There was also the mandatory gratuity on any and all checks. Order one drink? Gratuity is already added. I've never seen that before, and it seemed like a great way to sneak double-tips from unsuspecting patrons. But oh well, no big complaints there. What really got me was that the bartender clearly told my friend and I that if we sang karaoke we got $5 off of a drink. So we sang, and then the bartender acted as though she never said that, and in broken English explained that we misunderstood the deal because she doesn't speak English so well. Wok n Roll ROXX! I was wandering around Chinatown in the diffused sunlight, exploring my new work vicinity. I wandered up and down and around the small blocks examining the differences between 'Chinatown' and the reality of what I was seeing which was 'China/Viet, China/Japanese, China/Thai, China/Burma, etc. What a melange of 'fusion' food to choose from! I walked in and out of a Vietnamese hallway restaurant--it turned out to be vietchinese and I wasn't into it. I'm used to my authentic bunh tit luong from Falls Church! But anyway, I was craving something light and so I decided to just go ahead and check out Wok n Roll, despite the fact that it was 'Chinese sushi' which I have had many bad experiences. BUT, this was the best damn chinese sushi I have ever had in my LIFE! The rice was actually right! Could taste the rice vinegar and the rice was sticky, not a mushy paste! This place is teensy with a menu larger than the floor plan. I don't understand. My lunch was hybrid. I had great sushi and miso soup, but then I ordered Agedashi tofu. WHOA! Instead of a few small tofu pieces with bonito and some kind of sauce, there were like eight large pieces of tofu friend wonton style with something like ponzu sauce served with it. It was totally the chinese part of the meal. Different. But hey, I could have put peanut sauce on it and it would have been that tofu in the 'peanut salads' at Thai restaurants. But I digress...wok n roll is the only sushi restaurant that I know of that does NOT have TUNA as a staple in their combos. I was SO impressed because I am a hardcore fresh salmon lover. So I had letter 'A'--2 pcs. fresh salmon, california roll, and miso soup for $6.95. Can't beat that! I will be going here often for lunch and anyone that wants to join me for their teensy happy hours, please do! read more

This establishment is God awful. If I could give 0 stars I would. I reserved a room for 15, and the room smelled of cigarette smoke from the beginning. I asked to move rooms and someone came and sprayed fabreeze. I asked again to move and I was told nothing could be done. I asked repeatedly for help and got nothing. We NEVER had service in the room- everyone had to order at the bar and not a single person came to check on us in 2 hours. This is the absolute worst karaoke experience I have ever had. And the worst bar experience I have ever had. I write this still in the bar without any hopes that anyone will make it better. I want my money back. read more
