Since I am native Dallasite,This place lurks at the edges of my earliest memories. It now sits literally in the shadow of some of the tallest buildings in downtown. However, I remember when it sat by itself on a high green lawn,no sky scrapers as neighbors. Built by Alfred Horatio and Nettie Belo in the 1890s it appears newer and more modern than that date. Born in North Carolina and rising to Colonel in the Confederate army,Belo came to Texas after the war. Here he became involved in the newspaper business, starting what later became the Dallas Morning news and the Belo media empire. Today this lovely old homestead is a shared space between the Dallas Bar Assoc and an event space.

The Fort Worth version started during the city's heyday as a drover's stop on the cattle trails to Kansas in the early 1870s. Anymore, Fort Worth's Acre is nothing more than a dot in the map, marked by a landmark off Houston Street (pronounced properly, like Hyü-sten). Still, it's always good to know about history.

But, because the adjacent Dealey Plaza was rightfully designated a historic landmark, this unassuming sloped green space has historical weight and has remained untouched. It really is nice that there's no Bubba Gump next door, or people selling bubble wands from carts. There are two X's in the road if you want to get a good shot.

Along with "Three Mile Island" and "The Bermuda Triangle" and "Area 51" and "Ground Zero," you can include "The Grassy Knoll" in the list and while some millennials might not know what it means, they've heard the words from their elders. For us, it instantly conjures up an era like a cultural code word. This is the spot where the world lurched on November 22, 1963. Where Abraham Zapruder famously stood with his 8mm color camera to film President John F. Kennedy driving past in an open top limousine. You can stand here in the same exact spot where he did, you can picture that car going past, see the trees and hear the shots ring out in Dealey Plaza. The pink dress, the jumping Secret Service agents and the car accelerating under the railroad bridge heading to Parkland Memorial Hospital. Surrounded by much more modern buildings and standing in a small fountain/park area, this log cabin…read moreis definitely anachronistic. The marker helps to explain the context. It reads, "Most colonists first settled in this "Three Forks" area of the Trinity River as members of the Peters Colony after 1841. Immigrants from such states as Arkansas, Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri, and Tennessee brought with them a tradition of building log shelters. "Land title was granted to settlers who worked at least 15 acres and built "a good and comfortable cabin upon it." This region was abundant in oak, juniper (popularly called cedar), walnut, ash, bois d'arc, and elm trees, which furnished sturdy building timbers. "John Neely Bryan, a colonist from Tennessee, arrived near this site in late 1841 and built a log cabin in 1842. The area's first school and church was built of logs at Farmer's Branch (12 mi. NW) in 1845. J. W. Smith and J. M. Patterson brought goods from Shreveport (184 mi. E) in 1846 for resale at their log store in Dallas. "Milled lumber appeared in Dallas buildings by 1849, and bricks were available by 1860. That year a fire destroyed most of the town's original log cabins. "The nearby cabin was built of cedar logs before 1850, possibly by Kentuckian Gideon Pemberton. It was moved from its original site (7.5 mi. E) in 1926 and rebuilt at several locations, including Bryan's designated courthouse site (1 blk. SW) in 1936, and this block in 1971." It is marker 6775 and it was erected in 1986 by the Texas Historical Commission. Check out the marker and the log cabin when you're in downtown Dallas. I didn't know much about him before, but reading about his WWII flying feats right there beside the statue made me pause a little longer. Simple, respectful, and powerful in its stillness--one of those monuments that makes you want to look up the story later.

Not far from Arlington's City Hall, this marker points out a local hero who was awarded the Medal…read moreof Honor but was later killed in action. The marker reads, "Neel E. Kearby was born in Wichita Falls on June 5, 1911 to Dr. John Gallatin Kearby, Jr. and Bessie Lee (Stone) Kearby. He spent much of his childhood in Mineral Wells, but later moved to Arlington, graduating from Arlington High School in 1928 and beginning college at North Texas Agricultural College (now the University of Texas at Arlington). In 1937, Kearby received a business degree at the University of Texas at Austin and joined the U.S. Army Air Corps. He began flight training at Randolph Field in San Antonio, where he met his future wife, Virginia King Cochran. Once commissioned, Kearby completed a series of assignments and in 1942 was selected to command the 348th Fighter Group, which trained in New England prior to combat assignment in the Pacific Theater. During that time, Kearby trained his unit to effectively deploy the P-47 Thunderbolt fighter plane. Although the Thunderbolt was known to be bulky and cumbersome, Kearby developed aggressive tactics that his pilots used with great success against the enemy. During a six-month period in 1943 and 1944, Kearby bravely led missions in his P-47 (named the Fiery Ginger, after his wife), accumulating 22 aerial victories, including the destruction of a then-record six enemy aircraft in a single mission on October 11, 1943. The events of that day earned Kearby the Medal of Honor, the nation's highest award for valor. His final mission occurred on March 5, 1944, when he was killed in action near Wewak, New Guinea, after downing an enemy bomber. During his military career, Kearby also earned two Silver Stars, four Distinguished Flying Crosses, five Air Medals and the Purple Heart. His body was recovered after the war and buried at Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery in Dallas on July 23, 1949." Colonel Kearby was one of two U.S. fighter pilots to be awarded the Medal of Honor for actions while flying the P-47. In 1959, a building was named for him at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls. In addition to the plaque, the city of Arlington unveiled the statue of the Colonel in 2010.
