I love Wonderland's vibe! It's the type of place that would likely be eerie to see in the daylight, but at night it's a dive in the best of ways. I'd say avoid it if you have a phobia against clowns, otherwise get ready for a trippy, chill vibe. It's located on Main Street in Shockoe Bottom, but don't let the late night police trolling the area deter you. Inside, there's metal music, grit, friendly bar staff, and pretty good drinks. I can't say I've enjoyed them all -- some on their menu are waaaay too sweet for me -- but their lemon drop is always a good choice. It's also a good place for a good gin and tonic. Wonderland is definitely a gem, and I'm sure I'll be back soon. read more

So fun! EXACTLY what you want in a "dive bar". The decorations and motif are so cool--there are black lights and all types of kitschy stuff all around and the main bartender was super chill and cool. He even did an impromptu trivia question (handed out small pieces of paper to vote) with everyone and announced the results on the PA system microphone which was really fun. I was only in town for a few days and this bar was in the neighborhood I was exploring during the evening with a friend--it was recommended to us for a laid back type of "Dive Bar". We had an absolute blast-the clientele was super friendly as well and we ended up chatting with others sitting at the bar. It was a weekday night but there was still a good amount of people in the bar and a perfect place to end the night for sure! The drinks were very reasonable and straight to the point--not somewhere I would go to order a Martini but any type of mixed drink or beers works as well as shots! read more

First off I've driven past Wonderland a few times and always wondered exactly what it was. After I got out of the show I decided I was going to check it out since it was right near the public parking lot that I used. I have to say I am really glad that I did as I walked in I literally felt like I was walking through the door to Wonderland like Alice in Wonderland. Each corner of the bar is filled with Curiosities that will ignite your imagination from the table that's covered in Frank Sinatra memorabilia and quotes to the clowns on the wall everywhere you look you'll see something new and probably will each time you come in there discover something that you didn't see the time before. The service was fantastic I told the gentleman behind the bar that I had a long drive home and couldn't drink and he was more than willing to serve me something that was not alcoholic and make sure I was taken care of. To my knowledge They don't serve food but if you're really hungry there is a pizza place next door. However if you're in the mood for tasty drinks, wonderful service, a distinctly unique ambience, and some of the best punk music in the area this is your place! I hear tell they even have space for live punk music to be played I haven't seen a show yet there but I definitely want to come check it out! read more

After a boring night in Shockoe bottom, I stumbled upon this wonderland of a restaurant. Not only was the ambience spectacular but the food was also some of the best you can find in Richmond. By far one of the coolest spots in Richmond. The owner really has a keen eye for interior design and the style is very avant-garde. His risks in design are well executed. It feels like you're walking into a museum of oddities and I'm not entirely certain you're in the same dimension when you pass through that door. It's quite possible that the owner is some kind of mad wizard that has perfected dimensional travel. The food is excellent and that's an understatement. If it's true that the place is in fact on another plane of reality, they must have some kind of magic that goes into each dish they prepare. If the owner is truly a mad wizard, he must have some very powerful culinary demons or familiars taking his calculated and masterful direction. Angels would fall just to eat here. If I could give the place 10 stars, I would give them 11. Humble yourself when you enter the mad wizards realm. Humility is rewarded with potions. read more

This bar defines gnarly dive bar. Any part of me that could have been considered innocent was ripped from my soul the second I walked into Wonderland. It was dark, the people were leathery and the smoke created a fog that made the entire place a horror flick. From the severed heads to the spidery skeletal demons, I believed thrilling bars to still exist. The scene is punk and biker, but they are an excepting crowd. The pool table looks like Edward Scissor-hands played on it and the toilets in the bathroom usually vomit way earlier in the night. The beer is cheep, the food is salty, the music is loud, and the women could all pass as the chick in the Nightmare Before Christmas. Awesome. So if you have ever skipped down the street before, don't go here. read more

The best gathering of rockabillies, psychobillies, metalheads and punks I've ever come across. My boy's band plays this place when they roll through town and we stop in whenever we're visiting my folks. They charge the same price for the giant PBR cans as lots of places charge for the regular size. The music is excellent, the crowd is friendly and low-key, the dress is casual scene and the bartenders are quick. Parking in the neighborhood sucks (even the paid lots sometimes fill up) and the neighborhood itself is occasionally sketchy, but it's worth it for the food alone. read more

TERRIBLE.... Allow me to explain. I came for a burlesque show and the doors were supposed to open at 8. There were people inside playing pool, but the doors were locked... It was raining and people were just standing outside waiting for the doors to open... at 9 the doors were still locked! The show was supposed to BEGIN at 9. At 9:10 they opened the doors... We were shown to a cramped back room where there were a scattering of seats... We got seats in the second row and couldn't even see the stage which wasn't even raised! While STILL waiting for the show, I got drinks from an angry looking old man, who seemed soooo thrilled to be there. At 9:40 the show finally started. The sad part was that it was an amazing burlesque, the best, in fact. However, I could hardly see. Also, we had to leave early, because here it was 11:30 and a week night and it wasn't close to over, thanks to the delay!!! They should have held the show at Gallery 5, which is the BEST place to see burlesque. read more

FAVORITE BAR (BESIDES MY OWN)!!! Never know whats gonna be going on, but trust Chad will keep it interesting.... great music, great drinks, awesome staff... kooky funky and unique! They are community minded, unite local artists frequently to raise funds.... oh and no visit to the bottom is complete w/o a bathroom selfie. BTW if you even think about posting a review about a "surly bartender", 'old man w/bad attitude', or "being alienated by the manager" you truly need to ask yourself "what did i do wrong?" Very few places hit my standards for hospitality, even fewer owners are as welcoming of EVERYBODY as thiers. Seriously, the coolest place. Awesomely creepy Halloween decorations year round, a weird Ronald McDonald statue, and some wonderful taxidermy. They usually have hockey, or WWE playing on the TV and the music scene there is freaking rad. Beer is good and cold, I always stick to my ol' trusty PBR tall boy which is wonderfully cheap.
