Great venue for seeing live metal. Usually gets pretty packed since there is a thriving metal scene in Richmond. We make the drive down from the DMV since it's a lot easier to get to than spots in DC or Baltimore and parking is cheap (or free) and plentiful.

Roomy, friendly, helpful The bands are are hard, the alcohol is reasonable. There's space to thrash and plenty of space to sit. I can stand for short periods of time, but I need to sit. The staff was so nice and helpful.

    Capstan upstairs absolutely killing it!

I was incredibly impressed by this space. Went to see one of my favorite band perform and the experience was exceptional. Despite being a "small" club, the upstairs where the event was hosted was huge, which I definitely appreciated since we are still in the middle of a pandemic. Lots of places to sit between sets, huge bar, merch area wasn't cramped like it is at many venues. Also lots of security, which is always important to keep everyone safe at hardcore shows. Clean bathrooms, they do have a food menu too. Was super impressed and as an out of towner, and now knowing this is a solid venue, I will definitely make sure to watch there schedule to potentially make the trip up again.

Canal Club is a little concert dive right near the canal. The venue itself is about as thoughtful as the business name. That is to say, it's nothing special but is a decent place to see rock bands. I attended the Emery show earlier in the week in the upstairs room. Since I skipped two of the four openers, I don't know if there was a line outside to get in. I walked right in, gave my name and ID, and was given a wristband to say I was of age. I appreciate that they didn't stamp my hand like other venues. It was surprising that they didn't want to see my mobile ticket, though. But I guess they did see my ID so that counts. It's not the type of place that has a coat check on chilly nights. Most people seemed to keep their jackets on even though it wasn't too cold inside. I put mine on my purse. My first stop was the bar. It didn't take me more than three minutes to get served -- rare for concert halls -- and my cider cup was $5. They don't offer local crafts, but they do have Angry Orchard, Lagunitas IPA, and one other well-known one that I can't recall right now. The room has several beams in the center, and they can definitely hinder stage views like others have said. I personally appreciated the pillars for two reasons: 1. It was way past my workweek bedtime, so it helped support my attempt to stand upright/not sleep. 2. It blocked the mosh pit. I was right next to it but never got bumped. The show I attended was super intimate and only $10. Once the band was done playing, one of the members even hopped down and started chatting with us. It was so awesome! Bathrooms here are also not terrible. Like they're grungy, yeah, but they don't smell bad and they have toilet paper/soap/running water, so I'm a fan. Would I return? Sure, if a band I really wanted to see was stopping in and the price was right.

I really enjoy the Canal Club. They were the last place I saw a show at before the pandemic shut down live music back in March 2020. I went to see Bad Omens. Now they are open back up for business and they have a great line up! They bring in some great metal and rock acts. Local bands as well as national bands that are on the rise. They have seating but to get a good view of stage, you need to stand in the main area. Pretty small stage do views are great. Sound system good as well. Cheap drinks and beers. Food is basic and not great. I'd eat beforehand somewhere else. But this is a great venue to check out metal and rock bands for cheap and have a good time. So glad they are back! Live music is back!

There were 2 seats available at the bar, which in any other restaurant is FCFS, so we took a seat. The hostess came up to us and said that the bar was already requested by 2 other guest who were waiting and asked us to move to a table. We moved to a table where it took us over 10 min to get our drink order in. Drinks did not come right out, took another 10 min to get a sweet tea. It was 2pm and they were not slammed busy during this time. Will prob take our business elsewhere next time. Did not feel welcomed by any means. This was not our first time here. It's a very popular restaurant, so today, when we entered, while we were greeted right away, there was a 30 minute wait. The time actually went by relatively fast, and by the time we were seated, large cups of ice water were already there at our table, as well as a carafe to refill them. There's no physical menus, instead you scan a QR code which brings you to their menu. They have lots of drink options, including several specialty cocktails, beers, and ciders. Our waiter was super sweet and attentive, and the food came out relatively quickly. For my drink, I ordered a local cider from a Virginia ciderie, as well as the It's A Wrap, which has cheddar, ranch, mixed greens, tomatoes, onions, peppers, and your choice of protein (I got tofu). I also got a side of the Mac and cheese, which I could tell was made in house. Super creamy and flavorful with a hint of spice. My wrap was also insanely good! I'm impressed by the amount of vegetarian options here. Any burger can be made both gluten free or vegan, and the choices of protein make it more accessible for everyone who comes in. I'm really happy we were recommended this place!

Noise level can be challenging so we try to go in the early side when possible. Went for our anniversary in during Richmond restaurant week in October (they gave us a complimentary glass of bubbly to celebrate) and again with the kids in December. They always have amazing cocktails. Their mixologist is on their game with so many choices! For our anniversary, we got Cloud Boat and Apartment in the City, and we loved them both. Both were completely as described, light and ez in the palate which is a skill for whiskey. For apps we got the PEI mussels and the smoked fish dip. Again both were delicious. I particularly love my fish dip - the groom focaccia was done beautifully in the dill was a nice compliment to the flavor. For entrées, we had the catfish sandwich and the Arctic char. The catfish sandwich was good, but nowhere near the quality of the Arctic char, which was savory and delicious and elevated by the brown butter and golden raisins. Since it was restaurant week the dessert was included in the price so we got the apple cranberry fry pie And the chocolate ganache bar. Both were a nice way to end the meal. Tasty but not mind blowing. With the kids we ordered Gnac attack, Proper Dose, American Love Call, and Bebot. Again they were all so good but for me the Proper Dose and Gnac attack were the best. For apps we got the fish dip and one of the specials and loved them both. Entrees were the Spanish mackerel, the arctic char and a special that was a gumbo and rice. We ate everything and had no room for dessert. Can't wait to go back.

The service was a little too leisurely for my temperament, and the tab did arrive at the table on one piece of paper when we had clearly requested that there be a separate tab for each couple, but those would be my only complaints. We all had cocktails, one from their specialty list and three that were standard issue. All were delicious and had an appropriate alcohol content for cocktails. The restaurant week menu provided a good variety of choices. Everything we had was really delicious. Portions were generous, so I could not eat more than about half of each course and not get overly full, but I assume they are sized for all but the hungriest diner. The venue's sound level was pretty high. I could have left my hearing aids at home so I wouldn't hear as much of the background noise. Noisy restaurants are pretty standard, I guess. We will definitely be returning to Alewife. It will probably take the place of Grisette in the rotation, which has been dropped because of institution of a fee for reservations canceled less than 24 hours in advance. (I don't think it should be treated as a privilege to dine somewhere when you have so many equivalent choices, but I guess they want to decrease the number of people who try to make them their dining choice. Objective accomplished.) The Hemingway quote at the bottom of the tab was a little weird. Not a Hemingway fan, but I guess it was an interesting thing to do. If you have read other reviews of mine, you may be aware that basically non-alcoholic cocktails that should have alcohol in them are reason enough for me to never return to a restaurant.

The menu has so many tempting options that it was hard to choose, but we both landed on the Hot Chicken Sandwich with cayenne butter--and we're glad we did. It had the perfect amount of heat: enough to bring some spice without overpowering the flavor. On the side, I ordered the green beans after our bartender/server highly recommended them. Normally, green beans wouldn't be my first choice, but they were seasoned perfectly and ended up being one of the biggest surprises of the meal. My partner chose the mac and cheese, which was the superior side (although both were excellent). The service was friendly, attentive, and genuine throughout the evening. Despite arriving on a Friday night without a reservation, we had no trouble getting a table. They only accept reservations for parties of 5-8, so I'm glad we decided to take our chances. One of my favorite parts of the evening was chatting with another guest at the bar. He and his wife shared several entrées with their young son, and they couldn't stop raving about the short ribs--which their son happily claimed for himself by the end of the meal! They also highly recommended the salmon, so we've already got ideas for our next visit. The only real downside has nothing to do with the restaurant itself: parking in Scott's Addition can be a challenge. I'd recommend allowing yourself some extra time to find a spot or, even better, taking a rideshare so you can start enjoying your evening right away. Lunch. Supper! has earned its reputation as a longtime Richmond favorite. Great food, excellent service, and a relaxed atmosphere make this an easy five-star recommendation. We'll definitely be back.

This is the perfect restaurant for a date, simply lit, quiet, reservations required. We were…read moreseated on time, waters with the small bottle left on the table, we ordered she crab soup.. it was my first time having it.. it was absolutely delicious. I'm a big fan now. My entree was honey brussel sprouts, mac n cheese, blackened salmon. the salmon and brussel sprouts were very flavorful and each bite was better than the last. the mac n cheese though..! It was disappointing, tasted like noodles with cheese poured on top. it didn't match the salmon, it had no taste, needed salt & pepper or something to help it taste like something. My iced tea was really good too. so the mac was the only thing that wasn't up to par. Finally dessert was a special on the board, caramel apple bread pudding. we shared one, it was a huge shareable piece that was warm and melted in my mouth very good. I will absolutely go back here and try something new next time to see what else they have.

This was a recommendation from my barber/stylist, Danny Smith (Nirvana Hair Studio) who had a shop…read morenearby a while ago. He said that he thought I would enjoy it, and he was right. We arrived around 5:00 or 6:00 in the evening. We didn't have a reservation on a Saturday (surprise, surprise), but there were open seats on the patio and at the bar. We chose the patio, and while patio chairs left something to be desired (some bolts need to be tightened or the chairs replaced, one), it was a pleasant night. Our server came out promptly. She was prepared, knew the specials, and was able to answer any questions we had. We ordered the pimento cheese and crostini for an appetizer. For dinner I ordered the signature burger with the sauteed broccolini as a side, and my partner chose the chicken pot pie. The chicken pot pie came out hot and smelled incredible. The signature Burger was medium, exactly as I ordered it. It was Juicy, tender, and tasted fantastic with its classic potato bun. The desserts sounded fantastic, especially the "fudgy tiramisu" as our server described it, but we were too full to try them. The GM came by our table to personally introduce themselves and ensure that our experience was excellent. I always respect that level of service and integrity. I feel remiss that I neglected to mention the patio chairs. Swing and a miss. The traffic noise on the patio can be somewhat grating, and we were approached by a panhandler/down on their luck individual as we were wrapping up the check. The Savory Grain had kind staff, wondrous food, a delicious sour ale, and even a clean restroom. I absolutely recommend it and plan to return again.
