My husband surprised me with this cabin for our Anniversary! This was definitely a 10/10! Super quiet, had all the necessities of BBQing and cooking! So close to a couple lakes and an overall perfect location! We came from 97 degrees to the 60s! My ONLY complaints were the shower head () it was awful! And the satellite didn't work very well so no TV which was fine but for families with kids might be an issue. But overall definite recommendation! read more

The area is truly beautiful. And there is direct access to the forest. Next to this site is a gated community so you do hear some minimal noise. The cabin was nice although I do think there should be an investment in updating. None of our glasses matched and most were plastic tumbler type. Our cabin was for 4 and yes, there were 4 folks, 4 spoons and 4 knives only. A maybe 2 inch circular soap is what was available for both hand washing and bathing. Seems one of the sleeping areas is the living room on a sofabed. The parking area and area around the cabins is very well lit at night - some may have suitable curtains, ours did not but was not as issue for us. There was no information on the cabin, the area, the rules, etc in our cabin which would have been helpful - there also didn't appear to be any onsite assistance anywhere. This is also a dog friendly place although you have to keep them on leash at all time. There is no enclosed area. The biggest negative for me/family was the unevenness of the walkways around the cabin. There a number of dips in the roadway and parking area and it is a steep incline. The kids play area is on a hill and the paved portion is so steep you gain way too much speed walking straight down - gotta zig zag. We both agreed if you had walking difficulties or had a walker, it was going to be challenging to get around. If you are planning a trip, be sure the check the local establishments times. We did not and all in the immediate area were closed Monday-Wednesday - this may just be the time of year though don't know. Be sure to pack what you want/need - although only 20 miles or so to Payson, its a long 20 miles. read more

The local bar & grills we full of welcoming locals so we got to meet some really nice people and enjoy our time getting to know the area. Beautiful Cabin, spacious single cabin. Nice furniture, comfy bed but most of all very clean kitchen and bathroom! Nice porch and came with washer and dryer which is awesome! BBQ. Quiet and away from highway noise. The big fake white buffalo on the hill was hilarious. We walked out at night forgot about it and then jumped when we saw it Staff assistance readily available, professional, kind and courteous. Great communication! Wonderful. There are so many good things to say about Wooden Nickel Cabins (Cabin 4) not even sure where to start. My husband wanted me to put in for him as husband likes: Designated parking per cabin-asphalt parking lot A/C and heating were great Options for cooking indoors and outdoors Immediate hot water This is truly a home away from home, everything you need from dishes, glasses, coffee mugs, silverware, toaster, coffee pot (single use), wifi, super comfy bed. We ate all of our meals at the cabin and outside. 5 of the cabins back up directly to the Tonto National Forest with two access points to walk in and venture. In mid-September and during the rut you'll get to hear the elk bugling, what an awesome sound first thing in the morning :) Blackout curtains on the bedroom window and the sliding glass door. Cabin was super clean and so well designed and decorated, kudos to whomever decorated the cabin. Cabin is two story, main bed and bathroom downstairs, additional bed and bunk beds upstairs with small closet. There is even a pet/child gate at the bottom of the stairs that we used to keep our little dog from going upstairs. There's a porch swing out front at all the cabins, was very nice in the evenings and mornings to sit out and enjoy the outdoors. There's a small picnic table in the back, Adirondack chairs, extra folding chairs in the closet if needed. Fire pit, propane grill (has propane can), small charcoal grill too. In the living room is an adorable small gas fireplace (was too warm to use) but pilot is lit and ready to go. Strategically placed notes around to let you know what the password is for the wifi, how to turn on the shower (you'll understand when you get to your cabin), how to turn on the heater. There is a small game room, key is provided for you. Has 2 arcade games, one of them has 30 pages of games, a foosball game and a shuffleboard table, perfect for those with tweens and teens. My tip would be to book your cabin directly through them as this may save you some money vs using a third-party site. Their communication is top notch all the way through with emails and texts. This is our first time staying with Wooden Nickel Cabins and can definitely say we WILL be back! We stayed for two nights and glad we did to really enjoy the cabin. This is a mom-and-pop small owner operation and is nice to help out locals. read more

Adorable cabin. We came during the week and it was very nice and quiet. Anything we needed, we got super quickly. The heater got really really hot in the night even when going to bed a little chilly so sleeping in the loft was a little uncomfortable (since heat rises) while the person sleeping ground level was still cold. That was probably the only little stressful thing. If I could recommend anything, some more surface space or tables (especially in the bathroom) would have been helpful. read more

As someone whose work is extremely stressful and taxing on the mind and soul, I strongly recommend wooden nickel cabins nestled in the mountains of Christopher Creek near Payson as a fantastic place to unplug from the world and reconnect with nature and God. Payson is a wonderfully real, friendly, non-pretentious mountain community without the inane touristy bulls*** you find in other 'small mountain towns' that have been taken over by the beatnik, grapenuts, soy latte starbucks crowd. The cabins themselves are gorgeously appointed and comfortable for a couple or a family. WNC are truly a diamond found in the rough. The host and her assistant are by far the most welcoming and accommodating. My partner and I work nearly 60 hours a week and we spent a Thursday thru Sunday at the cabin for some well needed R & R. We hiked (2) nearby trails Horton and Derrick - we also drove to the Tonto Natural Bridge which was breathtaking. I would like to give WNC more that 5 stars if I could. If you are unsure or have doubts - you shouldn't! I hope my review helps anyone looking to stay...you wont be disappointed. We are already checking calendars for a 2021 Fall visit. read more

Just got back from a nice relaxing weekend from these cabins. Such a nice cozy area very quiet. As a child playing board games if I were loosing I would act out and flip the board (so that nobody could win) that's just how I roll!!! These cabins were so relaxing I didn't even care I lost a couple rounds. The trails near by are very nice for a relaxing walk. The property was well kept with multiple units on site I'm sure that can be tough at times even with incliment weather it was easy access. I saw there were bbq grills on site, it was too cold for me to use them so I took advantage of the kitchenette. It has everything you need. I highly recommend this place for a get away. If I could give 10 stars I would. P.S. if you are spoiled like I am and have your coffee personally roasted for you (my brother is a roaster in Palm Springs) bring some coffee. I just spend a couple of nights here with family and had a wonderful time. This is a great get away....the cabins are clean, comfortable and the fully stocked kitchen was awesome. We cooked out over an open fire but they have BBQ's available as well. If you like hiking, bird watching, star gazing and just getting out in a nature setting this is the place to go. We love these cabins! Rustic and a bit outdated, but it adds to the charm of a cute little cabin. My husband and I went on a little night out after a motorcycle ride and we found this spot during our ride and stayed over for the night. We decided to rent their ranch house for Christmas and it was perfect for our large group & dogs. We were so excited to get SNOW on Christmas Day as well. We took the dogs on walks every day in the woods nearby, and rode our Rzr all over on the trails back there. It was just a wonderful stay overall! The couple who run this are awesome! Super laid back and just as sweet as can be! They're so friendly and that was part of the reason we decided to rent from them for Christmas. We knew they would take good care of us and we would be left to do our own thing without having a super strict on site staff bugging us or hounding. They were sweet as can be both times. We even left a pair of my hubs favorite UA sweats from our first motorcycle ride up there in September and they held onto them until we came back last Christmas! How awesome! My husband was happy and we appreciate quality service. So much! Highly recommend!! read more

I was looking for a quiet place to get away by myself and a friend recommended Wooden Nickel Cabins. Thankfully they had a last minute cancellation and I ended up with a unit! I knew it would be a good trip when I was getting ready to leave for the 3pm check in and my phone rang at 11:30 and it was the owner letting me know they had an early check out so my cabin was ready & I could check in anytime. Try and get that service from a hotel! The cabins - they are situated pretty close together but it didn't bother me. I had an end unit and a family of 6 (with three teenagers) right next door, but it was still very peaceful. The inside has plenty of sleeping area if you want company. I can't comment on the sleeping loft because I never felt the need to go up there. The living room area is the smallest but easy seating for at least 4. There was a nice gas fireplace for warmth and an additional electric heater in the downstairs bedroom. The kitchen had a stovetop, microwave, fridge and plenty of plates, cups, etc. The back has a picnic table, 2 plastic chairs, a gas grill, a charcoal grill, and a fire pit. There is some wood on the front porch when has a 2 person swing and 2 chairs. My goal was to sit in the sun and read some books without any distractions. The porch swing was the best place to do that. If you are going with a party of more than 2, bring your camping chairs. It is worth mentioning that the chair in my living room had a hole in the arm and some of the furniture was clearly well loved. It didn't bother me, it's the middle of the woods! But if your looking for luxury, you might be disappointed. There was a play area, and horseshoes I believe, but I didn't check out that area. All in all, if you are looking for a reasonably priced quick get away this is your place. Off the beaten path but close enough to civilization with friendly proprietors. read more

Where do I even begin, Wooden Nickel Cabins is an amazing place to stay! We spend 3 nights here and let me just say it was wonderful!!!! The cabins are super cozy they have everything you need.. brand new beds, there's 2 queen beds and 1 bunk bed super comfortable. There's a full kitchen with pots and pans, utensils, toaster and coffee maker and fridge. Bathroom has towels and they also have extra blankets in case you need them! If you want to stay in they have cable so you can watch whatever you want. They also have a grill in the back if you want to grill some food. The area around it's beautiful and breathtaking!!! You can go for hikes and trust me you'll love it, if you're an outdoors person. It was our 1st time staying here but I can tell you we are DEFINITELY coming back! This place is super cozy and welcoming. When it comes to me customer service is everything and let me tell you Shannon is the most KINDEST most WONDERFUL person there is. She made sure we were comfortable and she was there to answer any and all questions I had! People like her definitely make a difference! They also have a play ground if you have little ones and if you need any groceries or anything the town is about a 20 minute drive so it's not bad at all. Wooden Nickle is definitely a 10 out of 10 for me, I would recommend to ANYONE! If you're looking for a place to spend a couple of days or a weekend getaway in Payson or close to it this place is the place to stay seriously amazing! Super affordable. read more

Excellent location and nice amenities in our cabin - Elk Hollow. We took our four year old grandson and our 10 lb. dog and had a most excellent time. Our cabin is literally feet from the Tonto National Forest, and super close to restaurants in Christopher Creek. The cabin was clean, comfortable, and perfect for the size of our family visit. Nice firepit and BBQ with table and chairs in the back yard. We were very pleased with our stay and plan to visit again. Thank you, WNC. My friends and I were looking for a little get-away, specifically a cozy cabin in the woods where we could relax and sit by a bonfire, and the Wooden Nickel Cabins provided EXACTLY what we were looking for. Our cabin was super cozy with the gas log fireplace in the corner. It was even stocked with pots, pans, dishes, and utensils, which was very convenient. The backyard was right up against the National Forest, complete with a gas grill, charcoal grill, and a bonfire put (which was a deal-breaker for us). The owners/hosts, Kelly and Thomas, were very friendly and hospitable. I would recommend the Wooden Nickel Cabins to anyone looking for the same get-away experience we were as it did not disappoint!! read more

We met a group of friends who were camping nearby and rented cabin 3 for our immediate family. The rental stated room for 6, but when we checked in they added a charge because we had more than 2 people. Just a warning to double check the rate. The cabin absolutely did NOT have room for 6. 2 Q sized beds (for the $200 we had to pay, you would think they could put decent mattresses and/or a couch that is sleepable. As it was, it was barely sittable.) There were 2 (two) chairs at a table for sitting. They advertise dishes and utensils, which were there, though at a minimum and not great; sort of bad thrift shop along with the furniture and decor. We swept before we returned the key and we swept up a lot more debris than we could have left behind for one night. There was quite a lot of dust. I fell in a hole next to my car, in the unpaved dirt lot for parking. Our $200 might have been better spent in Payson for 2 hotel rooms. read more

I'm here staying with my husband and our two girls. We're very impressed with the property and our cabin. The girls have loved scouting the area and playing on the playground. I love having a stocked kitchen to make meals for us. There's a small market down the road on Christopher Creek where we were able to get a few things that we forgot. There's also a couple restaurants which we didn't originally know about. We'll keep that in mind during our next trip. We'll definitely be back! Oh and keep in mind there's not much technology here, but my phone's hot spot is working just fine. read more

Great cabins. My husband, son and I brought our two dogs up for the weekend. Cabins are very clean and well maintained. Air conditioning and ceiling fans make the units very comfortable. They have two separate sleeping areas, satellite tv, a full bath and kitchenette that is stocked with dishes, pots, pans, utensils and just about anything else needed ( except food, of course). We were happy with the accommodations and the caretakers were very sweet. The only minor drawback is that the units are a little close together, so there isn't much privacy but if you have a multi family gathering and rent several units could work very well. All but one of the units are dog friendly(wood flooring downstairs with no pets allowed in the carpeted loft). We'd definitely stay again. read more

We rented the "Ranch House" cabin at the Wooden Nickel. It was simply terrible. The facilities were filthy and the "amenities" were either broken, or non-existent: 1) The central-heat/ac system was broken during the entire multi-day stay (days were hot and the nights were cold). The owner of the Wooden Nickel did not have the professionalism to even arrange for a repairman to make repairs. 2) Most of the dishes in the kitchen are chipped or cracked. 3) The blankets in the bedrooms were filthly and unwashed. 4) the BBQ grill was completely rusted out and non-functional. When approached, the on-site Manager initially declined to provide a working unit. The best part of the Wooden Nickel was the view, but there are MANY other cabins in the area that are also available for rental (and in more picturesque locations), so I would NEVER recommend rent ing a cabin at the Wooden Nickel. I went up and had my wedding up at the ranch house, plus a couple other cabins with a group of 16 people. The cabins were wonderful and the staff were great. The cabins were furnished with everything that you need except for food and they were decorated so cute. The staff went out of their way to make our stay wonderful. Celebrated my boyfriends 30th birthday here and it was easily the best cabin in the entire Christopher creek area. So cozy felt like home the minute you walk in. Pictures don't do it justice there are 5 rooms 4 bathrooms sleeps 11 but could easily hold more with the couches living room is huge. Patio was really large setup corn hole and other games plenty of seating everything you could need supplied in the kitchen actually the whole house has everything you need which is why it felt so much like home. Best weekend ever 20 min from woods canyon lake 2 minutes to the Christopher creek steakhouse and store. read more

The cabins sit in a row all together in a straight line with about 8 to 10 ft. between each one. They do back up to BLM land but from the front window do not expect a scenic view. The cabins are not that old but the furniture in them is. If being super clean is an issue you might want to go elsewhere. The comforter on our bed had tons of black dog hair on it. At least I hope it was dog hair. Very cramped with 4 adults. The front room and the kitchen/dinning area is VERY small and kitchen is not well stocked for cooking. The pans looked like someone had cleaned them with an ice pick. The owner whom I talked on the phone before making the reservations did not remember us talking about or wanting the handicapped cabin. On the other hand, the cabins are dog friendly. (Which is the only reason I rated these cabins 3 stars.) The care takers are very sweet and went out of their way to make our stay work. The gas fireplace worked GREAT even in December. read more
