My friend was unwavering in her argument that she preferred the brisket sandwich at Woody's Smokehouse over the brisket sandwich at Bucc-ees. I had to try it and it was as good as reported. (My friends have good taste!) I was immediately taken by the rustic charm of the establishment. To the left of the entrance was an old-fashioned meat counter filled with an assortment of smoked meats (some exotic) and jerkies (is the plural of jerky jerkies?). A few steps in, the counter gave way to a 90° turn followed by a steam tray with barbeque and sides. As I made my way around the establishment I spied the one thing that Bucc-ees is missing. An area to rest my heels while eating... it was small, but inviting. My chopped brisket sandwich came with a free side of beans. Def love this place. Been here tons of times. If you are not from texas or the south, you may be put off by the slow pace at which they move, but don't be bothered. It's just how it is. Great place to stop for food, clean restrooms, etc. keep in mind that there are two of these locations directly across the highway from each other. Supposedly, the one on the east side is owned by the daughter, and the one across on the west side is owned by the father. I tried the pepper jack shrimp roll, and it was fantastic. Sort of expensive, but I only got one. I also tried the sausage and chopped beef sandwich. Don't get me wrong, it was good, but I immediately thought of how it could be better when I bit into it. Unfortunately, they left the onions on my sandwich, but I took them off. (They should prob specify that the onions are pickled red onions, bc it definitely enhances the flavor.) However, my recs would be this if you decide to order it. Tell them to toast your buns slightly, add jalapeños, and maybe a slice of cheddar. Put your sauce on the side, so that you can determine how much you need. I think it's the most expensive sandwich on the menu, so they def should be selling it the way I recommended it. lol Anyway, it's a staple to Texans, and a great place to go if you're on your way to Dallas or some east texas towns. With sandwich orders they give you a bowl of home cooked beans which is nice side - chips offered also. Fresh tea is made. Quick easy ordering at counter - walk thru for fast service. It's a shop that staff yell WELCOME when you walk in. Clean - good hot water (yes, that is a thing on the road) bathrooms. Fudge shop/ baked items are good. You can also buy jar goods - from pickles, jalapenos, jams and jellies offered. They carry one of our fav cookies from Garland TX by Wackyam - sometimes, finding a variety there we've not seen. read more

WTH happened to this place??? This is been my go-to spot for 20 years. I always stop each way from Dallas to Houston. There's nothing better than fresh jalapeño cheese bread, jalapeño cheese slices and some peppered turkey jerky. Seriously, that's how you know if you've lived in life. I've probably referred 100 people to Woody's over the years and lost count of how many times I've told the story of making the mistake of stopping at Bucee's for the same once only to get home and try it and discovered the Bucees version was disgusting. I wasn't pissed about throwing away $50+ at Bucees, and I literally threw it away, but rather at the fact that it was too long a drive to get back to Woody's and get the good stuff! So why my poor review today after 20 years of 5 stars???? Good question. For starters, I went in this morning to get my usual. I grabbed the only loaf of jalapeño cheese bread they had out, unusual to only have one, and it was 4 days old. I've never been here and seen any older than a day. I got it anyway along with my cheese. It was DRY as crap and very dense. Normally it's like a bounce house trampoline, soft and airy, but today it could have stopped a Mack truck! Also, I hate that they don't put paper between the cheese because it becomes one glob. Typically it just get it from the deli as they put paper slices for employees, just not clients... don't get me started. They are also sold out of turkey jerky because of supply issues. I get that as there's nothing they can do about that. Since it was early in the morning, I also got a jalapeño cheese kolache, you're probably starting to see a pattern here. Yes, I love jalapeño cheese anything. We'll it seemed like a good idea. I get in my truck to eat it and the sausage was completely dried out and inedible. I spit it out. I was like... nevermind, I won't share that analogy so as to keep it family friendly, but needless to say it was dry and wrinkly. This wasn't from them overheating it as it was barely heated by my request. It's just SEVERAL days old and has been sitting in the counter for probably a week. What happened???? Did Sheila sell? Is there new corporate ownership? Their quality standards have turned to sh*t and my beloved Woody's has now been relagated to typical gas station status. I'm heartbroken, but sadly must acknowledge today's experience was from systematic changes in leadership to allow such a downfall. We have been coming to Woodys for years. We stopped into one side of the highway on our way in, and the other on the way out. Spent about 60.00 total. Had I known about the in your face political stuff I would not have stopped here. And will not again. It's a shame too. Anyway, we ordered a chopped beef BBQ on a bun, and the half chicken. My companion enjoyed her bbq, my chicken was just okay and quite dry! The "sauce" with it tasted like apple cider vinegar with something mixed in, very unpleasant. The pinto beans were rather bland. This place is located in Centerville right off I-45. There are two locations, one on the southbound I-45 and the other location is across I-45 northbound side. They have large amount of sundry items. They have a butcher to provide cuts of slabs of meat. They have a small grill. Best Turkey sandwich I've had hands down. It's like a small Buc-ee's as far as building size. Woody's is a must stop whenever we're headed to Houston. This time we got bbq stuffed potato and wow, THAT is a potato. We got it with chicken and the beans. We also tried the chopped rib sandwich which came with beans and I got an extra side of green beans. The green beans needed some bbq sauce for just a little flavor. They are more of a smoke house than a BBQ, so compared to Terry Black's BBQ in Austin, they are much less salty in ribs and briskets, also less oily. The briskets are leaner but soft, the ribs are pork ribs, you can taste the pork flavor. The bacon wrapped quail looks interesting but it's a bit too salty and dry. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The sweets say buy 4 and get 2 free but it's only applicable to the squares and not the top row chocolates. read more

This place is okay as long as you stay away from the restaurant portion. They have good jams and stuff but the b-b-q is the worst! Absolutely the worst! My wife and I had a sliced brisket sandwich that has the toughness of shoe leather. They also don't cut off the greasy fat. I love Woody's and have been stopping there for years during my travels home from College Station. Yesterday, I stopped at 1:30, ordered my usual, a roast beef sandwich on wheat with swiss chees mustard and tons of veggies. I arrived in Dallas at 4:40 and since 7:30 have not left the bathroom. My friend and I were going to a Mercedes convention & they picked this place to be the pit stop before heading up to Dallas and may I say it was a great choice. This location is like a smaller Buc-ee's, you go inside and there's a section where you can buy snacks and drinks, they also have like a little gift shop area, and if you want BBQ they got that as well. I decided to order something small so I got a couple of ribs, was it the best? Nope. But it was so good, seasoning was on point & most importantly it fell off the bone which means it was cooked correctly. To be honest I wanted to ask them what seasoning they put on those ribs because it was mmm mmm good. Definitely always a must to stop here on our way to and back from Stephen F Austin University. The bathrooms are always nice and clean while their food selection is extraordinary. Although they offer lots of delicious BBQ we always opt for their made-to-order sandwiches. We absolutely love their grilled cheese, patty melts and burgers which is an excellent meal to eat while driving since we're usually in a hurry. I was hungry so I suggested stopping at Woodys to try it out. As soon as you walk in you are greeted by people behind the deli counter. So you can either order from the deli side or the BBQ side. I tried the German Ring Sausage, Pinto Beans come with that and I also chose the Mac and Cheese. My husband is always looking for good jalapeño and cheese sausage he chose a slice of some sort of chocolate pie. Both sausages had great flavor and the pinto beans that come with the BBQ purchase were delicious. The Mac and Cheese I got was super cheesy and had that great homemade taste. Like I said there is a Deli and a BBQ counter, the store also sells homemade baked goods like pies and pastries, along with various drinks and snacks a typical convenient store would have. Not saying this is a typical convenient store because it also has a Meat Market and plenty of gifts for those looking for nice decor and gifts. This used to be the spot for fabulous DRY jerky. Ever since stupid Covid they are now packaging their jerky and it NOT thin. After opening the package the water really comes out. Woody's has become a pit stop for me anytime I'm traveling through I45. I've tried everything on the menu within 3 stops, my go-to's are the smoked jalapeño boudin, bacon wrapped shrimp(stuffed with cheese and slice of jalapeño) and the 1" cut and smoked pork chops! Still the joint best place to get gas on I-45 between HOU and DAL, along with the Buc-ees a few miles north. Previous review: If a Republican fell in the forest and nobody was there to see it, Woody make a sound? This is easily one of the most Republican establishments I've ever been to. I was genuinely offended wandering around, and found it hard to stomach some of the things on the walls. They love their war and their patriotism, for sure. But you know, whatever. It's ok. Although I can only imagine the sort of uproar that would be caused if I did the left-wing equivalent to this... I would probably be told to get out of America. Well that's where we live. And that's the way it goes here. One thing I really don't like about this place is how expensive the jerky is. And honestly it wasn't really very good. Probably better than the stuff you buy in the store, but nowhere near as good as the amazing ones that I've had inside the West Side Market in Cleveland. If you aren't a Bucees fan this is the place to gas up, grab some grub and buy a few souvenirs. They have a little bit of everything for anyone passing by. Today my purchases were a sliced brisket sammich, pinto beans(complimentary), a pecan roll, a pecan cluster and a cup of water. Food: The brisket was tender melt in your mouth which made me want more. I was sad to find a huge hunk of fat (trimmings) in my sammich. YUCK...not a fan, I want all meat.
