For the longest time, I thought getting a decent hot dog in St. Louis meant visiting Carlos' hot dog stand at the corner of 6th and Olive during the week. But I realized that even though it's a bit of an inconvenience to travel to downtown for JUST a hot dog, it kind of makes sense to seek out new hot dog horizons. I found Woofie's. Woofie's is GOOD. It's a little roadside stand just outside of the City. If that's not your thing, then I suggest going elsewhere. Hot dogs should be eaten on the go anyway. The first thing I tried was a Coney Island style dog. It's basic, I know, but something about simplicity ensures you take in the entirety of a quality product. That is what Woofie's has: quality product. It's a Vienna Beef dog, which is comparable to a Nathan's- think Cadillac of hot dogs. You can also get a variety of toppings, which I find a little over the top. The service here is fast-foodish- translate: bare minimum. Especially when you ask them "What's good here?" I got a shrug. I can recognize Woofies has a history. I like the old timey drive through setting and will go here for a dog way before I hit up the new roller grill at the Quik Trip down the road (in either direction I might add!). The dogs are pretty good. I've had the chilli dog (and made a huge mess) and also the big herm which was one large dog in two buns. Last Friday my husband, Alexis and I embarked on our 'Annual Woofie's & Ted Drewes Trip'. If you're not from the St. Louis area you won't have any idea of what I'm talking about so never fret. Woofie's is a Chicago hot dog stand in St. Louis. That, alone, makes it interesting. Considering my husband is from the Chicago area...it makes it one of his favorite places to visit. It's about a 40 minute trek from where we live so between our crazy schedules we don't get a lot of opportunities to go. So, we make certain to fit it in at least once a year because they are just that good. You simply pull up to the window of the orange & yellow building and place your order. There is no speaker box that you see at a standard drive-thru, but this is no standard restaurant either. It will take them a few minutes to fill your order so be prepared to wait (it will be worth it!). Once you receive your order you can either take it home, park in your car and eat (there are plenty of parking spots) or you can pull over and eat at the tables provided. The birds love the Woofie's french fries (so do we!) so tossing a couple is always recommended. Just be sure to pick them up and toss them in the trash can available should they be full already. If you feel like sitting inside (there aren't many seats available - it is a hot dog stand after all) take a look at all of the autographed pictures gracing their walls. Alexis & I ordered the standard Woofie dog and Steve ordered the Polish Sausage with grilled onions and peppers. Naturally I've included pictures of what both of them look like so you can get a feel for what to expect. I've never had a bad experience at Woofies and I've gone at least once a year since I was a small child. Ironically my step-father also used to live in the Chicago area so he found this little gem and I've been hooked ever since. If you are looking for a legit "Chicago Style" hotdog. Woofies is the best place to go in St. Louis. The former owner was very well known in St. Louis and you will tell by all the pictures of local favorites when you walk in. Yes, in St. Louis we really don't like the Cubs, Blackhawks or Chicago style pizza but, Woofies has broken the barrier and made Chicago style hotdogs acceptable. Prices are ok to portion size. Woofies is the closest thing you'll get to a Chicago dog in St. Louis. They're delicious and the fries are very Chicago as well - greasy and a little soggy - that's a good thing, trust me. FYI - they only accept cash - at least as of they last time I went there - so don't make the mistake of ordering sans cash. If you do, you'll be forced to deal with the fact that the smells from your delicious bag of food have permeated your car as soon as you pull up to the window, but you can't have your food b/c you didn't heed my warning and BRING CASH. So, as a result, your food is just sitting, sitting at Woofies waiting for you to pick it up, but you have to run to the nearest atm (that doesn't charge a fee - I think they offer atm service, but it charges) to get cash while your food just sits, lonely and cooling waiting for your return. Basically, if you're craving a Chicago dog or, if you've never had one and want to know what a real hot dog is supposed to taste like, go to Woofies. Just bring some cash with you. read more

Filthy! Not just a dive, but a filthy dive. How they hell do you run a restaurant that makes hot dogs and mess that up? I had a Chicago style dog, yes they had the fixins, but the hot dog was shriveled and tasteless, terrible. I was looking for a health dept rating but noticed there was none posted. I can imagine why. Before you order just take a look at the napkin dispensers and the door way. I wish I had before I ordered. If you do have a go at it, bring hand sanitizer and some lysol. If you are from Chicago and miss the dawgs do not be tempted. The order took a long time for what was ordered and no customers ahead of me, also they charge a fee for debit cards, round up the price and give you change back for the difference, very strange. I use to swear by this place, but the last 3 times we have had problems. Missing a meal completely for one coworker last time, no seasoning on the fries, polish sausage was hot dog in error and then today happened. 4 orders of fries that tasted like they have been waiting 2 days for us. Hard, stale and cold. What happened to the old days when you did not drop the fries until we arrived. NO ONE ate the fries. My polish was ordered with grilled onions and cheese. The one I got had that, but also had some peppers, some tomatoes, which I am allergic to, and some bright green chopped stuff. So no lunch for me today. 3 strikes, you're out. read more

Honestly, it wasn't spectacular. I mean, it was a good dog, don't get me wrong. I got a Nathan dog and there was no sauerkraut on it, and that was the main thing I was craving! I didn't say anything because the workers were not friendly. The guy in front of me asked about an order and the girl working low key yelled at him. The dog was tiny, shriveled, overcooked. Totally not worth standing in line, in that clustered, hot building. The other worker proceeded to make a phone call before taking my order. And honestly, I was still hungry after eating that hot dog. I expect to at least be full when spending $7 for a hot dog and a drink. I was not impressed!! I'm a big person on service. I hate to be one of the few party pooper reviews here, but my hubby and I ate here recently and thought the food was quite average. We are by no means hot dog connoisseurs, so perhaps we overlooked something in the preparation or flavor, but nothing about our meal was particularly noteworthy. I appreciated the variety and freshness of the toppings, but two hot dogs, 1 coke and 1 chili cheese fry set us back ~$15... and we were still hungry afterward to boot. You can get a decent hot dog, variety of toppings and a soda at QT for like 3 bucks, plus you don't have to wait nearly as long to get your food. The dogs are of course great. They are a bit pricey, but you have to pay for quality. I had the Big Herm and loaded chili fries and both were great. I thought it was weird to put a footlong hot dog on 2 regular sized buns. I'm not sure if this is the norm or not, but I didn't really care for it. Also the footlong container doesn't fit into their bags. I would think that you would have special buns and bags that fit the merchandise that you sell on a daily basis. The young girl who took my order wasn't exactly rude, but wasn't friendly either. My experience has always been that the staff is less than stellar, so I'm assuming that she learned from her mentors. Great dogs! It can be uncommonly difficult to find a decent dog in St. Louis but Woofies has been doing it right for longer than I can remember. Stop in when you get a chance and try the Chicago-style and the coney in particular. Their versions in both can complete with anything out of Chicago, Detroit, and NYC/NJ, in my honest opinion. As a hotdog lover my husband has been excited to try this place for a while. We went and I was excited to see gyros on the menu. We ordered food to go , it took about 15 minutes for a burger a hotdog and a gyro. The gyro was good but my son and husband wouldn't eat the burger. It had a softer texture and wasn't appealing , also the bottom bun was a soggy mess from too much mustard and onions ( the amount of onions was overkill and I'm an onion lover) overall it's a cute place with some decent food although somewhat pricey . Took a star away because they used to have some amazing cheese sauce that they used to prep in house but changed to a different more "standard" cheese sauce in a dispenser.....blah. I've been going Woofies for several years and I have always loved the food. I gave them one star because of the service. The last two times I've gone the service was bad. Today I went to Woofies and was the only person in there; they did have several people in the drive through. I was standing at the register ready to order for about two minutes. The lady behind the register didn't say anything to me and totally ignored me. I suppose I should have said I'm ready to order, however I didn't. Warning! This review may upset those with delicate digestive systems. I like many others, was listening to a KMOX live broadcast by Bobbie Costas. He challenged Football Cardinal Dan Dierdorff, a Hall of Famer, to get to Woofie's by the end of the broadcast for the hour and before the news at the Top of the hour was over, some 13 minutes. KMOX was on 4th and Market, and Woofie's 25 miles west in Overland at Brown Road and Woodson. It may have been backwards with Costas driving it has been so long ago I cannot remember. The point is Woofie's made the best dog sandwich, the duplicate of the famed Chicago Vienna Beef on poppy seed bun and nuclear green relish in the free world. The flavors were marvelous, and the service, "in your face" but done kindly and was part of the "free entertainment." A tiny place with a counter to eat at, and a couple of picnic tables under an outdoor awning, with pictures of "famous entertainers or sports people" autographed and on the wall. Those same pictures are still on the wall, the tiny restaurant has not been rehabbed, painted, new floors, ceilings, counters, chairs, equipment in the thirty years since the mad dash was made. I saw a pictures of the same KTVI "colorman" taken decades apart. He has aged and gained weight, as have we all. Shop worn, not real clean, service is still "in your face," but not as entertaining. While the bun is not the famed poppy seed, and the dog not as well dressed as it used to be the, it still has the heavy spice that it always has had. The sandwich is still the same messy and delicious taste it was for all of these years. The ownership has changed, the original has long since passed away, but the flavors are a tradition. It is not the glamorous chain shop, it isn't even glamorous, and I no longer live close by, but it won't be 30 years between visits. The dog's in many incarnations are the best in the city and full of flavor. I just wished they had put napkins in my "to go" bag. read more

I can never understand why people buy local institutions and then try to change them. If you want a hot dog stand that is your own, just buy one and put it elsewhere. Woofies is under new ownership, and the first order of business was apparently to take down the photos and signage that has made Woofies Woofies for so many years. If business was suffering, it was because of the higher prices, lower quality and changing hours that occurred when Paul took over. At least he respected the business he inherited though. It is still a decent hot dog, the staff is awesome and the fries are great, but the essence is gone from the place. As Bill McClellan once said in an article I read on Woofies wall over a million times... "You ever get the feeling things aren't as good as they used to be? I wanted a good hot dog and thought I would give Woofies a try. I have been here before but it was years ago and I could not remember if I was impressed. So when I walked in, the first thing my eyes looked at was the refrigerator in the back that was white and appeared to need a good cleaning from the outside. This was a little concerning for me but I went ahead and placed my order. Now the customer service to me has always been lacking, they never really seem to engage me as a customer and they would take my order in between having a conversation with another worker. So I placed my order and got my food. When I got home my mouth was really ready for some juiciness but instead I got a dry fire dog that was simply underwhelming. I don't even know why it was bad, but it just was. I felt like I could have just went to the store and made my own.
