This was interesting. I've driven past this place countless times and figured I should give it a try. I got here at 9:30 and after standing at the door for a minute it was then I realized I could seat myself. The place is smaller than I imagined and due to limited seating, the only open option was an unbussed booth. I managed to wipe away the crumbs as best I could and then someone came and cleaned the table.. After that, the server came over, introduced herself and said she'd be right with me. When she did, I ordered the #2 from the breakfast basics with a small orange juice. Up until that point, everything was going fairly well. All of a sudden, I see this rush of people coming and going. Some walked in and stood there hoping someone would get up while they happened to be waiting, while others put their face to the glass to try and see in. Mind you, the booth I chose, which was the only one open, is right by the window. So not only do I have people hovering over my food, but then I feel the stares of people outside the window. It was uncomfortable and speaking of which, this can also be said about the booth seats. The saving grace was my food coming but unfortunately, my eggs didn't have any cheese like I requested. I informed the server and they were able to put some on. The stares and dirty booth were enough to make me hightail it out of there. But alas, no trip to the diner is complete without it being cash only! Thankfully, they have an atm inside but be prepared to incur a $4.00 fee. The food itself was pretty good; the atmosphere? Experience was mostly typical of local, family-owned diners. Decent food and service (although they were packed and it took a while) but the really interesting thing about this place is that it is the location used by ahead East for the photo on the back of their 1975 album Flat as Pancake... This is a classic greasy spoon diner. Stools at the counter of 4 top booths. They will t dry to make it work for a group of 6 but come early if you're that big. Cash/check only, seat yourself, and some of the nicest waitresses with speedy service around. This was our second time in and we agreed that while it's good, it's almost TOO greasy. Pair that with a too hot griddle and you get some anemic looking pancakes (see photo). Sure they tasted fine but the look was meh and the gut rot feeling was strong from the heavy grease. Also not sure why the pat down the pancakes and chop the bottom while grilling. Ruins the fluff. Eggs and bacon were cooked well. My parter got chicken fried steak with thick slices of wheat bread and said it was fine. Overall hit the spot but not likely to continue to be a regular in our rotation. read more

Have had this on my list for awhile and was glad we finally made it. Old school genuine diner vibe, great food. We sat at the counter and really enjoyed the vibe. All of the employees work together, so multiple people checked in on us and made sure we were taken care of the entire time. The menu has quite a few options and both Hubby and I had trouble deciding. He went with the Hash & Holly with a side of biscuit and gravy. He loved them both. I opted for the chicken and waffles. I deducted two stars because the description of my meal was totally inaccurate. Eggs Benedict "poached eggs/homemade hollandaise sauce." That is a complete lie. The eggs were fried. The sauce was cheese. I guess it is my own fault for having ordered such a meal at a diner, but still. My husband liked his breakfast and used copious amounts of their own hot sauce which they sell exclusively from a vendor in Kansas. I bet their burgers are fantastic and this would be a great hangover or late night (after hitting the bar) meal. Olivette Diner is a classic hole-in-the-wall American diner. If you've never been to one, Olivette Diner is a great place to start. I always get the Slinger with the side of grits and butter, but they have a decent-sized menu with plenty of choices for everyone. My order is always perfect, and the staff there is very friendly. Pro tip: if possible sit at the counter. Everything is cooked to order and it is great fun to watch the skill and efficiency with which these folks cook up your food. Whenever I am here I do not even look at my phone for entertainment, I just watched the short-order cook do his thing. Prices here are very reasonable - definitely lower prices than some of the other diners here in town. This place is a staple in my sisters family and it is definitely a classic St Louis diner, despite it's location in a strip mall. You cannot go wrong with the breakfast staples here and the price is right. My one gripe is that it is nothing special. The food is nothing different than what you might get at a Cracker Barrel or Denny's but the atmosphere is way better. The staff is also attentive and quick to refill coffee and water without asking.
