Adorable bookshop in Truckee, CA. The staff was so helpful when I was looking for new reading glasses!

I will never not support an independent bookseller... this is a great little shop. They have a great inventory, and a cute separate room for the children's area. I didn't make it downstairs to the Rock Cellar. I will have to visit next time. The employees were a mixed bag. One person greeted me, they were very friendly and offered great suggestions to help me select my purchase (such as reading the first page of each to see what grabs me). Guy behind the counter was, hmmm somewhat lackluster and not engaging; mildly condescending even... but the woman (assuming gender here) who was working the floor made up for him. I will absolutely go back again.

Who doesn't love an independent bookstore??!! I know I do- service and selection were great. Loved the local book about rescue dogs, Ski Patrol Pups was so cute and perfect for my grandkids. So many cute gifts at reasonable prices . I was happy to support this local independent bookshop!

What a beautiful bookstore. Take a step inside and feel whisked away to yesteryear. Gorgeous historical architecture, brilliant metal ceiling, downstairs complete with gates that close like a dungeon. Bookshelves and tables filled with interesting titles, old and new. Children's section in the back. I could easily spend a few hours in there.

Fantastic spot! Very spacious but full of great books--they've got a nice diversity to the selection. I love the handwritten genre signs, made for easy browsing. The sliding ladder is a magical touch. I bought two books plus a travel game (cute selection of games/puzzles/cards/etc in addition to books). They also have a separate children's room which was awesome, and downstairs are more books plus vinyl. I just love the overall layout and design, including personalized touches such as staff recs and spotlight tables. One of the books I bought was a staff pick and their blurb really sold me. Plus, the location is super cute and there's lots of other fun shops/food/sightseeing to do.

Walked into this bookstore when I was exploring downtown Truckee. What a gem. I love independent little bookstores.

Could it be in a more beautiful location?

I couldn't love this place more. For such a small town, it has an expensive selection of books. They go the extra mile by including titles from women and people of color. They have all the Forrest/explorer/Truckee/Tahoe/local interest too. There's a huge kid and young adult section. And downstairs is a vinyl shop. They have new and used stuff. This place is everything. Everything everything.

Great book store in Truckee with an excellent selection of paperbacks and hard cover books. I found a great book on the Donner party there.

The park rangers are informative and helpful. I was able to stamp my travel book with the name of the park and image of a prairie wagon. Clean bathrooms. Everything we've wanted to learn about the Donner Party were explained to us by the park volunteer who gave us a free one-hour tour. Historical tours are offered at 11:00a and 1:00p. Thanks, Ron! Very informative! Included with the tour is a short walk to the Murphy Cabin. The inscription on the rock read "The face of this rock formed the north end and the fireplace of the Murphy Cabin." It also listed the names of the members of the Donner Party, those who perished and survived (see photo). Donner Pass is now fairly easily traversed, but the Donner Party were up against feet of heavy snow, and the wagons they were traveling in were no match for a modern four wheel drive. The terrain is famously rugged, so imagine passing over it with no road. Review #3556

My genre of choice is Romance and I did not see a dedicated Romance section. Luckily, "House of Cotton" was on my TBR, as I had bought and gifted it a few years ago. So I snagged it and paid. The two workers behind the cash wrap were friendly and took the time to make me feel like I was the only patron in the store, despite what was probably an onslaught for the day. Rad Cat also has a curated selection of stationary and journals to choose from if that's something you're also in the market for. They have a section for cats you can interact with, however with the amount of people that came through on this day, the cats were also overwhelmed and weren't able to be interacted with. Which is totally fine and made total sense for the day.

Five Dog Books is not very easy to locate. It's on a residential street in a converted house with a…read moresmall sign out front to declare the treasures inside. I mentioned this to the owner; he replied that he only wanted the serious book buyer to find him. I think he succeeds in this wish rather well. He also has the most messed up hours I've ever seen and he rarely keeps them, so it's nearly impossible to visit more then once. The shop isn't incredibly large, but every room is tastefully shelved and in proper order. I felt, though, that I was not allowed to simply shop. The owner insisted on reading excerpts from his favourites tomes. All I wanted to do was to shop for a few books, I did not want to entertain "open mic night"! While the selection was incredible, the owner was annoying and just wouldn't leave me alone. He only accepts cash and there is no wheelchair access. Both of which are not good for me.

Located in the old residential…read moresection of Holcomb Avenue (fairly close to the Citgo on South Virginia), Five Dog is located in a somewhat rundown house. The sign is no longer than, having been taken down. Manuel does indeed have the most inflexible hours that I have ever seen, the store is more by appointment than having any actual set hours and he is somewhat eccentric. His selection of Great Basin history/Native American history is absolutely excellent, as well as his selection of philosophy and literature. He does tend to go around quoting Jorge Luis Borges quite frequently, which makes it irritating to actually concentrate on browsing for books. He does not accept anything but cash or checks, which is also quite frustrating and will occasionally decide not to sell a certain book to someone after they have made a selection. Why are the books on display and priced if you do not want to sell them? Very irritating. If you venture to explore Five Dog Books, bring cash with you and have two or three hours to devote to talking to Manuel. Despite his limited hours, his knowledge of literature is incredibly diverse and voracious and his literary insights are fascinating. You will learn something when talking to him.
