I love an independent book store! I actually had come here a few years prior last time I was in the area and knew I would be coming back. This weekend I had the chance to come back and I'm so glad I did! The location is awesome. There's ample paid street parking and a ton of other stores and restaurants nearby. The front of the store is a large selection for adults and young adults, and then there's a nice kid section in the back. Employees are all awesome and very friendly AND will offer suggestions, which I love. I wish there was a bookstore like this one in my home town haha. What a cute and well kept store. Totally impressed and can't wait to go back. They had SO many options and keep their books current and up to date so you can easily find books popular in your Goodreads. The cashier was extremely friendly. She just had lovely customer service and was really in the know on the books I picked up. She even recommended one I might like that I threw in as well. Oh my gosh, this is seriously the coolest bookstore in the Reno-Tahoe area. Staff have been super friendly and knowledgeable. And I absolutely love, that I can pre-order (signed) books (from local authors) and I can pick them up, or have them shipped to me. While I have been mostly picking up signed books, over the last few months, I recently pre-ordered a book by a non- local. It was wrapped and shipped beautifully, and Word After Word Books has become my first choice for print book buying. If I can get the book here, I will absolutely do so. I will never not support an independent bookseller... this is a great little shop. They have a great inventory, and a cute separate room for the children's area. I didn't make it downstairs to the Rock Cellar. I will have to visit next time. The employees were a mixed bag. One person greeted me, they were very friendly and offered great suggestions to help me select my purchase (such as reading the first page of each to see what grabs me). Guy behind the counter was, hmmm somewhat lackluster and not engaging; mildly condescending even... but the woman (assuming gender here) who was working the floor made up for him. Fantastic spot! Very spacious but full of great books--they've got a nice diversity to the selection. I love the handwritten genre signs, made for easy browsing. The sliding ladder is a magical touch. I bought two books plus a travel game (cute selection of games/puzzles/cards/etc in addition to books). They also have a separate children's room which was awesome, and downstairs are more books plus vinyl. I just love the overall layout and design, including personalized touches such as staff recs and spotlight tables. One of the books I bought was a staff pick and their blurb really sold me. Plus, the location is super cute and there's lots of other fun shops/food/sightseeing to do. read more

This is a really nice little independent bookstore in the middle of the downtown Truckee strip. The front section has a lot of local interest books, including hiking guides, beautiful photography books, and history books. Our daughter has been learning about emigrants to California who came through Donner Pass on their way to Sutter's Fort, so I enjoyed flipping through a book about the history of Truckee, learning a lot more about this little town that we visit about once a year. The shelves are full of interesting books; I enjoy wandering around the small bookstore. The kids section is towards the back; in the past year they've set up tables with more books in place of some comfy armchairs, so the kids just sat on the floor and read (sorry to all the customers who were trying to walk by them). We came away with a few new books during the past visit. There's a little bench and staircase out front for restless kids and adults to take a break. Bonus points for the smell of fresh-made fudge wafting in from next door's candy shop. read more

Oh how I love a good book store, and Word After Word Books did not disappoint! Stopped in last weekend to shop for Christmas gifts and discovered a really nice curated selection of books and gifts. They had a really good safety protocol and I saw full compliance with the rules. For the size of the shop, have a surprising amount of great offerings. An amazing little bookstore with an unrivaled selection. I could have stayed here perusing the shelves for hours. I don't live in Truckee but I visit occasionally and a bookstore that puts this much thought into its selection is worth going out of the way for. Like so many, I wandered in for the first time while window shopping in downtown Truckee. They sell a Donner Party themed dinner game that I noticed right off the bat and couldn't help but buy. Beyond that the selection is just fantastic. They have a lot of new editions of classics and a big section related to wilderness, survival (the Donner Party in general being a notable favorite) and mountaineering. In other words, they know their local audience. read more

The historic district of Truckee has always appealed to me -- even though it shouts "tourist town." But, hey, DH and I come here as tourists. DH enjoys people watching or snapping a few pictures, while I like to browse in the shops. One of my favorite stores is Word After Word. I am always on the lookout for independent bookstores during our travels, and Word After Word is a wonderful place to browse -- and buy. While the store is small, it has a good selection. Equally important, the sales staff are welcoming, pleasant, and knowledgeable. Word After Word is not just for the tourist trade. They seem very community-minded with their business plan. Always love this store and always have to stop here every year. My girls and I are on a kick of reading and so I enjoy buying books, but even more in an actual bookstore. Back home in LA we hardly have any bookstores any more let along ones that sell new books other than something online. There's nothing like holding an actual book in your hand and getting to read the back cover. Workers are delightful and very helpful. The store is nestled in the downtown part of town in the awesome brick buildings. Such a fun treat to go and check out. And downstairs they have a bargain basement and an awesome record store.
