In my quest to find fun cardio dance classes, I found my way to Work It! Armed with a 7-day free trial, I signed up for 4 Zumba classes throughout the week to see if they fit with my schedule and if I liked the instructors and the studio. Here's what I found: --The Zumba instructors are great. I took classes with Margo and Tonya, and I really liked both of them. I signed up for a class with Petra, but they cancelled the class because they were having some event. I took a class with her at a different studio, though, and she is also great. Lots of energy and fun dance moves that make you forget that you're getting a workout. --The studio itself is wonderful. Located just a block from the Metro and a couple of bus stops, it is just upstairs from Lee's Flower Shop. The layout is perfect, although it is narrower at one end than the other. Tons of windows for light and fresh air, a nice waiting area and the nicest staff. They also have a water cooler so you can fill up your water bottle. The only thing I would add is a changing room. There are two bathrooms, but no space just for changing. --The price for a membership is probably the best deal in DC. About $40/month for an annual membership (and if you sign up by the end of May, they will waive the $40 enrollment fee) or about $50/month for a 6-month membership, and you can take unlimited classes. If you don't want the commitment, a 10-class pass is $130. But the membership is a total steal. I felt like I found the perfect place in DC, but there is one problem that I can't get over that is the only thing stopping me from becoming a member - the timing of their classes. On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, their first evening class (the one I want to take) starts at 6pm. That is usually the time I leave the office, but sometimes I have to leave later than that. I wish their classes started just 30 minutes later. It would make it easier to actually make it to class. In all, Work it! is a great place to get your groove on and get a workout if you can make it to class on time. It's a little gem on U Street. read more

I'm interning in DC for the summer and was looking for a fun way to get fit and stay healthy. I bought the Groupon with 10 classes for $29 and figured "why not"? I've taken six classes and now I wish the summer wouldn't end! I've tried WandaWoman dance (twice), tai chi, the weekend bootcamp, bollywood dance fitness, and pilates mat fusion. The WandaWoman dance class is my favorite, with its hip-hop dance party vibe. There is always a diverse crowd -- you can even find a fly 60+ year old (or three) giving the younger participants a run for their money! Overall I have really enjoyed my time at Work It! Studio. If I'm back in town next summer I will definitely buy another 10-class pass. read more

Work It is such an asset to the community. Everyone that works here, from the front desk, to Wanda, to the instructors, is warm, friendly and encouraging. Having a bad day? Come to Work It and work it out! There is a good variety of classes. The only room for improvement is offering a wider schedule for those of us with crazy work hours. read more

Best fitness classes in DC! When you join Work It you join a community. Everyone is enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and happy to be there. I'm not super fit and I needed a place to get started after being out of commission for a while. I'm so glad I chose Work It. They have classes ranging from gentle yoga to boot camps that will kick your butt. And the famous Wanda Woman Workout is spectacular and Wanda herself is a force of nature and an inspiration. Work It! Studio is AMAZING. Everyone there is super friendly, the vibe is not competitive at all and people are just there to have a great time. The WandaWoman classes are AMAZING.. you don't even feel like you're working out, just having a lot of fun, and they are perfect for people with a dance background/ just like to move. If you want something more fitness-y, Delvin and Sherri's conditioning classes will push your body like no other. This studio is a community in itself, and one of my favorite places on the U Street Corridor. I would absolutely recommend it to everyone! Work It has a great vibe. It is super welcoming and friendly, the owner and teachers go out of their way to make everyone feel comfortable and confident. I have really enjoyed about half of the classes I've taken here and not enjoyed the other half at all. However I think this has more to do with my personal preference for the classes themselves than anything else. The Piloxing and Zumba classes have been my personal favorites. The only thing that keeps me from giving Work It 5 stars and the only thing that has me unsure about whether I will continue to attend classes here is their limited schedule. If you have an even somewhat demanding schedule it can be very hard to find a class you can attend-- They should really consider adding more classes before 8 or after 7 during the week and more classes on Saturdays and Sundays. read more

I have been a member of this studio since November. As a newcomer to DC I was eager to find a down to earth home, which I thought I had found. The owner, Wanda, lacks empathy for her customers. The past two months a few items have changed. My favorite class and the only reason I continue my membership, piloxing with Jennifer, was moved from 9:45 to 9:30. I arrived at 9:45. The current newsletter states: "Please be on time. There is a 15 minute grace period before class starts. No one will be admitted after 15 minutes. NO EXCEPTIONS" I am not even sure what that means....the warm up? Either way I was 15 minutes late the first Saturday morning it was changed. She literally refused to let me in the class. Of course I did not back down I wanted my Saturday morning workout. Eventually she let me in. Recently the membership rose from $29.99 to $39.99. Although I jumped on the membership in order to get the better rate before the new year. I was ok with this changing understanding that rent on U st. could be increasing. The last straw that led me to this review. Wanda steps into class before it starts and states you must cancel within 24 hours of class instead of 2 hours, claiming an email went out. I triple check my spam and email. The last newsletter was sent August 26th as the September Newsletter. The email does not state this new rigorous policy. Its currently not in writing anywhere. The 2 hour policy already allows the studio to charge you $17 (one class fee). She claims last week 4 people cancelled at the last minute. 4! Wow!! She still was able to get an additional $68 from those cancellations. Instead of being happy with that she decides that her members should be charged more if they can't cancel within 24 hours! There are already rules in place for repetitive no shows and late cancellations. They will lose online privileges this should be enough to reverse the behavior. 24 hours doesn't allow for traffic, working late, inclement weather, family emergencies. The instructors are great! The members are a joy! But Wanda's ever changing policies are ridiculous. What are the real perks to being a member???? read more

I recently graduated from college and wanted a fun way to get healthy and lose weight so when I saw a groupon to a work out studio near the U Street metro station I hopped on it! Fast forward to after taking 6 classes...I LOVE IT! Although some of the classes are a little packed (I mean because they are so good), I am in the process of dancing my way to good health. I particularly love the WandaWomen Dance and the Tai Chi class. My goal is to sample all of the classes before I use up all my classes on the groupon. Bottom line, after I use up all my groupon classes I am becoming a member. read more

I have been a member of this studio since October and was happy up until recently. I had signed up for their healthy heart membership and was getting monthly deductions, up until last month towards the end of the month. This month they charged me double towards the beginning of the month. When I attempted to find out what was wrong from the owner, I was presented with resistance and disrespect. She didn't take the time to listen to my concerns and told me pretty much "oh well". When I asked to cancel my membership she told me I couldn't cancel and it was in the contract I never received. I would have understood and accepted if Wonda was less hostile and explained herself oppose to making excuses and attempting to blame me for deductions not being made, when it was automatically deducted. I bought a pass for 20 classes from Groupon and it was well worth it! I absolutely plan to continue here after my pass runs out. The Piloxing class is incredible. It was high intensity, I felt like I was getting a good work out, bit I wasn't miserable the whole time. Most importantly, I think Jennifer is one of those truly great fitness instructors that are really hard to find. Her energy was great! In the beginning of class, she introduced herself to all the new people and asked if anyone had any injuries she should know about. She informed each person of the modifications they should use for certain exercises to make sure they don't hurt themselves. I am plus sized and newly returning to exercise, and I didn't feel discouraged in this class at all. When I couldn't keep up, Jennifer was there telling me how great I was doing. I really felt supported and empowered in this class. WandaWoman workout was great as well. This class had people of all ages, shapes, and fitness levels. It was fast paced but not too intense. Definitely a fun, moderate intensity workout. And you don't have to be a good dancer to participate and have fun. I was not impressed by the Muscle Up! class. I wanted a strength focused class and since the ultimate conditioning class specifically states that it's best for those more advanced, I figured this would be the class for me. I didn't feel encouraged or supported by Lauren. Different approach, I guess- more drill Sargent and less kind and encouraging instructor. My major concern with this class is that, had I not known that it was ok to ask for modifications (or had I been too embarrassed to ask...) I could have seriously injured myself in this class. I would not encourage anyone who is new to working out or who feels down on themselves when they can't keep up with the class to attend this one. Very excited to attend more classes here! This is simply an amazing place to work-out! Being a member is truly rewarding and transformational. I don't think, scratch that, I KNOW I would not be where I am in my weight loss and fitness goals if it weren't for Wanda and the other instructors. I have lost over 50 lbs since I first joined Workit! Studios summer 2013, and look forward to losing the rest with the strong foundation I built with Wanda and the rest of the divas at Workit! This place is a gem! For my sister's bachelorette party, we were able to organize a private zumba class that fit our style and timing. Wanda and Denise are great to work with and the instructor, Margo, was incredible. I'd highly recommend it for anyone looking for a great workout, but even more so for a private party. I am updating my review because the management has done a good job at remedying my computer issues and they have also sold out all their Groupon special, which I think will reduce the crowding quite a bit. They also know my name, which is unusual in DC and very nice. I love Tonya and Marcela's classes in particular; I recommend trying them out. I plan on buying multi-class cards in the future, so they have achieved getting me as a repeat customer! read more

The studio has been under renovations for over two months requiring members to go to alternate locations for class for 4 weeks. Now the location will be closed for two weeks for renovations and they aren't offering classes at alternate locations but they are still charging monthly membership fees. I have contacted the BBB regarding this because I believe it's illegal. Update- After this review I received an email from the owner of the business within three days. She informed me that my monthly fee will be prorated for the time that business wasn't open. read more

With three classes under my belt, I am no expert on the studio. It is clear, though that these folks love to dance and stay fit, and that spirit is contagious. I am not young or in great shape and do not feel any judgement either from the instructors or from classmates. That the two bathrooms (which are clean and nice) form the locker room and that there is no shower presents a serious drawback if you don't live right around there or plan to go out after. That's the only reason to take stars away from this great studio. read more

This is a dancing studio I go to whenever I need an uplifting experience or if I'm too stressed at work. Everyone here thrives to make you feel better, it's like a big family. My personal favorite class is Wanda's, she's an extraordinary woman who inspires me with her attitude and dancing freestyle. I would recommend her Wednesday class for beginners, as the Monday class assumes you've been coming for a while and learned some of the moves. I also like the Zumba classes with Margo, another wonderful personality! read more

Work it! Studio is one of my favorite places in DC! I have taken almost every class they offer, and they are all fun, challenging, and a great work out. The owner, Wanda, is so welcoming, and her WandaWoman classes are AMAZING! The studio provides a truly positive environment to work out/dance. I will vouch for the zumba classes, tai chi, ballet, and belly dancing also--they are all fun and it's been a great experience getting to try out some brand new classes. My partner and I took lessons to help us prepare a first dance for our wedding. We came in with very low expectations for ourselves, but Denise and Wanda were amazing and very patient, fun, and supportive. In just four lessons we were able to put together a dance that we felt great about and surprised/impressed our family and friends. Work It Studio is by far, hands down the best work out regimen that I've ever experienced. They offer great classes and whenever I am there all of my stress is left outside the door. I've been a member of Bally's and Washington Sports Club over the years and there is no comparison as far as my personal results. Most of my work out experiences are grueling and I've always had to drag myself to the gym but not at Work it! I look forward to all of my classes. The fact that I can dance off pounds is awesome !! OMG Wanda's Monday and Wednesday night classes are crazy fun and the best work out ever.
