    Beautiful stage

What an AMAZING place/venue!!!! This place offers the coolest ambience for private events, shows, concerts, etc. I also want to just give a MAJOR shoutout to several people I've come in contact with. One being Josh, the manager and owner, and Johnny the other owner. Josh and Johnny have been nothing less than incredible to work with, and I truly feel I can heavily trust them to make sure we have the best time. They also make sure your events are brilliantly put together. Their communication and professionalism says a ton about how incredible they are for the management of this business. The bartenders are GREAT! They offer several mixed beverages and also are super kind and friendly. They all have made me feel very welcome and I can't wait to go back. Leah, Joey, and Matthew were PHENOMENAL bartenders!!!! They were all incredibly personable, friendly, and professional. Ashley works in the box office, and she was also super sweet. She was a busy bee and seemed to handle everything with charm and classiness. Very professional, very kind. I thoroughly enjoyed talking with her. Josh is a the sound-check fella, and he was also super sweet and friendly and made our event pleasurable and easy. The process can be so stressful, yet so rewarding and he was an asset to the team. I truly can't express my gratitude towards all of the incredible workers here. They made the experience 10/10, and location and ambience is just as brilliant! I also want to add-- I'm very impressed with the level of security this place has. I always feel safe with the amount of security. They are always on the move and making sure everything is secure. Edit to add-- there is not food served at the venue BUT they often have food trucks outside. Today was Corn King.

Great venue for concerts! I've attended a few here and have enjoyed each experience! There really isn't a bad seat in the house. I prefer sitting upstairs so I can see the entire stage without feeling too crowded. Tip: Get to the venue early to pick your seat!

This is a great place to meet for an evening of fun and laughter. The setup is great for small events. The Yelp event was awesome with great vendors and our Yelp manager did a phenomenal job of orchestrating everything. This is a place that I will come back to.

Workplay is such a cool event venue! The space has several different areas to mix and mingle, with my fav being a side room that has a wall covered with posters from previous concerts. They also have a bar that serves some pretty tasty cocktails. If you're there for a show, it'd be hard to find a bad seat as that particular event space gets a good view of the stage from every angle. I'm definitely looking forward to checking out more events here.

Last night was my first time at WorkPlay, but it will not be my last. I went to see PJ Morton and he put on an amazing show! Finding parking was relatively easy. I bought tickets online and chose to pick the tickets up from Will Call. My name was on the list and I received my wristband to enter. The room we were in did not have any chairs so we stood for the entirety of the concert. WorkPlay had sent out an email to advise of the standing room only so I made sure to wear comfortable shoes. The acoustics in the room where PJ's concert was last night were awesome! The sound was so clear. The lighting was dope too! I would definitely come back her for another performance.

This place is pretty cool. I've been here a few times for concerts, fashions shows, and once to shoot a country music video actually. You never know what they have going on here. I've also heard of them hosting high school proms here. They have a parking lot across the street, but seeing as how it is still downtown Birmingham, it gets full pretty quickly on event days so you are left with street/parallel parking...if you are lucky. They have a bar that seems to be open to patrons all the time. Seems like people will just come here to drink after work. Their drinks are pretty hit and miss, so I probably won't come here to just hang out but more so if there is a real event or concert I want to go to here. Their actual concert stage is two tiered with some chairs, tables, and booths. Some of which get moved out of the way depending on who the performer is. I don't dance so I'm happy with a booth in the back!

First time here to see a friend play on open stage night - first Wednesday of the month I am told. Easy to find. On the border of the gentrified part of town and dystopia. No problem parking. Nice building and stage area at the bar. Good crowd but older, reasonably priced drinks, great bartender (Katie - sorry if misspelled). We just missed happy hour. Don't come hungry, folks, as they do not serve food here. This is not iron city. It's better.

The Nick is definitely not for everyone -- but it's absolutely an experience you'll never forget…read more After my friend (who was hosting us) passed out, my other friend and I decided to see more of Birmingham's nightlife. A friendly bartender at Up-Down Arcade Bar (another must-visit!) told us about this place, mentioning it's one of the few bars open 24 hours on the weekend. Naturally, curiosity won. From the jump, this place had character. There's a bouncer at the door, a makeshift elevated DJ booth to the right where you have to pay cash for a "membership." Don't worry -- there's an ATM conveniently behind the booth, ready to charge you a nice little convenience fee if you didn't bring cash. The membership lasts a year, but still, that was a first for me. Inside? Small. Crowded. Lively. And at 1 AM, there was a guy passed out in a chair right by the entrance -- with his dog roaming freely around the bar. I honestly couldn't make this up if I tried. The bartenders were solid -- fast, cool, and trying their best to keep up with the rush. There's a selection of local beers (pretty good ones too) and two pool tables... well, technically one, since they only had one cue ball. The pool sticks? Ancient relics. The bathroom? I'll spare you the visuals. Outside was much more breathable. There was a local guy named Walter -- from Georgia, of all places -- selling BBQ. Cool dude. The turkey wing was a little tough, but his attitude made up for it. Now, the real highlights? The people and the atmosphere. You've got folks eavesdropping on your conversations, tossing around racially backed jokes at me (that I politely corrected), a row of chain-smokers out front, and a woman openly asking for cigarettes or change that may have been homeless, but was definitely a crackhead and she so eloquently vocalized. It's a gritty and downright raw type of place, but somehow, it works. There wasn't any live music when we came, but I'm sure that's what makes this place shine more than it already does in its own unique way. I'll definitely be back for a performance night. Bottom line: Five stars because The Nick is exactly what it's supposed to be -- an unfiltered slice of Birmingham nightlife that refuses to apologize for being itself.

Here's why I say all of those glowing things: This room is tall, but small in square feet. There are bookshelves that align the walls. They are covered in books that face backwards, so the pages soak in the sound. It's a noise canceling solution that was just too dang obvious for anyone else to figure out. At times, the ticket prices might be steep, but it's worth it. It means you get to see one of your favorite acts in an intimate venue with people that care. Think about it... you won't have to deal with the drunk dude at the bar talking about who knows what, while your trying to enjoy a show. so good.

Yes we have plenty of places to see rock shows and indie shows but a true listening room where music is front and center and not the whole "hey look at me I'm at this show and you're not" thing we just don't have. I'm rambling because it's hard to convey the excitement I have for this place. It's the type of room that you can go to and the artist doesn't even have to be mic'd up for it to sound amazing. From what I understand a bar area is coming and there are more renovations to be done in the space but really the aesthetics don't matter when it comes to this place. It simply is a place to go and listen to music without distraction. Get there as soon as you can.

Made the decision to turn in and try Sanctuary; how fortuitous! First, this isn't just a music venue! I overheard many professionals around me, too, so it's definitely a place to run elbows with University types. Finally, I love music. This place has different musicians all the time. We've eaten here before and have been wanting to make it back, but between their popularity and our schedules, it's felt like trying to line up a dentist appointment during tax season. Tonight, though, everything finally clicked. We got there early and were greeted by two cheerful hostesses who promptly sat us in the corner... felt a little like we were back in kindergarten for talking too much, but we made it work. Oh--and if you're into live music during dinner, this place delivers. There's something about enjoying a good meal with live music in the background that just elevates the whole experience. It's also the kind of setting where local artists get their start, and you never know--you might be listening to someone on their way up. Once our waiter came over, we held off ordering while waiting on our "fashionably late" friends--who, for the record, treat arrival times more like loose suggestions. Eventually, the crew assembled and it was game on. I kept it simple to start: water, no lemon. Let's not contaminate perfectly good H2O--I want it 100 proof. For appetizers, we ordered the Fried Cauliflower and Fried Okra to share. And by "share," I mean I ordered them and then immediately abandoned that concept. Only child tendencies die hard. Both dishes were excellent. The fried okra, paired with their Creole ranch, absolutely stole the show--seriously, that sauce deserves its own fan club. The cauliflower was also very good, and the homemade remoulade held its own... just not quite on the Creole ranch level. Our friends ordered the Street Corn Dip, and while I didn't personally get any (again... sharing isn't my spiritual gift), I can confirm it was outstanding based on the fact that the dish came back cleaner than a whistle. One of the coolest parts of this place is the atmosphere. The building still carries that old church feel--you can almost picture folks sitting in pews listening to a sermon. These days, though, the only preaching happening is coming from the kitchen, and there's a "sinful" bar running along one wall that probably wouldn't have made the original blueprints. For the main course, my wife went with the Lobster Mac and Cheese, and I ordered the Chili Lime Shrimp. The mac and cheese was a solid choice--rich and flavorful--but just a touch on the dry side. A little more cream would take it to the next level... perfect, but not Jesus-walking-on-water perfect. The shrimp, on the other hand, was good but didn't quite live up to expectations. It started strong but didn't finish the game, and I ended up handing off the last few bites like a reliever coming out of the bullpen. All in all, The Sanctuary on 25th is a great addition to the Tuscaloosa food scene. Between the unique setting, strong appetizers, live music, and overall experience, it's definitely worth a visit. Just be prepared--it stays busy, and if you plan on sharing food, make sure you're sitting with better people than I am.

The chairs sucked to add to it. I find the bathroom, whoever thought it was such a good idea to put a faucet that high was special because you have to turn the water low enough or push the faucet to the side to prevent from it splashing all over you. My in-laws got there a few mins before us and got everyone waters which that was good. The waitress, it took her forever to come back by to ask for drinks or starters. Granted we were waiting for a few other people but my husband wanted a soda and we were going to go ahead and get an appetizer. I decide to stick with my water because I just felt like I would get a drink if I asked for something different. Which I was right. My husband had to wave the waitress down for his soda. She accidentally brought him diet. She never brought back his drink. I had to get up and ask the hostess about our his drink and that we were wanting to order an appetizer. The hostess apologized and said they were really busy. I know I had to fix my face because I looked around, saw our table, and two other tables, about 6 people at the bar that the bartender handled, and looked back at the hostess like, "wtf?" The rest of our group shows up. Waitress comes back. Still no drink for my husband and gets our appetizer orders along with the remaining drink orders. When the appetizers comes out, it was a guy who brought it to us and we asked him about the soda and he apologizes and gets it for us...finally. Nothing special about the appetizer just chips and dip. We finish it and once again...the waiting game. The rest of our group still had yet to get their drinks. She comes back after another long wait, drink less, and gets our orders. My father in-law mentions the drinks, she apologies, and gets them. The wait it took for our food to come was ridiculous. I hate to imagine how long we would have had to wait if it was actually busy. Maybe it might have been worth my wild if the food was phenomenal but the moment it was sat in front...I knew it was not gonna be good. I got the Alfredo with shrimp. It looked like some soup. The sauce to noodle ratio was not good. The sauce was so runny that I had to lean it and eat the noodle like Naruto eating ramen. 5 measly pieces of shrimp. The sauce was also very gritty. How something that is so runny also be gritty, I don't know but I've had lean cuisine frozen alfredo dinners better than this $29 plate. 3 of us ordered Alfredo, only one got a piece of bread but I'm not asking for bread because I don't want to wait 30 mins to get it. My son looked at me and legit said, "we should have just gone to Olive Garden" knowing good and well I don't care for Olive Garden but also knowing it would have been better than whatever this plate in front of me was called. When walking to my car, I looked at everyone and said, "I'm sorry but this place sucked. I've been curious about it and now that I've experienced it...there is nothing here that would bring me back." So I suggest spend your money elsewhere because there is nothing that makes this place standout enough to have the audacity to have nonexistent service and charge $29 for soupy Alfredo
