Cost Plus World Market, or World Market as I like to shorten it, is a fun store that stocks imported goods. This is the place I go to when I want to try out some unique candies or cookies from around the world. This is the place my dad goes when he wants to try new wines or beers from around the world. To each their own, right? I usually don't make trips to World Market for a few reasons. First, it's a bit of a drive. Second, the stuff can be a bit pricey, but at least you'll get to try new things. This place is somewhat of a treat in my book. Today, I ended up going here with one of my girl friends before lunch. She had never gone here before, so it was a new experience for her to see all the different goods they have in stock. She's a coffee-lover, but she said she wasn't too impressed with the coffee selection. I don't drink coffee, but the area seemed expansive enough. They had a lot of different and unique flavors. They had a 50% sale on all their Christmas goods, including sweets, and it was killing me that I knew I should only choose a few. I managed to get a few different goodies, including an Italian 'crunchy almond nougat' (I had one -- not very good), some biscuit cookies for 99 cents, a white chocolate candy Christmas candy bar, a bag of iced gingerbread cookies, and a bag of Christmas Cookie Crunch candies -- all for $9.45 due to the sale. This review is solely for the food items. I don't even look at the furniture, cookware, or any other stuff. This place is like the United Nations of Foods. Okay, that's definitely a hyperbolic statement. But if you want to find a fine selection of foods from all over the world, this is a good place to start. Where else can you buy Mestemacher fitness and sunflower seed bread, Milka and Ritter chocolate bars (and not just a couple Ritter varieties, like you find at Trader Joe's, but a reasonably broad and ever-changing sampling), double Devon cream to put on your Sticky Fingers scones, a can of spotted dick from the UK, and most important of all, Vegemite? They have a respectable variety of wines at reasonable prices; on occasion you'll find a surprisingly good deal on a French or Italian bottle. Make sure you pay a visit during the winter holiday season. That's when they carry the Super Dooper Pocket Pooper, a reindeer key chain that dispenses little candy balls. Tis the season...yes, the season for being super behind on buying prezzies! I pass Cost Plus World Market on maybe even more than a bi-weekly basis when I am in California. It is very conveniently located. However, I enter about once a year. Food: You want high-end chocolates, interesting chips, and various international items, you'll find them! Cost Plus also has its own store brand for certain items. Prices are decently high, but the sales make the prices more reasonable! Obviously, the selection for food is not as expansive as a grocery store, but they offer the unique items where you think "oh cool, I haven't seen this before!" (Well, unless you're me who prides myself on knowing every brand and unique product in the grocery store LOL.) House items: There is also a mishmash of house items like kitchenware and whatnot. They also adapt to the seasons...Halloween items and holidays. Then again, what retailer doesn't these days! Parking: Usually parking is okay, but it can be a bit crazy during high times. When I lived in Missouri and Vegas, I used to really love stores like Cost Plus World Market. Now, I still love them but, not as much because there are so many other actual authentic options to choose from. Last time I was there, I almost bought Greek Olives but then I was like... why buy them here when I can go to a Greek Market and just get real ones? Does this make sense? The smell around the place is like scented candles and soap mixed with wooden furniture. The coffee and candy aisle would have to be my favorite. I like looking at the different chocolates from around the world. There are different kinds of beers too which I like. There is a lady who knows her coffee as well. World market serves a great amount of coffee and coffee grinders for people to use. The service is friendly and always want to help. They carry imported wine from different regions of the world. I haven't been in Cost Plus for more than a year...... what a difference. So many new delightful items, good prices (still in the range of buying something I don't need and won't break the bank). A bit of Anthropology with better prices, Some of the clothing was actually wearable and didn't look like the cheap stuff from years ago. Sales people, Corine and Marine were fabulous - understood what I would buy and didn't just try to push items on me. Towels from Portugal were a very good buy $$$ and design.... personal items seemed too be of higher quality or else your better packaging got me.... Disappointments - the basket collection was definitely reduced to maybe a 1/3 of what it once was - Cost Plus always had the best variety and size of baskets... need to restock in sizes and designs. There was a good selection of rugs - but hardly anything In 4x6 - most were 3x5 or 5x8........ but I could return the one I bought because is it is too small. Another old standby that you sadly gave up are the globe paper shades....one way to fudge a new shade on a mid-century Noguchi lamp Kitchen items were plentiful and even some brand names. My low review is because of the rudest interaction I have ever had with an employee. I have only left reviews like 5 times ever but I felt compelled to write something so that perhaps their management will see this. First, let me say that I have worked in restaurants my whole life. I have to work thanksgiving, Christmas Eve etc., So I understand how stressful work can be around the holidays. However, this employee was insanely rude For no reason, I only asked a basic question. The store was super busy before Christmas, I asked an employee to point me towards picture frames. She shrugged and rolled her eyes like she did not understand my question. I repeated, "picture frames". She again, looked at me like I was crazy to ask if they sold picture frames (by the way, they do sell picture frames). I was stunned at this women's reaction. If she didn't know, just say so. That's fine. But she acted like I was B for even asking her a question. Another employee over heard this interaction and attempted to step in. She told me where to find them but I was insulted that I abandoned my cart (I was going to spend a lot) and left. Also I did not want to wait in their insane line. I've never been to this store before, and I won't be going back. I received a small purse as a gift from this place that still had all the tags on it, including the SKU and barcode. I had no use for it, so I went to the store to return or exchange it. They wouldn't accept it, even though their system was able to easily scan the item, because they said they required the receipt or member number (usually telephone). As I don't want the giver to know I'm returning it, I'm obviously not going to ask them what their member number is. I would advise you to avoid purchasing anything from these stores, especially as a gift. It's a shame, too, because they looked like they had some interesting things. read more

They have lots of German foods that are much cheaper than buying from a specialty store (great Haribo and chocolate selection and around Christmas they have delicious gingerbread and marzipan treats). They also have various beers, wine and teas. So even though the store is probably more known for furniture and decor I always come here for kitchen essentials and sweets. I generally enjoy Cost Plus and the items it sells. Sometimes I even come in just to enjoy browsing. Recently, I moved and when someone moved my Campaign desk, they broke the leg. I was already pretty stressed about the move and having to find someone to fix it or having to buy a new desk entirely wasn't something I was looking forward to. I commented on the Facebook page and someone told me to try going into my local store to ask if they have the part. I went in, asked, and the woman in charge of furniture looked at my photo of the broken leg, figured out which side I needed, went back, and quickly came back with the leg. She also went back and got the instruction booklet on how to build the desk, once I asked if the instructions were online. I was shocked when she told me there was no charge! This employee was super helpful, and I'm so glad Cost Plus provides customers with furniture parts for replacement. It honestly made my day! read more

First time at this World Market and great first impression. Found a bunch of Spanish products, like real bomba rice, at an affordable price (considering it is normally an expensive product, even in Spain). Also you can find chorizos, salamis, cheese and wine from Spain and other countries (I was mostly focused in finding items from my home country for a picnic). How to replicate the Hong Kong British "Hong Kong Milk Tea" in the afternoon experience at work without having to spend $2.50 or more going to a Hong Kong cafe restaurant locally for mediocrity: 1) Head to your nearest Cost Plus World Market 2) Look for the tea section 3) Get a box of PG Tips brand (Britain's #1 selling commercial tea bags). For something that's a notch closer to better flavor, get the PG Tips Special Blend Tea. Although it is not leaves from Sri Lanka, but Ceylon and Kenya, it gives a decent aroma, texture, and flavor 4) Get a can of Carnation Evaporated Milk (Nestle) at your Asian supermarket in advance. $0.99 to $1.20 depending on geography and pricing. Experiment with another brand if you will. Use whole evaporated milk if possible. If you have true or pseudo Hong Kong Cheapne$$, uhmm....then try 3 packets of those coffee half n' half's at work. Not the same but an ok substitute. 5) Make sure you have the above items before proceeding. 6) Wait until about 3:15 pm. Or as the HK locals say "sahm deem sahm". AKA It's MILK TEA TIME B**CHES! 7) Take a bag of PG Tips. Put it in a ceramic cup. Add hot water 8) Let it sit n' brew for a bit. 9) Dunk in your desired amount of evaporated milk or Carnation. Stirred, not shaken (it's not a James Bond Vodka Martini). 10) Add sugar if necessary. If you wanna go hardcore, skip the sugar. It's healthier. This is called "Cha Tsow" in Cantonese, with "Tsow" meaning running. Tea doesn't run. What runs is sugar, meaning running away. It's street slang for those preferring their milk tea bold, brown, and beautiful. 11) Optional: SLACK, SLOTH, and take a moment to.... enjoy the moment. Do it a alone, or do it with a friend or more. Or be a true HK local and become a "snake king". For some reason in Cantonese slang, being a "snake king" means engaging in the ancient art of loafing, slacking. The craft of doing jack shit. Other than the dirty shopping baskets (some of them literally had dirt in them), I had an enjoyable experience shopping at this location. After pulling apart about half a dozen baskets, I found one that was relatively clean. I got here around 11AM today, and there was plenty of parking available. The parking lot is a decent size. The store was organized, and the displays were attractive. There was a condiment sale going on, in which the ketchup, mustard, mayo, BBQ sauces, rubs, and hot sauces were all discounted and also had a "buy two, get a third one free" promo going on thru Sept 1st. As I wandered around, I was greeted by three employees, and they all asked me if they could help me find anything. I ended up getting three bottles of Sontava Habanero hot sauce, a jar of Elki Artichoke Bruschetta spread & dip, and two greeting cards (one by Portal and the other by Papyrus) for $20.98 after my 10% off coupon was applied. I was emailed the coupon by World Market Explorer Rewards. My cashier was friendly, there was only one shopper ahead of me in line, and no one behind me. In the original review (visible below), I cited this shop as a locally important source of unusual imported cooking ingredients, whose inventory swells in certain seasons. As of late October 2013 there's a lot of this, from good-value temporary pastas and salamis to French potato chips flavored with goat cheese. "Gourmet Specialist" John M. at this location has been very helpful both in finding things (related merchandise sometimes is scattered in multiple displays around the shop) and in advising about seasonality, sales, etc. For "Oktoberfest" in Sept. and early Oct., Cost Plus "World Market" had special German offerings including beers, Spätzles, condiments, snacks including the convenient oversized Huober pretzels (individually wrapped, in boxes) and notably, the famous Meica brand (popular in Germany) of smoked sausages packed in jars. A TV food channel documentary on German sausage making took a tour of the Meica firm, its sausage fillings being mixed, packed, slowly smoked, loaded into distinctive tall jars with brine, steam-sterilized, and labeled. Herr Werke Direktor himself deftly pulled a finished sausage from a jar and tasted it thoughtfully, for quality control. read more

I just bought a few of my bathroom necessities and two sets of towels here which came out to $100 and it's not bad at all. I have been wanting to redo my bathroom decor and this place is my one stop shop here for the entire house and then some! I am going to miss shopping here during my lunch break since my work will be moving to Redwood Shores in November. They have such great deals here especially since they also email you a discounted coupon if you sign up at the cash register. All you need to give them is your name, zip code and email address. I noticed there is an abundance of fruit flies in the store. I know, right?! It has to be from the food in the back. It's quite annoying, though. Well, I'm definitely coming back for more stuff. This place has a little bit of everything!! I can't believe I've never been in this store when I've lived in Mountain View for years. I happened to stop by before lunching at the new pizza place next door. There are old school games, soda, candy, a little bit of Pier-1-Imports-like paraphernalia, snacks from all over the world, and worldly booze. I purchased some British Digestives, lemon cookies, pinwheels (random), and enjoyed looking at all the old school candies. Old school Mike N Ikes, old school taffy, old school tootsie rolls... It's very interesting to see the nostalgia-inducing packaging. I mentioned Pier 1 Imports because that was the feel I got from all the furniture, woven baskets, candles... and the home decorating items. There's stuff for crafts and a lot of potential gift-appropriate buys. Some of the Asian goods are really overpriced. With Mitsuwa, Nijiya, 99 Ranch etc. just a couple miles around this area, it's really hard to justify buying the ramune and Japanese candies anywhere besides a legit Asian market. So don't buy that stuff here. Go to Nijiya down the road. They have a free rewards program that you can sign up for - very similar to a Safeway card without an actual card... just use your phone number. I'll be back for sure! read more

I'd give this place 7 stars if I could. I reserved a TV stand over the phone when I realized that it was sold out online. Arrived at the store to pick it up a day later only to realize my car doesn't have fold down seats to transport the 62 inch whopper of a stand. Brian, the store manager was way beyond helpful. He stepped outside to my car, measured the length of the diagonal space I managed to create in the car by adjusting the front seats. He then measured the box and finally when it would not fit, he took all the pieces out for me to place separately in the car. He saved me a $75 delivery charge and did all this with a great attitude and a smile. This is my best World Market and furniture buying experience, bar none. Kudos! read more

i walked in here for the 1st time the other day and was like "wow" this place is like bed bath & beyond, whole foods, and a furniture store all wrapped into one! selection is decent, not as good as going to individual supermarkets and housewares stores, but enough to make me come back. staff is friendly and helpful, even without being asked. i'll be browsing around, and a staff member will come up and ask if i need anything. i went last week to browse, and they had these cute easter themed pasta on sale for $.99! it was enough to feed 3, with lots leftover. they had many other easter-themed edibles and decorations, all on sale for the week. i would probably not come here for general groceries, as their regular prices are on the higher side for weekly groceries, but i would stop in just to checkout the special occasion/holiday items they carry. read more

If you're a fan of HomeGoods type of stores, Cost Plus World Market is THE SPOT to be. I easily spent 2 hours inside the store poring over every single item. It's a wonderful place to purchase your souvenirs if you are visiting from out of town. World Market is also for those who are culturally inclined. I found a few pieces that were from Africa and India. Definitely some other exotic pieces too, but I don't remember all the countries now that this is about two weeks post-visit. Too bad I don't live in the area (well, good for my wallet), because I'd buy just about everything. They have some sort of membership program that is very easy to sign up - all they needed was an e-mail address. The woman at the register easily sold me on that one. I ran into a few store employees and they were so incredibly nice, offering help before I even asked for it. I'd like to rate Cost Plus higher, but over the years I have had some problems with some of their products. If you come here for only particular needs, then you'll do just fine. Avoid their furniture. It breaks and it's not very sturdy. It's essentially IKEA quality, but you could probably get a better deal at IKEA. Never buy any of this furniture unless it's on clearance, but again, the quality is so bad you should probably avoid it. I did buy a japanese style coffee table that was incredibly sturdy from here once, so not every single piece of furniture is so bad. Just be weary and don't ever blindly buy it! Also, don't be fooled by their wine selection. There are certainly some gems here, but nothing really amazing. And their prices aren't really that great. The only time the prices are reasonable, is when you buy enough bottles to qualify for the discount, but that's even if you can find that much wine you like and you are in the mood to buy that much. They do carry a few beers that are worth trying, at prices that are reasonable. The Delirium Nocternum is tasty! (If beer and wine is your fancy, you should really be going to BevMo, K&L, Vintage Wine Merchants or Beltramo's, depending on where you live!) There are a ton of other things that are great buys though, that keep me coming back. They have a nice balanced selection of foreign foods, including some very ethnic ones. If you're a die hard fan of a particular ethnic food, it'll leave you a little down, and a specialty store is something you should stick to. But for someone like me who just wants to try a thing or two, this is a nice way to get exposed to some foods that come direct from another country. It's neat to find things that are actually popular in those countries, and it will help keep your nostalgia running high if you have ever been there and enjoyed a product while you were there. They've also got a nice selection of candles and incense that smell nice. And if you're looking for some cheap flatware or plates, this might be a good place for you to go. They don't offer the kitchen supply variety as Crate & Barrel, but you also won't need to pay a fortune to get your kitchen started. I prefer the quality of a higher end home & kitchen store, but for things you need in a jiffy, this place serves it's purpose. If I was younger, I'd probably rate this 4 or 5 stars because of all the little deals you might find here. But as I've come into adulthood my tastes have started to prefer quality over quantity! I'd rather buy one thing once at a higher price, than need to continually replace cheap products. So keep that in mind when you consider visiting Cost Plus. It might be just right for you! read more

Really cool place for some home furnishings and some food treats you might not normally find in the regular grocery stores. I love to come here to find little gifts, and packaging for them in the way of gift bags, as well as greeting cards for many occasions. Not a bad selection of wine, either. I used to shop at the Fremont location, so I'm glad to find there's one here in my new city. We bought two chairs today, the staff was super helpful and nice, helped us get a 15% discount and loaded the chairs into our car. Very friendly and very large Cost Plus. I was asked if I needed help no fewer than two times. Store was well stocked. The layout is pretty simple so it's easy to find what you want. Good place for unique food items & gift tchotchkes at a basically reasonable price. read more

This location just went from a 4-star to a 5-star in recent weeks. Their prices have really come down and the outdoor furniture they have is - quite possibly - the best deal in town. Quality, attractive, modern furniture for prices that beat Target. And their food selection has always been great. Most recently, I've discovered the crack-cocaine of my life that is the Popcorn, Indiana brand popcorn (try the cheddar cheese...holy crap). And they are 2 bags for $3 here. I'll be back soon to get some patio furniture. And...well...what's a trip to World Market without a couple bottles of wine? read more
