Today is the 4th of July, also known as Independence Day... Let's recognize an accomplishment of one of our US Citizens, Willis Herron. He had a dream and made it a reality for $700,000 in 1991. On July 10, 1913, there was a record high of 134 degrees in the nearby Death Valley. That's why the thermometer is 134 feet tall. The thermometer has been sold several times and at one point, it wasn't working because the electricity was $8000 per month! One year, strong winds broke it in half and another year, the light bulbs popped out! Thanks to Sathy and Joce, I was able to visit this Landmark in June 2017. We were driving from Vegas to LA. On that day, the temperature was 118 degrees... oh, wow! It was HOT! However, I did manage to get out of the car and snap a couple of photos... This is a cool tourist attraction if you are driving between Las Vegas and Los Angeles. Just look for the signs for the town of Baker, California. Yelp 100 Challenge 2017 - # 43/100 I'm just so glad to see it back in its glory, towering at 134 feet, The World's Tallest Thermometer has been turned on again in July 2014 after it was shut off for 2 years due to high electric bills. Now I know why everything here is more expensive than anywhere else. It's to pay for the thermometer's upkeep. This area gets insanely hot, as just a 120 miles north in Furnace Creek of Death Valley reported one of the hottest days on Earth at 134 degrees. Baker is just as hot so be careful~! Evidently built to commemorate a record setting day in 1913 when the temperature reached 134 degrees, the thermometer was clearly built by people who weren't around in 1913. Because anyone that was actually around that day damn sure wouldn't have wasted their time building a giant thermometer. They would have put something up that provided some damn shade. It's a roadside attraction that is right off the highway on the way to Vegas. It is super easy to get to and the street parallels the highway and going back on that street will take you directly back to the highway. It's nearly impossible to get lost. It's one of those must see roadside attractions, but after seeing it once, there really is not much else. They are in the process of restoring it to it's original glory, so support then! There thermometer goes up to 134degrees and is also 134 feet tall to commemorate the highest temperature recorded, which was 134 degrees. From LA, you will pass by there on the way to Death Valley and Vegas, so why not stop by on your way for a photo op and show some local support!! A big plus, this place is completely dog friendly!! I love traveling with my dog. He's my best companion and bodyguard and in the middle of the desert, this is a welcomed place! The gift shop had AC blasting, clean bathrooms and tables to eat at. There are also outside tables. I learned that this place was dog friendly by accident. On our current road trip, my dog and I passed by here for some photos. There was no sign saying no pets and it was hot, so there was no way I was going to leave him in the car. I also needed to use that bathroom. Seeing that it is a giftshop and no food was served, I brought him in with me. The lady welcomed us and asked me how I knew the place was dog friendly. I said I didn't. She said we love dogs and welcome them. Feel free to stop here to use the bathroom and eat at our tables with the AC with your dog. That deserves 5 stars in my opinion! Would I come here again? You bet!! Now I know a great place to stop with clean bathroom to take a break, eat and escape from the heat when I travel with my dog! Honestly, there's not much to see except for the thermometer and gift shop. The thermometer is pretty tall but it's not as tall as you would imagine. After taking pictures of it, the next thing to do would be to visit the gift shop but it's a very small shop with a tiny selection of goods to purchase. Overall, I think it's not really worth the trip. Everyone in Baker was really friendly and I never had any problems with parking although the parking lot is pretty tiny. read more

I came here a couple of years ago when the thermometer was down for maintenance. It didn't seem like much, but when my mom and I drove through I figured it was something she'd like. It is now back up, complete with a family owned and operate shop at the base (separate review). Pull up and park next to the adjacent building. Take your photos and read the informative plaque. Head inside to grab a bottle of water or some souvenirs and to hear more about the thermometer itself- it was created by one guy with a dream, then went into foreclosure and was brought back by his family. TIP: taking photos at the base doesn't allow the digital temperature to show up, the best spot to get the shot is to go to the business park next door and walk around by their dumpster. So we stopped and I managed to get a snapshot of the World's Tallest Thermometer! :) It was working when we passed by, but when i looked at it, it looked kinda small. My boyfriend was the one that told me that Baker had the highest recorded temperature of 134 degrees, so we just had to stop by to see the giant thermometer. We literally had to cross the street in order to get a really good picture of it and with it and it was just cool being able to see it in person. We wanted to check out the store that was dedicated to it, but the person in charge was on their break so we literally did a little window shopping to do our best to peek inside. It looked pretty neat with the knick knacks and informational stuff we could spot through the window. The place used to be a Bum Boy restaurant before, so they have a plaque dedicated to the restaurant and an old sign from the restaurant located on the side of the store. They also had a frying pan with eggs on it, not real though, that stated it has to be 158 degrees in order to be hot enough to fry an egg. read more

I've seen it numerous times from the freeway but it doesn't warrant a stop there nor a visit because the damn thing doesn't even work anymore! I always note the thermometer as I drive by Baker. Maybe that's why it has been repaired--most of us are driving by Baker not through. Even the Starbucks closed here. I like the thermometer because of its history. On July 10, 1913, the highest world temperature recorded happened at Furnace Creek in Death Valley at 134 degrees. Since Baker calls itself the Gateway to Death Valley, what better way to sell Baker than the world's tallest thermometer with a height of 134 feet to commemorate that historic reading. Built by YESCO (the Young Electric Sign Company in Las Vegas), the original sign blew down in one of our major spring windstorms. The sign was rebuilt and a YESCO rep told me that there is concrete in much of the base to make sure it doesn't blow down again. The sign has not been working for several years. The last time I have photo evidence of it working was in 2009 when we stopped here on the way to a tour of Edwards Air Force Base and it was in the low 70s. It's a shame no one has the money nor the desire to fix the thermometer, but it is one of those iconic roadside things that catches your eye and makes you smile or grimace. I asked my husband to stop by here for me to take a quick picture since we were heading toward the Burger King. The thermometer was off when we arrived, but I suspect that it has been off for quite some time. But I do remember passing by this thermometer when I was a kid driving with my family to Las Vegas (there was once a time a long time ago when Vegas had more kid friendly things to do) and stopping by here to take a photo because it was just such a really cool and unique landmark. Horray!! There's a sign that says the thermometer is coming back! Its a cheesy somewhat "digital" thermometer that is next to the Baker "Welcome Center", which is also closed. Last time we were there, we thought so sad this place is a mess, but it is much better now. It may very well be the world's tallest thermometer and it was cute and a nice stop. There is an area to walk your dog and last time I was there, they even had doggie bags. Now that is a nice tough. There are clean bathrooms and a small store to stop in. Sadly, Bun Boy is out of business as is most of Baker, California. And it is sad, it was a wonderful small town, but with mine closures and people leaving it is a shell of what it once was. People still live there and they could really use some business. There are a few things left in Baker to see. One is the World's Tallest Thermometer as well as the Alien Jerky store down the street. Fun little stop on a road trip. It's close to the alien jerky place. They have a gift shop and there are plenty of gas station to pump gas and get snacks. They also have a cafe, breakfast place. I don't normally stop here on my way into California but I do enjoy seeing it as I drive by. Really once you stop at this place once it's enough but it's a cool little landmark. If you're looking for an excuse to get off the 15 this is one of those places you might want to stop at once. It is what it is, a giant thermometer, telling you that depending on the time of year that yes, you are in the desert, and yes, it's freaking hot outside. This is something to drive by and look at as you're deciding where to get gas for that push over the pass to get to Vegas, or before exploring DVNP or the Mojave Preserve. After all these years of being broken down and sitting on the side of the road like an eyesore, this world famous roadside attraction finally got a facelift. It was a running joke for a while because the temperature was always off. For something that a city was put on the map for, they didn't take much effort over the years to restore it. If you're driving up or down the 15 freeway you'll get a glimpse of it while going 80mph towards your destination... and that's pretty much all there is to see. You could stop and take a photo, or buy a soda at an adjacent gas station, but there really isn't much other than that... just the temp. There's also a gift shop at the base, but I'm not even sure what they'd sell there. For being the world's tallest anything, it doesn't seem all that big and I'm surprised nobody has ever created something bigger to strip them of that title. In the case that you do stop, you might as well check out the Alien Jerky store as well. Make a half an hour of it - then you have an excuse to stretch your legs! Really, this huge thermometer is in the middle of nowhere and is no big deal. I have driven by this landmark numerous times on the 15 freeway going and coming back to LA from Las Vegas. It is located in Baker, California. A desert city filled with sand and tumble weeds. The city experiences pretty much extreme weather conditions as it gets very in the winter or extremely hot during the summer. Yes, there are a few eateries and gas stations around the small city. And that's about it. Now back to the world famous thermometer. It is basically something high and has lights that you see from the highway when there is nothing else to look at but flat land. And half the time when I pass by, the temperature gauge is not working, nor is it accurate... if compared to my Google app. Anyhow, it might be exciting for the children to see since it's so gigantic. So it's not really a waste afterall because it helps the local businesses sustain its economy from the visitors driving by. But I think visiting once is enough unless you need to by gas or food... The digital reading boasted 60 degrees or something of the like. But the harsh cold and wind outside- definitely cried out something colder. I found it interesting that it was only build as recent as 1991, as a tribute to the record 134 degrees set in July 1913. It stands 134 feet tall and displays a maximum temp of 134 degrees in honor of the 134 temperature record. On 7/20/08, we stopped in Baker for a early morning breakfast at Bob's Big Boy on our way to Fabulous Las Vegas to celebrate our daughters 21st birthday.
