The interior of the restaurant is charming. The waiter was friendly, helpful and initially responsive. Towards the end of our meal he disappeared. We had to chase down another staff member who helped us pay our bill. Several of us had steak. The steak was tough and over done. Another had the seafood chowder that was very bland. It was a surprise that nobody told me about this pub until I discovered it by chance, after I got lost cycling in the Phoenix Park. I am not from Dublin, don't know if this pub is popular at all, but I really like it. It is very close to the park and to the Liffey, in the called strawberry fields. Inside it is more like a restaurant where you can find people dressed formal. Outside they have some tables like in a German Biergarten, where you can sit relaxed (if the weather is nice of course). The food is in between traditional Irish pub food and modern restaurant, I have to say that I prefer only one of the other. The Anglers Rest is a great traditional Irish pub without being cheesy and over the top. It is now run pretty much just as a restaurant with a small bar for pre or post dinner drinks. There is good bit of outdoor seating for a sunny day but really it all focuses around the food. That said I have yet to eat here as I came recently on a very sunny evening and we sat outside and have a few drinks. They have an outside fire which is great if it gets a bit cold. Inside is really cosy with a big open fire and very traditional decorations. There are loads of staff so the service is really fast. The food looked and smelled amazing so that will bring me back soon for sure. They also have live music every night - this might put some people off but its done in a nice way and not too loud. The musicians sit at one of the high bar tables and play away in the background. The location as you might guess by the name is down on the river Liffey and it really is a very beautiful place to be - would be nice to walk or bike here through the Phoenix Park and stop for a bite to eat. read more

A great find- though it's well known, it is in such a random part of city that you feel like you have discovered something. It's a rustic old Irish pub/restaurant which serves great traditional food with music every night. The musicians tend to sit near the bar, so you can't really hear them from the restaurant area. But it's still a great atmosphere. The fish pie is the popular dish, otherwise get seafood chowder and steak main course. Avoid the burger though- it's plain and not as good as you would expect in this place. Loved it and will be back again soon. read more

So beautiful inside and out. We came to the strawberry beds randomly and decided to finally try the anglers rest, considering I live down the road and I've only ever heard good things about it. We weren't disappointed. The staff were so welcoming too. Everything arrived piping hot. I don't eat chicken wings but I tasted the sauce from my daughters and it was so spicy I loved it. My main course was tasty but the next time il be back for the desserts they have. read more

I have been coming here since I was child and the Anglers never fails to impress me. Set in the gorgeous Strawberry beds you would nearly think you were in the countryside if it weren't for the enormous view of the M50 bridge on the way there. The decor is cosy, filled with candles and lots of fireplaces. Trad music goes on the bar next door and seafood is the main star of the menu. Kind of like Dublin West's version of Johnnie Foxes. Upstairs is a brides Pinterest dream. Even though this pub is out of the way and not on a public transport route the place is always busy. On sunny days their beer garden gets packed. Be prepared to hang around for a table. It's worth the wait. read more

On average, I do have more better experiences here than not but went here on a Tuesday night and had one of the worst service experiences I've ever had. Called in advance and made a reservation, not knowing how busy they were going to be. We were in and sat right on time. The server was moderately attentive for the first part of the evening. We decided what we wanted to and put in our order, only to find out the 2 things we ordered were sold out, which is understandable as we came in at 8:30pm. We selected different items from the menu and I ordered a glass of wine. Our server didn't come back until our starters were more than half way finished where I asked for my glass of wine which I hadn't received up to that point. Time had passed and another server dropped our meals off, to which I asked for the glass of wine again, which still hadn't been brought to me. The food was a bit cold when it came out but both my guest and I had been thinking it was quite a while for the food and were starving so we didn't want to send it back. No one came over to check how our meal was, replenish our waters and still no site of my wine. After we were finished with our meal, which was around 9:30/9:35is we asked for a dessert menu. At 9:55 we still had the dessert menu in our hands and were waiting for the waiter to come back. I was shocked that the waiter knew we had dessert menus and didn't come back to check over the course of 20/25 minutes if we wanted to order or wanted the check. At 10pm, with no service I finally tracked a waiter down (which wasn't our own) and asked for the check. We were brought the check over to the table which I had to send back since it had the glass of wine on it that I ordered and never received! We ended up getting out in time to head up to the local shop and pick up some chocolate for dessert. I do love it here and I hope this was a once off ;( read more

I was here for a wedding in May, and I have to say the food was one of the best wedding meals I have ever had. The service was good too. Pre-dinner drinks by the open fires downstairs was also a treat. My normal request for any pub/restaurant is that they start stocking some craft beers, and that goes for here too. I was in the market for tasty pub food a few weeks back; the anglers rest seemed to fit the bill; and so I arrived, at 8pm on a Saturday with no reservation. No problem we where reassured by the wonderfully welcoming host, "we'll get you a table" what a great welcome, and a perfect start! We waited about 15 mins by the bar, being well entertained by the live music and the hustle and bustle of the busy restaurant, until a table was ready for us. The menu is very good, the right balance to keep both someone looking for something interesting and someone looking for something more simple happy. I had a burger it was very tasty, succulent and full of flavour, the bun was rather over warmed, and a bit standard, this could be improved with a brioche, or other better quality bun. The side salad I had asked for instead of chips was a but like a handful of garnish dumped on the plate, but that's ok. My dining companion had the fish and chips, and really enjoyed her food. The warmth of the staff, and value allow the small issues with the food to be forgotten and I will go back to see what they can do on a less manic night! read more

AVOID- FOOD POISONING. Got food poisoning from an undercooked fish dish at the Anglers Rest on Valentines which left me quite sick for 2 days. Contacted restaurant next day to inform them & 48 hours later I received an email from a member of the marketing team to tell me they had looked into my claim & they were delighted to say that no other customer, apart from myself, had reported food poisoning that night!! I have responded to that email & have had no reply for over 3 days now. Abymsal food quality and even worse customer service, so so disappointing from what was used to be a reputable establishment. I went here for a family celebration and I must say, the place is just fantastic. The food is top notch, the atmosphere is really cosy, with the oldstyle furniture, open fires and traditional music. The service was great, not too fast, so we got a chance to digest our food. We never felt like we were being rushed out of the place. I would highly recommend this as a place to go for any occasion. But be warned - you might want to book, as the word has gotten out about how good it is, so its usually busy! :) read more

We landed from Los Angeles and staying nearby. We hoped for a nice, relaxing dinner. YELP told us about this charming place along a creek. Oliver met us and had a nice table prepared. We heard a traditional guitar and mandolin from the bar. My wife started with wine and I needed a Guinness! It really does taste better here! My wife had the pork belly with a fruit sauce. Also concannon and salad. If was very good and very pleasing to they eye. I desired a simple fish fry with potatoes. Sorry, chips! Wonderful also and somehow, like the Guinness, tasted better here. We enjoyed the ambience of the big room. A family with three young mostly-behaving boys. A birthday party for a senior lady complete with rousing songs. We shared a perfect dessert of bread pudding, vanilla ice cream and cappuccino. Oliver met us again on our way out. He directed us over to a doorway where we could peek in to a private party. There was a young woman and man wearing out the wooden floor with Irish dance. My wife said I could not have picked a more memorable place for our first dinner in Ireland. Good job Dennis! What to do on a nice Sunday afternoon after a walk in Phoenix Park? Why not some dinner in the Anglers Rest? That's what we did on Sunday. After a nice walk in the park we stopped by the Anglers Rest for some food. The pub is amazing, cosy with open fire, typical pub interior, dark wood, green tiles on the bar & friendly staff; you instantly get the 'ah I am in an Irish pub and I love it' feeling. We ordered 4 Guinness and damn, they were creamy, smooth and you just could not put them down. For starters we ordered the liver pate & chicken wings. The wings were spicy & tender, the pate melted in your mouth & the salad on the side was lovely dressed with a yummy mustard dressing. The chutney was slightly strange - we still have not made out what it was, but I opt for strawberries.... (don't ask me why, just had that girly intuition....). If anyone figures it out, let me know... Main courses were honey glazed bacon with mash & cabbage and lamb with spring onion mash, carrots & parsnip. The bacon was fantastic, tender, juicy and just right - cooked to perfection. The mash that came with it was flavoured with mustard - yes I know what you think, what a strange combination and that must taste weird - but to my surprise it worked perfectly well with the bacon - so good that I kept robbing spoonfuls of my better half's plate. The poor thing still does not know why his mash disappeared so quickly... The lamb unfortunately was not as expected. It came in a weird round shape and kinda looked like as popped out of dog food can. Despite the weird shape it was decent enough tasting, but in comparison to other Irish lamb dishes not as good as to be expected :( However the creamy mash on the site, the tasty red wine sauce and the parsnip cooked to perfection kinda made up for it. The only disappointment of the night was that, arriving at 5 we had to wait nearly half an hour for a table and 40 mins between starters & mains. The staff however, was super friendly, kept checking in on us and apologized for the delay caused by a 100 head party upstairs. The neighbour's dinners arrived in time (they did not have starters) which lead to believe that we were just incredibly unlucky with the timing of our main courses and nothing the staff could have done. To make up for it the waiter gave us the drinks on the house =-). To summarize the experience, I'd go back in a heartbeat for a delicious pint of Guinness & some of that lovely bacon and for the great friendly service we had, however, I would pick a better time than 5 on a busy Sunday afternoon (we left at 7 and the initial Sunday dinner storm had died down dramatically). read more

I've eaten at Anglers a dozen times and was pleased. Today was not their day. Hassle: We asked for two separate checks for two couples as my husband and I were not drinking and eating light. This was too much of a challenge for our waitress so we divided it up at the end. Food: the wings which used to be excellent were flavourless and wiggly. We asked for them to be crispy yet the skin was hardly cooked and left a rancid fatty aftertaste. My husband and I both had fish and chips. Fish was good. Chip portion was soggy and small. We asked for another order which never came yet they added to the bill. Tarter sauce was Hellmans with a few capers chucked in. Best part of meal was the meringue desert. Service: we had about 5 different servers who were inattentive and impersonal. Price: without alcohol our bill was €50 for a kid portion fish and chip, adult fish and chip, tea and dessert. Not great value Atmosphere: lovely, lovely, cozy, roaring fire and nice live music. Shame the food and service let them down. Very saddened as this used to be a fine establishment. Great craic at this hidden gem in Chapelizod! There's music 7 nights a week, and it's wonderful. A great addition to the already warm and cozy atmosphere of the place. We showed up on a Friday evening during prime dinner time. We were told there would be about a 20-30 minute wait, but to help ourselves to the bar where there were cocktail tables and stools for a pre dinner drink. Which we did. We got our drinks fast, the staff were helpful and polite and took care of us! The maitre d just recognised everyone as he walked around the bar and told them when their tables were ready! No names, no phone numbers! That was pretty sweet. And in less than 20, he came right for us to tell us they were ready to seat us. Awesome! Our table was right next to the crackling fireplace, and it was just perfect. We had great service and great food, and it was such a random place we just happened to hear about that night. I am so glad we went! Food: Fish and chips: BIG piece of fish, with plenty of chips. The batter was crispy and thick, which I love. The fish was flaky and fresh! Veggie soup for a starter: HUGE portion with brown bread! Salmon special for my main: huge salmon steak with the crispest skin. Overlooked, but so tasty. It was served with mashed potato and peas with lardons. On the side was a bernaise style sauce - omg, I put it on everything! This was such a wonderful and filling meal! Great for date nights or for bringing out of town guests. Real Irish cooking, but there is also a great patio for some drinks! The menu is a bit pricey, but we'll be back! read more

My family and I, decided to eat here last Sunday, the 9th of July, because we seen the reviews of the place were very good. We arrive at 14.50, to be greeted by the manager, who told us because we did not Pre Book we would be waiting a few minutes, which is understandable as it was a busy Sunday, so we say and wait. 30 minutes later the same guy who asked us to sit aside and wait for a table, came up to us and said are you's waited to be seated, on which I said "yes you asked us to wait her 30 minutes ago" He replied "oh I'll try get you a table in a few minutes". 15 minutes later, he comes and tells us that they are opening the upstairs because it's busier than usual. So we sit upstairs, get greeted by one of their staff, who very quickly takes our order, brings our drinks and goes off. 25 minutes goes by then finally our starters arrives (just a large portion of chicken wings to share), which were quite nice, but very small portion for a 14.95 (about 10 wings). We finish them, the table is cleared, we then sit there after the table was cleared for another 30 minutes waiting for our main, which then gets served. The main was very enjoyable (we each got fresh veg and beef) but very small portion for nearly 20 euro each. During our main I had to get up and take a jug of water from a table in the room because when we asked for more drinks they forgot to bring them out. So after over two hours in the place, we finally finish and just want to leave, so we ask the waiter who took the plates if we could quickly have the bill so we could leave, and guess what? He forgot! 10 minutes goes by, we have to ask somebody else who goes and takes the payment and we finally leave. After, 2.5 hours, 75 euro later for 3 people, we left rather disappointed and still hungry because of the time and portion sizes. I'm going to put it down to a once off and a very busy Sunday, but it was fairly shocking to be very honest. Won't be returning anytime soon. read more

Chapelizod is home to one of Dublin's real treasures - the Angler's Rest pub and restaurant. This is a lively place where delicious seafood chowder is always on offer alongside very tasty scampi. I've eaten a hamburger here and been more than happy with that too. The place attracts a broad range of ages with teenagers loving the atmosphere as well as retirees. The food portions are huge and well-priced and you are always encouraged to have a drink by the bar before you sit at your table. The staff are lovely locals and will often take the time to have a chat with you, making this a great place to visit. read more

I have been to this place twice. Their Chef cooked my Medium rare to perfection, one of the best steak experiences I had in Ireland and that both times. The second time I brought my biz partners from Germany who also praised the delicious food(pate for starters&steaks for mains) and the friendly staff(a waitress called Sophie). It wouldn't be fair if I wouldn't to mention their desserts. They were the so-called cherry on top - pure delight. We are touring Ireland and have eaten at many restaurants and pubs for many meals. This is by far, the best seafood meal that we've eaten! It was crowded and so you should call ahead for a reservation. You could tell it was a favorite of many of the locals. The owner was exceptionally hospitable to us, as Americans. The seafood was the freshest and seasoned perfectly! The black cod was exquisite! Another in our party had pork, which was moist and delicious, not dry. Another had the chicken, which also was moist. Oh glory be to THE Pork Belly at Angler's Rest. Recently had a trip across Ireland, and by far the best meal and experience (on the whole) was here. Yum. Brilliant place with kids.. high chairs and kid's menus. Now some of the staff there are the cheeriest, most brilliant wait staff.. LUCKY, because a couple of dragons too. Cold, and "roll your eye a bit more lass types'.. and 'did you really have to roll up here tonight when i had to work' (with a big sigh). But eat that pork belly and tell me it isn't brilliant. What a disappointment. Friday night we trekked over to the Anglers Rest assured in the knowledge we were going to have a good meal. Not the case unfortunately. I know this place specialises in fish but if you offer alternatives to seafood they should be of a par with the speciality I would think. Anyway, I ordered Duck Liver Parfait (pate) and himself ordered vegetable soup. The parfait arrived and can only be described as non descript, dry and overpowered by the salad dressing on the accompanying salad and the sauce served with it. The soup was bog standard and nothing to write home about while the brown bread was short of being burnt. On to the mains. I'd ordered steak medium rare with chips and saute onions while himself had a burger with chips. What a disappointment, the steak was flavourless, the sauce overpowering (tarragon butter) and the chips (FROZEN!!) were overcooked. The burger was as himself put it, was not as good as a chipper burger and he wouldn't even bring the leftovers home for the dog. Again his chips were overdone. I'd ordered a half bottle of pinot grigio which when it arrived was warm! The service was ok but the couple next to us ordered mussels as a starter and had to ask for a finger bowl and a dish to put their empty shells in. Correct me if I'm wrong but in a restaurant specialising in seafood I would expect a finger bowl and dish for discarded shells to be standard. I couldn't help noticing that the battered fish was looking well done and again the chips were on the overdone side. Now if a restaurant is going to serve up frozen chips the least they could do was to cook them properly. I for one will not be returning there. The meal including wine and pint of cider came to 65.00. WAAAAAAY overpriced for what we got. Not worth the trip. read more

Went to have lunch here last Saturday with the family. The moment we got inside the door I felt an uneasy feeling, the greeter/seater rudely instructed us where to sit. I suggested that perhaps we could sit near the fish tank, as the kids would like watching while we eat? An abrupt No! was my answer. I decided he didn't mean to come across this abrupt, and that it was just 'his way'. We ordered our food, the waitress was ok, she 'forgot' to say hello etc. but she could take our order, so that was acceptable I guess?! (She did have to go to the kitchen twice to retrieve answers 1. what was the soup of the day 2. what type of marinade was on the chicken.) It was only 12.15, so I thought that was ok too. Food arrived, and everything was grand, except my soup - it was awful. It was supposed to be leek & potato, but it was a mish mash of god knows what, and it had a very 'strange' taste, 'strange' not in a good way, there was something wrong with it, something old or gone off/sour, I couldn't really tell. My husband tasted it, and advised me not to have it. I called a waitress, and told her the soup wasn't ok. If there was another soup, I would have it, if not, that's ok. This is where the TROUBLE began - the rude greeter/seater, perhaps he was the manager? - arrived to the table to 'deal' with the soup problem. He was obnoxious. He was abrupt. He was downright rude. He questioned and questioned me as to what was wrong witht he soup??? I remained calm and just answered, I don't know what's wrong with it, but it just isn't ok. He shook his head, he said 'we've sold 50 soups today, and not one complaint!!!!' (they had just started serving lunch, the waitress didn't even know wwhat the soup was - if she'd served 50 already, she'd have known!) He went on and on and on. He told us the chef was shouting at HIM, because 1 PERSON DOESN'T LIKE the soup!!! Then he asked 'would madame like to order a chowder?' I said no thanks I'm fine with what I have. His awful behaviour ruined, not just our lunch, but our day. The kids were bewildered, as we were ourselves. We respect Wrights, and know that the owners cannot monitor the behaviour of the staff. We understand it is difficult for foreign staff, perhaps the language etc.. but having lived and worked abroad myself for sometime, I think they really need to make more of an effort - the Anglers Rest is a beautiful Irish pub - the staff need to match it. read more

The Anglers Rest is one of those lovely countryside pubs with amazing food and just a stones-throw from the city. I have been a couple of times, last time was on a date after spending one of the only really nice days so far this year in the Phoenix Park. Despite being late afternoon getting there, it was quite busy. Being able to site outside in the sun and enjoy good food is great (at night time they do have heaters outside too). We had starters and mains. For starters we shared the Duck Liver parfait which was not only beautifully presented but tasted devine! Main course, given the abundant sunshine, I selected the seafood salad. After the starter I should have ordered a starter portion as it was a great portion of very well cooked fish. Squid is one of those hard-to-get-right fish and it was cooked to perfection. Very tasty and filling salad (only thing that let it down a little was the dressing with looked like a cheap marie-rose out of a bottle). My dining partner had the fish and chips - beautiful chunky chips and really great fish, served with a nice tartare sauce. Overall, a great place. Wine glasses definately need polishing (they were very dirty at the base and had watermarks) but aside from that and the sauce served with the salad - the whole experience was amazing as always! Service is great, the manager (or owner, not too sure?) is very plesant to deal with and I will definitely be back with some more new diners. If you have not tried it, they I suggest you do, I hear there are some great nights out there too - its a big venue and lots of fun! Disappointing ! The bar has been completely revamped and is really nice Outside they have created a lovely terrace with a bar and food service area .At first glance it looks amazing but all of the seating was reserved for Barbeques.The majority of what used to be a lovely beer garden overlooking the river is now just an unused field with no seating .We had to sit on the grass and it wasn't even grass .It had dirty clumps of dirt everywhere .If you have a pre-booked table for food then it's fine but as a beer garden to enjoy the sun then it's awful. We stayed for two drinks but that was only because we had walked there from Ballincollig . Otherwise we would have left as soon as we were moved off our chairs which had no reserved notice .Right in front of the field.We would have stayed for more drinks and perhaps food but with nowhere to sit ,not even a bench there was no way . There is so much wasted space .At one point there was at least thirty people sitting around on dirty grass . Really the owners need to plan for hot days .In the past it had picnic tables and you could relax for hours but now it seems they don't care about the passing trade and summer visitors just about looking nice and about being a party venue. read more
