I told the cashier (male with grey curly hair) that I wanted my bagel open-faced. He paused, looked at me, then said "Why would you want that?". Why would I want that? Because I'm not a moray eel who can unhinge his jaw to fit tall things like a stacked bagel sandwich into my mouth. What kind of question is that? The vast majority of the 100+ bagel places I've been to in my life serve them open-faced by default. Why this guy was so perplexed by my request is baffling. If some customer requests soy milk instead of dairy milk in their latte, does he also ask "Why would you want that?". If some customer requests their English Muffin toasted, does he also ask "Why would you want that?". How about you stick to fulfilling the customer's order without challenging them to justify it? Anyways, the wife felt her Breakfast Burrito was just average, and my Cold Smoked Salmon Bagel was disappointing, though it was ultimately served open-faced. The lox didn't taste smoked at all, and there were hardly any capers. The arugula was messy without contributing much flavor. It would've been nice if they added tomatoes (like most bagel places). I asked the girl working the cashier station about it, and she said go speak with the chef. So I went to the person I saw working the griddle and asked him why they're calling their salmon "lox", when it clearly isn't lox. He said it is lox. I said, "No, it isn't. Lox is a fillet of brined salmon and doesn't look anything like what you serve on a bagel." The look on his face betrayed his sudden awareness that I was right. He then appeared to start getting uncomfortable, and began looking for someone else to join the conversation. I told him not to bother. Their food isn't bad, but accurate labeling is important so as not to mislead the customer.

The nearby Bamfield Pub was either closed or out of business. The outdoor deck with tables is a nice shaded place to eat, so we decided to give it a go. Turns out both the menu and the ordering of food items happens not at your table, but at the cashier of the Market which is at the same store-front but a different and seemingly unassociated entrance - confusing at first, but manageable. We ordered a BLTC (what's that? a Bacon Lettuce & Tomato sandwich with a slice of American cheese) and a grilled ham & cheese. Both sandwiches were prepared promptly and served with fries - the sandwiches were edible but nothing special - I removed the slice of American cheese from mine - while common in these parts, it's not a plus. The fries were pretty standard, and offered with gravy or ketchup -- we took the ketchup packets and had to squeeze a lot of them out to get that working. So, do I recommend this restaurant? If you're hungry, they serve food, and they are your only restaurant option at lunchtime (at least when we were in town). So yes, I'd go again. Would I recommend the food? Not really -- nothing wrong with it, but C$ 35.70 for two sandwiches and fries was a bit pricey for such marginal quality. On the other hand, they are remote, so one can be glad that they offer anything at all. The other half of the operation (the Market part) is tiny with very limited selection, but they do offer many of the things Pacific Coast Trail hikers need. So while your options are limited, what they have should get you through (including some good ice-cream bars).

However, this little cafe, located right beside The Market, Bamfield's general store, is the perfect little reprieve for those that hunger for a good meal before an epic adventure or just returning from one. You won't be blown away by mind altering flourishes of culinary wizardry, but you will be presented with wonderfully large portions and deliciously prepared meals. Seating is plentiful and the serving staff (consisting of just one waitress) is very friendly and welcoming. You may need to flag her down if the place gets a little hectic, but she is quick to come over and help you with what you need. We came here for both breakfast and lunch and in both instances the food here left me satisfied and well fed. For lunch, their seafood chowder was quiet good, with good portions of fish and shrimp. My favourite though was their Bammer-time breakfast: hash browns, choice of sausage/bacon/ham, eggs any way you want them, avocados, and hollandaise sauce - all in one bowl. Whoa. It was definitely Bammer-time. And yes, the bowl was totally bigger than my head. Bonus: The cafe and the general store share the same wifi, which is free!

In general the food was great and the staff was friendly (one barista that I dealt with was not very enthusiastic but they seemed like they were just really tired). The setting is beautiful! There's ample patio seating, and whether you sit inside or outside you get a beautiful view of the water. Curried cauliflower handpie: A fantastic savoury handpie with a flaky crust and a flavourful vegetarian filling. Some handpies are kind of flat with not a lot of filling but that was not the case here. It came with a mango chutney for dipping. Chocolate quinoa cake (GF): When I was choosing a dessert when I went here for lunch, I felt like I should get pie, but this cake looked so good and I did not regret trying it. Really fudgy and rich. Fantastic cake that definitely did not suffer from being made gluten free. If anything, the texture was better than a regular cake. Lemon buttermilk pie: This was the only thing I tried that I didn't like. I wanted to try this one because it seemed unique, as I don't think I've tried a custardy lemon pie before, but it was too sweet for me. The texture was lovely and the little pops of brightness from the berries were nice, but it was kind of hard to get through. Vegan breakfast cookie: Good but basic breakfast cookie with oats, seeds, and cranberries, held together by what tasted like peanut or maybe almond butter. I liked the texture - I'm not sure exactly what it was about it, but it tasted fresher than a lot of breakfast cookies I've tried. Chai latte: Good - I saw them making it, and they use a packaged but good chai concentrate, from Say When. It makes a strong, spicy chai latte that's not too sweet.
